My body is preparing to block her, the training Reuben and Pierce have given me falling into place. Like second nature.

But Annabel stops, freezes in fact.

Her body is immobile yet her eyes are wide in sheer terrified panic. For a single second I’m confused as to how so much anger can make a person stiffen on the spot.

Then I see him, the predator prowling towards his victim, towards his prey. I’ve never seen this side of Pierce, never seen the true alpha trait that he embodies, that he seems to keep satiated when I’m in his presence. This version of him, which was pure predator, made my blood run cold.
