Freya gave me a bittersweet smile. She still looked beautiful with it. Everything about her was beautiful. Why won’t the male population be drawn to her? I held back myself from saying what would put me into trouble. I have to continue the pretense that I heard nothing of her conversation with Viktor. She was at an advantage with me because of her height, so I have to step back a little bit from her to look her in the face.
“You knew you never belonged here, Layla. Your respectful place is in the ditch, on the street,” Freya said with a shake of her head. “How can you be so dense as to think otherwise?”
I had to stay focused here. Not shedding tears is a show of me being strong. “I thought you were my friend.”
“Friend?” She laughed as if it was funny, and I must be out of my mind. Well, she is close to the truth with that. I am out of my reasonable mind. How could she be friends with me, a nobody? “Grow up, Layla, and you are interrupting us. Off you go now, for I don’t feel like putting up with you right now.”
I knew a free pass when I saw one. She was letting me go instead of punishing me for the interruption. Before I could say a word, she closed the door in my face. I breathed out and walked away. I have to think of my next action now. What am I going to do with the information I just heard?
I hurried down the hallway, back to my duty. Maybe something will come to me during the time I will spend working.
I finished my work and went ahead to return the laundry. After that, I went back to my room and went to stand by the window. There was nothing to see there, but I was lost in thought. Tomorrow, I have to do something, talk to Jarod. He has to know what Freya and Viktor were planning behind his back. They wanted to overrule him. I had to warn him, but that will be tomorrow. I just can’t stand to look at him today.
The following day, after finishing my morning duties, I made my way to the throne room, knowing that would be the place I’d find Jarod. The guards at the door tried to stop me, but they were too late. I was so determined not to get caught, but it turned out to be a big mistake. I looked around the full throne room, I had no idea Jarod was in a meeting, and here I was disrespecting the sacred meeting. For one thing, the way I threw the door open was rude. I was not presentable enough to appear in front of this gathering. I fell to my knees, face down, and awaited to be spoken to before I spoke. This was a terrible mistake on my part. I was already trembling where I was as I waited for someone to speak.
JAROD'S POV
“Why are you here?” someone finally asked her.
“She should be beheaded,” someone else shouted. “How dare she?”
“Let’s hear why she decided to interrupt this meeting,” the first voice said patiently.
“She has nothing good to say, she knew never to come here,” one of my men who was clearly annoyed said.
“Jarod?” a voice I was familiar with said. Clyde, my second in command, asked me. I closed my eyes briefly.
I stood up and walked to her where she was. I bent down to her level. “Look at me,” I said, my voice controlled, but I knew that past my controlled voice, I was furious. Without being told twice, she raised her face to meet mine.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“I… I’m sorry, I had no idea the meeting was on,” she apologized, so weak was she.
“There are two guards out there that could have told you what is going on here,” I said, leaning closer to her.
“I’m sorry,” her voice broke at the last word. I hated such weakness.
“Why are you here?” I asked her again, to get straight to the point.
“I had something to tell you,” she said. Maybe sticking with the truth will help her this time around, since she was already in trouble. Saying the truth shouldn’t hurt that much, but I knew otherwise.
“And what would that be that you couldn’t wait until I summoned you?” I asked, getting to my feet. I turned to face the room. “The bitch has something to say,” I announced to them all. Some snorted, laughed, and got more interested in her. This was going the way I planned.
I looked around the room. Some were glaring at her, some interested in her looks and what lay within her dress. I smirked. I was the only one who knew what she has under that dress, while some looked bored, and I finally met Clyde who looked tense and a worried expression crossed his face. Why would he be worried about the bitch?
“Go ahead then, and let’s hear what you have to say, bitch,” someone said.
I turned to look down at her. I signaled for her to speak, and I was clearly having fun with all this, though my eyes blazed red. “Speak up.”
She swallowed hard. “I… you…” Trailing off, she stopped.
“Having trouble speaking now?” I asked, my lips twitching, which was not a good sign for her, and she knew this.
“I’m sorry, but… Freya and Viktor are planning to overrule you, to kill you,” she rushed out. And I thought what would come next was anger, shouts, and denial, but what met her outburst was silence. Pin-drop silence. I looked around the room, and all eyes were on me. Clyde looked speechless. She looked up at me, waiting. What the hell?
I was still caught up in her words that I did not notice the person walking up to us, but the hard kick to her face threw her sideways, and I saw who it was: Viktor. I got a little pleasure from that.
“How dare you?” Viktor growled at her.
She hugged herself tightly to shield her face from his kicks.
“Stop it!” shouted Clyde, joining us. Viktor had to obey his command, so he backed away. “What are you talking about, Layla?” he asked her, always so calm.
“I… heard, them… they… Freya would kill Jarod… when they are together… I swear it, I heard them talking,” she pleaded for us to believe her. It seems like her life was hanging on this now, and I’ll be damned if it is not.
“Lies, how dare you try to lie about something like this?” Viktor yelled and would have done her more harm, but Clyde held him back.
“Alpha,” Clyde called again, for me to at least say something. “This is a serious issue.”
“Why? Don’t tell me you believe her,” I finally said, my voice has gone darker as I turned my glare on Clyde.
“What if she is right?” Clyde asked.
“You can’t be serious right now. I won’t stay back and watch this brat lie against me, and you backing her up,” Viktor said to Clyde.
I turned to fully face Layla. “Are you planning on turning my men against me? Is that what you want because I rejected you? Isn’t that cheap of you?” I asked her. “We will continue this meeting later,” I said to the room at large, bent down, grabbing her hair. It is time for her to be punished. First for coming and disturbing this peaceful meeting. I dragged her to one of my men. This should be fun. “She needs to be punished,” I told my men.
“Alpha!” Clyde said.
“Whatever punishment?” my head of war asked.
“Yes,” I answered him. The men laughed, clearly liking the idea.
“You can’t expect everyone to punish her, for what?” Clyde asked me, not pleased with the idea. But he does not like most of my ideas when it comes to the bitch.
“She just disrespected all of us,” I said, going to have my seat. “Pass her around when you are done with her.”
LAYLA’S POV
I cried, begged, and bled as I was passed around to be punished. My whole body ached from being kicked, the blows, the punches, the smacking, the spanking. My body felt weak, and I could see a lot of cuts on my body. My dress was almost falling from my shoulders as it was torn in a lot of places.
Only if I was not born to live such a life, how easy my life would have been. I wouldn't be here. I was now past being humiliated; my pride was totally bruised. I was like an object that anyone could use and toss aside, stepped on and thrown into a trash can. There was nothing to my life again, nothing at all. Why can't I have a normal day? Why can't I just end my life successfully? As I was passed around in the room, I stopped feeling anything. It was my body; my mind shut down. I could feel the tears that ran down my face. I would obey anyone's command automatically, but it was not really me.
I was not seeing anything. Nothing made sense again, and it was like I was in a blank room. The only thing Jarod did not permit his men was to have sex with me, telling them that should be preserved for him alone. My dress was almost pulled down to my waist, but doing as they pleased with my powerless and fragile body bruised my heart. How I was still standing was a misery to me.
Finally, I got to Jarod, and with his touch, I came back to the present and stared at him with tears stained eyes, not believing he could be such a beast. Has he no feelings? He smirked down at me and pulled me into his lap. His head went down to my chest; he took one of my nipples into his hot mouth, bit hard, and sucked. I cried out in pain and tried to push him away. I could hear his men cheering him on. The only people who refused to touch me were Clyde and Viktor, and I could not even meet Clyde's gaze; he looked so mad, his fisted hands at his side.
Jarod gave me a slap across the face for trying to push him away. His men laughed. He pushed me down on the floor, lifted my dress up, and had his way with me. I just couldn't stand it again; I was losing consciousness, and the last thing I felt was Jarod pulling away from me.
"She is almost passing out, Alpha," Clyde said.
Jarod stood up, adjusting his clothes. "Serves her right for coming up with her lies," he faced his men. "We should never let our guard down; this bitch is looking for any opportunity to feast on our weakness," he addressed the room. "Now, let's see what to do with you, bitch."
"What do you mean? You are still planning on punishing her?" Clyde asked, confused.
"Yes."
"Look at the state of her, what else do you want? She is out of it already."
"I am not satisfied yet," Jarod said.
I tried to gather my dress back in place to hide me from the still prying eyes. I avoided looking up at Clyde, but Jarod bent down and grabbed my hair. He started pulling me out of the room.
"You should have known your place. You deserved all that you got today, and there is much more to come till you learn your lesson. You will be punished," Jarod told me.
"Please," my voice sounded strange even to me. I begged as he continued to drag me away from the throne room in total humiliation.
My scalp was in so much pain, my heart pounding inside my tight chest. I struggled to be free, but it was impossible and increased the pain on my scalp. I cried and begged Jarod to let me go, but it fell on deaf ears.If I thought he would stop when we got to the stairs, I was kidding myself. He did not stop, nor did he slow down. Down the stairs I went, my whole body started hurting with the pain of being dragged down the stairs."Jarod!" Clyde called, following us. He caught up with us before Jarod could drag me all the way down to the dungeon. He held the hands holding my hair. "Stop for a minute and think about this, Jarod. She might be right," Clyde said."I knew you believed her when you have also gotten to taste what she has to offer," Jarod snapped at Clyde."What do you mean?" Clyde asked, his anger at the surface."Tell me, you two are not having sex behind my back!" Jarod said."That is cheap. I would never touch your woman," Clyde said bitterly."She is not my woman!"Ignor
ANNABELLE'S POVI was taking my daily walk on the beach at the back of the pack house. I loved how the waves clashed with the sky, almost making them one. I often swam in the river beside it every night. My life was close to being perfect, with the only missing piece being my love life. If only I were a hundred percent sure that the one I loved felt the same way about me. Nevertheless, I was content with the way things were. He cared deeply for me.Growing up with my first love, I had received a lot of love from my parents before the attack that took most of the elders in the pack, including the then-king. Weeks after the attack, the queen passed away and was buried beside the king in the royal cemetery.Since then, the new king had been incredibly concerned about my welfare. I smiled as I tied up my hair in a tight bun on top of my head. Instead of a gown, I wore my training attire. It was easy to move around in, and there was no point in wearing a beautiful dress when there was no
It’s been four days since I successfully took care of the strange girl with no one's awareness, not even Lisa. I must admit that the girl was looking good; her wounds were healing at a fair pace, which was abnormal for a werewolf. She was still kept awake at night with screams, which I believe should have given me away.A few guards knocked at my door to ask if I was okay. I had to lie, telling them I had a terrible nightmare. I kept feeding her healing porridge and herbs every morning and night, cleaning her body, and checking her up so she wouldn’t catch a fever.I was a little nervous because the Lycan king was coming back in just two days, and I was yet to think of what to say and how to present her case to him.I left my room, locking the door in case anyone decided to check up on me. I informed Lisa that I was going for a walk on the beach. I smirked at the thought of how bad I've become in the past few days. I know I could be selfish at times, but this is probably the first tim
The following morning, a knock woke Annabelle up from her deep slumber. She stumbled to her door and opened it. Lisa stood behind the door, and before Annabelle’s mind could register why she should block the door, Lisa pushed her way inside the room and stopped, taking in the entire room. Her eyes zeroed in on the girl on the floor who was still fast asleep.“What is that?” Lisa asked.Annabelle cursed and moved back as Lisa turned to her. “You shouldn’t have seen that.”“Is this what you have been hiding for days?” Lisa asked. “I should have suspected this.”Annabelle wondered what the time was and how Lisa caught her at it. “It is not what you're thinking.”“And how will you know what I am thinking about?” Lisa asked with a raised eyebrow at Annabelle, who looked flustered.“I… well, Lisa,” Annabelle said frustrated. “You won’t say anything to a single soul.”“Give me a reason why I should hold my sealed mouth.”“Please.”“Who is she?” Lisa asked, turning back to look at the lady sl
Layla and I made our way out of the chamber and walked down the corridor to the left. People stared at Layla as we passed, so she moved closer to me, but she still stood out with her pale skin and dark black hair. I knew it was better to present the case to the king immediately when he arrived rather than keep it until later.I saw one of the king's personal guards relieved of his duty for the day as he made a beeline for the kitchen. He stopped when he saw us and bowed.“Hello, Lady Annabelle,” he greeted.“Vernon, welcome back,” I replied.“Thank you, Lady Annabelle,” raising his head, he noticed Layla but said nothing.“Is the king free?”“Yes.”“Thank you,” and I turned to the door, knocked, and entered the room. It was an ancient office; everything about the office was old but still looking good. One side of the office was filled with books, and the other side had armor. Walking deeper into the room, we heard voices at the far end of the office, where there was a big table and a
LAYLA'S POVAnnabelle and I spent the day together in my new room, and after that, we both went to the kitchen where Lisa served us dinner. Lisa informed me that I could start my work in the kitchen the next day, and I had no problem with waking up early since I was an early bird. With a big smile on my face, I retired to my room for the night, making sure to bolt my door before climbing into my bed. I fell asleep immediately, my head sinking into the feather-like pillow. I was amazed at how relaxed I felt in the pack and hoped the next day would be great and interesting.A week had passed since I became one of the pack members, and I had yet to encounter the king. I wondered if he was even in the pack, but Annabelle made it clear that she saw him every day and even spoke to him.I was sitting across from Annabelle in her room. She was busy scribbling something on an empty parchment, her attention so intense that I felt like I would melt if I were that parchment.“Annabelle?” I spoke
Layla found herself in a state of contentment within her new pack. She diligently attended to her duties, enjoyed the company of Annabelle and Lisa, and found her nightmares becoming less frequent. She couldn't help but feel grateful for the positive change in her life. Since the incident at the beach, where Annabelle couldn't stop talking about the Alpha, Layla saw little of his attention. She had managed to develop a good rapport with the pack members, and they accepted her without much question. However, not everyone in the pack shared in Layla's happiness, especially a close friend of Annabelle named Elena, who had returned from her mission representing the pack. Elena was a formidable warrior, and her mere presence intimidated Layla. Her large stature and perpetually stern expression made Layla anxious, so she made a point to avoid Elena whenever possible.Layla looked up from across Annabelle in the sunroom as Elena joined them. Elena shot a glare at Layla before sitting down bes
Alpha Demetrius waited for Layla to put on her sandals, and they made their way out of the coven and walked down the beach. They didn't notice the person approaching, and it was too late for Layla to do anything else.“Layla,” Elena called as she stopped in front of them. She had a killer look on her face and focused her gaze on Layla.“Elena,” Demetrius called, surprised to see her there. Elena bowed to him, but her attention remained on Layla. He then left the two of them alone, understanding that they must have something to say to each other. Elena was thankful for the space, but Layla was far from thankful. She wished the Alpha had never left, leaving her to face Elena. She knew Elena's intentions were to talk down on her. What would she think now? Seeing her with the Alpha must have bothered her. Would that mean more hatred from her?“Being clingy with the Alpha now?” Elena asked, her voice deadly cold.“No,” Layla said quickly. How was she going to explain to Elena, and would sh
Demetrius was in his room, going over the report Lucas brought to him about the operation of other packs when he heard a knock on the door. Knowing it was his kids, he stood up and went to the door, opening it a little to talk to the boys. However, the sneaky children made their way into the room, rushing to his chair and bed.“Mama?” Laish was the first to notice Layla before Demetrius could cover her up. The other two ran to him and helped each other up, joy in their eyes as they recognized their mama. Shamir turned to Demetrius, asking for confirmation.Demetrius nodded, “Yes, Mama.”“Mama is sleeping,” Laish said.“Mama, wake up,” Shamir said, touching her cheeks.“Kids, don’t wake Mama, let her sleep,” Demetrius told them as he carried Tristan down from the bed and then Laish. When Shamir saw he was next, he started crying, holding Layla's clothes.“Come on, Shamir, don’t wake Mama with your cries,” Demetrius said, trying to peel his hands off Layla’s clothes. Layla groaned and op
Annabelle used magic to throw Demetrius across the room; his head hit the wall, and the power holding him mid-air released him. He fell on the table, breaking it in two. The shock wore off from Demetrius immediately; he knew Annabelle was not planning on going easy on him. So, he charged at her, but she used her powers to immobilize him, rendering him unable to move.Demetrius focused on his inner strength; it had never been said in history that a Lycan king or queen was defeated by a mere witch, and it would not start with him. He felt his toes move, unbeknownst to Annabelle."Do you think you can defeat me?" Annabelle asked, not paying attention to his legs. She started pacing. "You can’t handle me. I am stronger than you think.""But it is killing you," Demetrius said, determined to keep her talking until he was sure he could move his whole body."What do you know?" she snapped. "You know nothing about me. I am not the Annabelle you used to know," she told him."Of course, I know t
Jarod and Annabelle heard the growls from afar and knew that battle was upon them. Annabelle went outside and directed her men on what to do. Jarod pulled her aside as the men got ready, some shifting while others remained in their wolf form, armed with weapons mixed with wolfsbane, weakening the enemy easily.“You should stay with Layla,” Jarod told her.“But she is dead,” Annabelle said.“We are not sure of that, hell, you are not even sure. Four men will watch you, in case you want to change your mind about killing her again,” Jarod said. Annabelle sneered at him, but he waved her away. “We need you to be safe.”“I want to fight!” Annabelle said stubbornly.“No, you are our secret weapon; you should stay safe first,” Jarod told her. “Watch her,” he told four men who escorted Annabelle back to the house.Jarod changed into his wolf to blend in with the men. He knew his strong scent could give him away, but he aimed to take down many enemy warriors. The wolves from the woods charged
★JAROD'S POV★It was fortunate that I overheard Annabelle's and Layla's conversation. She was falling into Layla’s influence again, just like three years ago when our entire plan went downhill. I quickly made my way over to them.“What are you doing?” I demanded, and Annabelle jerked like she was in a trance while Layla gave me an angry look, as if I had burst her favorite bubble. That's exactly what I did, I thought to myself.“Are you letting her sway you with rubbish words again?” I asked Annabelle.Annabelle looked annoyed. “I am not.”“But you looked smitten just now. Why is that?” I questioned her.“It is none of your business,” Annabelle retorted. It was a waste of time to argue with Annabelle once she had denied everything, so I turned to Layla. “Don’t try to sweet talk yourself out of this. We are ending this once and for all,” I told her. To Annabelle, I said, “We need to send the message now.”Annabelle nodded. “But the potion is not ready now.”“No more delays. Are you try
DEMETRIUS' POVAfter leaving my office, I went to the nursery where the kids were playing under the watchful eyes of Elena. She looked so tensed up, and I knew that the other ladies must have set her up to babysit the boys. And the three of them together are capital trouble. When the boys saw me, they ran towards me with super speed; their growth was so fast that they were comfortable on their own feet."Papa," they shouted as they got to me and surrounded me. Elena stood up right and bowed to me. "I will watch them for some time," I told Elena."Yes, Alpha," she said, sounding relieved. She bowed and left the room. "Play with us," Tristan demanded."Carry me," Shamir said, lifting his hands up to me. I knew if I carried one of them, all of them would want to be carried, so I dodged that request. I walked over to their playing mat and sat down; immediately, Shamir placed himself on my laps, occupying his space and claiming ownership. It would be trouble if any other person wants to si
★ANNABELLE’S POV★I was in so much pain; my whole body was burning. I knew I was cursed with the witch power running through my veins. The fact that Layla escaped my camp, a place I thought no one could penetrate, was a big shame to me. It made me more furious at everything I had built. I should be untouchable by now, but a weak girl, three children, and a weak male still escaped and went free. I wished Layla was conscious when they brought her back; she might be dead by now. I busied myself in preparing my weapon. If she doesn't want to die easily, then I will give her options to choose for herself. Then she won’t be able to escape death again.I picked up the potion bottle; it was a death poison. Instead of wasting energy to kill her, seeing how she had not turned up dead, escaped from Jarod, didn’t die when I stabbed her, I had to release her when I captured her, and Jarod tried to kidnap her but failed miserably, and now she is in my hands again. I am so done with her shit. I sh
Nancy gave the boys a bath, fed them, and watched them play in the garden. The children had asked her for their mama; she told them their mama was out, as the Alpha had instructed them to say if the kids asked for their mama. Nancy wished she had her own child. She was the one who told her mate that they should wait. She wanted to enjoy their time alone, but then the Luna came into the picture, and her mate had to attend to the Luna's needs, and everything happened so fast. Maybe now was the right time to have her own child, but the Luna's situation was a concern. Their Alpha did not believe his mate was dead, but Foster said she was dead.Foster was still asleep; he must be regaining his strength while on bed rest. Elena joined Nancy in the garden, and they sat together.“How are they doing?” Elena asked.“Well, they are fine. They have been constantly asking for the Luna,” Nancy said.“What do you think?”“What do you mean?”“Do you think the Luna is dead?” Elena asked. “I don’t wa
Demetrius was summoned to the north border. He hurried over to the place, running in his wolf form, which was faster than in his human form. He had to persuade his wolf, who had been angry with him for days since Layla left on her own to save their kids.He could vividly remember his last conversation with Demon echoing in his head.“You are a fool for staying here when it is likely our mate has been attacked.”“She does not want our help.”“Your help, you mean?” Demon retorted hotly. “We are one person, are we not?”“You should have gone after her no matter what. But what did you do? Stayed back, and for two days now, she has been out of reach. You are so comfortable with yourself.”“I have a pack to worry about.”“So, Foster or your kids are not part of your pack? Or talk about your mate. You don’t need her?” Demon asked him.“Of course, I need her. She is the one that does not need me!”“You sent her kids away from her; she hates you for that. And you won’t even allow her to visit
When Layla saw that everything was quiet, she went over to the barred gate and started working on the lock. She moved quickly because, from that moment, their cover could easily be blown. She heard the click sound, signaling that she had successfully unlocked the gate."It's open," Layla told Foster. She listened for any sounds, hearing none, she opened the door and motioned for Foster to follow her. They both stepped out of the cell and made their way cautiously, not moving too fast as they were still weak. Out in the open, they hid from the guards patrolling outside. When no one was looking, they changed their position and concealed themselves among the bushes."Can you tell where exactly they are?" Layla asked Foster, knowing it would be easier for him to pick up the kids' scent.Foster sniffed the air, attempting to pick out the kids' scent, but it was challenging, mixed with that of the rogues. "Let’s move away from here and try again.""We need to hurry up; they will soon notice
