Hazel was happy that the celebration was still going to be held tomorrow. It afforded her time to do what she had gone there to do.
Her ears were still pinned to the door when she heard footsteps approaching from within the room.
Caught unawares and not knowing where to run to or hide without being caught, she instinctively jumped to the back of the door.
It was a careless hiding spot that would guarantee her getting caught but it was all she could come up with.
She could not risk running away because the hallway was too long and the next exit was at the end so she would definitely have been caught and her only other option was a window which was a couple of meters high up.
The approaching footsteps reached the door and opened it.
Since the door was flung open, Hazel was out of sight as she was on the other side of the opened door.
It was at that moment that it occurred to Hazel that the door could be closed shut and she would be caught.
She had not had enough time to even think of something like that and now, she was considering making the deathly fall through the window.
Hazel's heartbeat got fast as the person, instead of moving forward, paused outside the door. Luckily for her though, the door was not closed shut so she was still hidden.
Gordon had been tired of being bugged by his council members. He had better things to do than sit with men who listened —and went even as far as believing silly rumors.
He had decided to go do something better —probably taking a nap and was at the door when he had to stop.
As he stopped, his nose picked up the sweet scent of a human. He could have sworn that there was a human nearby.
His ears also pricked up the sound of a heart beating. The heartbeat sounded so loud and so fast.
Gordon looked around. It was not possible that there could be anyone else there aside from him and the men in the room behind him.
He stood still trying to make sense of what was happening.
Or could it be that the rumors his councilmen had told him about the curse had actually gotten to him?
Hazel's heartbeat continued to surge as the person at the other end of the door continued to remain plastered there.
The sound of her beating heart was so loud that it even filled her ears.
That was it! She thought to herself.
If she, who was a human could be hearing the sound of her heartbeat this loud then it would definitely sound like a boombox to a wolf.
The wolf at the other side of the door must have heard the sound of her heartbeat.
Without a moment's delay, she took in a deep breath, closed her eyes, and then held her breath.
With her eyes closed, she focused on nothing else but the darkness she could see in her eyes and tried to calm her beating heart.
She knew that when she finally opened her eyes it could go either two ways.
She would either be staring at a statue of a wolf that was placed opposite her or into the eyes of a real wolf.
Her technique worked as her heartbeat slowly calmed down.
Gordon stood there for a while as his ears continued to pick up the sound of a beating heart then suddenly, the sound which had sounded like a blaring siren suddenly went down.
No longer could he hear it blaring; all he could pick up was the sound of a regular beating heart which could belong to any one of the men in his council.
Still, his nose picked up the smell of a human but he discarded it as his mind played tricks on him.
Immediately, he got angry with himself. How could he, the first prince of the House of Midnight be scared of a useless rumor?
It made him feel weak like he was some type of prey. How ironic!
He was the hunter and not the prey. Everyone who valued their heads on their necks knew this.
He was the one whose name sent terrors down the spine of people and not the other way around.
He needed time to clear his head. There was no way he was going to be a scared little wimp.
Angry at himself, Gordon stomped away.
Hazel held her chest in her hands as she exhaled in relief. She waited for a few more minutes, making sure that Gordon had walked away before deciding to move.
The other members of the council were still deliberating and when she realized that nothing they were saying was of value to her, she walked away.
She took long deliberate strides as she walked by the door which had been left open by Gordon.
Hazel walked out of the palace and into the grounds.
She found a beautiful garden that had a gazebo in it.
She was so enchanted by the gazebo as it had vines wrapped around it.
The vines were green and they had little soft pink flowers blooming on them.
The gazebo reminded her of Cinderella's enchanted carriage which her fairy godmother had made from a pumpkin. Almost like a better version of her story.
She was stuck here in a human body because Raglan thought the only way to help her would be to turn her into an assassin.
She walked into the gazebo and reclined on a sofa that was there.
She closed her eyes as she thought.
She did not have a plan on how she was going to carry out her next assassination.
She however knew she had an opportunity to do it and that was the moon festival.
Frustrated, her mind drifted off to other thoughts as the cool breeze blowing into the gazebo drifted her off to sleep.
She daydreamed of her life before Maeve cheated her; before her mate stabbed her in the heart.
How she loved and was loved...
The time when she knew she was not alone unlike now.
The time when her only problem was making sure Maeve had not landed herself in any trouble.
"Maeve," she thought.
The person she had shared a womb with for nine months. The one who turned into her living nightmare.
Her heart constricted as she thought of the numerous times Maeve had hurt her.
When Maeve had set her favorite doll on fire.
When Maeve strangled her little puppy which she had rescued just because her parents would not let her keep a cat.
The time Maeve had tried to kill her in her sleep by strangling her. She remembered the look she saw in her eyes as she tried to squeeze every last breath out of Hazel.
Maeve's brown eyes looked like liquid hate.
How someone could ever harbor such an amount of hate for another person, moreover her twin sister still baffled her.
And to think she never for once, despite all her sister had done to her, ever hated her.
Until now.
The hate she bore inside for her twin sister was like a growing wave –growing bigger with every movement.
Every trial she faced increased the hate she felt on the day Maeve stole her life from her.
In one day, she lost all she ever wanted to her sister –that, she could never forgive.
She wondered how Maeve had done it. Had she seduced Asher? She wondered.
She ruled that possibility however because she was sure Asher was never going to fall for such.
He was bound to her after their imprint and no amount of seduction could ever break that.
It had to be something more.
Had she cast a spell on him? It would make a lot of sense she was hanging out with witches.
Hazel could not stop drilling herself for the possible ways in which Maeve had been able to do what she did.
After getting frustrated over again, she gave up.
The cool breeze, the beautiful scent of the blooming flowers, and the comfortable sofa, slowly enticed Hazel to sleep.
It must have been poison, another thought slipped into Hazel's half-asleep mind.
"Yeah... poison," Hazel agreed with her subconscious.
Poison would have been effective just as any of the other means. Maeve would have just needed an opportunity to get it into his food or drink.
Or much more easily, she must have made him inhale it by letting out a gas-based poison.
Her mind was still at work, creating various possibilities when Hazel suddenly jerked up.
That was it.
Maeve had been able to get to Asher even when it was not possible. She could use the same medium Maeve had used.
She would be able to get near the prince if he was incapacitated. She could use poison for that.
Hazel was delighted at her findings.
She had never been so happy for her twin sister's deviousness till now.
It was just so ironic that Maeve had been the one to land her into such a mess and she seemed to be the one helping her out.
Now that Hazel had gotten a means, all she had to do was hatch a plan on how to poison the prince.
One thing Hazel knew was that she needed allies. There was no way she was going to take out her plan alone. And there was only one way she knew she could gain allies –money. This complicated her situation the more. It was more like this mission was out to challenge her rather than her just killing these Alphas. Every time she crossed over a stumbling block, another came rolling her way. With her head slumped backward and her eyes closed, she thought of ways she could get money. She placed the back of her hand against her head. Despite the cool breeze blowing, her temperature was high. Her head was probably overheating due the amount of thoughts that went through her mind per second. She had nothing she could sell. She could not even beg for money. That would draw too much attention to her and it would be easier to remember the redhead beauty who had begged for money.Damn it!She had only one option –to steal, but as easy as it seemed, it was not.She had never been one to steal any
It was a very awkward moment for both of them as Hazel stood with a smile plastered on her face which kept on getting weirder with every passing second as she contemplated her answer."Sure, why not," Hazel finally answered. The sound of her voice saying that snapped her out of her head. She had still been in a meeting with her mind, contemplating when her mouth had, on its own, carried out the task.A smile broke out on Sam's face and a look of relief washed over him.He actually was.He had been hoping she would not reject his offer. He had been hooked on her ever since their meeting on the road.He had wanted to tell Jeff, his chauffeur, to stop the car and give her a lift, but he was accompanied by his father.Their meeting had not been a coincidence. He had kept his eyes open and had hung at the bar closest to the town's entrance to spot her on arrival. The moment he had seen that beautiful mane of red hair walk past, he had immediately sprung to action and went after her.He di
Sam and Hazel made small talk as they ate and for a little moment, Hazel totally forgot about all her problems. She laughed heartily at Sam's jokes and listened intently to all he said, hanging on to every word as if it was her life. One time, when she listened to him talk, she took her time to assess him.He had a well-chiseled face, with a strong jaw. His features were mostly hard –lips that looked rough, a pointed nose that had a little flare at the nostrils, and eyebrows that did not have an arch to them but were straight thereby giving his face an unreadable expression. In all of this hardness, his soft baby blue eyes stood out, balancing the hardness with its softness. She could not look into his eyes. Every time she tried, she felt like she was drowning in a never-ending sea of blue.It was then it dawned on her what attracted her to him. It was not actually his beauty but it was because his eyes reminded her of someone else.It reminded her of Asher. The first time she had set
Tears threatened to fall from Hazel's eyes as she was hit by nostalgia as the performance went on.She struggled to hold herself together as the sweet music to the moon goddess was sung heartily by wolves who were in reverence to their keeper reminding her that at this moment, she was not one of them anymore. When the song was over, and the performers exited the stage, Hazel turned her eyes back to Sam and she caught him staring at her."You look sad," he commented. He had been staring at her all through the song and he had seen what looked like longing all over her face.Hazel gave a small smile which made her face, even sadder rather than happier, "No, I'm not. It is just the song, it is so beautiful," she said."Yeah... it is," Sam agreed but he still did not believe that was it.A noise on the stage took their attention away from and towards it as they both turned to see what it was.It was an acrobat who had come on stage performing some stunts."That is the cue that the main sho
Hazel was awake long before the birds started their morning lullaby.Raglan had proven useless last night again. Well, not totally useless. He had not helped her solve her problem but he had given her something else."You are so easy to sniff out because you have the stink of a human all over you. You are like a sheep in a wolf's den literally," Raglan had said to her. She had listened to him intently because she knew all that he was saying was true. She remembered how she had almost been caught by Gordon because she reeked of human scent and he could smell it."I have realized that that has been quite a challenge for you especially with blending in so I decided to get a solution for you," he said.He then reached into his princely robe and took out a tiny intricately decorated gourd which had attached to it, a silver chain, and handed it to her.Hazel accepted it wondering what it was."That is a powder made from wolf bones that have been burnt and crushed and gone through a ton of
A blonde-haired Hazel walked out of the salon. She walked with her head high as she was no longer terrified of being caught. No one could recognize her as the girl with fiery hair. She had not tampered with the length of the hair, so her hair still flowed down her back but she looked like a different person —except she met face-to-face with Sam himself. From the salon, she knew exactly where she had to be. Her destination was engraved in her mind and she walked in that particular direction. It was the shop where she had stolen the pair of shoes she was wearing. She walked into the shop and the same shop owner was standing at the counter. Today there were just a few people, unlike the other day when the shop was filled with people."Good morning ma'am, how can I help you?" The shop owner said with a smile on her face.Confident, Hazel returned the smile and greeting."I would like a new outfit," Hazel requested."Ooh... some last-minute shopping," the shop owner said and Hazel smiled.
Hazel marched to Alpha Gordon's palace. The place was alive with activity as finishing touches were being made to decorations for the event. With her new camouflage, Hazel walked about confidently observing and trying to fish out her prey. For her plan, she would need a caterer to be able to achieve it and this wasn't the problem.—The problem was how she was going to convince that person to help her out. Her bribe could end up backfiring on her if the person she approached was loyal to Gordon. The house was full of various caterers. So getting one wasn't the problem, convincing a good one was the problem.Gordon had invited people from far and wide and it was a well-known fact that the prince threw the biggest Moon festival so additional caterers were hired apart from the royal chef.Numerous times, Hazel wanted to approach someone but she was scared and so she didn't.After about two hours of roaming around, she went to sit down on one of the balconies. She looked down at the activi
Hazel was convinced she had made the wrong decision as the two men just stared at her in shock without saying anything. She should have thought about it more before barging up on them. What if they reported her now? What would she do?Her heart raced as she contemplated her next move. Should she keep going or should she just walk out of there?Hazel watched as The men's facial expressions moved from shock to fear and then to confusion. The whole palace was alive with various noises as people moved about and worked but at that moment, a deafening silence filled Hazel's ears.'Moon goddess help me!' Hazel prayed in her heart."Who the fuck are you?" Finally Winston the chef asked in an aggressive voice. His question threw her off guard with its harshness."Im–I'm," Hazel started to answer in a weak, shaky voice but then she stopped. She cleared her throat, stood straighter, and in a steady, confident voice, she said, "I am Edith."She knew she could not show these men fear. She had to b
"No!" Hazel's screams resonated through the walls of the midwives' workshop. Against their will, the midwives had lain Hazel on the worktable and had tied her limbs down to the table. One of the midwives took a cloth and started to stuff it into Hazel's mouth to muffle her screams. "Leave her mouth free. I want to listen to her screams," Raglan's cold voice echoed in the room, stopping the midwife. "Please Raglan! You can take my life but let this child live! He is innocent! Please!" Hazel pleaded with Raglan. "I should let the bastard child live?" Raglan chuckled. "I am putting an end to the lives of all the bastards in that family. Including the whore that dared bear him a child," Raglan said with such contempt his face contorted with disgust. Tears spilled down Hazel's face. She couldn't breathe. She knew this was likely going to be her end, but she had hoped she could escape. But she refused to give up on her son. Hazel continued to beg, offering her life in exchange for
Days had passed and Hazel was getting better and better in her skills as a princess of death but it wasn't as fast as she would have wanted it.Her baby would soon be out and she knew that the moment that happened, it was going to be the end of her.She worked harder in the small room she had created for herself, hoping to be able to restore her life to earth before the baby came. But all of these were difficult for her, especially since she had to avoid Raglan's mother by all means.Hazel had tried her possible best to steer clear of her. She knew that she hated her and she made sure she never had anything to do with her.But Raglan's mother made it her duty to be in Hazel's business. She found excuses to be around Hazel and to be part of her life and though Hazel tried her best to avoid her, it was not possible. As she finished her training with her instructor that day, Hazel slowly made her way to her room to rest but as she took the final bend, Raglan's mother immediately appeared
"What?!" Hazel squeaked, her face confused as to what she had just heard.Raglan held her by the shoulders his face lit up with a joy that she never believed could exist in the realm of darkness. He shook her as if to wake her from something."Hazel! We are in love! We now have a child on the way! All that's left is for us to get married!" Raglan said trying to connect some imaginary dots.Hazel knew she could not do this. She had endured the past weeks pretending to like him. Getting married to Raglan was going to the extreme and she was not sure she could survive it.With the same speed with which his face had lit up, the joy on his face dimmed out and a sadness replaced the light."You don't want me?" Raglan asked his voice pricking Hazel with the amount of pain that was in it.Hazel sighed. She knew this was not going to be easy. For her to secure what was hers, it was required of her to make certain sacrifices and this was one of them. With a weak smile that did not even touch he
Over the next few days, Hazel and Raglan's relationship blossomed.Raglan was so happy and he made sure everyone knew about him and Hazel –including his mother.Hazel was still trying to wrap her mind around how she became a girlfriend to the prince of death. The person who had taken away the joy from her life.Hazel had not factored a relationship between her and Raglan into her plans. She had envisioned a totally different trajectory for her plan and she was not happy with the way things were going.Raglan made sure she spent half of her day with him. He tried to make her move to his room but Hazel refused.Staying with Raglan meant she would have to have sex with him and that was something she dreaded happening. She however had been forced to be intimate with him. They cuddled in bed together before bedtime, and they kissed quite a lot –although she tried to find ways to avoid kissing him there was only so much she could refuse for her plan to really work. She did everything intend
Hazel spent the next twenty minutes thinking and rethinking her plan. 'What if it fails?' she asked herself. She knew that was a useless question to ask herself. She knew exactly what would happen if her plan failed. But there was no way she was going to back down. She placed her hands on her belly, rubbing it. She had to take the risk for the child's sake and his father's. With that in mind, Hazel got up and marched to the bed where Raglan lay lost to the world. He looked much more beautiful in sleep and he looked much less like the evil bastard that he was. Hazel looked at the left side of his chest. She knew he had no heart but she wished he had one so that she would have the satisfaction of impaling his heart just as how he had made her do so to all those Alpha's just for his selfish reason. Raglan was lucky she did not know how to send him to hell, she would have done it there and then. Rather, she got on the bed and started to try and take off his black tunic. It was no
She stood before the master of ceremony her entire body weak with fear. The master of ceremony turned back to face the crowd and then he rose both of his hands up into the air and then announced in a low voice, "It is time."As if on cue, the whole room erupted in a terrifying chant. The master of ceremony hurriedly walked away leaving Hazel standing in the middle tears running down her face as she witnessed the ritual happening around her.She could not move as she knew doing so will be fruitless. There was no possible way she was ever going to be able to make it out of the place without being caught moreover she was stuck there in fear. The blood that had been running past her legs started to flow faster. The chants from the demons grew frantic and the symbols on her body started to grow brighter and brighter making her body look like it had been set on fire.Hazel could feel a terrible presence in the room one which was more terrible than all the demons put together. This was follo
"When you said the entire realm would be present did you mean it?" Hazel asked Raglan as soon as Persia landed in front of the four walls.Raglan turned and looked at her dropping the reins. He could see fear spread all over her face."No, I didn't mean it literally," Raglan said to her. "Those who will be in attendance at the banquet are only royalty and those who matter. The rest will be celebrating it at other places."Hazel nodded, her anxiety was a tad bit relieved by his explanation."Shall we?" Raglan asked and he held out his free hand.Hazel nodded then took her hands off the chariot where she had been holding tightly for her dear life. Her legs were still wobbly from her experience but she willed herself to stand steady. The ride had been a bumpy one and many times, Hazel's stomach threatened to hurl out the contents of her stomach but she fought to keep it down. She clasped her hands once more in front of her and Raglan took ahold of her elbow guiding her down the chariot.
"You look so beautiful," Raglan said looking at her with eyes that were full of admiration."Thank you," Hazel said with a warm smile."So do you," She added and her comments were more than just mere flattery. Raglan looked really handsome even though he was dressed in intimidating attire. He had swapped his usual cloak for a tunic, black as night. Underneath the tunic, he wore what looked like chain mail armor, and in his left hand was a scepter that was shaped like a scythe, one very similar to the grim reaper's.There was something in Raglan's eyes as she looked at him. It was a look she had seen before but not on Raglan and it was weird that he had that look in his eyes as he looked at her.Her heart made a little flutter and she had to caution herself to keep her cheeks from reddening. She had to stay focused. The life of her child depended on it.Raglan also tried his best not to look into her eyes. That was very strange as he had never for once been timid before her or anyone
Hazel had lost track of time as she lay on the bed while her body was tattooed with a bunch of symbols she could not decipher. She had spent the time drifting in and out of sleep and when she woke up the last time, she was shocked to see that they had only even covered the front her neck to chest area, and her arms.It was now she understood the maid's issue about time. She wondered why just drawing figures will take so much time. She decided to glance down at what they were doing so she tilted her head down. When she did, she felt a sense of foreboding come over her.Something in her grew cold as a strong feeling of fear seized herAlthough she could not decipher the symbols drawn on her body, she knew that they were something extremely evil."What are these?" Hazel asked her voice more of a whisper."These are the truths of ancient times," The maid said, her voice very quiet as if in reverence to the symbols.Hazel did not know what she said but she did not ask further. She moved a
