Kayla's POV

With a heavy heart, I stood up, my hands trembling as I pushed the chair back. I didn’t understand what had happened. Why would he invite me and then not show up?

I knew it was too good to be true. Yet, as I walked back to my room, anger bubbled up inside me. I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask for the gifts or the invitation to a dinner that never happened. Why would he, out of the “blue” invite me for dinner? I rubbed my temples, feeling a migraine coming on.

He had set a date and then not showed up? He didn’t even have the decency to send a guard with a message. It felt like a cruel joke.

I stormed out of the dinner room, the more I thought about it, the angrier I became. I had been perfectly fine sitting in my room, keeping to myself, but now, thanks to him, I was a mess of emotions.

As I turned a corner, I saw him and I froze… There he was my knight in shining armor walking down the hall like nothing had happened.
