Braden’s grip on my hand tightened as he took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, Claudia. We can try again. The doctors want to keep you here for a few days to run tests, to find out what happened. We lost the baby.”
His words shattered my world. The weight of his apology hung in the air as I sank back into the pillows, the reality of what he was saying settling in. My baby… our baby… was gone. I blinked rapidly, trying to hold back the flood of tears threatening to spill. The hollow ache in my chest seemed to expand with every heartbeat, a vast emptiness I wasn’t sure I could ever fill.
Braden pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly against his chest as I sobbed. The rhythmic beat of his heart beneath my ear was the only sound I could focus on as I let the grief consume me. His arms wrapped around me, offering me the only comfort I could accept at that moment. But even his warmth couldn’t chase away the cold, gnawing sensation that settled deep in my bones.
Minutes—or perhaps hours—passed as we stayed like that, tangled in our grief, until the storm of tears finally subsided. I pulled away from Braden, wiping my damp cheeks with the back of my hand. My throat felt raw, my head throbbed, and my body ached, but the worst pain came from the deep emptiness in my belly. The life that had once been there was gone, snatched away before I had the chance to protect it.
“How did this happen?” I whispered, my voice hoarse. “I don’t understand. Everything was fine. I was careful.”
Braden exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair, his jaw clenched. “The doctors said it was likely the stress from you having a fall” he muttered. “You lost so much blood, Claudia. By the time I got to you…”
His voice trailed off, and the guilt in his eyes was unmistakable. He blamed himself. A fall ... I don't remember that?
“It’s not your fault,” I said, trying to sound stronger than I felt. But deep down, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something else was at play, something we didn’t understand. My hand drifted to my belly again, the small bump that should have grown with life now felt like a painful reminder of what was lost.
Braden shifted beside me, his blue eyes filled with an intensity that unsettled me. “Claudia, when I found you… there wasn’t a man. There were no signs of anyone around. You were alone, unconscious.”
I stared at him, confused. The memory of the stranger in the woods—the man with the striking eyes—was vivid in my mind. His face, his voice, the way he had looked at me like I was something precious. How could it have not been real?
“But I saw him, Braden. He was there. He touched me,” I whispered, my voice wavering. “He… he knew me. I’m not crazy.”
Braden’s jaw tightened, his hand gripping mine again. “I believe you,” he said carefully, but there was doubt in his voice. “But the warriors searched the area, and there was no trace of anyone. No scent, no tracks. Whoever—or whatever—you saw, it wasn’t there when I found you.”
A chill ran down my spine as his words sunk in. Could it have been a hallucination brought on by the blood loss and the fear? But the memory felt too real, too vivid. I could still recall the way his breath had brushed against my skin, the way his eyes had looked at me with a mixture of longing and pain.
I shook my head, refusing to accept that it was all in my imagination. “No,” I insisted. “He was real. I remember his face, his voice. He told me he’d been looking for me.”
Braden’s expression darkened, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Claudia, what else did he say?” His tone was tense now, like he was trying to piece together a puzzle. “Did he give you a name? Anything?” He looked at me urgently as i felt a shiver crawl up my spine.
I swallowed hard, replaying the encounter in my mind. The stranger’s words were fuzzy, disjointed in my memory, but one phrase stood out. “He said… he said I didn’t belong here,” I whispered. “And then he tried to get me to leave with him.”
Braden’s eyes flashed with a mixture of anger and concern. He stood abruptly, pacing the small hospital room. He keeps his back to me before he walks back over to the bed. "Put it out of your mind for now, I'll take care of it, your safe with me. I'm always going to keep you safe." I nod as I shuffle over onto my side sinking into the bed. Of course he will take care of me but ... I know what I saw. That feeling niggles its way into my chest I have never doubted Braden but now I feel as if I am missing something, that he is keeping something from me.
I feel the bed dip as Braden places a soft, fleeting kiss on my cheek. “Get some rest,” he tells me, patting my head as I lean back into my pillows. My eyes burn as I struggle not to shed the tears for the loss of our child. This is so unexpected—we’re young and wolves; this shouldn’t have happened. I turn facing the window as I watch the world go by, desperate for the tears to fall. “I’ll get you some more water. Is there anything else you need?” he asks softly as I shake my head, pulling the blankets up around me.
It feels like only yesterday we were so happy planning for this for our family. I stroke my tiny bump that warm fuzzy feeling I always got no longer there.
“Come for me baby,” Braden grunts behind me as I arch my back up my hips in the air as I lean on my forearms, careful of my little bump so I don’t squish baby into the mattress. “I’m close,” I call out as I feel Braden flex his hips behind me, sinking deeper. Sweat drips down my body as his hand toys with my clit that has me screaming into the pillow beneath me. I feel him howl before he pulls out and flops down on the bed beside me. A gleam in his eyes as he watches me its always the same look he gets after we make love. Something deep and possessive that has my heart skipping a beat.“Best we make the most of that before the little one comes,” he jests, stroking my belly as I roll over to look at him, snuggling up beside him as I lean my head on his chest. “Lots of couples still manage to have sex Braden. Otherwise how would anyone have more than one pup?” I smirk back as he grins wickedly at me. “I know, but it won’t be the same,” he frowns slightly as if realising something.“We w
Braden came in the following morning to see how I was doing. Apparently, whatever he was working on with the alpha took its sweet time. He saw my annoyed expression, his brows gnashing together. “Baby don’t it’s my job I came as soon as I could,” I pressed my lips together seeing his fresh set of clothes and I picked up the scent of his lime shower gel so he clearly had time to shower before coming here.I turned to look back out the window, the thin grey light casting shadows over the narrow streets as people wrapped up in more layers than normal, fighting off the chill. I could see several more guards on the street doing patrols once again.“Why are there so many guards?” I ask, changing the subject as Braden comes to sit on the bed beside me, taking my hand in his. “It’s a precaution, something Alpha Ansel wants. There is some discord in the pack,” he states matter-of-factly. I glance back out the window as I watch the people pass by. To look at them, you wouldn’t think there were
“I do,” he nod patting my hand as he smooths the blankets on my bed. “Did you sleep alright?” he asks, his voice soft as he looks my way. “No, but I never sleep well without you,” he gives me a knowing smile as he squeezes my leg. “It should only be a couple more days, then we can take you home.” He gives me a wink, a signature trait I have seen him do countless times. The first was when he first brought me to the pack house to meet Alpha Ansel. I don’t remember much about my home pack, but meeting Ansel and his girlfriend Gaia was a daunting experience. Sensing my nerves Braden gave me an encouraging wink. Gaia and I quickly became best friends. She was the most stunning girl I had ever seen with long flowing wavy blonde hair, bright blue eyes, tanned skin and rosy lips. She was the envy of every woman in the pack and annoyingly the kindest and sweetest person I had ever met. It was impossible to hate her.Ansel was a rugged, intimidating man in his late thirties. After not finding h
“In time,” I add as he nods. His jaw clicks before a smile appears on his face. “Of course baby,” something about his tone irritates me, but I put it down to whatever pressure Ansel is putting him through. Whilst Ansel is alpha and leads the pack, Braden basically runs it for him, ensuring everything is taken care of. I still see the faint bruises on his knuckles, something that should have healed with his wolf. He told me there wasn’t a fight, but I can’t think what else would have caused this … not even training would result in these kinds of bruises. The nurse comes in, taking some of my blood before she gives me some meds. My eyes grow heavy as I sink back into my pillow. “Sleep baby, I’ll be here when you wake up,” Braden purrs, kissing the tip of my pointed nose as I slip into a deep sleep. Visions of our wedding flutter through my mind.“I do,” Braden says, squeezing my hand in his. He looks dashing in his dark grey suit and tie, Ansel conducts our ceremony wearing all black an
When we sit in the car, he turns to look at me with an intense look that has me pressing my thighs together. “You really are beautiful,” he muses more to himself than to me. I see his eyes focus on my lips as he leans across the space, the driver pulling away as he places a soft kiss on my lips. It’s unhurried, sweet, as if he is memorising my taste.Heat takes over my body, flooding my senses as it pounds in my veins, and before I know it, I am pushing Braden back into his seat as I hike my dress up so I can straddle his legs with a confidence I wasn’t expecting for my first time. Somehow it just feels right. I go to kiss him once more as he watches me with that burning intensity. “Have you done this before?” he asks, an edge to his voice as I stop halting my movements as I lean back on his legs, looking at him. I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear.“No … I just-” he frowns at me as he adjusts me on his legs so our bodies are flush together. I feel his hardness stir beneath me as I
Braden leads me to where we are staying. Our new home. I had hoped we would go away for our honeymoon, but Braden said he wanted us to create our best memories where we live, not somewhere else. As I step inside for the first time, I take in my surroundings. I can’t really see much of the place, as it is covered in dark red flower petals and candles. “Braden …” he smiles, lifting me into his arms as he begins to walk me through the huge place until he walks us into the bedroom. The faint flickering light dances off the walls as every surface is covered in petals. The scent of roses hanging heavy in the air. I watch as he shrugs off his jacket, releasing his tie, his muscles flexing beneath the fabric of his shirt until layer after layer they pool at the floor. When he pulls out his belt, his eyes gleaming, his slacks sitting low on his hips my eyes don’t know where to look with how handsome he is.“Take off your dress Claudia,” my gaze shifts back to his as I realise I have just been
I had a procedure to remove the baby, and after three days of tests, observations, and taking blood, I was finally ready to leave. My mind wandered to the handsome stranger I had met that fateful night. I was so sure it had been real, but after all my time in the hospital, it felt like a distant dream. Even my wolf couldn’t be sure anymore.Everyone kept telling me I had fallen, the impact jarring the baby. As a result, when I walked home... well, I know how it ended. Braden helped me shower at the hospital. His touches were soothing and gentle as he helped me wash my hair and bathe. He was so kind that I felt tears well up as the hot spray warmed my back. I had wanted to give him a child more than anything. He would never say it, but I felt as if I had disappointed him somehow. Despite his care, I found his touch distant. When he turned me to face him, he looked detached."It's probably his own way of coping with the loss," I thought. Everyone responds differently. Maybe he’ll feel b
My lungs burned as I stumbled through the dense underbrush, the wild throb of my heartbeat pounding in my ears along with the sound of my feet over the uneven ground of the dark woods. Moonlight filtered in thin shafts through the canopy above as I desperately tried to make my way back home. Each step was a struggle, my body wracked with agonizing pain with every stride.A shadow flickered at the corner of my vision. There was someone else here, in the center of New Moon Pack's territory. A soft crush of dead leaves, the snap of a twig underfoot had my head spinning to see who was behind me. Yet each time I searched, they disappeared before I could catch a glance of who it was.The branches and trees seemed to reach out to grab me with their spindle-like fingers, slowing me down as if trying to stop me from making my way home. From getting away from whoever hunted me. I didn’t know who it was, but this was my pack, my home. Whoever was following me wasn’t from here—someone had breache
