“Wait, stop,” a man said as soon as I stepped out of the room with Adelaide. “The alpha said–”

“I know what the alpha said,” Adelaide told him. “But the doctor said she needs some exercise, plus the alpha wanted to see her, so don’t worry.”

“But–” he tried again

“You must know my brother is Jack, the alpha’s beta, right? Please don’t make me tell him you stopped me from doing what the alpha ordered me to do,” Adelaide said, her tone serious, and waved to me to follow her.

“Yes ma’am,” he said grumpily, but didn’t try to stop us again.

I had to admit that was pretty impressive how she handled him.

As soon as we were outside, she took a deep breath. “Ah, fresh air. A lot better than that stuffy old room.”

I took a deep breath too, feeling a small part of me relax. I couldn’t remember the last time I had been outside. “Come on,” Adelaide said with a small jerk of her head. “Let me show you how the monsters live.”
