Chapter 19

I trudged along following the guards to my room. I had gone through a long day and I was exhausted.

As soon as we got to my rooms, the guards escorting me remained outside while I went into my room.

When I asked Arnou for more time, I had not anticipated a room arrest.

How on earth would I be able to find evidence if I cannot even leave my room?

All these thoughts plagued me as I disrobed and took a bath.

I reached out to rub the lavender-scented soap on my hair, but I stopped halfway and picked the one that smelled like roses instead.

It seemed like a lifetime ago when Arnou and I had kissed. I let out a sigh as I remembered the way he had wrapped his fingers in my hair and breathed in the scent of lavender that lingered on my skin.

I know it’s not Arnou’s fault this trial is taking place.

I mean I can hardly blame him for listening to the accusations but that did not mean Eva was ready to forgive him for this entire ordeal. She has been whimpering since in betrayal.

I sat there staring numbly at the whole proceedings. The same council generals that had sneered at me could literally not look me in the eye now that I had been proven innocent. The moment the maids mentioned Herley’s name, they were dragged out of court. For a moment I wondered if Arnou would not believe them. But then the pack members began to cry out in outrage until Herley was made to take the witness stand.Arnou stared straight at Herley in an unnerving manner for 10 minutes before he started speaking.“Herley, did you poison my grandmother?” Arnou asked her softly with disbelief in his eyes.“Of course, I did not. She’s like my grandmother Arnou.” Herley replied innocently.“Then explain to me and everyone at court why you lied about your encounter with Daciana and why the maids mentioned your name,” Arnou said as his voice began to grow angry.“I lied about nothing. When I met with Daciana in the kitchen, I will admit that the maids left the kitchen but that wasn’t because

The whole court went up in an uproar as people began to celebrate and hug each other.Tears of joy fell down my eyes as I got up ready to go see granny.Arnou looked equal parts shocked and ecstatic as he got up and adjourned the meeting. It was noon, and some of the pack members took the break as an opportunity to indulge in the rich food being supplied by the palace kitchen. Arnou ran down the hallway, closely followed by the general members and me. In the commotion, none of the guards bothered to hold me back. Although that could be because I had been proven innocent. In any case, we all soon arrived at granny’s door and only Arnou went inside.I stood outside granny’s door wishing and hoping she would be completely fine. Not only would her good health mean a lot to Arnou, but it would also exonerate me from all wrongdoing. We stood outside waiting for close to 45 minutes, during that time, palace maids came about and gave us some refreshments. Finally, after the long wait, Arnou

Chapter 22I stood up in shock so suddenly my chair knocked backward. The whole hall went up in uproar. Guards came up to drag the doctor away, probably to lock him up somewhere.Everyone had their own opinions about everything that had gone down, and the commotion automatically signaled the end of the trial. The whole thing was chaotic and I suddenly felt like I couldn’t breathe so I pushed my way out of the court. In my peripheral vision, I saw Arnou get up and push after me but I ran fast toward my room and shut the door.I remember how I had questioned the doctor on how sure he was that his diagnosis was currently considering the fact he didn’t carry out a test first. I remembered the way Arnou hadn’t stood up for me when Alisa had slapped me and insulted me for daring to propose that their doctor was incompetent.I sank to the floor behind my door and wept into my hands. I wept for all the embarrassment I had undergone for no reason. I couldn’t help but wonder if something was wr

After we all reconciled, Alisa, Arnou and I went to visit granny. I was nervous about seeing her, considering the last time I had seen her she was clutching her stomach and crying out in pain. When we got to granny’s door, Arnou went inside first and I followed slowly behind him.“Come here child, sit down, let me take a good look at you.” Granny said smiling as she beckoned me to sit beside her on the bed.I looked at her a bit bewildered at her lack of wariness towards me “Granny, I just want you to know that I’m really sorry about everything that happened. I sincerely apologize.” I was still apologizing when Arnou coughed loudly and I noticed that granny was looking at me weirdly.“What are you going on about? It’s not your fault I’m a little bit under the weather. In Fact I hear that you volunteered to take personal care of me.” Granny said with a chuckle.“Come now girl, there’s no need to feel sorry for me. I’ve got my strength back.” Granny said, smiling at me as I sat down

Chapter 24I stood still at the entrance of the garden as Herley cried out again in alarm.“Is anyone there?”I honestly didn’t care that she heard me, my mind was consumed by thoughts of my phone that contained major evidence. When I had fallen, my phone slipped out of my hands, and so I was furiously trying to find it.The person who was speaking to Herley did not make a sound, as Herley came inching toward my hiding spot.In a panic, I spun around desperately trying to find my phone.I finally found it under a rose bush. I went to pick it up and wasted no time sprinting back the way I came. While running, I made no effort to be quiet so Herley started chasing the source of the noise.I knew I couldn’t run back to my room because that would give me away, so I turned left and ran down to the servant’s quarters.I could hear Herley chasing after me, I turned back to see the distance she had gained. She was already so close.Ahead of me, the door to the servant’s quarters loomed and I k

Chapter 25I rapidly pressed the power button trying to bring the phone alive to no avail. The screen was well and truly smashed. I had no way of retrieving the recording unless I got the screen fixed.I went to the guards outside my room and requested for one of them to bring me Feyre.I paced my room up and down as I waited for her to show up. Arnou and I were scheduled to leave soon and she was taking too much time.Feyre arrived and I let her into my room. I had no idea if I could trust her so I avoided telling her why it was so important to fix the phone.“Feyre, this is my phone and it is broken. It contains my information so I want it fixed. The Lycan and I won’t be around for a while. Can I trust you to get it fixed?” I asked her.“Yes, of course. I know just the person who would do a good job.” Feyre replied grimly.“Good,” I said as I wrapped the phone in a cloth and pushed it into her hands.Feyre left a few moments before my maids arrived to escort me to the carriage wher

Chapter 26I stared at Arnou in silent trepidation. I have always hated secrets, something about being excluded from important information just didn’t sit well with me.“Arnou please tell me, what are you keeping from me?” I asked Arnou solemnly.“The pack we’re going to visit first is called the Wind Jasper pack and it’s alpha is my arch nemesis Duke.Duke and I have had an ongoing feud for as long as I can remember.” Arnou replied me with an expression that mirrored mine.No wonder Arnou had been troubled and distant since we started this trip.I wondered how strong this feud was though. I mean was it even safe to be going to their pack?Did we need more protection than a few guards could offer?“Exactly how deep does the feud between the two of you run?” I asked Arnou curiously.“Well Duke was my last standing opponent for the lycanthropy position. And he never quite got over his defeat so you get how serious his dislike of me is.” Arnou replied.Okay I was seriously getting worri

EPILOGUE Narrator’s POV The woman floated around the ballroom in the arms of her beloved and surrounded by her pack members. Her subjects for she was their sovereign and their High Luna. Her heartbeat thundered with that of her husband. He was happy, she could feel it. So why wasn’t she content? Why did a niggling feeling seem to burrow away at the back of her mind? “My love? Are you okay?” The lycan asked as he focused his attention on her. “Yes, Just. I need some air. Please walk with me,” Daciana requested as she dropped her arm from Arnou’s shoulder and held on to his arm. . “Of course,” Arnou replied. No questions asked. Together, they walked out of the ballroom, their absence causing slight worry in a red-haired girl and her friend. “Do you feel a bit better now?” Arnou asked her as they walked down the palace hallway hand in hand. “Hmm. It’s just, we haven’t had this much peace and happiness in so long. Am I crazy, if I feel like it’s not permanent?” A slight frown

She was supposed to have some time to name her babies and hold and say goodbyes and…and…I pushed a trembling Alisa from me blindly as I crawled toward the burning figure in the middle of the dungeon. She didn’t even scream!Loud roars of anger resounded throughout the room as the Lycan sped into the dungeon and went straight for his burning wife. How could she do this? She burned brightly, with the flames so hurt that they charred my skin as I crawled towards her.As I screamed, cried, and sobbed, I vaguely registered someone wrapping their arms around my waist to keep me from reaching her. They didn’t have much success with the Lycan as he ran headfirst into the fire like it was water and held onto his burning bride. As I cried, I realized where the air should have been fil

Chapter 223Narrator’s POVThe night was dark and the prison cell was cold yet the girl didn’t shiver or whimper. She stood with her arms chains and a resigned look on her face. The goddess knows this time she tried. She had looked on as everyone dropped to their knees and begged her. And even though she had dreamt, for months of the day they would all recognize that they wronged her, In that moment, all she felt was genuine worry that her best efforts wouldn’t be enough. It seems almost ironic, as she had been a proud, confidant general, Second only to the lycan and primed to be his high Luna. But living about those dreadful humans for months would do that to anyone. They would grate at you until all your confidence faded away. She knew the golden-haired woman wouldn’t die. She had taken measures against that a while ago but looking into the fearful faces of what had once been her family, Herley decided to scrape together what remains of confidence she had left and do her best. And i

What do we do now?” Alisa asked softly as she stood up and threaded her fingers with Maliyas. It gave me great joy to see that they had reconciled.“Nothing. We do nothing but wait fir it all to be over and I take this chance to say goodbye,” I replied her before Arnou could open his mouth to speak. He clenched his hands by his side in anger and I could feel the waves if his emotions and his hurt flooding through me.“But your children? Daciana reconsider this. Maybe there’s something we can do or-“ Danica said with a frown on her face.I walked up to her and

Chapter 221Daciana’s POVI gasped as Triss yelled and everyone in the room turned to stare at me.Maliya blinked confused but I could already sense the animosity pouring from her at Triss’s announcement as she listened and didn’t hear any heart beating in my chest.“EVERYONE OUT!” Arnou growled suddenly as he pointed at the door.He was afraid. That much I could feel, but he was also incredibly relieved and that brought me small peace. My legs shook as I pulled myself to a seating position and Triss snarled at Arnou angrily.“I left just for a few minutes. What did you do? Where’s Daciana? Why is that thing in her body? She demanded angrily as her eyes flitted to me for a quick second.Hurt racked my body as tears pricked the back of my eyes and I started to speak. To tell Triss something. Anything that would make her know, I wasn’t some strange enemy but Arnou beat me to it.“I SAID LEAVE!” He yelled angrily as the doors of my bedroom swung open and several palace guards rushed in.

Chapter 220Daciana’s POVIce flooded through my veins as I gave into the darkness. I was gone, drifting afloat in the darkness. Was this how Eva had felt? Was this how she had lived for months? Silenced and immune to the world.“Yes. Someone similar, except I was alone, but you’re not. I’m here with you, and together we’re stronger,” Eva’s soothing voice flooded my brain, and I smiled in ecstasy.Perhaps this place, this dark cocoon, was better after all.The sweet feeling of peace that lingered in my limbs, the love between my wolf and me We were made for this, just the two of us. No one else mattered.“Yes. We are,” I whispered back as a content smile flooded my lips. This place was perfect. Paradise.None of the suffering above could touch us here. Here we were happy and here we would remain-“NO!” The sharp scream of someone cut through my peace, and I blinked violently, disturbed. That wasn’t my wolf! Chapter 219Maliya’s PovI groaned weakly as I blinked open my eyelids.“What’s going on?” I croaked to no one in particular.“Here, have some water,” A voice said calmly from my bedside.I sat up slowly and stared at Alisa in shock. She had dark circles under her eyes and looked extremely tired but apart from that, I could almost not tell she had been battling a magic wielding, Vampiric child just hours ago.Wait! What time is it?The last time I had seen Alisa, she had been battling Star by herself while Prince Xavier faced off some other Vampire. The moment Verena died and told me to get Herley for the high Luna, I knew I had to leave before the Vampires finished off Alisa and Xavier and came for me too.I crawled to their horses that they had left unattended, and this one is surprisingly because I have no idea how I achieved such a feat but I dragged my naked and poisoned ass up one horse and held on as hard as I could while the horse raced away. The goddess surely had a hand in m

Chapter 218Arnou’s PovPower surged through me. Expanding as the warmth of the fire licked at my fingers greedily. For a moment, I feared I was drawing on Daciana’s power too much, and I retracted my hand.It was unmarred, and when I turned my head around to stare at my wife on the bed, she lay unmoving, like the power draw hadn’t affected her at all.I already knew she was powerful, but it just put into perspective just how powerful she is.More confident than the first time, I put my hand into the flame again as the familiar feeling of warmth licked at my fingers. The fire danced like it was alive, and it was relatively easy for me to pluck a piece, almost like breaking off a branch of a tree.I withdrew my hand from the fire, and with the little piece swimming in my palm like mercury, I poured it into the tube and stood to my feet.Everyone in the room, including Herley, watched in surprise. It was almost like she hadn’t expected me to be able to do it.“You stuck your hand into f
