Violet

“Mom said it was a favor from an old friend,” I replied, sighing as I thought of her. The one who had always supported me, no matter what.

Both her, and Dad.

I had always been extra careful with my glasses because I did not have a choice. I had replaced the frames many times, but never the glasses. Lyperian stone was rare and not replaceable now that it no longer existed.

The glasses were as important as my life. Without them, I had no control over anything.

“How does the stone help you with your problem?” Kylan asked, scooting his body a bit closer.

A warm smile crept onto my lips at his genuine interest. He had become even more curious now that he knew the materials came from Lyperia.

“It helps block out certain energies. Without it, I get overwhelmed by voices or—” I trailed off again, not wanting to get too deep into it. I had already said too much. The last thing I wanted was to go from Puppy to Freak.

Luckily, Kylan didn’t push further. When he noticed I was done s

VioletI didn’t expect Kylan to tell him that, and did not really know why he did, but by the smile on Dad’s face, I could tell he appreciated those words. It meant a lot to him.“You seem like a good kid…a good man who takes care of his mate,” Dad spoke in response. He scratched his jaw like he wasn’t totally sure how to say the rest, but the message had come across. He had not spent much time with Kylan, but he approved of him, and he wanted him to know.“Same goes for you,” he then nodded his head toward Dylan.“I disagree,” little Dylan cut in, spilling his opinion even though no one asked for it. He scoffed. “I think both misses could do better, and they should run while they still have the ch—”Dad put his hand over Dylan’s mouth. All we heard after that were muffled sounds.“Like I said. The Moon Goddess has done a good job.” Dad smiled, calm and proud. There was a brief silence again as Dad’s eyes searched mine.“Will we see you again?”My chest tightened. He wasn’t asking it

Violet“I think we’ve got all the answers we need,” Kylan responded.A light chuckle escaped Dad’s lips. He nodded once and took a step back to let us pass. It was really hard to just keep my mouth shut, but at the same time, I didn’t know if staying over for lunch to eat chicken crispy sandwiches was a good idea.Dad didn’t force us to stay, didn’t beg...he just let us go, and a part of me shattered as Kylan pulled me away, down the creaking steps.I could hear Dad right behind us. When we reached the bottom of the stairs, the first thing I saw was Little Violet, who had already made her way down, hugging Trinity tightly.Trin was already standing by the door beside Dylan, who had his hands shoved in his pockets as he observed his younger self. Little Dylan leaned against the wall, his arms crossed and eyes narrowed as if he was still trying to figure us out.It was funny, honestly. Even as a kid, he had that same judgmental and curious look. Most of the men here were like Dylan, and

Violet“Violet,” I said softly, leaning closer. Kylan’s eyes were locked on mine, but he still held on to Little Violet. “You said Thorne is preparing…right? Do you know what for? What are Baelor and Gloria planning?”Little Violet blinked slowly, her breathing uneven. “Baelor…” she whispered. “He wants to open the gate.”“The gate?” Kylan repeated. “What gate?”“The one Mommy talks about when she thinks I’m asleep,” she said. “The ghost with the black hair keeps the monsters in. I see her too sometimes when I pretend to sleep, but she is not scary,” she rambled. “She always touches my hair and sings to me, b-but I haven’t seen her lately.”The girl with the black hair…That had to be Adelaide.Kylan met my gaze, and I felt a flutter in my chest. There were just so many things I couldn’t remember anymore, such as Adelaide showing herself to me before. That wasn’t something I ever wanted to forget.“If you’re not going to cry, you need to focus, Violet,” Kylan reminded me. “Try to ask

VioletThe walls were painted lavender, covered in hand-drawn flowers and stars I had made with Mom and Dad’s help, and paper butterflies hung from the ceiling. I told Dad I wanted them, and he had hung them not even twenty-four hours later because that was Greg. There were far too many toys, but the highlight was the dollhouse in the corner. The one Dad had also built by hand. He had even decorated it down to the ribbons, the tiny wooden furniture, and even my name, which was carved into the roof.It was all memories I had tried so hard to forget. Not me, but all of us. That’s why my chest ached as I took it all in.“You’re doing great,” Kylan whispered, his hand pressing gently against my back. I took a shaky breath and turned toward him. Anything to avoid facing these memories, no matter how good it felt to be here.“I don’t know how much longer I can do this,” I whispered back. “I’m sorry.”“Don’t be,” Kylan reassured with a smile. “I couldn’t have done what you’re doing right now

VioletKylan couldn’t laugh this time, but neither could I. I had almost forgotten that Dylan also used to be a real pain in the ass.Dad cleared his throat, trying to change the subject, but Kylan decided to play along. “Really?” he said. “What makes you say that?”Little Dylan shrugged. “I just told you. It’s that look in your eyes.”Before Kylan could respond, the younger girl had already slammed her tiny hands on the table, standing on her toes to speak up. “No, he doesn’t look Lyperian!” she defended. “Uncle Ewan always says the Lyperians are ugly, remember?”“Yes, from the inside—stupid.”“You are stupid, Dork Face!”Dylan and I glanced at each other, both biting back a laugh.Dork Face?Could I really not have come up with something better?“Kids!” Dad scolded, ruffling our hair with a sigh. “Violet, sit down.” He then looked at Kylan. “Sorry about that.”“It’s fine,” Kylan replied calmly, though I could tell he was holding himself back. If those two had known each other as chi

VioletI could hear Dad’s soft mumbling as he made tea in the kitchen, and my younger self begging to help. I didn’t need to look to know what was happening next door. Little me was probably standing on her tiptoes, reaching for the counter, handing him the sugar tin with both hands, thinking she was really contributing. There was nothing I wanted more than to run over and take a closer look, but as we sat around the round table, waiting for our tea, my legs just wouldn’t move.It felt strange because this was my house, yet somehow it wasn’t, and I didn’t want to intrude.Everything looked exactly as I remembered it. The walls were lined with family pictures and little hand-painted frames I forced Mom and Dad to put up. The Bloodrose scent of pine was still hard to get rid of, and I could still hear every creak of the wooden floor. After Mom and Dad passed, I hadn’t set foot here again. No one did, and now the place was covered in green, with plants crawling up the walls, and grass gr
