As we wrestled, the strong scent of alcohol permeated the air. My adrenaline spiked. This meant he'd be harder to reason with and stronger than usual.

"Stop it!" I shouted. It was like he couldn't hear me. His eyes were glassy and vacant. I recognized the familiar look that Mike used to get when he was coming after me.

Determined not to be a victim again, I fought with all my might. But with each push, he grappled more tightly. While we struggled, he hung on so forcefully, he ripped my clothes. Then he overpowered me and pushed me back inside the house.

"Leo, what is your problem?" I cried as he jostled my body around. "Get your hands off me!" Leo wouldn’t stop and soon he had me on the floor. I held his chest, trying to fend him off.

"I'm not taking no for an answer, Ophelia." His voice was unsteady and sloppy. Had he left in the morning and drank all day? That was a terrifying thought.

Unfortunately, Taylor heard the commotion. The next thing I knew she was boun

When Taylor finally came out of the exam room, I was relieved but also worried sick. I hoped the news was good. Even though it wasn't my fault that Leo did this to her, I still felt responsible. I held back my tears as she approached us. Arthur stood to see if she needed help. "So, what were the results?" I asked. "Anything major?" I swallowed hard in concern. "Nope! Doctor Sanchez took the x-ray and read the results right away. Nothing is broken. I guess I lucked out. It seems like a wasted visit for me medically, but at least I got to see some of the cool pictures his daughter has of her scorpion collection. Check this out!" She showed me a printed picture of a glowing scorpion climbing on a palm tree."He gave that to you? That's great!" I said with enthusiasm, internally sighing in relief at her jovial demeanor. "Maybe you and his daughter could contact one another sometime.""Yeah, I have the website address on the back of this picture. Her email is there too.

Arthur called his driver to show up and another servant to bring the car he'd driven back home. Once the three of us were in the limo, Arthur knocked on the dividing window. The driver rolled the tinted glass down."Sheffield, take us to my favorite restaurant," Arthur instructed."Of course, sir," the man said with a tip of his hat. He slowly rolled toward the hospital entrance with the blinker on to go left. "Hang on," Taylor began. Sheffield paused instead of pulling out. "I don't want to go out to eat. You two go on ahead of me." "Are you feeling all right?" I asked."Me? Pssssh. Of course! But I want to go to the mall. Please take me there, Sheffield.""Of course, Miss Taylor." As Sheffield pulled out on the highway, I leaned over to Taylor and asked, "How come you don't want to join us?""You get to see my beautiful face all the time," she joked, holding her hands up perching, pretending to be a model. "You don't need to drag me along." She and I sha

"Table for three, please," Arthur said to the host. I could tell he was still wound up, but his face didn't betray him. His expression barely moved from his usual flat affect, even during the taunting match. "Of course, Mr. Morgan. Would you like your usual one by the window?""That would be perfect." His voice was back to the narration tone which made me relieved. Table for three meant Taylor would be joining us instead of being picked up at the mall. I felt assured imagining the three of us together enjoying a meal. We'd been through a whirlwind of activity in the past twenty-four hours. We needed a chance to relax. The host wiped our seats. Then he pulled the chair out for me. I slipped onto the seat. Then Arthur sat and picked up the rolled napkin.I watched what he did with the cloth napkin and the silverware. Take out the utensils. Place them to the left and right. Put the cloth napkin on the lap. I was in the middle of copying him when the waitress

"What are you talking about when you say arch nemesis?" I asked, thoroughly engaged as Jessica joined Anthony and me on the couch. "Kingston, Arthur's stepbrother. It goes way back to his days as a pup. It has to do with their joined families.""What happened?" I asked, sitting with my chin in my palm. My eyes were glued to her, and I was on the edge of my seat. This was the riveting story I'd been dreaming of. My heart was pounding against my chest. "Arthur's father was killed when he was young. His mother wound up with another wolf from AzureSky Pack. ""Okay," I said. "What does that have to do with Kingston?" "After Arthur's mother remarried and formed a new family, she abandoned Arthur. Arthur has been managing the ShadowClaw Pack on his own.”"I understand, but why rivalry?" I inquired. "Kingston believed it was Arthur's mother who forced his parents to divorce. Consequently, Kingston harbors resentment toward Arthur. Several years ago, he, along with

At first, I was tongue-tied. I hadn't expected her to put the microscope on me so abruptly. "Let's be honest here. Haven't you had your eye on Arthur?" she asked, motioning to him when I didn't answer. My chest tightened in astonishment as I scoffed. Carefully, I assessed the situation to make sure I kept my emotions to a minimum. She'd remember any weakness I showed. I figured she was asking to see if I'd squirm, but she was in for her own surprise. I wasn't going to be silent. As I was about to speak, Arthur butted in."Pipe down, Catherine," he insisted. "There's nothing going on between us." For a second, I felt derailed. Our relationship really wasn’t much—he wasn’t wrong about that. What am I even fantasizing about? I sighed."To answer your question," I interjected, "I don't have a mate, but I plan to find someone who is suitable for me in the future."Catherine stared at me. I noticed that Arthur's mouth turned down slightly in disappointment. That w

I inhaled in surprise. At first, I was shocked... but his impulsive action turned me on. Without a word, he kissed me again. I couldn't help but be swayed by his spontaneous show of affection. Standing on my tiptoes, I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him back.At first, things were slow. A few kisses with our lips, playfully fluttering over one another but then he wanted more. As my mouth opened our tongues touched gently. I gasped in astonishment. It was intense. I had never kissed quite like this before. Feeling the tip of his warm tongue on mine sent shivers throughout my body. Rolls of excitement filled my stomach and I couldn't help but smile against his lips. He held my face and ran his fingers through my hair. Then he picked me up and brought me to our special room.It was like his hands couldn't stand to leave my body. He reached to the back of my dress and unzipped it. I let it fall to the floor. His expression was almost one of pain as he gazed at me. He

When I arrived at Arthur's favorite restaurant, I entered from the cold rain. It was a relief to be inside where it was warm and dry. I shook then folded my umbrella and asked the host where Arthur was."He's over there, Miss Ophelia.""Thanks."He was at the same table we had sat at after the hospital and Leo fiasco. A few tables down, I noticed someone else nearby. My heart sank. It was Catherine. "Arthur, don't sit there alone. Please come and join me." She waved to him as I stood next to him. Was she doing this just because I showed up when I did? "Do you think I have nothing better to do than sit down and eat steak with you? I'm a busy Alpha."Catherine's face flushed and her cheeks became instantly rosy in embarrassment. She turned her head and went back to her drink. "Let's not wait any longer. Bring him up," Arthur said. I looked up at him for a clue about what was about to happen. "What's going on?" I asked but I could tell that whatever he had

Ophelia's POV Arthur sneered and regarded Leo as if he were something revolting that had stuck to the bottom of his shoe. I shared that sentiment entirely. "This isn't about romantic conquest," he replied in a carefully controlled tone, his hand curling into a fist underneath the table. "If Leo had brought her flowers and written her a love poem, we wouldn't be having this conversation." "So what's it about then?" Catherine asked, gesturing to her cousin theatrically, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "What is so terrible about Leo? Why break his leg if you don't care whether or not he's interested in your sweet Ophelia?" I cast a nervous glance around the room. The other diners were staring in fascination at the tableau before them. I suppressed the urge to wave at one man, whose stare was of such an intensity that he looked as if his eyes were ready to bulge right out of their sockets. "What is wrong with you?" Arthur growled, finally losing some of his famous compo

Ophelia's POV The next morning I woke up early and decided to start my day with a cappuccino from my favorite coffee house ‘Rosalyn's’ before rehearsal. As I opened my door I smiled, turning my face to the warmth of the sun. It was a beautiful morning, and I had plenty of time to walk down to my destination before I had to get to work. One of my favorite things about my new home was the variety of charming shops located within walking distance of my house. I passed my favorite bakery ‘Daily Bread’ and deeply inhaled the fragrant aroma of freshly baked bread wafting into the street. I thought about stopping in for one of their luscious croissants but decided against it. Even though my mouth watered at the idea of the flakey, buttery consistency of their pastries, it wasn't practical. I had some time, but not enough to make two trips. And the coffee was non-negotiable if I was going to get through my morning. I always enjoyed practicing my cello, but rehearsal could be in

  • The Lycan's Unwanted Mate   Chapter 63: Guilty Pleasures

Ophelia's POV I had always loved jazz music. It was a passion that I didn't share with most people. It seemed to me that jazz was a polarizing art form. People seemed to either love it or loathe it. And I always seemed to have far too much going on in my life to waste time arguing about its merits with those who fell into the latter category. Nonetheless, from the time I was a child, I would pull on my earphones and be swept away by the sounds of my favorite musicians. Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, and Ella Fitzgerald to name a few. They felt like friends to me. No matter what was happening in my life, I knew that I could always turn to their music in my time of need. Listening to the sweet sound of Coltrane's ‘Cousin Mary’ would always bring me some measure of peace. It was one of the few things I could count on during that dark period of my life. I don't know exactly how it came up in conversation with Allen, but yesterday I confessed to him about this guilty pleasure of

  • The Lycan's Unwanted Mate   Chapter 62: Great Expectations

Ophelia's POV The next day, my head pounding with a dreaded hangover, I decided that there was only one surefire way to get Arthur out of my head once and for all. I was going to get rid of absolutely everything related to him. If I needed him out of my life, and out of my head for good, then I needed to purge it all. Everything must go, I thought irrationally, as I grimaced from the burn of the black coffee I had ingested. All of it. It would be like an exorcism. Only the demon I was desperately attempting to vanquish was my love for Arthur. It might be a tall order, but I had to start somewhere, I thought grimly, using the dregs of the bitter brew to swallow two aspirin. I'd begin with the obvious: the villa key he'd given me, our family photo from that baby store, and newspaper clippings I'd hung up beside my bed for the past year. I was sure there was more, but that was where I would begin. The only problem with my plan was that sorting through these items brought b

  • The Lycan's Unwanted Mate   Chapter 61: Final Farewell?

Ophelia's POV In the days following Christmas dinner, Allen was busier than usual. He spent most of his days at the hospital with his patients, sometimes even sleeping at work rather than driving home exhausted after a fifteen-hour shift. "I'm sorry," Allen told me over the phone during one of his infrequent breaks. "The hospital is just insanely busy right now. It seems as if every shifter in the surrounding territories is either sick or injured right now. I have no idea why!" "Maybe it's the full moon," I joked, trying to make light of the situation.I missed Allen, and the more I was alone with my musings, the more my mind and heart turned to Arthur, and what he might be doing. Did he remember me? Or had he forgotten me as quickly as it seemed? "It's not your fault in any case," I continued, trying to hide the disappointment I felt at the thought of spending another day alone. "Your patients are incredibly lucky to have you." "I'll make it up to you, I promise

  • The Lycan's Unwanted Mate   Chapter 60: Ghost of Christmas Past

Ophelia's POV I awoke early to the aroma of fresh coffee wafting tantalizingly from downstairs. Smiling, I threw on my new black robe and followed the scent to our kitchen table. And to Allen, my friend. I reflected once again, upon seeing him seated at the table with my son, how lucky I was these days. "Good morning, sweetheart," Allen said warmly, offering me a warm smile. "I was just going to bring you some coffee. Are you hungry for some breakfast?" My stomach immediately growled loudly in anticipation, making us both chuckle. I sat down next to my pup, ruffling his hair. Aiden was a year old, and I thanked the Moon Goddess every single day for bringing him into my life. For bringing both men into my life. "I guess that answers that question," Allen replied with a grin, making his way over to the stove. "Belgian waffles and home fries coming right up!" Allen was tall and handsome, with curly dark hair and melting chocolate eyes. Everything about him was warm and

Arthur's POV I found myself strolling through a winter garden. The sun rose high overhead, spreading warmth throughout my body despite the gentle snow falling to the ground. Everything in my surroundings sparkled as if silver glitter had somehow been mixed with the wintry precipitation.I ambled slowly past an ice sculpture, which miraculously bore Catherine's likeness down to the smallest detail. Even the tiny laugh lines around the corners of her mouth stood out in relief. For some reason, I felt as if the statue was purposefully mocking me. Telling me to give up, that my love would always be lost to me. This angered me, and with a muttered curse I drew my broadsword from its sheath. Raising it above my head, it glinted under the rays of the sun as if on fire. Grinning, I brought down my sword and decapitated the effigy in one swift stroke. It had been satisfying to kill her, if only symbolically. But before I could reflect upon why that might be, I heard something that to

Arthur’s POVI dreamed that Ophelia had come back. The ache that had been my reality for long was now removed and I was filled with... joy. We hugged one another and everything was perfect. Then an icy blizzard hit with the rapidity of a squall. I was blinded by the whitewash, and I lost track of her. Rushing around frantically, I searched for her in the last direction that I'd seen her go.It felt like I walked for ages but finally, I knew she was near because suddenly the storm swirled away into the distance, then ceased. The snow was melting and as I trudged toward her, shivering and frostbitten, she stood in a beautiful, lush garden. Moss and chartreuse grass grew before my eyes. She turned to me, and I was bewildered when koby-pink cherry flower blossoms began to fall at my feet, covering the ground. I reached out for the cherry blossom and held it. The branch broke under my grasp, and everything turned frigid.Ophelia joined me and touched the same tree, bringing

Ophelia’s POVAs we were traveling the swaying and rocking from the boat began to make me feel seasick. Being pregnant was only exacerbating the symptoms. When Kingston stopped by my cabin, he noticed I wasn't well."Uh oh, you look green. Not feeling too good, huh?" he asked."Do I really look that awful?""You could never look awful," he playfully joked with a half-smile, sitting across from me. I did my best to crack a smile for him, but I felt too nauseated. "Maybe I can help. The crew must have Dramamine or something similar.""Will it hurt the pup?" I asked, holding the baby bump on my stomach. I felt nervous which only compounded my queasiness. After being forced into drinking games, I didn't want to take a chance to consume any other substance that may hurt the baby.Remembering that night of drinking, a pang of mistrust for Kingston returned. I glanced at him, feeling iciness in my chest. But now he was behaving so contrary. He was going to all this trouble f

Ophelia’s POVMaking it just in time, I heard the announcement for Suntra, 10 am. Like it was planned, Kingston paid my way siding beside me. Clinging onto my printed ticket like it was my lifeline, I skipped to the queue. After handing it to the attendee she smiled."Enjoy your stay," was what she said. I wondered why she didn't say anything about this being a holiday or vacation. Even though she couldn't see into my eyes, somehow, she pinpointed I was on a one-way trip. It was when I realized for myself the significance of my leaving. Perhaps I was reading too much into it, but I took it as a sign. This was the right decision and I'd be safe once and for all. Encouraged even more by this random interaction, I enthusiastically traipsed toward the boat. I barely noticed Kingston beside me. My heart was racing with exhilaration, anxiety, and faith in a new life. Me and my pup would live in a lovely place free of Arthur's oppression. Free of all the people who'd kept me un
