River

Watching his wife's abdomen continue to grow as she carried his child was an amazing feeling, something River never realized could be so enthralling. He had always wanted children, but he had never known how rewarding it would feel to see his baby growing every day and know that his wife was building that baby all by herself. It truly was a miracle, and he couldn't be prouder of Ellie than he was as he gazed at her on a daily basis as she progressed through the pregnancy.

But he was also worried. Everything seemed like a threat now. Not only was he worried about the fact that he couldn't figure out how those rogues were getting over the chasm without leaving tracks that led right up to the ravine, but he hated that he couldn't track them. When he went all the way around to try to figure out where they had crossed the ravine and where they had disappeared to, he had had no luck, and River was starting to get frustrated.

"It's been two months, sir," Beta Andrew reminded him as the

EllieThe day was finally here. Ellie had been looking forward to this day almost as long as she'd been looking forward to her own wedding before it had taken place. Now, after what seemed like decades of planning–though it had really only been a few months over a year–it was finally time for Shelby and Carl to get married.Shelby looked radiant. Ellie couldn't help but smile at her best friend as the two of them got ready in the small room in the chapel. Shelby had asked several other girls from high school to be her bridesmaids, but the room was so small, they'd had to get ready elsewhere. It was only Ellie, Shelby's mom, Unice, and the flower girl, Shelby's cousin's daughter, Gracie, who was four. While Shelby's mother was wiping away her tears, Shelby didn't look sad at all. No, if Ellie had to choose one word to describe her best friend, it would have to be triumphant. She looked like she had finally conquered the world.A knock at the door drew her attention away from the mirro

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 133: What's in a Name?

EllieWhile she had to admit, she'd never tried carrying a bowling ball around in her shirt before, by the time she was seven months pregnant, Ellie had to imagine that that's what it felt like lugging the baby around wherever she went. It seemed like she must not have gained as much weight as many of the women in the pack expected her to as many of them made comments about how she still looked lovely and had, "kept her figure," but Ellie didn't feel that way. In fact, with every passing day, she felt more like a poofy marshmallow woman than a beautiful Luna who could easily wear high heels and fit into a little black dress. Not that she had even seen her feet recently to tell what she was wearing on them.Gone were her days of taking the other women out on patrol and practicing anything that meant shifting. Likewise, she wouldn't go outside in the late summer heat if it meant she would be first in line at an all-you-can-eat rocky road ice cream and sour dill pickle stand. No, she wa

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 134: Not in Labor

EllieContractions were capable of being ignored if one concentrated enough. At least, that's what Ellie told herself early one fall morning when she woke up with the realization that the painful cramping she was feeling from time to time in her stomach were getting more regular and stronger. They were working in the office in River's village, and the midwife, Nancy, had been alerted that she should be at the ready, so there was no reason for Ellie to panic. Her water hadn't broken yet, after all. So if she sat in her chair behind her desk and continued working, she wouldn't have to tell anyone that she was in labor. The longer she could ignore it, the longer she could go without having to push this kid out.It wasn't that she didn't want to have the baby. She absolutely couldn't wait to see her child, to hold the baby in her arms, to cuddle and do all of the things she'd been dreaming of with her child and her husband since she'd found out she was pregnant. But actually having the ba

EllieThe warm water of the birthing pool helped. It helped the same way that an aspirin helped when a person had their arm chopped off.Not that Ellie had ever had her arm chopped off, but she could imagine it was similar. Still, she was committed now, and she was going through with this despite the fact that she was seriously regretting her decision to have this baby this way. When the midwife had offered her drugs early on in the process, when they'd originally discussed the options and then again this afternoon when the question of "are you sure" had been posed to her, she should've been allowed a few moments to confer with a jury of her peers–other mothers who had gone through this before and knew better than she did. Practical women. Women with good memories. Women with low pain tolerances. Ellie had never thought of herself as having a low tolerance for pain, but then, she'd also never tried to drag a watermelon through her nostril. And if River told her she was doing great one

RiverThe baby was here–his baby.Their babyEllie was holding their baby on her chest, and River couldn't even believe how amazing it felt to see this teeny tiny person and know that he and Ellie had made her.Her.They had a daughter. They'd made a Luna.At the moment, he couldn't even process that because he was too busy thinking about how beautiful she was. Her hair was light blonde like her mother's, and her eyes were a crystal blue. She was also incredibly red and angry the way that her mother had been just a few moments ago, though Ellie didn't seem mad anymore (and he couldn't blame her for being angry when she was so unbelievably uncomfortable.)"Alpha River, do you want to cut the umbilical cord?" the midwife asked, holding up some special scissors.River was nervous about this, but he looked down to see that Nancy had already put some clips on the cord to show exactly where he was supposed to cut it so that it was dummy-proof, and even though he was usually confident about

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 137: No Sleep

EllieHaving a baby was hard. Being a mother was harder.Ellie had known that it would be, but it wasn't until about two weeks in when she was running on empty, after only getting a minimum of four hours of sleep in a row per night, feeling like her brains were made of mashed potatoes, and her body still wasn't hers, that she suddenly realized that the hard part didn't end when she pushed the baby out. Her boobs were huge and they hurt like h*ll, regardless of whether or not there was a little glutton latched on to one of them. When her tiny daughter wasn't there filling herself up until she was so milk-drunk she looked like she was totally wasted, Ellie had to worry about leaking all over herself. But that wasn't the only bodily fluid she had to worry about. H*ll, it wasn't even the only one of her bodily fluids that might come out unexpectedly. Oh, no. Not everything snapped back right away. Sneezing was dangerous. And then… there was a reason those massive maxi pads came home with

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 138: That's Not Helpful

EllieThe moment Ellie realized that it was 8:45, and she had been asleep for over six hours, she flew out the door from her bedroom into the hallway. "Shelby!" she shouted. "River! Where's Michaela!" She headed straight for the nursery, which was the next room over, and her hand was about to turn the knob on the door when River's arms came down around her. "Hey, honey. I'm glad you're up, but why are you yelling?" her husband asked in a whisper, pulling her back. "Everything is okay. Did you have a bad dream?""No, I'm fine," Ellie told him, her heart still racing. "Is the baby okay?" She was still so confused."She's fine. She's asleep. Or… she was." He had the baby monitor clipped to his belt loop. Pulling it off, he checked it. Ellie could see for herself that Michaela was in her bed. She was a bit restless, but her mother could see her, and she was fine.Ellie's eyebrows furrowed. "But… she can't possibly have been asleep this long," Ellie said, moving away from the nursery door

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 139: Keep Them Safe

RiverBeing away from Michaela was hard, but River had work to do. He had to continue his work as an Alpha because the rogues that they'd been sighting for weeks were being spotted more regularly now, and he was starting to get a little nervous."We saw them this morning," Andrew said while they were looking at a map in the office in the village before they went out on a patrol. "There were six of them, and they were over here." He pointed at a spot nearer the village than they had ever been. They were clearly inside of the pack territory now."Which way were they headed?" River asked, just wanting to make sure that he understood what he'd been told earlier."They were headed southeast," Andrew said. "We think they'd been even closer to the village earlier in the evening, but no one saw them until the patrol came by around five. By then, they were headed back out.""What do you think they were doing?" River couldn't quite understand what they were up to."We don't know, but they can't

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 150: The Moon Goddess Ball

EllieThe string quartet was playing a soft, slow song that seemed to make the silver stars above them twinkle even more somehow as Ellie stood admiring the scene. She'd been right. Everything had come together perfectly, and all across the dance floor, couple after couple had paired off. Her students were finding their fated mates. Alphas and Betas from packs far and wide were coming together with women that had trained in her school."Well, what do you think, beautiful?" River asked, stepping over from where he'd been speaking to another Alpha who'd come with his wife and son, who was their age and looking for a wife so he could take over the pack. "I would say this is a huge success.""Definitely," Ellie agreed. "I see so many people dancing together and falling in love.""I know," River said. "Look at Sarah and Alpha Rob over there. And Nelly and Alpha Lance."Ellie had noticed both of those couples. Sarah looked so lovely in her red dress, and Nelly in her blue one, gazing into L

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 149: Finishing Touches

EllieThe final touches for the Moon Goddess Ball were falling into place, and Ellie couldn't believe how beautiful the event center looked. As she looked around at all of the decorations, her heart fluttered in her chest. She could only imagine how many couples might fall in love in there tonight. It hadn't been easy, getting everything ready for the event, but along with Michael, River, Shelby, and several other volunteers, Ellie had gotten it done. Not only had they put together a beautiful event center, but they'd also managed to get several Alphas and Betas from packs far and wide to commit to attending, and for the past several days, they'd been arriving. Many of them were staying in the cabins in the pack village, the same ones that the Alphas who had competed in her contest had stayed in.Ellie pushed those thoughts out of her mind. It all seemed like ancient history now. The bachelors remaining from that contest would be back that night, still looking for love, though there w

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 148: Plans

EllieThe idea of having a Moon Goddess Ball with the women she'd been training to become Lunas was ultimately the idea behind the training to begin with, so when River came in and suggested that they have the grand opening of the new event center be just that, a Moon Goddess Ball for the women in her class, Ellie couldn't believe her ears."Do you think that's a good idea?" River asked her."No, I don't think that's a good idea," Ellie told him, watching his face fall."You don't?" River blinked a few times. It was clear he was searching for something to say that wouldn't offend her."No. I think… it's a great idea," she said, winking at him.A smile broke across his face, wide enough to match her own. "Oh, he said. Good. I was afraid you were going to tell me that it was a bad idea.""No, I definitely think we should do that," she said. "In fact, I think we should start planning it right now. When is the full moon?"River pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked the calendar.

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 147: The Event Center

River Rebuilding after the fire wasn't easy, but it was something that brought the entire pack together. In a way, River was slightly glad, though he'd never say it out loud. Supervising the project while Michael recovered from his injuries was interesting. River invited some of the members of his own pack to come over and help. At first, it seemed like there was a bit of a divide between the two groups, but once the "outsiders" proved their value, everyone began to work smoothly together. It took quite a while to clear away the debris from the old event center. After that, they planned a new one. This one was better. It was bigger with more rooms for different events. River had the pack architect draw it out with input from several of the pack elders and other important members of the pack, including Michael, who was out of the hospital by then and staying with Ellie and River so that the pack Luna could spend as much time as possible with her dad. River knew it had really shaken El

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 146: Michael's Love

EllieIt took a few days before Michael was able to come out of the coma, but part of that was because the healers thought it would help him heal if they kept him in a medically induced coma, so by the time he finally opened his eyes three days after the attack, Ellie was thrilled. She was also exhausted, but seeing her father's eyes register on her own made all of that fade away momentarily. "Dad?" she said, looking at his familiar face. "How are you feeling?""Ellie?" he said, his voice weak. He still had an oxygen mask over his face, but all of the tubes and other wires had been removed, other than the monitor hooked up to his finger and the IV he had in his arm in case he needed more medicine. "Where's Michaela?""She's at home with River," Ellie said, giving him a reassuring smile. She wasn't sure how much of the battle he would remember. "She's perfectly fine."Her father's head rolled to the side a bit as he released a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank the Moon Goddess," he said. "I w

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 145: A Night in the Healing Center

Ellie Watching the healers work to bring her father back from the dead was like watching a dream for Ellie. She stood there with Michaela in her arms, River's hand on her shoulder, thinking none of this could be happening, that it had to be a dream. But it wasn't. It was real. Her daughter had really been ripped from her bed, and now, the same people who were responsible for taking her child from her may have succeeded in taking her dad.Ellie couldn't imagine what her life would be like without her father in it. For as long as she could remember, he'd been there for her. Like a rock, like the brick wall she needed to hold her up anytime she felt like she couldn't stand on her own, he was always there. Even though she had River now, it wasn't the same. No matter how old a person got, they always needed a parent. But if Michael died, she wouldn't have any parents at all. She'd be an orphan. While she could imagine that her father would be happy to finally be reunited with her mother,

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 144: Alpha Emergency

RiverSeeing Ellie fighting all of those rogues by herself was enough to make River kick himself into a gear he didn't even know that he had. But when he saw his wife carrying his daughter away to safety, he knew that everything was going to be all right, especially since the rogues were grossly outnumbered. There was just the matter of making them pay for the horrendous atrocities they had committed. Not only had they set the village event center on fire, which may have already spread to other buildings, but they'd also violated his home, stolen his daughter, and taken her off in the middle of the night.None of these wolves were walking away from this fight. Not even the huge male that was bearing down on him now.River didn't care that the male seemed to be twice his size. With the anger boiling inside of him from everything he'd seen, River lowered himself to the ground and waited for the wolf to come at him. When the large wolf's teeth snapped at him, River dodged to the side and

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 143: Saving Michaela

EllieThe fact that she'd jumped right over the Omega's head would buy her some time, but only a matter of seconds. He would turn around and be right after her. So… Ellie had to make those moments count. She needed to head right for the female holding her baby and attack before she had the chance to register what was happening.Ellie landed hard on the ground from her leap and ignored the searing pain that shot up her right front paw. She continued to run, registering the look of fear in the female's eyes. It was only there for a split second, but it was there long enough for Ellie to know that she had the upper hand. She aimed low, darting around for the back of the female, away from her baby. She managed to sink her teeth into the female's leg, causing her to yelp. When she did so, she had to let go of the baby blanket. Michaela tumbled to the ground, but it wasn't much of a drop. Still, the baby screamed in fear and possibly a bit of pain. Ellie considered her chances of grabbing h

  • The Last Luna   Chapter 142: Closing In

RiverLeaving the fire to run out into the night, searching for his daughter was enough to make River's heart catch in his throat. How was it possible that someone had taken his baby from her warm bed in the middle of the night? As he tore through the forest, running in the direction his wife told him she was tracking the culprits in, he tried not to think about the fact that he'd been suspecting something like this in the back of his mind for some time. Ever since the rogues started getting close to the village, he'd been wondering if they'd try a stunt like this. If he'd been able to put the pieces of the puzzle together, if he'd thought it was truly possible that they'd try to take his daughter, he would've been more vigilant. Now, he was running as fast as he could, praying that Ellie or someone else saw them soon.If they found them, they would stop them. They just had to find them."River! I see them!"Ellie's voice in his head gave him hope. River's breath stuttered. "Where?" h
