Ellis wanted to retreat but Logan and the two others stood behind her, effectively cutting off her escape route. The room had gone eerily silent as if they were waiting for something to happen.
Without warning, she felt two firm arms grasp her and suspend her in the air. She closed her eyes, mortification coloring her cheeks as she hoped the ground would open up and swallow her.
Why was she being treated like Simba from The Lion King? Sorry, she hadn't signed up for this. She'd long been an adult and being cradled and shown off like a newborn was the last thing she wanted with her life.
Apart from being the Empress of an alien solar system, that is.
She clutched at the arms that held her by her ribcage to make sure she wouldn't fall.
"Empress Ellis has arrived!" Logan's voice boomed. The room erupted into noise, the creatures banging the tables and shouting her name in unison.
When Logan set her back on her feet, Ellis scrambled over to Laurel's side. "What the hell just happened?" she whispered.
Laurel gestured towards an empty table and guided Ellis to the spot. Unused to sitting on the ground and dining, Ellis scratched the back of her neck and looked around the room. It seemed that the Emperor dined with his subjects.
At least he wasn't raising his nose and refusing to mingle with them. Laurel took a seat beside Ellis and leaned in to whisper. "You're the Empress according to our system. Your genetic structure is compatible with the Emperor, so he announced you in the room." She paused and looked at the nervousness in Ellis's face. "If you agree to marry Logan, you will be Empress. He's staking a claim on you because human women are precious in this solar system."
"This makes no sense." She looked around the room. "There is definitely a hierarchy here. Some people are sitting at a higher level than others. What is the social structure like?" she asked.
These were things she needed to know. Was she to compromise everything she stood for? What would that make her?
"Also, I can't be Empress," she informed Laurel.
The other blinked. "You have a strong personality and thoughts of your own. I heard you were going to be a lawyer, so you have a lot of knowledge of government policy and laws. You'd be perfect for the role," Laurel assured, thinking Ellis was scared of taking up such a responsibility.
"Civil Rights lawyer. I'm a liberal leftist in political opinion. Do you think taking part in the monarchy falls in line with my political ideology?" She wanted to cry.
Laurel remained silent. She didn't know what to say. "I'm sorry." She could only apologize.
Ellis was not sure how to respond to the situation. She was saved by a man who brought her food. "Empress, may I wash your hands and feet?" the man asked. Ellis looked on in surprise. This man looked like other Zotheans but his size was that of an average human male.
She looked towards Laurel for advice. The other nodded and Ellis smiled politely at the man. "Sure," she said. For now, she would follow the conventions. The man took her hands gently and dipped it into the bowl, taking care not to prick her with his claws.
She thanked him automatically and the room grew silent. She noticed immediately and stiffened. She looked around to see if she had committed a crime.
There was simply surprised.
"You just thanked a Koln." Ellis looked on in confusion. "The people are surprised because most people don't thank Kolns."
Ellis couldn't understand why until she did. "Are they... slaves?" she whispered.
Laurel pretended not to hear. "They have a system in the galaxy close to the omegaverse one we know about on Earth. The alphas are the biggest and strongest, possessing more dominant features and mentality, while the betas are comparatively subservient. They don't have omegas. In place of that, they have Kolns. They are submissive and" she pointed at the male's tail. "... have shorter tails."
She looked closely. Indeed, the tail was merely a small stub the size of a finger and nothing more. "Is this some sort of sign of dominance? Like men comparing their penises?"
Laurel nodded vehemently. "The longer the tail, the better fighter the male is."
"What? The tail grows every time they win a fight or something?" she asked, finding the whole thing bizarre.
"How is that possible?" Laurel teased gently.
'Well, none of this makes sense, so...'
"If they lose a fight, the victor demands a piece of the tail. So, you can imagine..."
Ellis wanted to scream. She yelped in horror. "They cut off a body part if they lose a fight? What kind of morbid and barbaric society is this?" she hissed. "And they have slaves too. This is against the rights of any being. Shaming them and oppressing them for the benefit of others. That is beyond something a mature and civilized society to stand for."
Her outrage was understandable.
"I was as outraged as you when I first came. But I don't have the power to do anything." She shrugged.
"You can't just brush it off! I can't have a slave waiting on me!" she protested.
"There's nothing you can do tonight." Laurel was calm. She looked to be around Ellis's age but her demeanor was more reserved. She gestured towards Ellis's plate. "Eat. You can fight for their rights and change the opinions of the masses when you are full."
The words were not meant sarcastically. Ellis sighed. She looked around to see that no other table had been served.
"The rest of them don't have food in front of them," she observed quietly.
"They won't get anything until you start anything. You're the chief guest tonight, they are waiting for you."
Ellis regarded the plate in front of her. The food looked delicious. From the lack of utensils, she could guess that she would have to treat it as an Indian restaurant. Eat using her fingers, it is. She put the first bite into her mouth and her eyes widened.
The food was good.
From the corner of her eyes, she could see the others bend down over their food and eat as well.
She could see that all the men ate only the meats. Hers and Laurel's seemed to have vegetables though.
"They're carnivores," Laurel whispered. "I tried feeding Dorian a vegetable and he gagged and puked for the next three days. I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you want revenge for something." Laurel looked very pleased."Was your attempt an experiment or petty revenge?" Ellis asked, just to be sure."A bit of both," Laurel admitted honestly. "Of course, Dorian wouldn't reprimand me. He ate it willingly." She had an evil smirk on her face. Ellis nodded, suddenly enlightened about this woman sitting beside her.Logan's eyes remained on Ellis as did the eyes of some of the other men in the room. Ellis found it hard to eat while she was stared at. Finally, she knew how animals in the zoo felt. The men couldn't use her fingers as deftly as the human females could because of their claws, so they poked holes into the pieces of meat and popped them into their mouths. It seemed those claws could double as toothpicks, how fascinating.
Ellis was quiet for the rest of the ceremony. She was led back to a strange room. She had to admit that she was tired of these strange rooms.Considering the situation, she went to sleep in a large, circular depression in the room lined with pillows of all sizes and colors. She had to say that it was well decorated and looked cozy. When she opened her eyes, she had to wonder why it was so easy for her to sleep. She stretched her body and rolled over onto her stomach. She peered over the edge of the depression and saw Logan sitting on the floor with his back against the wall on the other side of the room.Ellis ducked down immediately, not wanting him to see her alone. Without the presence of another person in the room, Ellis wasn't sure how to interact with him. It just seemed so... foreign to her."I won't hurt you," he said. His voice was husky and deep, quite pleasing to hear. She wondered if this was the little chip in her brain making his voice
She could spend hours browsing through all of this and not get tired. To her delight, a section of the library was dedicated to books on law and governance, with case files and newspapers in them. No, it would be too rude to ignore Logan and read through these. She forced herself to give it back to him and sit silently."I'm glad you like it," he said. "I asked for Laurel's advice. She said you would need a comfortable and fluffy chair on which you can read, so I ordered it. It should be in transit as we speak."Ellis gave a small smile. "Yes, a fluffy chair does help. May I ask why you have so many cushions in the room?" she asked."Dorian had to buy a lot of pillows when Laurel first came. She likes to sleep amongst them. She told me that you would like it too." He smiled at her, his eyes twinkling."And you don't like them?" she teased. Cats do love pillows, especially sleeping on them or tearing them apart.
She distracted herself from the conversation and asked the question that was plaguing her. "Why aren't there any windows?"She just had to ask."The planet is mostly rocky and cold. While Zotheans are immune to the conditions, other species find it hard to survive in such harsh conditions," he explained. "The city is built inside the mountains so that we are insulated from the cold outside."She tried to picture something from Interstellar and failed. "How cold is it outside?" she asked curiously."It averages from minus fourteen degrees Celcius to minus sixty degrees Celcius."Ellis nodded. So the weather conditions were like Antarctica on Earth. She imaged the Zotheans walking around like penguins and let out a giggle."Is it always so cold or is it winter right now?" she asked. She wanted to see the outside world without freezing to death."It's summer. The current weather report shows clear skies but minus
He stayed silent for as long as she played with his tail. In the end, he started to speak softly."I have waited all my life for you. I wish to ask you something..." he trailed off. "Can I court you?"Like in the Victorian era?She was intrigued by the man but fairly disgruntled about the world she had been brought to. Letting a man court her simply because he reminded her of a loved pet didn't mean she could overcome the circumstance that led her to this planet. Moreover, a traumatic one.But Logan was sweet and earnest. She understood why he cut off his cousin's tail and presented it to her. He wanted to woo her with it like cats bring their owners prey. She realized that she would like to get to know him better before judging him.He had done everything within his custom and beyond to make her feel happy and adored. How could she ignore that?"I don't know about courting, but I would like to get to know
"Ellis," she heard someone call her. In her sleepy state, she hummed and pushed her head deeper into the pillow. When her name was called again, she groaned and covered her head with another pillow. Something tickled er nose and she tried to turn her head to get rid of it. Unfortunately, it followed her.She cracked her eye open and saw the tip of Logan's tail had slipped under the pillow and was teasing her nose. She pulled the pillow away and saw Logan sitting up beside her. His eyes twinkled with mischief; he looked so playful that her morning crankiness melted away in an instant. She smiled at him and wanted to pat his head like she would a cat."Time to wake up already?""Yes!" Laurel said from behind her. Ellis turned around and saw her standing at the edge of the depression. She grinned at Ellis, careful not to show her teeth. "You two look very cozy. I'm almost sorry to tear you apart!" she said. Ellis blinked and let out a giggle of amusemen
"I have a feeling Zotheans don't take baths, so this is a privilege only humans have." She chuckled. Laurel nodded in approval."You really are highly intelligent and adaptable." She had wonder in her voice. "It's rather weird. They take dust baths," Laurel giggled.Logan smelled pretty good, so those must have worked."You let Logan court you." The words were said more as a statement. "Good on you.""Well, he said it was like dating. As a teenager, I always thought if I could date a man who had the soul of a cat, so...""Well. You like cats but usually, women aren't able to resist Zotheans. And Logan... he's a wonderful guy. If you take him as your mate, he'll make sure you get everything you want to make you happy.""I could see that he gets upset when he thinks I am dissatisfied," Ellis told her. "I was a little shocked by the whole slave thing.""Be careful about that," Laurel warned in a low voice. "
"Today, the special market will sit, so it's the best day to take you around," Logan said softly.Ellis peered around at the open market. Stalls littered the road, covered by tarps to protect from the weather. It seemed so much like a flea market that Ellis felt right at home. People flocked the stalls and bargained and she even recognized some of the alien species from the dinners.Ellis tried her best not to stare but did peek at the aliens often. No one recognized them and for that Ellis was thankful. When she looked back, she could see that the Koln had accumulated a lot of paper in his hands. She shrugged and kept looking. Logan took her closer to the stalls so that she could look and read the signs aloud to her and explained what they were."What is that?" she asked, pointing towards an item that Logan had skipped.Logan twitched. "A tail extender," he said, filled with embarrassment. "Guaranteed to extend the length a
