“I have things to discuss with the mother of our pack’s heir.”

Those words sent a chill through my body. It has taken Imogen so long to get me ready that it is almost dusk. It feels like the middle of the night as the predicted thunderstorms crash across the skies. The huge, echoing ballroom has no windows to see the lightning flashes but the thunder rumbles deep enough to make the empty bottles on the floor dance with the vibrations.

“Of course. I am almost halfway through-”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” He spat, uninterested in my information. He pushed the floppy, greasy white hair from his face. “How could you be so stupid as to take the future heir of this pack away from their father!”

“I was upset. I didn’t think you cared for me anymore.”

“Upset! This is a war! Your fucking hormones are not relevant!”

/This isn’t going well/ Livi offered, /we need to flatter him, make him feel so special./ So I kept quiet. Allowed him to stew in his own thoughts all the while looking like a

Damn that Philippe is so totally off his rockers. I see some delusional narcissistic traits as wel. He really is a piece of work Hope Freya can get him. But expect that this is the night that Nikolai and Cillian come marching in and we have to wait to the end of Philippe until the next part.

The storm beat me back to Cillian. The whole camp was on edge, knowing the thunder and rain meant more than any other storm. They’ve all been briefed. The air is thick, and conversations only half-completed. Standing on guard in a soaking tent isn’t much fun but I didn’t even care. The autumn chill sees us wearing our long green shirts and black pants. The cover above leaks. The vicious wind flaps it, flinging water to the ground. The lightning flashes like whip cracks, tearing open the sky above. I’m hoping that won’t matter after a few more days. A strange kind of high consumes me. I know Freya is alive. I play images of bursting through those Rising Star double doors and finding her. I want to sweep her into my arms and see her eyes blaze with ferocious color. I imagine placing my hand on her rounded stomach and a strange fluttering consumes my belly. I need to tell her that even though I briefly knew the sensations of a matebond my heart never left her. I was always hers if she

This is not a good time to find out I am totally full of shit. I’m not the brave, daring Freya who can kill her own mate. I’m not my mother fearlessly taking on anyone who might dare cause her trouble. “Prove it,” he had growled. Prove I love him by accepting whatever degrading plan he has for my body. I’m terrified. Shaking, to the very core. I haven’t slept since returning to my room. Each hour that passes by has me pacing the floor. The awful pink silk dress was immediately discarded, the golden ornaments flung onto the table. My skin itched and burned. The image of the poor Beta being murdered, purely for hearing a vulnerability in his Alpha was just further proof that the man I considered my soulmate was long gone. What remains? Merely a husk of a man, driven by his purple-eyed wolf to commit atrocities in the name of obsession. /There is still a chance for Asgard to save us yet. To talk to Phillipe/ Livi murmurs but her words are hollow. The only way to bring down my heartbea

The whooping and back-slapping soon died down once we started working our way through into enemy territory. Thick mud slowed our progress. “We could just shift you know,” Sawyer groaned as we hauled him out of yet another quagmire. He was still tetchy about his precious white-blonde hair getting dirtied earlier. “We shift we lose the element of surprise. Stronger scent and making yourself three times bigger isn’t what we need right now,” I reply. Then raising an eyebrow, “Unless you want to rake about the castle naked?” “Might do when we’ve won,” Easton chipped in. “Might run from end to end of each of those five wings with my dick out for the hell of it.” “Hell yeah, “ Finn laughed quietly, “They’ll soon forget the Hybrids when they see your monster flopping about,” and all of us chuckled. “Better not get mine out or the locals will fetch pitchforks,” Tucker boasted, unable to help himself as his huge black plaits swished. “I think you mean binoculars Tucker,” I joined in, get

Freya has taken my breath away a fair few times. This one rocked me to my bones. My beautiful girl stands statue-like in the centre of the room with her back to me. Hidden by shadows, her chocolate curls tumble down past her shoulders, a tattered, shitty pink silk slip barely covering her. The only part of her moving were her trembling, furled hands as they gripped the hem of the slip by her hips. On the floor lies Phillipe. Not moving and getting greyer every second. Lighting the room was the dull, reddish glow of the blood moon. I scramble to my feet and fumblingly try to understand the darkly frozen scene before me. Snapping back into life Freya quickly takes off the ring and throws it down onto his lifeless body before breathing quickly, so rapid and ragged she might be falling into a panic attack.. /Softly, remember how we hurt Finn./ “Freya, I’m here.” “I know,” she whispered back, her voice breaking. “Don’t look at me,” Slowly I take another step forward but the crunching

They say women bear multiple children because the brain can somehow remove the memory of the pain. Or at least dull it enough so that you’re not traumatised into avoiding ever going through it again. That’s what Zeke’s attempting to achieve now. Swiftly found down in the cells by one of Zeke’s men, the doctor confirmed our baby is unharmed before issuing Zeke a series of lotions. I hated seeing the barely-concealed horror in their faces as the vile pink nightgown was exchanged for a soft white robe and silk shorts. My eyes were squeezed shut as he examined me, especially the small, tender bump. Those welts were the cruellest. “Nobody else will see you until you are ready, I swear. I have sent for your mother plus the traditional pack surrender actions are underway too.” Zeke assured me, his voice dark and rich, laced with authority. Another version of the man I love has emerged. Who is this calm, masterful leader? He is not hopping with rage nor whooping at victory. Instead he loo

I fell asleep in his arms and for the first time, woke up to find him still there. I smiled, realising I was nestled in the crook of his arm, my hair a messy tangle of wild curls sprawling across his chest. From the arm I had draped across him, I could see the red welts were vanishing. Now they are just faint silvery lines of past pain. Drifting away like a bad dream. /I’m still working on getting rid of all the marks, be patient/ Livi mentioned quickly /I was distracted/Dickstracted, I corrected her as the scent of the salve in the air made a fresh blush race across my smiling face.Zeke shifted lazily in his sleep and the temptation to repay the sleepy, sensual torture he gave me was irresistable. Except duty calls. I have no idea how long Phillipe has been dead but there is a pack waiting to be run. No doubt proclamations to sign, warrants to stamp. Here I am having a nap.“I can feel you stressing out,” he grumbled, rubbing his eyes with his free hand. His fresh stubble gave hi

I cannot believe the rest of the shifter nation used to look down upon Shadowlands. Rising Star is a basket case. Dressed in a stunning long blue gown, her hair radiantly wild with eyes that continued to tease me despite no longer being in bed I followed Freya towards one of the parlour rooms.Cobwebs, the scent of stale air, and the shadows of missing picture frames greeted us. The pale, milky sofas were dusty, the desk overturned with delicate ivory paper scattered across the wooden floor.“This used to be Luna Hollie’s space, I always liked it in here,” she admitted. “Phillipe was only Alpha for a few months. I don't know how everything turned so bad.”I am good for some things, at least. With a grunt, I hoisted the heavy wooden desk back to upright and set about opening the windows to let fresh air in. The huge sash windows looked away from the border, from Shadowlands, the tunnels and reservoir but instead towards the smattering of villages and towns that covered the grassy hills

I half expected fear to course through my bones when that crowd turned hostile. But Zeke never let go of my hand, never abandoned me for a second. Whilst we walked I noticed him watching me, slyly staring at my bump and it made me feel like a Goddess. /WIll our baby have his gorgeous olive skin or my huge curls? Maybe both/ Livi cooed for the thousandth time. When he stood up for me and reminded the pack members how they had all stood silent and backed a warmonger I couldn't have felt prouder. Pinton village was pretty and quaint, nearly everything vertical wall covered in purple flowering wisteria, despite the autumn chill. The local women soon advised us of a house that was empty for Zeke and I to rest in rather than return to the castle. I’d happily never return. I’ve nothing but sour, ruined memories there now.Doctor Thatcher is pleased with the baby, I only have another five months to go and I’ll be a Luna and a mother. Everything should be perfect and happy. Except I know this

It can’t be the packhouse that created this change in her. From the second I walked into her room, filthy from the day's labour, she sized me up like prey and left me practically drooling. She knows exactly what that midnight blue gown does to her figure. A thigh-high split, too? Cruelty in spades. I was more than willing to give her space. I can cuddle, be affectionate, and listen until the end of time. I’ve massaged more oil into her delicate soft skin and bump than I would have thought possible. Sometimes, such rubdowns ended in tears as memories overwhelmed her. Other times, I was able to send her up to heaven in a state of bliss. It’s been a rollercoaster. I’ve dug my way out of my own pit of grief, Freya had been living on hold for so long. She’d been on the run, trapped back at White Forest, held at Rising Star against her will. Shitbag Phillipe had dared to put his hands on her and thankfully paid the fucking price. I regret never getting to land a blow on him myself. But it

That mysterious mate of mine. Slinking around like a fox, those dark eyes always threaten something fun or interesting. The love he has for Aisling almost sets me off crying every time. I can’t deny I have been a rollercoaster for the past few months. Or a complete fucking nightmare. Maybe a bit of both. Taking tea with Doctor Thatcher the day before our journey to White Forest he confirmed I have physically recovered from childbirth. Aisling is flourishing. I have nothing to worry about. “Then why am I so worried? Why is my head filled with constant doubt about everything going wrong?” He sipped his tea thoughtfully, before placing the cup down and steepling his hands. In a steady, doctor-mode voice, he replied, “because you have been through an awful lot Luna. Phillipe made you question your worth. Years believing you weren’t quite good enough, that you always had to try harder. Now?” “Now…I know Zeke loves me exactly as I am. I know he doesn’t want me to change.” “Well as lov

The past few months have been insane. I had naively considered Phillipe’s dead body being slung out of the castle like trash as the end of the matter. Live happily ever after, job done. Sadly, just shouting the war is over isn’t the end of the battle for an Alpha and Luna. Not that the title sits well with me. I doubt it ever will. But it annoys Freya for me to protest too strongly about my title. Plus, I have learned an awful lot about the hormonal fun and games one can encounter with the heavily pregnant. To say she kept me on my toes over winter is an understatement. I fucking loved every second of it. She pushes, I pull her back in. Either way she ends up in my arms, talking a million miles a minute about all the ideas she has working away in her mind. I got to be there for all her quiet little whispered fears too. If the pack likes her, being a mother. Next to roaring fires eating the same rations as everyone else, we lived a fairly quiet existence. Baby names drove her mad. F

The next five months see us settle into a strange, comfortable routine. After only a night under their roof, I immediately commandeered Finn’s barn conversion for us. Much as I adore my parents, I don’t want to be in the same house as them. That is not entirely due to my mate bond either. They still have an ever-burning adoration of each other that I can only hope Briss and I match in decades' time. I just don't need to hear it. Ever.It appears Finn isn’t coming home anytime soon. He’s embedded into Shadowlands, no doubt a future legend in the making. So now Briss and I sleep in the huge double bed with its skylight to the stars. When Briss isn’t building boats, we take out my father’s smaller one. Refreshing my memory on the rigging, sails, and navigation. On a night, we look at the maps together, sprawled out along the table in the downstairs half of the barn. Where the sea reaches the edges of the paper with no known landfall, I know those areas interest Briss the most. The boat

It took over four days for us to finally leave that cabin. It still wasn’t enough time. In an easy cocoon of happiness, we existed together. I don’t think I saw her clothed for the vast majority of the time. And why would we? In that tiny wooden space, everything fell into place. Our bodies are made for each other, but the more time we spend together, the more I learn more about her every day. We talked for hours, curled up on the small bed. Then she’ll give me a look that just sends a bolt of lightning to my cock and I have to have to have her. It’s impossible to deny the power of the mate bond. My ribs and chest have not hurt since the connection formed. Shi apologised, explaining how it was his only way to make me realise she was important. The power of Padgett’s twisted ploy removed, he and Zena’s wolf Sybil were finally able to unleash their infatuation with each other. I know how badly Shi has fallen for her brassy, quick wolf because we share dreams. When we wake, Zena curl

I believe that Padgett was right to choose me. She just got the reason wrong. Her visions suggested I was next in line to wield the strength of that ancient wolf. To carry on tradition. I believe the Moon Goddess always knew I was going to be the one to break the line. I’m a drifter, not a leader. Rules are a challenge. I run from fights, even the ones I’ve started. How was I ever meant to lead a coven! It was lunacy from the start. Yet poor Padgett persisted, despite having the devoted Jane right there. That’s why it felt so right. To step into those blue and white flames and try to return Padgett’s wolf spirit back to the Goddess. Hopefully, she will eventually be joined by all the stolen Hybrid spirits. It is unclear just how many wolves Ruth hosted in the end. Cillian told me the colours, but so many poor souls have been harmed in this war it is impossible to tell. For all we know, she could have kept Alpha Brandon, Luna Hollie, and some of the golden-eyed Beta Warriors for her

Zena is as good as her word. We have a truck to ourselves, stacked with food and other goods. Without revealing a single detail she triumphantly set us up in as much comfort as possible.Every other truck was overflowing with men, stuffed together like sardines. On a passenger bench big enough for three I sat stretched out, my wounded leg supported with a makeshift pillow-thing she had built out of all the discarded and ripped shifter clothes. Zena next to me driving, continuously catching my eye with a proud little smile on her face. She hasn’t stopped for a second. I can only watch as her mind works overtime. I know better than to question whatever scheme she has going on. Eventually, the whole convoy starts up and we are away. Zena drives steadily, making sure we end up at the very back of the Shadowlands convoy. She doesn't give her burned out coven a second glance. There was no special pyre or ceremony for Padgett either. Her body has been lost to the cabin fires. A woman who ha

  • The Luna Who Wants Everything   44. Zena

I cannot wait to get out of this dusty, blood-stained patch of dirt. Not a single cabin remains standing. Just black, charred skeletons. While Briss first slept I held his hand and stared at them. Trying to make sense in my own mind of just what my life should become now. I didn’t want to look too closely at the bodies. Padgett had described me as a river, always heading towards what I want. But this place was never what I wanted. Unlike Jane, it never felt like home. It taught me so much, how to use my gift but then the image of sweet little Phoebe Kharkov comes into my head. What if a thoughtful, gentle girl like her ended up in this lonely wasteland? Too many women have had their gift manipulated and forced into use. Look at Luna Genevieve and Helena. Mated to Alpha’s yet blighted with glimpses of pain and disaster, distorting their potential joy. What if the Moon Goddess and her plans should just be left the fuck alone? Then they could be free. I could be free. Ideas rattle a

When I wake up again, I am half tempted to severely reprimand Shi for making me fade out of the most perfect moment of my life. I was in Zena’s arms, surrounded by jasmine and love, and now…well where the hell am I? “You’re awake!” Zena cries, and I do my best not to cry out in pain at feeling her roll into my arms, planting fierce kisses on my cheeks. “We’re still in the north, up at the coven?” I murmur after allowing myself to be spoiled with rough, greedy affection for a minute. I have just enough strength to lift my arm, trailing my fingers over her bare neck. I close my eyes again, overpowered by the sensation of feeling her perfectly soft skin under my fingertips. “Yes but not for long. Then do you know what-” “Zena let me treat him,” a stern voice reprimanded. I squinted at the sun over my head. “He’s seriously weak.” I might be mistaken, but I’m almost certain I heard Zena growl under her breath at the request. With a dozen more soft kisses, she lifted herself away but k
