Chapter 13

Maxwell's father asked Amelia to wash his feet. He asked her to clean the entire house with a tooth brush and also sent all the maids home for a week.

Amelia cried and begged but work kept coming. It was like she never had the freedom she experienced before. That night of freedom was more of a punishment to her.

"When you're done, I want you to cut the grasses outside. Don't use the lawnmower, use your hands. I prefer them hand plucked."

He smacked her on the back as he passed by. His touch was more aggressive than a blow. She wished he had just used his mouth.

After she was done hand picking the grasses at his courtyard, Maxwell went on to give her more treacherous jobs to do. Each one, more tiring and stressful than the previous.

By noon, Amelia collapsed totally on top of her bed.

She had thought that was going to be the end when someone knocked on her door.

She pressed her eyes tightly, not moving an inch under her blanket, hoping whoever it was would get the memo and leave but he
