Chapter 1

Chapter 1

LYRA.

My feet left the ground as my body was slammed against the rough bark of a towering pine tree. My fingers clawed at the hand wrapped tightly around my throat, my nails scraping against unyielding flesh. Air refused to enter my lungs, and my vision began to blur as dark spots danced at the edges.

"Pathetic whore," a voice sneered cruelly, and the fingers let loose my throat only at the moment when the blackness of unconsciousness seemed to come and swallow me. I slumped on the ground, like a rag doll, clasping my neck and gagging for breath.

Above me, the jeering laughs of my bullies were grating, and nasty to hear.

"Why do we even bother? She's not even worth the dirt under our boots," a tall, broad-shouldered boy sneered.

"She's just a burden," another joined in.

"You should've died in your mother's place," Anna's cold voice cut through the rest, silencing them all in an instant.

I lifted my teary gaze to meet the smirk of the auburn-haired beauty. Anna stood with her arms crossed, her emerald eyes glinting with malice. Everything about her screamed perfection, the queen of the Pale-moon Pack. Dominance and grace oozed from her, traits I could only dream of possessing.

Sharp, the words cut deeper than the bruises dotting my arms and legs, the scars on my body and my soul.

Anna crouched down, grabbing my chin roughly and forcing me to look up. "What are you even still doing here? Your mother should've taken you with her when she died. You're cursed, a walking plague. Everyone knows it."

My lips quivered, but I said nothing, pressing them together. Words would only incite further cruelty.

Anna snorted scornfully and rose to her feet. "Come on, let's leave the witch to wallow in her misery."

The others followed, spitting at me as they passed. I flinched but remained where I was, my body aching and trembling. When the sound of their footsteps faded, I allowed herself a moment to cry. My tears dampened the dirt beneath me, mingling with the blood seeping from a cut on my forehead.

My mind's eye was suddenly filled with my mother's face-soft, loving eyes and the warmth of her laughter echoing in that small cottage they once called home. I fisted my hands against the sharp ache of longing. My mother had been the best of them all-strong, kind, and loved by all.

Until that day.

The day the rogues attacked.

My hand instinctively patted around my neck and grasped the crescent moon hanging around my neck, its cool surface a small comfort to the storm inside me. I was six years old and had been hiding behind my mother as chaos erupted. My mother had protected her by giving herself, so that I may live. The Pale-moon Pack, however, saw my survival as a curse.

They called me cursed. They whispered that I had brought death to the pack, that my inability to shift into my wolf form further proved me a witch. Even as a child, I'd been cast out, and ostracized by the very people my mother had died protecting and cared for.

Wiping my face with trembling hands, I pushed myself up to my feet. The pain in my side screamed with every movement, but I had duties to finish. Omegas didn't get breaks, even after being beaten.

I limped back towards the packhouse, catching whispers and glances from the rest of the pack. Some turned their backs to me, others sneered openly. I kept her gaze down, focusing only on the tasks ahead of me that I had to do. It was the only way I survived the days.

By the time night descended, my body was leaden with exhaustion, my soul heavy with memories and accusations. My fingers were raw from scrubbing packhouse floors, my legs barely holding me up after hours of running errands for pack members who never even thanked or acknowledged me.

The square was active, filled with people, as I made my way back to the cramped omega quarters. The cold wind nibbled at my exposed skin, and I wrapped my arms around myself, limping through the empty space.

I was so caught up in my reverie that I didn't see the tall figure until I collided with them. The impact sent me stumbling backwards, and a strong hand shot out to steady me.

"Watch where you're going, you—" the deep, commanding voice cut off abruptly.

I looked up and froze. My wide eyes met the piercing amber ones of Alpha Derrick, the towering leader of the Pale-moon Pack, his dark hair fell down to his shoulders and his chiselled features were stern and imposing. An aura of sheer power and arrogance wafted off him, making me shrink back instinctively.

"Alpha, I—I'm sorry," I stammered, my eyes hitting the ground. My heart galloped in my chest as fear and exhaustion culminated into a potent elixir of panic.

Then I felt it.

A fire spread through my chest, a burning deep inside me that quickly seeped into the very edges of my skin. It was like an invisible thread was strung between us, thrumming with energy that prickled my skin.

What…?" Derrick's voice came softer now, laced with confusion.

I dared glance up again and was met with shock equal to my own. His hand still rested on my arm, and the telltale glow in his eyes was unmistakable in this proximity to his face-the unmistakable glow of a mate bond beginning. A smattering of gasps fluttered through the square forgetting there were others anywhere.

"She's his mate?" it whispered, and the tone spoke of disbelief.

"No. It can't be."

"She's an omega! And cursed!"

At the murmurs, my heart fell as shock changed to dread. I wanted to run, to hide from all the stares and the tension growing in the air. But I couldn't move, couldn't tear my gaze from Derrick's.

The Alpha seemed just as surprised, his brows furrowing as if in an attempt to make sense of what was happening. His grip on my arm tightened slightly as if to anchor himself before he snatched his hand from mine as if I burned him.

"This…" he began, his voice low. He glanced at me, his lips curling slightly. Disgust? "There's got to be some sort of mistake. There has to be."

And my fractured heart fell all the way to my feet and shattered into a million pieces.

Chapter 2
LYRA.I stood shaking in the centre of the packed square, surrounded by a sea of pack members, all eyes on me. The mate bond, that sacred, unbreakable connection, stirred weakly in my chest as if it knew what was coming. Across from me, Alpha Derrick Lashley stood tall, his piercing amber eyes cold and unforgiving. The weight of his authority and dominance was a suffocating reminder of the power that he held, not just over the pack but over my very heart."Say it," Anna's voice whispered venomously from behind Derrick as her perfectly manicured hand rested possessively upon his arm. She smirked, her green eyes gleaming with malice. My hands were shaking as Derrick's mouth opened, the words I feared like a death sentence falling from his lips. "I, Derrick Lashley, reject you, Lyra Morgant, as my mate. The bond shattered. The agony I had never known ripped through my chest, and I fell to my knees, clutching at my heart as if someone had driven a blade deep into her and twisted it mercil

Chapter 3
LYRA. It took several weeks before the torment finally let up. I knew Anna had grown more enraged with each passing day, the smug, cruel Luna-in-waiting having finally caught on to Alpha Derrick's twisted obsession with me. Scornful glances turned to outright hostility from Anna as her group of bullies became even more creative in their tortures to make my life a living hell.Yet, nothing terrified me more than Derrick himself. His shadow seemed to follow me everywhere. He lurked in corners, his eyes dark with something far more sinister than affection. I avoided him as best as I could, working tirelessly, keeping my head down, and taking the long way back to my quarters every night. But I could never avoid him forever. It happened one quiet afternoon in the kitchens. I was scrubbing pots, the heat from the stoves making my hair stick to my damp forehead. I barely registered his scent until it was too late."Lyra," Derrick's deep voice rumbled behind me, sending a chill down my spine

Chapter 4
The sharp sting of pain pulled Greg back into the waking world, his surroundings a blurred haze. His body screamed in agony as his chest heaved, fighting for breath. Blood seeped from his side, painting the forest floor beneath him. He blinked, trying to clear his vision, and that was when he caught the whiff of something alluring, some enticing, unfamiliar scent among the damp earth and his blood.A shadow moved above him. He blinked again, focusing on the figure leaning over him. It was a woman's pale face streaked with dirt and glistening tears, her long black hair tumbling in messy waves around her face, her lips quivering as if she was caught between fight and flight."Help me," he rasped, his voice broken and hoarse. She jerked, hesitating. Her wide, blue eyes darted around as though expecting someone to leap out of the shadows."Please," he tried again, his words sharper this time despite the strain it took to say them. She sniffled, wiping at her cheeks with trembling fingers.

Chapter 5
LYRA.My breathing was shallow, and my body quivered with the weight of my emotions. The stranger's touch was firm yet gentle as his fingers coaxed away the fear Derrick had etched into my soul. Every moment in this man's company felt like a life jacket, a reprieve from the torment I'd endured."Are you certain?" his voice low, almost reverent as he paused, his unsettling gold eyes searching mine."Yes," I whispered, my voice quaking but resolute. I needed this—to feel alive, to remind myself that I was more than the broken shell that Pale-moon Pack and Derrick had reduced me to.The man nodded, his expression softening. "I'll take care of you," he murmured. And for the first time in years, I believed someone other than my mother. I let go of my fears, of my inhibitions, and surrendered myself to him, feeling an unfamiliar sense of safety.---The morning came too soon.I stirred awake, the chill of the woods seeping into my bones. I blinked groggily, trying to piece together the nigh

Chapter 6
Derek was seated on his couch, going through a few pages of his documents when Anna walked in with a smile.“Well aren’t you as busy as a bee,” she laughed as Derek sighed.“What do you want?”“I’m just here to see you and how you’re doing.”“I’m not in the mood for your games Anna,” the alpha growled. “Tell me what you want or leave.”Anna stepped closer, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. “It’s about Lyra, the traitor you’ve locked in the dungeons.”The sound of Lyra’s name caused Derek’s jaw to tighten. “What about her? She’s a threat to us all and she’ll remain where she is.”He didn’t believe that but he didn’t care at this point. She had slept with the enemy and that meant that she was a traitor.“I do too, Alpha. She’s betrayed us all and doesn’t deserve our mercy. I don’t even know what she did but you’re right. She deserves to be locked up to never see the sun again. But don’t you think it’s about time someone took care of her? You’ve got too much on your pla

Chapter 7
Anna made her way through the dark, cold corridor of the dungeon. Her footsteps echoed off the wet stones and mingled with the musty smell of mildew. Two guards marched on either side of her, their faces hardened with duty as they led Anna to Lyra’s cell.Lyra was already sitting on the floor, leaning against a wall. Her eyes were down at first, but she raised them when she heard approaching steps and focused them steadily on Anna. Somehow, while imprisoned and awaiting interrogation from the elders of the pack, Lyra managed to make herself look like she wasn’t terrified even when her body showed a different story as she was shivering.Anna smirked, crossing her arms as she got to the cell and laughed.“Well, well, well, is that you my dear friend Lyra? I can’t believe this. Open it,” she ordered the guards. The larger of the two guards hesitated. “Are you sure, Miss Anna? She’s—”"Open it." Anna's voice was like a whip. "Do you think she's going to be any kind of threat to me? Look a

Chapter 8
Derek walked through the cold, dark corridor of the dungeon. His boots made loud clunks against the grey stone walls. The two guards at the entrance looked up from their slouched positions when they saw him enter. They both stood at attention and bowed at their alpha.“Open the cell,” he ordered, his voice calm but authoritative. The guards looked at each other nervously and then unlocked the iron door. Derek entered, his piercing blue eyes assessing the small room. Lyra was on the floor, her battered and bloodied form propped against the icy wall. When Lyra heard the door open, she looked up slowly, her face a mix of weariness and defiance. Derek smirked, arms crossed as he gazed at her. “Well, well,” he mocked. “What have we here? The great Lyra brought low.”Lyra knew this fight was over and she looked away from the man. She didn’t care about him or what he wanted to do anymore. She just wanted to be on her own. “Look at me,” he said but she didn’t flinch. “I said look at me!”Hi

Chapter 9
Lyra’s povTwo guards dragged me out of the cold, damp cell, their hands clamped so tightly on my arms that I winced. My legs threatened to give way underneath me, but they didn’t care; they simply pulled me through the darkness of the corridor, their boots thudding against the stone floor as I half-walked, half-stumbled in their wake.“Where are you taking me?” I asked, my voice cracking from exhaustion.“Shut up!” one of the guards snapped.I bit my lip to keep myself from asking anything else. My heart pounded in my chest and I felt fear claw itself through me. I didn’t know what it was that waited for me at the end of this hall but whatever it was, it couldn’t be good.At last, we stopped in front of a door and after one of the men unlocked it, they pushed me inside. I staggered and hit the hard wooden floor with enough force that pain shot up through my knees and settled as a throb at their cap. Looking around the room I found it empty except for one chair and a small table that

Chapter 10
Lyra’s povI was curled up on the floor. It was hard and cold. For that day I had been looking around my room to see if there was anything I could do to help my place get better but this was my first time being in this part of the packhouse.I had served but not from this part of the pack as this was where the lowly servants were kept and I had always pitied them. Now I was here, it hurt me but I couldn’t do anything. I started to think of that strange man I had met in the bushes at that time. I wondered who he was but I shrugged. He was the one who had put me through all of this pain.I waited throughout the day until night came as I looked around for anything I could cover up with.It suddenly got cold but I had my arms around as I curled up even tighter and tried to keep warm.My body started to pain me from all the beatings I had received earlier and I was too tired to do anything about it.Trying to sleep was a luxury that I couldn’t even afford as I was too tired. The cold floor
