I hated the way he was leaning over her, forcing his scent into her face. I knew Jaxon was just doing it to prove that she was his, trying to make her want him. Yet Blue didn’t belong to either of us, not yet.
The news of her slowly poisoning herself was a shock to the system. I had never heard of a wolf doing that to themselves. Wolfsbane could do horrible things to a wolf, it never reacted the same way so you could never know what would happen to the wolf. Scars, burns, melting flesh, dissolving organs. I had seen a lot. Jaxon and I had also poisoned our fair share of wolves. But Blue, she was sitting here like she had never touched the stuff. I wondered if Jaxon was thinking the same as me.
“How did you know to give yourself the right amount?”
“Trial and error,” she mutters as my brother moves away from her.
“Wolfsbane is deadly.” I mutter, thinking about the last wolf we had given it too. Blood had poured from their nose, eyes and ears as they begged for the pain to stop.
“I want you to stop taking it.” Jaxon announces as he flattens down his creased shirt.
“Fuck you!” Blue snaps back. “It’s my body, I will do what I want with it.”
“You will stop taking it. Xander, go get the plant and burn it. Make sure there is nothing else in the house.”
“NO!” Blue squeals as her eyes flash at me.
“Now!” Jaxon demands
“We can’t. She will need to be weaned off of it. Her body relies on it the same way as heavy drug users.” I tell my brother. “We can’t force her to go without, not yet. All we can do is minimise how much she is consuming.”
The corners of Blue’s lips tug up a little in the corner and she nods her head a little in appreciation. My brother lets out a low rumble of annoyance
“Why the hell are you backing this ridiculous plan of hers?” He demands
“I’m not, but if she is going to be our mate. I would rather she was alive than dying because her body can’t cope with the withdrawals.”
I had no idea if it actually worked like that. But the girl didn’t want to shift, so I wouldn't force a shift on her. She leans her head back on the sofa, looking up to the ceiling. As she stretched, I could see the hint of a scar on her chest. The deep red line poked out the top of her shirt where the first button fastens over her cleavage. How many more scars were under her clothing?
Jaxon had sat back on the sofa. He was solely focussed on Blue but she keeps her eyes closed. Ignoring him as he fired question after question at her. He was asking her about her family, the school she went to. He even asked about the things she liked to do, but she refused to answer him, keeping her eyes closed the entire time.
“Answer me!” He finally snaps and she peers at him with one eye
“I don’t want to talk about them.”
“Your parents, they drove off a cliff?” I ask, remembering what the human had said.
“Bree shouldn’t have said that.” She is staring at me now, her pink lips parted a little. She was hard to read. I couldn’t tell if she was angry, annoyed or frustrated. Maybe a combination of all three.
"So it was a lie?"
She doesn't answer me.
“Why did they do that?”
She continues to stare at me so I try a different angle.
“Is that why Vita cares so much for you? As a Luna of the pack."
She still continues to stare. Her odd coloured eyes unblinking.
“How old were you?”
Her nostrils flared a little, as she grits her teeth together and mutters ‘twelve’. Maybe she thought I would stop asking if she gave me a little info.
“You have lived with Bree and her parents though?” Jaxon mutters. “You didn’t live in the pack.”
There is a flicker of fear in her eyes. I knew I had been right. I knew she was a Rogue. What she had said about belonging to Dark Crescent was a lie. Was Vita trying to get her in the pack to keep her from us or did she have another motive?
“Have you ever lived in a pack?” Jaxon asks, but his gaze had turned to me. He knew I had been right all along.
The front door opens and Bree stumbles in with her bags. Her face falls when she sees us and her eyes immediately search for Blue. She is relieved to see that Blue was still here and runs across the room to hug her.
A smile appears on Blue’s face, she genuinely cared for the human, just as the human cared for her. As much as I hated the idea, becoming friends with the human would be the way to Blue’s heart.
“We need answers.” Jaxon’s voice rumbles through my head.
“So now you want my help?” I snap back through the mindlink. He had been certain he knew the way to get Blue to come with us.
I watch as Blue and Bree talk to each other. I hear Bree ask her if she is alright and if we had done anything to her. Blue shakes her head and Bree squeezes into the ugly chair next to her, almost like she was trying to protect her.
“Vita didn’t come in with you?” I ask curiously.
“No.” She frowns at me
“Blue told us that Vita drops you home.”
“Oh,” She turns to Blue. “You’re not going to like this either. Vita is having a party night tomorrow.”
I watch the colour drain from Blue’s “No, I don’t work those nights. She must have got the date wrong.”
I was confused, what the hell was wrong with a party night. All wolves liked to party. They drank heavily and partied even harder.
“Wear the black shirt, I’m sure it will be fine.” Bree mutters as Jaxon cocks an eyebrow at me.
“Why would she want me there?”
“I don’t know. I reminded her that you were on shift. She just shrugged her shoulders.”
“Can someone tell me what this party night is and why you are so freaked out about it?” Jaxon’s voice rumbles through the room.
“The staff dress as sexy bunnies. Low cut crop tops that barely leaves anything to the imagination, black panties with a fluffy tail on them. Ears too.” Bree mutters, rolling her eyes. She turns back to Blue. “Wear a black shirt and shorts. You are behind the bar anyway.”
“It’s still showing my legs!”
I realised that every time we had seen her, she was in a long sleeved top and trousers or leggings. How bad could the scars be?
“I have some black tights you could wear?” Bree offers.
“Vita, why is she doing this? It’s not like her. She would schedule me off?”
“You don’t have to listen to her.” I mutter quietly.
“She’s my boss!” Blue is fighting back the tears and I watch Bree cup her face.
“I will always stand by you.” She kisses her on the cheek and wipes her tears. “I know you like Vita and you think she is helping you. But I keep telling you, you shouldn’t trust her.”
This Bree girl knew alot more than what I expected.
“You should listen to your friend.” I watch as Jaxon glares at me. “You shouldn’t trust a Luna when you’re a Rogue!”
BlueFuck! They did know!I feel Bree’s hand tighten around my arm. We have had this conversation multiple times. She knew that me being a Rogue wasn’t good.“Have you ever been in a pack?” Jaxon asks quietly. His blue eyes flickered between me and Xander. His eyes had a slight grey mist to mist to them. Xander’s too.“You don’t need to have a conversation in private.” I mutter. “You’ve figured it out. So reject me.”Jaxon presses his lips together. His nostrils flair just a little. Enough to show he was annoyed.“I am what I am!” I growl"You didn't answer my question. And don't spin some shit about Dark Crescent. I won't buy it."“How did you end up a Rogue?” Xander has his head tilted as he watches me “It wouldn’t have been killing the human, even if that is forbidden.”Jaxon scratches his chin and runs his hand through his neat blonde hair. He turns towards his brother “How the fuck were you right?” “I’ve already told you it doesn’t matter. But we have a choice to make now. Rejec
BlueI hated his touch. He thought he was doing the right thing by wrapping his arms around me, but I freeze, waiting for him to let go. He keeps telling me that I’m okay, but the longer he held me, the more I thought I would scream as the memory from that night comes flooding back.“Let go Jaxon.” I just about hear Xander over the throbbing beat of my heart.“She’s panicking. She’s holding her breath.”“She doesn’t like being touched.”“I’ve got her joggers.” Bree comes towards me. Her eyes rise upwards. “Let her go. She’s going to pass out else.”Jaxon’s arms release me and I stumble forward, righting myself.“Put these on and sit.”She hands me my black joggers and pulls a chair out for me as I try to calm my breathing. What the hell had happened?Bree and Jaxon watch me in silence. Xander had Vita pinned to a chair. “Thanks.” I mutter as I feel the jacket around me.“Are you okay now?” Those blue eyes stare into mine, searching for some kind of answer.“Why Vita? Why did you do th
XanderIf Blue had said no. We wouldn’t have left anyway. Jaxon had already said that he would find a way for us to stay with her for a few days. It was why we already had spare clothes and things in the car. Vita just gave us the perfect reason.Blue helps the human lock up as Jaxon and I wait out front. “Is there ever a time you don’t get your way?” I mutter sarcastically as I lean against the wall.“Fate, brother. You have to admit that if it wasn’t for Vita, we would be spending time fighting to make her our mate. At least now, she has agreed to this deal.”“Look, don’t get me wrong. I am curious about her, but at the end of the day, she is still a Rogue and we can’t change that.”He cocks an eyebrow at me “Why can’t we?”“Rogues are Rogues for a reason, Jaxon. You know that as well as I do.”“What if the reason she is a Rogue isn’t because of something she did?” He challenges me.“What?”“Her parents. Both of them would have been wolves, right?”“Well yeah, but what’s that got t
JaxonRunning into the hallway, I find Bree sat back against the wall crying. Xander was trying to hold Blue’s shaking body still as he muttered under his breath.“What’s happening to her?” But it’s only as I move closer that I see the foam in her mouth. “Wolfsbane.”I have seen this time and time again. It’s what eventually happened when a wolf had been dosed with two much of the poison.“What do we do?” Xander shouts at me. His blue eyes wide in fear“I don’t know.”“Do something!” Bree cries“There is no reversal for this. How did she take so much?” We had been with her the entire time.“The water, it’s in the filtered water.” She cries at meRunning to the kitchen, I grab the near empty jug from the side and take it back to Bree as Blue continues to convulse.“How full was it?” Her eyes are wide as she stares at the jug. “Bree, how full was it?”“Full” she muttersBlue had drank nearly two litres of the water/wolfsbane mix“Xander. There’s nothing we can do.”“We have to do some
Xander“Are you certain? Midnight?” I ask Bree again“Yes, but it’s…”“It’s what?” “She doesn’t like talking about it. The other kids in school used to bully her over it. Making stupid comments about her being a vampire or if she howled at the moon.”“I assume they didn’t know what she is?” Jaxon mutters.“No, only me. But that was way before she could shift anyway.” Bree drops her eyes to Blue. “She will hate me for telling you this.”“Not at all.” I tell her, but she didn’t believe me and I didn’t blame her.“Ava Midnight.” My brother’s voice is low as he stands over her. “How many other siblings does she have?”“Just Antony.” Bree replies.“Male Alpha children are born as twins and triplets.” He glances to Bree“I swear, I’m not lying about this. It’s just Antony.”“And you are certain you don’t know where he is?” He challenges her.“I haven’t seen him. I only know that Blue talks to him now and again. He does not approve of Blue working in the club.” She sighs, “I will tell you
Blue“Huh?” The word came out in a croak. My throat felt like fire, my lungs were tight as I tried to breathe, but did he just call me Ava?“That’s your name, right? Ava Midnight?”I just stare at him, confused as he came into focus. Xander with his chaotic mess of blonde hair leans over me.“Xander?” I splutter his name out, trying to make sense of everything. “Am I dead?” I mutter again. I had to be, I had consumed enough wolfsbane to kill any wolf.I hear a snort from the otherside of the room and Xander flips his head in the direction of the noise, frowning. He smiles at me “No, nearly died, but thankfully, you have been poisoning yourself for that long, your body has been able to fight it.”“I think her head is a bit messed up.” Jaxon appears in front of me. “She’s asked you the same questions three times now.I blink a few more times, trying to gather my thoughts. “Bree?”“See.” Jaxon murmurs. “Ava, we need answers.”“Not now!” Xander snaps at him. “Give her a break, she's been
JaxonBlue was starting to drive me nuts. I could barely think straight when I was around her. Every word, every refusal, her denial, it was all grinding on my last nerve and yet I knew that I needed her. I wanted her. I was desperate to have her.Sitting in the car for a little while, my phone starts ringing.“Cece?” I mutter into the phone as I pick it up. She was the only one who rang me. She was always paranoid that someone would be listening in to our private mind link conversations. I hadn’t had the heart to tell her that the phone would be much worse.“Jaxon, where are you?” “I told you, we are tracking our mate.”“You’ve found her haven’t you! It’s why you and Xander have hardly been home.”“Yes. We found her.”“Well, what is she like? Are you going to accept this one? When are we going to meet her?”“You can’t say anything to father.”The line goes quiet. “She’s not a Lycan is she?”My pause confirms her suspicions. “Please tell me that you are not mated to a human.”“Not a
Blue“Is that some kind of threat?”“He made me get rid of all the wolfsbane” Bree whispers and I glance to Xander looking for confirmation. He nods his head.“We will help you during the next full moon,” He gives me a small smile. He didn’t believe that he could, after all, Lycans can shift when they want. They weren't forced too like I was.I pull the cord of my hoodie tight around my face and tucked my legs up under me. It had been years since I had shifted. “You don’t need to be afraid of your wolf.” Jaxon mutters quietly. I never knew where I stood with him. If anything, it was like talking to a bipolar Lycan. One minute he was threatening me and the next he was trying to be kind. At least Xander wasn’t like that. With Xander, you got what you saw.“It's not my wolf that I am afraid of.”“I can’t change what happened in the past, but we can teach you to protect yourself.” Xander stares at me with those amazing blue orbs.“The week isn’t up yet.” I was still determined to hold my
