Prologue
At the dawn of the year, fourteen hundred, the Lycans came out of hiding and brought war onto Humans. The Lycans were powerful and skilled in combat, unlike the humans. They conquered the Humans and ruled over them. The Lycan King of that century was cruel and turned every Human into a slave or a sex worker. After two hundred years, from the human slaves came a man with the name Vitalis. He despised the werewolves and their rule, along with some other Humans. They secretly learned combat skills from the Lycan army. Once they became strong, they led a war against the Lycans. They were strong but not as strong as the Lycans. They fought well and slew one-fourth of the Lycans, while their numbers remained less than half. The Lycan King decided to end the war by bringing forth a proposition. He offered a treaty for peace to reign, he wanted to ally with Humans. In exchange for peace to reign, he would marry the first daughter of Vitalis, whom he thought was beautiful. Vitalis was reluctant but the other Humans convinced him to relent, that his sacrifice would last for generations to come.Vitalis agreed and gave his daughter's hand in marriage to the Lycan King. Because of the bravery and sacrifice made by Vitalis, he was crowned the King of the Humans. The treaty of peace would hold so long as every century, a Vitalis daughter would marry the then Lycan King. But they could not predict what would befall them in the hundreds of years to come.***Chapter 1Hope"Light, are you ready?" I asked my twin, and her green eyes glinted in mischief as she nodded. We both took off our robes, then dove into the open lake, making loud splash sounds. Once we resurfaced, our smiles mirrored each other.Even though we were twins, we looked nothing alike. Our only similarities were the shape of our eyes—siren—and the colors of our hair—jet black. And while I wore my hair long, Light wore hers short. That was where the similarities stopped, we even had different mannerisms. We danced inside the lake, giggling, playing, and singing. Crows flew above us in the bright sky. I looked up, watching them for a while before I turned my attention back to Light."I'm going to miss you," I whispered. She smiled sadly, then burst into a fit of laughter."Stop talking like I'm going away forever. I'm just getting married, it's not that huge. Besides, you can come visit me anytime you want." She said flippantly, then started swimming back to shore.I chased after her. By the time I got to land, she had already worn her robe and was drying her hair. I walked out of the water and did the same."Really? I can come visit anytime?" I asked with uncertainty. She nodded, throwing the towel away."You can even come live with Darius and I." She suggested."Darius…" I repeated. The name tasted bitter in my tongue. He was the Lycan King who Light was going to get married to.I had only met him once, and that was when my family and I were invited to the Lycan Palace for Light's engagement two years ago. He was mean and looked like he wanted to kill everyone on sight.Somehow, Light said that was just his resting face, and that he was very nice—at least to her. I didn't think he was nice. I was afraid for my sister who was going to chain herself down to him."Yes, sister. My soon-to-be husband is the best person in the world. I can't wait to finally be with him." Light said with a lovestruck tone, and I stared at her blankly."He doesn't look like it," I muttered as we started walking back home to our castle. Light laughed."Trust me," she said, looking into my eyes. "He's harmless."I didn't say anything after that until we got back to the castle. The time set for Light's wedding was drawing close, so I bid Light farewell in the meantime, then decided to go back to my chambers and prepare myself. My handmaids kept on gushing about how beautiful the Lycans they had seen were. I couldn't care less for their beauty. I only cared about how they would treat my sister once she went away with them.Once my maids were done preparing me, I looked at myself through my dressing mirror. They had braided my hair with pins adorning each side, then planted a tiara at the top of my head. My cleavage was on for show and my corset was a bit too tight. My maids said that I had to look beautiful as I would be the next to get married, and men would be watching me.I was wearing pink—the color for waiting maidens. I didn't like being considered a maiden. I turned to my maids, my light brown eyes fixated on them."Thank you," I said to the three ladies, and they bowed their heads in respect. "I have to go get Light now. I'll see you all after the wedding." I added, then walked out of my chambers and sought for Light. Her room was down the hall, away from mine. We had been put in separate rooms because Light fought for her privacy when she was thirteen. I had no problem with whatever she wanted so I had agreed with her then.Once I came face-to-face with her door, I knocked twice, then waited for her to answer. After ten seconds of silence, I decided to knock again."Light? It is me, your sister. Open the door." I said, knocking repeatedly but I was met with silence. I turned the handle of the door and discovered that the door was open all along.I let out a sigh, then walked inside the room. "Light? I've come to fetch you. Your wedding is about to start. The moon is bright, isn't it?" I walked around the room, searching for Light, but I found her nowhere.I decided to check her washroom but it was empty. Where was she?"Light? Where are you? Are you trying to trick me?" I went to her bed, pulling away the cover but she wasn't hiding underneath it.I marched for her windows, checking the curtains to see if she hid behind them but she wasn't there as well. I started to panic. I clutched my chest as I raced to my parents' study room. People along the way tried to tell me that running was 'unladylike' but I paid them no mind.I only stopped running when I got to the room, not waiting to catch my breath before I started ranting off."Mother, Father. There's a problem." I said breathlessly, and they both looked at me with wide eyes. They were already dressed in fancy attires for Light's wedding. They both looked panicked and quite uneasy but I shrugged it off. My Mother reached out to me, as though she wanted me to calm down but I couldn't do that."I went to Light's room to fetch her but she wasn't there. I searched the entire chamber but I couldn't find her. I fear that she might have run away. I don't understand. We just parted ways to get ready but she's not anywhere anymore!" I raised my voice gradually as I spoke, and my parents paled."Should we send in guards to check round the castle? Maybe I'm just being paranoid and she's somewhere in the castle. Or did Light seriously run away? If she did, then why?" I tried to wrap my head around the entire thing."You tell me." A deep masculine voice said from behind me, and a shiver ran down my spine.I slowly turned around, and my eyes met black onyx ones that looked devoid of emotions. His being vacuumed all the air in the room as well as the one inside my lungs. He stood tall and dark.King Darius Moratis.Chapter 2HopeDarius looked like he was in the mood for killing. Killing me. I gulped down on my saliva as I stared at him, not knowing what else to do.My parents had rushed to my aid, trying to create a barrier between the King of the Lycans and myself."Your Majesty, never mind Hope. Light must be playing somewhere around the castle. You know that, don't you? That she plays a lot." My Father said with a rushed tone, then added a nervous laugh. He sounded nothing like how a person who bore the name 'Vitalis' should sound. Then again, for the past few hundred years, the Vitalis' had not upheld the glory of the name. My Mother also let out a nervous laugh, supporting my Father.Darius regarded them as specks of dust. He walked right past them and stood a few paces in front of me. His red lips were pressed into a thin firm line as he looked down at my short figure. Compared to his six-foot-seven height, I looked like a child. Hells, every Human who stood next to him looked like a chi
Chapter 3HopeMy entire being froze up. I could not believe what my ears were hearing and my eyes were seeing. My fingers started to fiddle on their own as my breathing turned uneven. "I don't approve of your suggestion. This daughter of yours has nothing to offer," Darius glanced back at me, his eyes raked across my body from my head, down to my toes, then back up to settle on my breasts. He didn't look interested in them the slightest bit, only curious. He turned back to my Father. "I want Light and no one else. That was the deal. Find her and get her to return the Morati knife to me." Darius said with a firm tone.My Father trembled on the spot as he racked his brain for another suggestion. My Mother was ahead of him, she threw herself in front of the Lycan King with desperacy written all over her features."Your Majesty, Hope is a fine young lady. She will bring you no trouble. She is beautiful, well-mannered, and most important of all, quiet. She is very quiet." My Mother spoke
Chapter 4HopeI was married to the Lycan King. Everyone started to stand up from their seats to leave the wedding scene. I looked around me, searching for my parents but I found them nowhere among the dispersing crowd. My throat felt dry. Were they going to leave me all alone?I looked at the Lycan King—my husband—and he bore no expression on his beautiful face. He gripped my wrist once again as he started to yank me away from the scene. I tried to free myself, tugging my hand away from his grip.Once he noticed it, he stopped yanking me. "What?" he spat in annoyance and I gulped down on my saliva."My parents. I have to go bid them farewell and…" I trailed off as I saw the angry look on his face."They do not wish to see you. If they did, then they would have been the ones to seek you out instead of you going to them." He said, and I hated the logic behind his words. He started to move again, and I stopped him once more with a whimper. "My things. They haven't been packed yet. I c
Chapter 5HopeMy lips parted as I tried to assimilate Darius' words. Consummate this marriage? My throat felt dry and a scary shiver ran down my spine.I watched as Darius took a step into the room and locked the door behind him. My heart dropped at the act. He ambulated towards me like a predator going for the kill. Once he got to me, he gripped my wrist, raising it to his chest, and I gasped at the sudden act."Strip." He commanded, my heartbeat race sped up."Your Majesty, I can't—""I will not repeat myself one more time. Strip." He boomed with a loud voice, and I flinched. My heart was racing. I couldn't do what he asked of me. My chastity was all I had. If I yielded, he would taint and destroy me. Moreover, I was not supposed to be his wife, Light was. "King Darius, please. My innocence is all I have. I have never been with a man before." I explained, looking into his dead eyes, hoping to find some shred of sympathy in them but I couldn't find any.His eyes gave nothing of em
Chapter 6HopeI was terrified. I felt myself shrink that instant as Darius glared at me. I wanted to ask what made him so upset but he spoke up before I could do that."It's like you don't know where you are. You are in Moratia. The Lycan King's castle. You will learn to behave yourself while you reside here." He said with a no-nonsense tone and I wetted my lips unconsciously. He was still agitated about the meal incident. I had no idea that telling them the truth would be such a huge thing. I wasn't supposed to eat eggs and meat, what was so disrespectful about that?"My Mother—" I started to speak, but the look he threw my way caused the rest of my words to die down inside my throat."I do not want to hear any of that; anything about those spineless parents of yours," my lips parted but words refused to come out to defend my parents. "Since finding your sister has proven to be a challenge, I don't want to keep wrapping myself up in all of your useless family drama." Darius contin
Chapter 7HopeMy room wasn't locked the next day. I was scared about the fact of it not being locked from the outside after that day. Yes, the blond Lycan's words stuck to me, no matter how much I wanted them not to.Commander was the one who served me meals throughout the whole of yesterday, and I knew that she was not happy about it in the slightest manner. She ensured to sneer or indirectly insult me anytime she got a chance to.I wanted to call her out for being immature but I knew that I couldn't. She was the almighty commander of the Lycan army who was turned into a food server for the Lycan King's human wife. I somehow felt empathy for her situation. But that feeling didn't last long."You think being holed up in this room is going to change the fact that you're married to the most powerful person alive?" Commander asked me as I ate slowly, seated on my bed while she sat cross-legged on one of the chairs inside the room, watching me with her hawkish eyes. She and the blond Lyc
Chapter 8DariusI couldn't believe that I was married to someone who had no personality whatsoever. When I secretly went to the human lands to see who would be my bride at the age of ten, I found out that there were two princesses. The two had sat next to their grubby parents. They were both beautiful in their own way. One had an innocent beauty to her, everything about her seemed delicate and fragile. The other was feral. She had a regal and fierce beauty. They told me that the second one was whom I was going to get married to.I was pleased to know that my wife wouldn't be someone who shied away from the word 'lycan'. I came to regret that later on. Light was a sly thing. She knew what she wanted, and she took it with no care whatsoever. She had been to my palace countless times beforehand. She knew everyone and everything. She dictated my people in a queen-like manner. I hated her but she had what it took to rule. She was conniving, intelligent, and bold. She just decided to use
Chapter 9HopeI felt like crying. Why did Darius hate me so much? Why did he hate Light so much? It was like he had a personal vendetta against all humans but the one against the Vitalis' seemed doubled. I sat on my bed, hugging my knees. I didn't know if I could last in such a place for so long. He said they hadn't found any traces of Light yet. Did that mean that I would have to be married to him for long? And worse, none of my parents had contacted me since the wedding. How quick they were to just discard me to the den of monsters.A stray tear streamed down my eyes as that train of thought crossed my head. I was quick to wipe it away but that didn't stop it from falling. Gods, I hated crying so why did I do it all the time?Right on cue, the door to my room flew open, and that rude blond lycan stepped in. He vacuumed all the air his way with a small frown on his face. Suddenly feeling self-conscious, I wiped my tears away and stood up to my feet.Thankfully, I was still wearing
Chapter 78Hope Kyle was quick. It didn't take up to two days and he had already set up a meeting with the witch for me. According to him, she wanted to keep her name and location a secret. So, instead of leaving the castle to meet her, she would be the one to come over. I had no problems with this, as all I wanted to do was get this phase of my life over and done with. She arrived at midnight. Earlier today, I had told Darius not to come to my room since I wanted to rest well and him being around would only disturb and irritate me.Though he had been against it because of his recent overprotective behavior, I still managed to wear him down at the end of the day.By the time the witch arrived, I was seated by the window in my room. She and Kyle entered so quietly that I didn't even notice them until they had gotten close to the window. The moon was incredible bright this night and my room was brightened with lamps and lit candles. The witch was dressed as a castle worker to avoid sus
Chapter 77 Hope When I regained consciousness, I saw that Darius was sitting on the side of my bed with a worried look on his face. I let out a soft sigh, and he jerked into action, noticing that I was finally awake. "How are you? How do you feel? Hope, are you alright?" he questioned. I rolled my eyes and stretched to take a sitting position on the bed. "I'm fine, just a little tired and thirsty." Darius quickly took the cue to stand up from the bed and pour in a glass of water from a jug and gave it to me. I emptied the glass and handed it back to him. "Hope, I was so worried. It's all my fault. I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have kept you up working all night. I should've—" "It's not your fault, quit acting so pitiful," I chided him. "It was just a sunstroke. And I'm not the first person in the world to get dizzy under the sun. Stop worrying unnecessarily." "You say that so easily, but I wouldn't be able to bear it if something bad happened to you. You've been so moody these da
Chapter 76HopeA cold chill slapped my face after Darius said that word. It was foolish of me to have expected that something like war would be taken care of with no hitches along the way.And because of this reason, I softened up a little and used a small voice to say, "I want to see. Show me what you're doing." Darius stared at me for a little while before shaking his head negatively. "It's nothing. You don't need to bother yourself with things like this. Please, go and rest. I'll take care of everything."Darius must have thought that saying such things would put my mind at ease but all that it did was anger me as I raised the volume of my voice and said:"You'll take care of everything and I should go rest? Have you forgotten that I'm the queen of this kingdom? I should rest while you deal with the brunt of things and I remain a silly little oblivious queen. Is that what you want me to be? You want me to be stupid and ignorant for you?"Darius immediately stood up from his chair
Chapter 75HopeI turned around to look at who just spoke. To my surprise, it was Thomas—the grumpy son of the commander. There was a clear frown on his face as he came forward. But before he could step in front of me, Kyle stood between us."Her majesty was not speaking to you, back away." Kyle said with a firm tone.Thomas glared at him and said, "So what if she wasn't talking to me? Is it a bad thing for me to offer myself to my queen?"His last two words were coated with deep sarcasm that I couldn't even ignore. I patted Kyle on his shoulder, gesturing for him to step aside. He did so, but begrudgingly.I faced Thomas and asked, "You want to fight me?" He didn't even bother to hide the defiance in his tone as he said, "Yes, and so what?" I smiled, surprising the kid who was one or two years younger than me. "Okay then, let's spar." Kyle stepped forward, probably about to stop me but I held my hand up and gave him a look, causing him to step back. I spoke to him with my eyes, an
Chapter 74Hope Darius marched over to Kyle and I with a sudden possessive aura clouding his being."Her majesty was attacked by a spy posing as a human maid," Kyle explained solemnly.Upon hearing Kyle's explanation, Darius didn't ease up one bit as he told Kyle to get a physician and leave the two of us. Darius then replaced Kyle and led me to sit on the bed, his face painted with worry."I'm sorry," he said. "I should've gotten here faster. You wouldn't have gotten injured and I would've been able to catch the bastard who did this to you." Hearing him say such words, I couldn't help but chuckle a little bit. It was stupid because I believed him. He had done it once before, back then when there was nothing but hatred between the two of us.It got me thinking that maybe the assassin who snuck into my room that night could've been another of Light's underlings who was sent to kidnap me and bring me to her.I sighed mentally at the thought."I have something to tell you," I whispered
Chapter 73Hope I've put up with this long enough now. It was early morning, a week after 'forgiving' Darius. I was preparing to have breakfast with him when Gwendolyn began speaking."His Majesty has been treating you very preciously these days." It was only ten words but they stirred me up so bad that I stood up from my dressing chair and faced her. "Gwendolyn, you can stop putting on an act now." My voice was firm and my frown was even firmer. It took only a few seconds for her innocent expression to change. Her usual doe eyes narrowed to an almond shape and a wry smile made its way on her lips. She backed up a few steps and placed her hands on her waist. "How long have you known now?" she asked.I glared at her. "You know, I wasn't sure of anything until you just asked that question."Shock flashed her features, but it was too fast for me to decipher her level of surprise.I had always found Gwendolyn annoying and suspicious. But after the entire thing she told me about the st
Chapter 72 Hope "What are you trying to say? Are you trying to mock me or make me feel pity for you?" I questioned. "No, that's not what I'm trying to do. I can assure you," Darius said. I didn't believe. In fact, I didn't even want to believe him. I didn't want to sit here and listen to him wail about his childhood, trying to concoct an excuse for why he acted like a big bully. I liked myself and hated him too much to give him a chance to thaw my heart with his story. "Anyway, I had a very normal childhood fitting for someone that was to be king in the future," Darius heaved a sigh as he spoke. I unconsciously raised a questioning brow. If you had such a normal childhood, why did you then kill your family and make yourself such an unapproachable tyrant? As though he heard my thoughts, Darius said, "But growing up in such a way only made me weak, thought my parents. I wouldn't blame them, I was far too kind in the past." I almost snorted. "There was a time when I
Chapter 71Hope"Someone's looking pretty," Darius said with a smile the second he saw me.It was midnight and I had already dressed up, anticipating his arrival. I wasn't wearing anything especially pretty. Just a dark blue tunic with a pair of black trousers. My hair was parted at the middle and I donning a few jewelries around my neck, wrists, and fingers."Hm," I said in response to Darius."Don't you have anything to say about me?" he teased. He was also dressed as casually as I was. What was there to compliment him about? I turned away from him and said, "Stop fishing for compliments."He made a psh sound before putting out a hand for me. Begrudgingly, I placed my hand in his and unexpectedly, Darius leaned down and placed a kiss on my hand.I flinched and almost retracted my hand, but his hold was firm. He quickly roped an arm around me and began leading me out from my room.To be honest, I was curious about this 'date' of ours. What was Darius hoping to achieve? Why was he so
Chapter 70HopeAnd to think for a second I believed that Darius had summoned me for something important. The moment I stepped into his office, he had engulfed me and in a tight embrace and quickly assaulted my lips with his own.It took me a second to push him away and catch my breath. With a frown, I said, "Stop doing that. I hate it." "What do you hate exactly? Kissing? Or kissing me?" Darius questioned languidly."Both!" I bit out.He chuckled at this, then wrapped his arms around me once again. "What can I do to make you like them both?" "Nothing. And stop holding me!" I tried pushing him away but he held onto me tightly, refusing to let go."To think by now you'd know that physical contact is my love language," Darius said carelessly. The side of my lips tugged up in irritation. He could take his love language and shove it up his ass. I didn't want it. But Darius had other thoughts as his hands begin creeping to my erogenous zones.I bit my bottom lip to mask the shameless sou
