Violet

“Mom said it was a favor from an old friend,” I replied, sighing as I thought of her. The one who had always supported me, no matter what.

Both her, and Dad.

I had always been extra careful with my glasses because I did not have a choice. I had replaced the frames many times, but never the glasses. Lyperian stone was rare and not replaceable now that it no longer existed.

The glasses were as important as my life. Without them, I had no control over anything.

“How does the stone help you with your problem?” Kylan asked, scooting his body a bit closer.

A warm smile crept onto my lips at his genuine interest. He had become even more curious now that he knew the materials came from Lyperia.

“It helps block out certain energies. Without it, I get overwhelmed by voices or—” I trailed off again, not wanting to get too deep into it. I had already said too much. The last thing I wanted was to go from Puppy to Freak.

Luckily, Kylan didn’t push further. When he noticed I was done s

Violet“I got it under control,” Kylan released a quiet sigh, still pretending to be more interested in the book in front of him. “You don’t need to worry about that.”I squinted my eyes. “You’ve got it under control, how?”This time, he released a heavier sigh before finally looking up at me. His dark eyes pierced through mine. “Did you see Kayden’s reaction when I made Camille dig?”I frowned, thinking back. When Kylan had pushed Camille, there had been this look in Kayden’s eyes that I couldn’t quite explain.“In his own crazy way, he’s already claimed her,” Kylan continued. “He won’t allow the ceremony to happen. So I don’t worry about it…and neither should you because it will all be okay,” Kylan said. “Whatever happens will be between him and the king, and we just need to focus on the box and whatever’s behind it before the King decides to make his next move.”“Do you think he’ll make a move?” I asked, curious. “Do you really believe the box is connected to everything that still

VioletOne minute I had been spending the whole day locked away in Madam Renata’s room, and the next Kylan had suddenly dragged me down the hall. His grip was firm, and our fingers tangled as he walked with a purpose. I stared down at his hands, still trying to figure out what was going on. We were obviously headed somewhere, and wherever that was, he seemed serious about it.“Where are we going?” I asked after a while.“Library,” Kylan responded. “We need to find out more about the box so we’ll know what to do at midnight.”I blinked up at him, surprised. This wasn’t the same Kylan I had been dealing with these past few days. The one who had been quiet, distant…not fully present. Something had changed from this morning, and he had a focus I hadn’t seen in a while.I couldn’t help but wonder what it might’ve been.“How did it go this morning?” he asked suddenly.“With…Nate?” I whispered his name. I watched Kylan’s expression slowly, worried I would somehow ruin whatever peace he had f

KylanI closed the envelope in my hands and let out a long breath. I think I lost count of how many times I had turned it over or read it to make sure nothing was being left out.Violet’s words from this morning hadn’t left my mind. She looked at me with those innocent but determined eyes and told me what I already knew but didn’t want to face…I was losing focus. It wasn’t because I didn’t care, but because I had too many emotions and didn’t know how to handle them. I had been uneasy long before I went to see Nate, and even more so after. The truth was, I wasn’t ready to see him that day. I went anyway because I thought maybe I could fix things just by showing up, but it didn’t fix anything. It made it worse. It wasn’t that I didn’t care, but I just didn’t know what to say. I had the words in my head, but none of them ever made it out right, and the last time I had been that speechless was years ago…back when everything first started falling apart. But that was certainly not an excuse

VioletNate sighed as if it wasn’t a big deal. But I knew it was…“My parents have been searching for her.”“Oh no!” Kaelis gasped dramatically. Even through her tone, I could hear the fake concern. She didn’t care about Chrystal and had made her opinion on her very clear the first time I met her.“Have you seen her around?” Jack asked.Kaelis shook her head quickly. “No. I’m sorry.”Please don’t ask me, please don’t ask me…Then his eyes landed on me. “Violet?”My chest rose and fell, and I began to panic. The blood was probably draining from my face because what could I even say? How could I ever lie to this man?A warm hand brushed against mine. Shocked, I eyed Nate, who gave me a reassuring smile. “Have you seen her?” He played along.I swallowed hard. “No,” I said softly. “I haven’t…”Jack hummed. “It’s not the first time she’s done this,” he exhaled. “She’ll make sure we can’t find her to worry us, and usually her little disappearances only last a day or two, but for some reason

VioletWe sat around the table, the smell of Kaelis’s chicken soup filling the air. A big smile was plastered on her face. “You are going to love this, Nate!” she said, scooping big portions into everyone’s bowls. “I worked so hard on this!”She said it with a grin that made it impossible not to smile back.I looked from Kaelis to Nate. A small smile was on his lips as he looked down at the soup. “You didn’t have to do this,” he mumbled.“But I want you to get better,” Kaelis said. “I’ll get us some drinks!”She hurried out of the room, shutting the door behind her. My eyes turned to Nate again as he stared down at the bowl in front of him with the spoon in his hand. I could tell he was thinking about something, probably a lot of things, and there was probably so much more he wanted to vent about, but felt like he couldn’t.“Enjoy your meal,” I said.I brought my spoon to my lips and took a bite, feeling the hot soup against my tongue. But the taste was…a little off.My eyes shot to N

VioletHis voice cracked slightly, and as I stared into his eyes, I could tell that they were red. An obvious sign of the Lunaris.Kaelis was right there, but he wasn’t looking at her. He was looking at me.“Where’s Kylan?”“He’s not here,” I said quickly.A crooked chuckle came to his lips. “Of course not.”It was almost like he had wanted him to be here. I couldn’t speak, and just kept looking at him, dazed and unsure of what to do next. What had he been doing? What had kept him busy? And then, there it was. Another set of footsteps came from the stairs. Same as Kaelis, I looked up, and saw a girl. I recognized her immediately. She was one of the girls from Starlight, but we had never spoken. She must’ve been one of the handful of students who had traveled back to Lyperia for the feast.Nate’s face changed right away, like he was embarrassed to have been caught. “Violet,” the girl said warmly as she reached the bottom of the stairs. “We meet again!”“Yes…” I managed, blinking fast.
