Heli’s Point of View

“Just one chance,” I plead, only to have Akiro give me a blank look. My shoulders hunched, head hanging low in dismay.

“I have already told you not to engage with it. It’s better to ignore the rumors than to address them. No matter what we say, they’ll still come up with their own ideas about us. We’ll just waste our time and energy.”

I scowled, clenching my fists that were stuffed inside my pocket. “I hate how they keep on talking about you as if you weren’t there. Aren’t you bothered by it?”

Akiro shrugged. “I’ve been dealing with this kind of thing since I was a first-year student. Time just made me used to it, aside from how I just learned to ignore it.”

His response didn’t soothe me at all. It just made me even more mad.

He seemed to know what I was thinking as he shook his head, chuckling a bit before he gently nudged my arm. “Don’t worry about it, Heli. It doesn’t bother me at all. Besides, it wasn’t negative, you said. They just can’t seem to wrap it in t

Akiro’s Point of View“Surprise, brother?”Despite my initial fear and shock of suddenly floating in the air, I still managed to clearly hear what that guy standing a few meters away from us said. I couldn’t look at the guy’s face from where I was; I could only see his figure.Brother? Heli’s brother? Another vampire? Another prince? What is he doing here?“What the fuck are you doing here?” Heli snarled at the guy, conveying out loud what I was thinking. His jaw was clenched, and his red eyes were glowing. “And cut this shit right now! Bring my mate down!”It was only when Heli said it that I was reminded of my current predicament. My heart raced so fast against my chest, my eyes scrambling around to look for somewhere to hold on. My arms and feet were flailing uselessly, knowing fully well it wouldn’t do anything against this invisible force that floats me.I wasn’t that far from the ground, but it freaks me out to be floating in the air out of nowhere. There’s nothing tied to my bo

Heli’s Point of ViewIf looks could actually kill, Mother would only have five sons right now instead of six. Unfortunately, I don’t have that ability, nor do I know anyone who has it because I would pay them lots of gold if it meant they could rid me of this fucking bastard I called my brother.“— such a headache. If it weren’t for our mother, your mate would probably have twenty children—”Heldrix couldn’t finish whatever he wanted to say when ice creeped towards his mouth, covering it and stopping him from whatever bullshit he was about to spout. If it was up to me, I’d keep it permanently shut. But I know Akiro won’t approve of it.Akiro’s eyes widened at the same time Heldrix shot me an exasperated look. “Heli!” Akiro yelled at me, his eyes sharp. “Remove that right now before anyone else sees it!”I wanted to tell him that there’s no one else who comes here in this abandoned place, which is why this is where he decided to take us. But seeing the glare he’s giving me right now,

Akiro’s Point of View“You haven’t seen your brother for months already. Go with him and don’t follow me around,” I said to a frowning Heli.“I prefer being with you to this bastard,” he replied.Heldrix gasped, clutching the part of his chest where his heart was. He looked at his brother as if Heli betrayed him. The look of pain in his eyes would’ve been believable if it weren’t for the exaggerated way he spoke.“I’m Mother and Father’s son! I am no one else's child! How dare you call me a bastard?” he exclaimed. But Heli didn’t even spare him a glance. He just rolled his eyes before he spoke to me again.“Don’t worry about that guy. He’ll be fine. It’s his fault for being so stupid that his own wife threw him out while she was pregnant.”“I take offense to that.”“It wasn’t a compliment to begin with.”Before Heldrix could retaliate, I interrupted the upcoming bickering that would start. “I’m not asking you to stay, Heli. • The Last Chosen Mate   Chapter 26: Disappeared

Heli’s Point of ViewI’ll freeze Divine once I see her again. If it wasn’t for her, I'd be following my mate around like I usually do for the past months. But here I am in the abandoned house, forced to spend the time Akiro’s not around with my fucking annoying brother. “I can’t believe I got to see the day you sulk because your mate isn’t around,” Heldrix said, then he laughed loudly. I could feel a pinprick of irritation rising up to my head as he continued to laugh.“I’ll tell Divine about what you did a month before you learned she’s your mate.”Almost immediately, the annoying laughter stopped. Heldrix’ eyes were wide as he looked at me, a look of utter betrayal could be seen on those red orbs.I internally rolled my eyes. This man is just so dramatic. I really can’t stand him when he’s like this. “You wouldn’t,” he gasped.I shot him my most deadpan look. “Try me, brother.”“I will tell Akiro all about your sex life!”I glared at him, but then I immediately smoothed it out. “A

Akiro’s Point of ViewMy phone rang once again and when it ended a few seconds later, it lit up, which meant there was another message. I ignored it again like I'd been doing for the past twenty minutes. It seemed Heli knew I wasn’t at campus today if he was calling me non-stop. He always calls me during my vacant and lunch time, so when I didn’t answer or reply to any of his messages and calls, it must’ve worried him. But I really couldn’t bring myself to face anyone right now. My mind’s still reeling from the boy’s words earlier. It kept on playing over and over my head and all I could do was listen to it. I thought things would be fine when people found out I’m gay, because almost everyone at our university is open-minded and is part of the community, but it turns out there’s still a few people who hold onto the belief that being a homosexual is a sin. I never thought I’d be subjected to one of the homophobic’s slurs and insults. I prepared myself to hear those words even thoug

  • The Last Chosen Mate   Chapter 28: Birthday

Heli’s Point of View“I think you should talk to my grandparents next week.”I stopped on my track out of surprise. I turned to Akiro, raising an eyebrow at him. “What makes you suddenly think of that?”“Well...” He trailed off. “My birthday is in six weeks, and they were planning to throw a small celebration for me. I’ll invite my closest friends, and I want them to meet you. I don’t want my grandparents to be surprised that I invited you, so I decided it would be better if you'd try to be on their good side before my birthday comes. Is that alright?”I wanted to tell him I really don’t care about his grandparents and that I don’t want to act so nice just to get on their good side. But I don’t want him to get mad and disappointed at me, not when he seemed so excited at the prospect of introducing me to his closest friends. So I swallowed the urge to tell him it wasn’t alright and instead, smiled at him. The smile that makes him blush even though he already saw it multiple times.“Yes

  • The Last Chosen Mate   Chapter 29: Lunch

Akiro’s Point of ViewAfter a few days of us preparing and rehearsing for Heli’s upcoming talk with my grandparents, the day had finally come. I met with Heli at the abandoned house where he went after buying the tea set he would give to my grandparents. Heldrix returned to their world the other day, so Heli was the only one I saw there when I arrived. He was wearing a simple black polo shirt and faded jeans. The shirt highlights his paleness and his brown eyes, which he always changed into whenever there were other people around us. He looked devastatingly handsome. This is so freaking unfair! He didn’t even look like he had prepared his outfit for this!“Hi,” he greeted me warmly with a small smile on his face. “Is it time?”I shook my thoughts away as I focused on Heli. Grinning playfully at him, I asked, “If you’re ready. Grandma will be done with lunch soon.”He nodded.I knew for sure he was not nervous. He didn’t tell me about it, but I know he doesn’t like my grandparents as

  • The Last Chosen Mate   Chapter 30: Concession

Heli’s Point of View I am the fifth prince of Regia Solaria, the youngest child of Vladimir Hath and Camilla Hera Lancaster, and the most powerful ice-wielder in Eldritch. I am handsome, charismatic, rich, intelligent, strong— every positive compliment there is, I am that. Most of all, I am brave. So why the fuck am I feeling nervous while sitting in front of two old human beings? Why do I have the urge to fidget like a goddamn schoolgirl who was facing their crush? They were sitting on the couch across from where I am. Sitting side-by-side with the old woman’s arms crossed against her chest and the old man sitting ramrod straight. They’re both glaring at me, along with a look of barely hidden contempt and distaste. I cleared my throat. “Can... I will explain to you what I meant when I said the one who... killed Aki’s parents wasn't from our kingdom?” Their eyes turned sharper, the contempt in them darkening even more at the mention of Akiro’s parents. “Yes. Give us yo

Third Person’s Point of ViewAkiro smiled as he continued staring at his sleeping mate. They’re cuddled in their bed with Heli’s arms wrapped tightly around Akiro’s waist. He couldn’t pull away because the vampire’s hold was tight even while sleeping, so he was left with no choice but to remain lying down on Heli’s arms. And Akiro is absolutely not complaining. It’s been a while since he stared at Heli’s face, and it felt like he'd forgotten some of the vampire’s features. So right now, all he did was to commit every detail of Heli’s face to his memory all over again.Akiro was so preoccupied that he failed to notice that Heli cracked an eye open and immediately caught his mate staring intently at him. There was the look of— dare he say— fondness and admiration in Akiro’s eyes that made Heli’s heart flutter. He took advantage of his mate’s obliviousness. He shamelessly stared back, enjoying the sight of Akiro’s morning look that he had been secretly cataloguing inside his mind. Even w

Third Person’s Point of View“Work, huh?” Hendrix grinned at his youngest brother, who was sitting on the couch across from him, and was actually pouting as he glared at nowhere. But if anyone pointed it out, Heli would deny it and freeze their mouths until Heli decided to take pity on them.“Can you believe that? I can provide him with everything he needs and wants if he just tells me what it is, and then he can live comfortably. But no, he wants to work,” Heli said, disbelief clear in his voice. “He’s an independent man, Heli. He’s not used to just sitting idly in the corner while someone serves him everything on a silver platter. He wants to be able to stand on his own without relying on anyone,” Hadrien’s mate— Thaia— softly said.“Unlike the rest of us who had a similar lifestyle in our human lives and here, it’s quite easy to adjust. But for Akiro, who’s different from us in every possible way, it will be hard for him, and he might have more demands to make before he fully adju

  • The Last Chosen Mate   Chapter 58: Work

Third Person’s Point of View“You didn’t tell me the Emporium is for elite vampires! How am I supposed to pay for all of these?” Akiro whined upon seeing the prices of all the clothes and pants he picked, as well as the knitting materials and the newspapers he picked for his grandparents.Heli frowned at him. “You don’t need to pay for anything, Akiro, so you don’t have to worry about the price.”“But how about those knitting materials and newspapers I took for grandma and grandpa? This costs a lot!”“Like I said: you don’t have to worry about the price. We’re a royal family, Aki. Money is not a problem for us.”Akiro looked away, pouting. He doesn’t like that he’d owe Heli such a large amount of money, but it’s not like he has a choice. He has no money. He doesn’t have work where he can earn—An idea formed in his mind. He turned to face his mate, his expression giddy. “I’ll find a job!”Heli raised an eyebrow at him. “What?”“I’ll find a job so that I can save money, and then I can

Third Person’s Point of View“FUCK! AKIRO!”Heli extended his arms forward, reaching towards his mate who was getting pushed away by the crowd of vampires trying to get near the youngest prince. Akiro’s face dissolved into panic, his arms flailing around in an attempt to reach Heli’s hand. But with all the stronger vampires pushing him away, he wasn’t able to even touch the tip of Heli’s fingers.“Heli!” Akiro exclaimed, his heart beating frantically as their distance grew farther from each other. He could hear the prince yelling profanities and his name, but he couldn’t see him anymore from the crowd of taller vampires obscuring his view of the raging prince. It made him nervous not only because he was surrounded by vampires he didn’t know, but also because he was sure Heli might throw a fit if he got seriously injured by the stampede.Heli would surely blame himself if he saw Akiro get hurt, and Akiro would like to avoid that if possible. It wasn’t the vampire’s fault after all. He

Third Person’s Point of View“Are you sure you don’t want to bring some knights with you?”Heli turned to his mate, who, in turn, shook his head in response to the Queen. “Heli’s with me, Your Majesty. We’ll be fine.”The Queen looked like she was about to protest and continue to insist, but a large hand rested on her shoulder, effectively stopping her from talking. She looked over her shoulders and met her husband’s ruby-red eyes that were telling her to let the children go. She sighed.“Fine,” the Queen finally relented, seeing that even the King agreed with the boys. She looked sharply at her youngest son. “Take care of your mate, Helios. Eyes on him. You know how the town is.”Helios scowled. “Of course, I will. You don’t have to remind me of that.”“I’m just making sure.”Helios just huffed, then he turned to his mate. “Come on.”Akiro bowed politely to the King and Queen, then he hugged his grandparents. “We won’t take long.”The Queen knows it would be Akiro’s first time to lea

  • The Last Chosen Mate   Chapter 55: Clingy

Heli’s Point of ViewI sighed deeply when I saw the room was still empty after being inside the bathroom for nearly half an hour already. I plopped myself on my bed, staring at the door as if it would magically make my mate appear if I just stared hard enough. It was half an hour past the two hours he said, and he still hadn’t come back. I can’t help but feel restless about it. I’m aware I am being clingy, but can anyone blame me? My mate and I haven’t been on good terms for months, and I really missed just talking to him and enjoying his presence. It was a luxury I took for granted.Even though we talked already, it didn’t mean all our previous issues had been resolved. No. It would take more than one talk for us to resolve our issues and put it completely in the past. But right now, we’re alright, and I just want him beside me. When ten more minutes had passed, and he still didn’t return, I decided to go and check on him. But just as I stood up to get myself new clothes, the door o

  • The Last Chosen Mate   Chapter 54: Burning

Akiro’s Point of View“Listen, Aki. Don’t think this is your fault, alright? None of this is on you. I’m the very reason of your suffering, so it’s only right I do something for you,” Heli quickly began before I could even say something. “I... am selfish; I admit that. I know that. I couldn’t let you go even if I saw how much you’ve suffered from living here and away from your grandparents. So I thought of the only thing I can do to keep you here at the same time make you happy, and I don’t regret anything. All the risks that come with this decision? I wholeheartedly accepted it, and I had prepared myself for the worse. I admit that it made me nervous and afraid, not for myself but for my people. But when I saw you smile genuinely for the first time since I’ve brought you here, every doubt and fear in my heart disappeared instantly. Aki... it was worth it.”The sincerity in his eyes and voice made my chest hurt in a good way. It feels like his very soul was touching my heart. How can

  • The Last Chosen Mate   Chapter 53: Coerced

Heli’s Point of ViewIt was worth it.It’s been a while since the last time I’ve seen Akiro’s genuine smile. His smile that holds so much joy to the point of being contagious...I wanted to slap myself for taking that away— for being the reason he slowly lost that beautiful smile of his that I loved. For being the reason why he withered to something I almost can’t recognise. It feels like a grave sin, taking the brightness out of Akiro’s life.So this plan that I collaborated with my parents, is worth it. Even if it means risking my life. That’s the least I could do. Besides, I trust our people here in the palace. They’ve been working here for longer than I’ve been living, maybe even longer than Hale’s life. I decided to go to the training room to blow off some steam. When I entered the room, I saw Hale practicing with the swords. He whirled around when I entered. And just as I was about to ask if I could join, he suddenly appeared in front of me, taking me by the collar of my vest a

  • The Last Chosen Mate   Chapter 52: Apology

Akiro’s Point of ViewI stared at the flowers spread out in the palace garden, admiring their beauty, then I zoned out once again. It’s been a frequent occurrence for the past weeks. I keep drifting in and out of life, as if someone’s pulling and pushing me to consciousness. I didn’t even know I was zoning out in the middle of a conversation. I just found out about it whenever any of my companions would shake me out of my thoughts.I feel bad whenever I unconsciously do it, but the others don't seem mad or offended. In fact, they even looked concerned, but I just kept brushing off their questions.Because really, what can I say that they don't know already? They know what I feel, but they can’t do anything about it, right? They can’t help me. Their false placation doesn’t help anymore in easing the pain in my chest. No reassurances that they will help me adjust to this life or that I have someone who still cares for me can make me feel better.Everyday, I feel like I’m withering away
