Chapter 35

Darkness.

A constant beeping sound could be heard in the room, and I was pretty sure there was something in my arm.

My body felt light and my head was a bit fuzzy, but the only thing that hurt the most was my upper stomach; a softer one though. You know that feeling when someone socked you and even after the hit, the pain would still sting and throb—yup, that’s what it felt like.

I took in a deep breath through my nose, inhaling something that smelled like chemicals all over the place, including Zaliver’s scent. I felt fine wherever I was, knowing his presence would make me feel secured. The room was cold and I felt like I was on a small bed, but not the bed Zaliver or I slept in. Thinking of him made me recall something, but just as fast as it came, my thoughts were gone . . . Now, what was it?

I tried to remember the last time I saw him, but all I could remember was hearing his voice. What was he saying? Something about . . . a gift? Why would he buy me a gift when it wasn’t my birt

Zaliver’s eyes met mine as he talked to the doctor; his face was serious and determined. I looked back at him, hoping my expression would tell him that I wanted to know what was going on, but he looked away. I sighed and kicked my feet. Why wouldn’t they tell me what was wrong? I’d been fine in the morning when he was here and as soon as he left I just . . . Fell into a funk, but I was fine.Hearing his voice had made me extremely happy and then all of a sudden, it felt like I was getting torn apart from the inside. Maybe he was right—I needed to shift more, but I’ve never heard of anything like this. I needed to talk to my wolf, but for that to happen, the drugs had to be out my system first. I didn’t realize Zaliver was in front of me until I looked up, too distracted because of my thoughts.I stared up into his secretive blue eyes, and he looked back at me as well. I noticed that the doctor and the nurse were trying to leave so I hopped off the bed and attempted to stop them, but m

I was running.I was running for my life.I was running for my freedom.I was running for my very own nature.I was running from the last person I’d thought I’d run from in my life.I was running from my mate.I was running from Zaliver.I couldn’t hear him because of the pounding in my ears. The sound of my heart was like a hummingbird’s wings. The twigs and dead leaves echoed in the silent forest. But I knew. I knew he was close by, and that made me push myself harder, my hair whipped around my face as I looked around for anything to gain leverage. I couldn’t run forever, and my body couldn’t handle it. But he could.Because he wasn’t like me. He wasn’t like any of us. I felt tears of fear and panic stream down my face, and my muscles ached for a break, but I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. My vision blurred because of the tears making it hard to see my direction. My emotions were all over the place with confusion, disbelief, fear, betrayal, anger, and hatred. Yes, hatred for my own mate. He

A killing machine? Zaliver . . . My mind went blank.“I have all this power and control, but for what?” He suddenly gave a humorless laugh and backed away from me, shaking his head side to side. I watched him carefully as he gave off an odd vibe.“We were all humans chosen and trained for them, but I didn’t know what we were trained for. They had such tremendous mind control back then. We were all like family with the soldiers, but we rarely saw the all mighty gods. We weren’t allowed to interfere with them unless called upon. We used to worship them. I did worship them. I don’t remember much of my past life, but I do remember one person—my brother.” My head snapped back in surprise.“Brother?” I asked. He nodded.“Yeah, I had a brother and they slaughtered him.” My eyes widened in disbelief. It was horrible and I had a feeling it wasn’t even the worse.“Okay, technically , I slaughtered him.” I thought my heart had stopped for a moment.“They demanded for the loyalty that we had as b

He looked down at me with a sad look on his face, but I ignored the pull that wanted me to hug him, comfort him.“While we aren’t the only couple of mates who haven’t marked each other, we are the only ones with special conditions.”“What do you mean?” What conditions? A crazy mate and a kidnapee?“All in do time Vivian,” he said. “Because of that we didn’t feel what was happening,we were spending almost all day and all night together so the bond was fine. But when I left to go on my trip, the growing distance made the bond strain and with no mark it had consequences. I apologize for that, I should have seen this. Since my body is different from yours, only you felt the pain. I went through a different reaction.”I listened carefully to his explanation, but the more he spoke the less sense isn’t made to me. Sure mates weren’t meant to be apart for long, but they could still be apart without pain. Zaliver hadn’t even been gone for a full day and I almost died because we had been apart.

“Why do you keep thinking someone’s trying to take me from you!? No one likes me Zaliver. Everyone in your pack has stayed away from me out of fear of having you snap their necks. You have no reason to be like this; it makes no sense! I’m surprised you even like me!” I yelled at him, trying to make him see his mistakes.“No, they’ve stayed away from you because I ordered them to. I knew that once they realized how kind and beautiful you are inside and out, they’d want to become friends with you and that would take your time away from me. Honestly woman, you underestimate how much I crave your whole being. I want you; all of you—your time, thoughts, desires and wishes, your body, pleasure, I want all of you,” he confessed, motioning with his hands.I really did underestimate him. While it was sweet, it was also bothersome that it led me to believe Zaliver had more issues than he was letting on. Issues that I wasn’t sure I could help him with.“Okay, but that doesn’t mean they’re going

His large form was crouched, blending in the dark. I could only see its two shiny black eyes that reflected the little light that the night gave off. I could see a white cloud forming as he exhaled out. My chest dropped that I held my breath, hoping he would do nothing.Slowly, he straightened his body to his towering height. His right foot slid over the ground in my direction followed by the other. It felt like I was on my way to my coffin with each step he took. I wanted to close my eyes and wake up to somewhere else. I wanted to run but I couldn’t. My body was frozen in exhaustion and shock. I couldn’t even feel my legs.He was right. He was faster, stronger, and better than a werewolf. No werewolf would be able to run through the forest without making a sound, appearing behind me without even me sensing him. He was the ultimate wolf race. He was powerful. The closer he got, the faster my heartbeat went. I couldn’t breath. He was too much to handle. I was overwhelmed and felt like

I groaned at the constant itch on my nose that made me lift my hand and scratch it, but it would always come back forcing me awake.I blinked my eyes open and squinted at the fluffy white thing blocking my eyesight. My brows furrowed in confusion. I heard a deep chuckle, so I looked around the feather that was being held by the culprit—Zaliver. He was kneeling next to my side of the bed with an amused smile on his face. I immediately wanted to smile at him, but the memories from last night resurfaced.I pursed my lips at him, not saying anything. His smile fell a little, and he didn’t say anything about it. My stomach then growled at the scent of fresh streaming food close by. Pulling the large feather away from my face, he revealed one of those small bed tables with breakfast on it, as well as a single red rose. I glanced at Zaliver.“Good morning, beautiful. Breakfast in bed to start your morning,” he murmured softly, his eyes with excitement and joy gazing at me. I might be angry,

I suddenly heard a snap. I turned my head to the direction of the sound. Then, I heard a shuffling noise and a continuous thumping sound. I stood up for a few minutes before realizing what I was hearing—a wolf running with a pounding heart. But the thing was miles away. Far enough to strain a werewolf’s hearing.I blinked in surprise. Sure, I could hear everything else around me, but the things I had heard before were in sight and close by.I sighed. I was already changing, and it hadn’t even been twenty-four hours since I was bitten. Did I really have one to two weeks, as what Zaliver guessed I would have, before the change? Or was he wrong?By now, the wolf had gotten closer and was about to burst through the forest in a few seconds.A brown-coated wolf ran out of the forest. It hadn’t noticed me yet, but when it did, I could tell it was taken by surprise because it tripped the moment it lifted its head in my direction. Its front legs froze but its back legs continued moving. I knew

Whistling, I walked around him and whipped my fingers on my shirt.I wrapped my hand around his neck and lifted him out of the chair, making him thrash once more.“Ready to talk? No? Okay. This ought to change your mind,” I said after he spat on the ground as an answer. With one hand around his neck, I thrust my other hand into his lower mid back, going through the skin and pushing my hand into his flesh. I wrapped my hand around his spinal cord and pulled.Snap! His lower half slumped. I pulled my hand out and left half of his spine hanging out of his back. Walking to the front again, I whipped my bloodied hand on his face and smiled as he gave little twitches. His eyes were wide with horror and pain. He seemed to be frozen in shock.“Y-you’re a monster. You’ll go to h-hell,” he managed to say.“Of course I will. Someone needs to take the throne.”I laughed and walked back around him.~•~I clasped the back of Jack’s shoulder and shook him roughly, leaning forward in a serious and sl

I swiped my hand across his chest, leaving four deep claw marks over his chest to which he immediately let out a cry. His wounds began to bleed out and then slowly, so slowly, it began to heal.I made eye contact with him. Pale and sweaty, he glared at me with as much hatred as he could. We hadn’t even begun but he was already throwing glares at me.Swiping at the remaining part of his shirt, I tore it away from his top body, not wanting anything to stand in the way of the next process. He’d be lucky if I didn’t get to his back; that is if he died in this process, of course.“You can’t heal flesh if you don’t have any,” I said darkly, humor thick in my wild-like voice. The beast enjoyed it.He reached out and dug his claws in the top part of Jack’s left shoulder, ignoring the boy’s cry and cutting out the shape of a square on both of his sides. Looking at Jack deeply in the eyes, the beast put his claws under Jack’s skin before it could begin to heal, and pulled downward, yanking the

Zaliver AzralaI stood in front of the metal bolted black door, hearing Jack Ruston struggle against the chains that held him to his chair. If I focused enough, I would see his immense body heat moving through the door, but I didn’t.I heard footsteps approaching me from my right.“Is this what I asked for you to set?” I asked without turning to look at Albericus who grunted out a yes. I nodded at him, making him walk away.My beast grew more and more excited at the prospect of having fun now, finally having someone he was going to sink his claws into for this whole mess. I couldn’t agree more. He paced back and forth within me, lifting its head up and then looking at the black door in front of me. He lunged at it as if he was really doing it. He tried to force me to do so, but I held him back.“Patience . . . You will get your turn,” I murmured to him. When Albericus informed me of the quick and efficient capture and imprisonment of Jack, I was glad. The little rat sat with panic and

Making my way back to the park, I made my way quickly and made sure I looked like I was in a hurry, keeping my head down to avoid having the blood on my face seen by others and get stopped before I’d even make it. The sun was low in the sky, giving off a dramatic and beautiful flare of different shades in the sky. It was perfect.Once I made it a few steps, I began probably one of the best performances in my life.I began pacing back and forth, looking down and shaking my head. I stopped and sat down, bringing my knees to my chest and rocking back and forth very quickly. I then let out sounds of distress. My ears caught the sound of mumbles and slow approaching steps of four hearts. Without having to smell the air, I knew it would be them. They weren’t nearing me fast enough as if not sure what was going on.“Ohhh! I’m so confused! So lonely!” I cried out pathetically. I was feeling so emotionally cold that I was finding it hard not to snort at how flat it sounded. The moment I stood

“But I really should return this; could be important.” I smiled at their surprise and horrified expressions. My sensitive ears picked up a sound—the vibration of a phone. My eyes scanned them, realizing it was coming from the red headed guy.I lifted a brow at him.“Aren’t you going to get that? Might be important .”Shaking his head, he reached into his pocket and took the phone out with a grimace. Pressing the answer button , he brought the phone up to his pale face, which just seemed to lose more and more color over time. The other line answered.“Hello?” he mumbled, looking straight at me.The line on the other side followed his exact same words.“ Mmhh ,” I mumbled, ending the call and pocketing my phone.“Okay, spill. Who are you and why do you have my number, which then leads me to asking why are you following me?” I ask them seriously. I wanted to know what these familiar people were up to and where we met, not to mention why they appeared to be following me.“Look,” the tall

The four strangers didn’t turn to face me; they just stood still. My phone stopped ringing.“Maybe if we don’t move,” the tall blond man began to whisper.“Shut up!” the short red-haired guy whisper-shouted, interrupting the other.“I can’t believe this,“ a tall woman with her dark hair pulled back muttered. Her pony tail moved side to side as she shook her head.“We are so dead,” another with a similar hairdo said.I wasn’t sure what to do. They were all muttering stuff under their breath and not turning around to face me, but that thing with the phone was weird. They couldn’t have called me, right? That would mean that they had been talking about me the whole time. I shook my head mentally. There was no way they were here for me; it must have just been some crazy coincidence.I knew that any other person would have stayed away from them, but something told me they weren’t dangerous. Well I mean, they looked like they were ready for action, but personally, I felt like they wouldn’t h

“Hey, Dad . . .” I began. I guess my tone caught his attention because he frowned.“What’s up?” he said, leaning onto the desk and turning his body to face in my direction with concerned eyes. I groaned and threw my head back, taking a deep breath. I thought for a second before speaking to him.“Do you—I don’t know—ever get the feeling like you’ve forgotten something really important?” I asked. He nodded at me, clasping his hands in front of him.“Plenty of times. Just the other day, I forgot to tell your mother I—” I shook my head at him.“No, like you shouldn’t be doing what you’re doing even though it makes perfect sense as if you’re supposed to be somewhere else doing something else?” I swung my legs over and sat up, placing a hand on both knees. Dad looked at me for a moment before an understanding look crossed his face. For a moment, I thought he understood me.“Is this about you not being in college yet? Because it’s okay to take a year off—” I stood and threw my hands up in fr

I stopped clicking and let the Vampire Diaries play. As soon as Damon came on, my breath hitched. It wasn’t because of his hotness. Looking at him made me go blank. I blinked multiple times and made a face. I squinted at the screen when a sense of déjà vu hit me. Black and blue. I shrugged and kept flickering through the TV.“Somebody saaave meee!—”“I got in one lil fight, and my mom got scared—”“Next up, Hannah Mon—”“I’m not your dad—” I went back.“ . . . tana. ” My brows furrowed in confusion.Staring at the screen, I frowned.“Hannah. Hannah. Hannah?” The name rolled off my tongue without thought. Something about that name. Eh, I was too old to watch this.Slap “Whore! ”“Oookay,” I mumbled to myself, quickly changing the channel.“What are you wearing Jake from State Farm?” My head tilted to the side.“Uhh . . . khakis.”“She sounds hideous.”I turned the TV off. Why did I get the feeling like I had compared someone to Jake from State Farm before? Man, it had been a weird coup

Going back into my own mind and body, I grinned at the boys, not caring how they both tensed and the worry and fright that wafted off of them. I nodded at Albericus. He quickly focused on me, understanding that the next few hours were about to get a whole lot more productive.Any tiredness in my body vanished. My body straightened up and my shoulders rolled back. I tilted my head side to side, cracking the joints. I didn’t even care that my hair was hanging over my eyes anymore. If anything, I knew it made the look on my face a whole lot more chilling. I pointed a finger at my beta and good friend.“Put Jack Ruston into a room under the cells. You’ll find him hiding four blocks away from where his mate lived. It is a rundown hotel that goes by the name Legrove at room 42. If he hears you, he’ll hide out on the roof. Bring him to me. Now go.” Without another word, Albericus shouted in the room, yelling orders into his phone to assemble a team with fierce green eyes and go back to their
