Aiden
She saunters off to the bathroom as I settle down at my desk. Picking up the phone, I call my father.
“About time, Aiden!” He snaps down the line. “Now why is Leighton here with Dom while you are nowhere to be seen?”
“Dad, chill. I brought one of the fighters back to my place for the night. And before you jump to any conclusions, no I did not sleep with her.”
Technically I did, but it wasn’t like I fucked her.
“I assume you are bringing her today.”
“We will be up sometime this afternoon. She isn’t awake yet.” I lie to him “Just don’t let Dom off this time. We can’t have him buying minors to fight.”
Bella had been more than right when she said my father had been taking it easy. It was one of the things that kept me up last night. I had replayed our conversation. But the only thing I could focus on was what she had said about my father and how he no longer appeared to care.
“You don’t need to tell me what to do, Aiden. I am your father.”
“But you have been taking it easy. The others are more important than the humans” I mutter back, listening to the shower run. “I will be up later.”
Hanging up, I make my way towards the other end of my apartment. The shower was running, but it didn’t sound like anyone was in it.
“Bella, are you okay?”
“I’m fine!” She snaps back
The door was open a little and I could just about make out the reflection of her back in the mirror.
It was red raw. Burn marks and other scars covered her entire back. New and old scabs covered recent wounds.
A lump appears in my throat. Immediate guilt washes over me. She was supposed to be my mate. Things like that should never have happened to her.
The shower switches off and I quietly make my way to my desk. I had to find a way to get her to talk about it.
Bella steps out of the bathroom. Dressed in one of my old tees and a pair of shorts. They hung off of her small frame. Her copper hair was soaking wet. She hadn’t had a shower so she must have dunked her hair in the basin.
“Feeling better?” I ask, hoping that she would just tell me something.
She nods her head. Sitting on the bed. She was determined to create distance between us. The complete opposite of what I wanted.
“We will be travelling later.”
“To the King?”
“Yes, so please don’t try anything.”
“You mean don’t try and escape.” Those golden orbs stare at me like she was looking into my soul. “So I am your prisoner?”
“No, but if you try anything, I will have to stop you!”
She rolls her eyes at me and shakes her head
“It’s true what they say about redheads then. Little firecrackers.” I murmur, turning my attention to my laptop.
“Darcy was nothing like me.” She shoots back.
“You’re sister?”
“She was a redhead too. Not the same as mine. She wouldn’t hurt a fly.”
I didn’t really know where to go with the information. She had told me something, but it almost felt like a trap.
“Hungry?” I mutter
“Not going to ask me about my sisters?”
“No”
“Why not?” She folds her arms over her chest, scowling
“Because it’s some sort of trap. You are trying to make me feel sorry for you. You think that if you give me a sob story, I’m just going to let you go.” The problem was, I did feel sorry for her, but it wasn’t what she wanted to hear.
The scowl deepens. I almost felt bad for calling her out on her plan. Surely others didn’t fall for the same bullshit.
“You are strange.” she mutters to herself
“How so?”
“You see things that the others don’t.”
“I am well aware of that.” I tell her, trying to keep my attention on the laptop in front of me. What I really wanted to do was look at her back. I wanted to ease the pain. She would be lying if she said that it wasn’t hurting. Or maybe she was just so used to it that she no longer felt pain.
The phone rings and I see Leighton’s name.
“Yes.”
“Your father is pissed that you are not here.” I could sense the smile as he spoke. For some reason, Leighton always found it amusing to wind my father up.
“I’ve spoken to him. We will be there in a bit.”
“Good because Dom is pissing me off. He can’t keep his fat mouth shut.”
“At least wait until we are there before killing him.”
Bella perks up at the mention of a kill. Her golden orbs studied me and I knew she was trying to listen in. I cut the call and the scowl turns into a frown.
“You’re going to kill him?” She mutters
“If that’s what father wants. It probably won’t be me. Leighton has first dibs.”
“First dibs?”
“You know, where someone calls it first.”
“I would never give my kill to another.”
She pulled her wet hair over her shoulder, slowly braiding it as she watched me.
Her eyes remain on me the entire time I’m working. She doesn’t move from her spot. She braids and rebraids her hair as if it was somehow bringing comfort to her.
The silence in the room was deafening. I was used to spending time alone here. But when I was sharing my room with another person, silence was the last thing I was expecting.
“Time to go.”
“You want me to wear this?”
“Or you can put on the other blood stained clothes. I would say this is more respectable even if it is too big for you.”
She pulls on her combat boots and quietly follows me out. I was expecting her to run. The moment that front door opened, I thought she was going to take off. It surprises me even more as she walks towards my car.
Bella gets into the passenger seat. She even pulls the belt around her without complaining.
“Will you at least say something?” I mutter as I start the car up. The silence was starting to piss me off.
“You saw it.”
“Saw what?” I had no idea what she was going on about.
“You saw my back. You saw it and you didn’t say anything.”
Fuck!
“I shouldn’t have looked. The bathroom door was open and I saw your back in the mirror. I’m sorry.”
“For what? For seeing it? Or for not saying anything?”
“Both.” I sigh
“I wanted you to see it.”
“You wanted me to see it? Why not just tell me about it?”
“Visuals are more impactful than words. Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Why didn’t you just tell me?”
“It’s ugly right? The burns, the scars. The permanently damaged skin.”
“Is that from fighting?”
“No. My father did it.”
BellaAiden keeps his eyes on the road. His jaw clenching and unclenching. He probably had a million questions. And yet, he kept his mouth shut. So much for him hating the silence.I don’t even know why I wanted him to see the scars. I just felt like he should know. I wanted him to know.“Your father did that to you?” He mutters after a few miles.I nod my head.He pulls the car off to the side, bringing us to a stop.“Why? Did you do something?”I stare into his strange grey eyes. I wish I knew what he was thinking. He was just so hard to read.“My father made me what I am.”“That includes beating you so much that you are scarred for life?”I shrug my shoulders at him. It was all I had ever known. The beatings were to make me stronger. The burns, to help me learn to withstand pain. Everything he did was to make me more resilient. To make me something that he couldn’t be. He had led me to believe it. He convinced me that I wanted it. Grace lost it when she found out a month ago. It
AidenI watch her as her eyes follow my father. Her brow creases into a frown.“Are you okay?”She nods her head and looks at my mother. “Could I use the bathroom?”“Sure, it’s just down the hall on the left.”I was going to follow her. As much as I was certain she wouldn’t try anything stupid, there was still a chance but my mother grabs hold of me.“She doesn’t know, does she?”“I don’t know what you are talking about.”“You’re her mate, Aiden. She is your mate.”“You don’t know what you are talking about.”“I am your mother. There is only one person that you have looked at like that. And there hasn’t been another one since Ivy. Why haven’t you told her?”“Because she’s not ready.”“You mean you’re not.”Maybe my mum was right. It has taken me years to get over Ivy’s death. She had sacrificed herself for me. Even though it had been years, I still wasn’t ready to accept another mate so easily.“You should tell your father. Before it’s too late.”“What does that mean?”She looks away
Bella“Will you just stop talking!” I snap. I was sick of the questions. Sick of him trying to make me out to be a victim.“I'm trying to help.”“I don’t need help!”“Your father really did a number on you, didn’t he?”He ignores my growling as he approaches me.“What did he tell you? That you couldn’t be friends with others? That everyone was an enemy? Because if you believe that your entire life, your life is going to be pretty shit.”He pulls off his shirt and tosses it into the laundry basket. He was going to hit me, just like my father did.My father did the same thing when he punished me. The shirt would come off and then he would pull the belt from his jeans. The difference was Aiden was not my father.“GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME!” I scream at him. “I am not your punch bag and if you try to touch me, I will claw your eyes out.”His eyes narrow and then widen in confusion, he looks down at his torso. “I’m just changing my shirt.”He pauses to look at me and silently crosses to th
AidenWhy the hell did he have to go and say that?!I glare at Leighton as Bella looks at both of us. Her golden eyes dance between us.“I don’t have a mate.” She mutters with a frown. “And I probably won’t.”“You never know what’s around the corner.” Leighton cocks a brow, a crooked smile appearing.Bella screws her face up. “Thanks for your concern, but even if I was mated. I wouldn’t want the man.”“Leighton, go make sure we have what we need in the truck!” I mumble. Giving him a warning look, daring him to say another word.“As you wish.” He gives me a nod and a smirk as he leaves.“I guess you haven’t told him.” Bella asks as she walks away.“I assumed you wouldn’t want me too, so I only shared the basics with him. But he is my Beta.”“You can tell him that I’m cursed.” She shrugs her shoulders and sits down on the bed like it was no big deal. “You might as well tell him that you have a monster living in your care.”She stares back at me with those golden orbs, like it was some s
BellaI watch from the window as they leave. They drive off without even looking up to see if I’m watching. I knew what they would find. I knew that Aiden would pick up the scents in my old bedroom and he would know that things had been a lot worse than what I had let on. The scarred back was nothing. An hour goes by before I check the door. I was surprised it wasn’t locked. But we had made a deal. I could at least stay here until there was news.Heading back to the window, I pull the chair over and make myself comfortable. Watching the people on the street below. The knock interrupts my thoughts. Halle doesn’t wait for permission to come in. She swans in, her raven hair fanned out over her shoulders.“Are you okay?” She beams at me.“Fine.”“Do you want to grab something to eat?”“No.”“Is that all you ever say? One word answers?”I flash my golden eyes in her direction and don’t say anything.“Geez, I’m just trying to be nice.” She folds her arms across her chest and pouts.Rolling
Trigger warning: Talk of past sexual abuse and suicideAidenI knew what to expect when she had nightmares, but nothing could prepare me for this. She had tried to kill my sister. But it was like she was in some kind of trance, trapped in a dream while she was awake. Why the hell had they been in bed together? If we hadn’t made it back when we did, Halle would likely be dead.Leighton glares at me as I try to reassure Bella. Bella keeps asking me what is wrong with her. It was obvious what it was, it was past trauma, but she wasn’t ready to hear that. Or ready to accept it.“Take Halle downstairs, make sure she is alright.” I snap as Halle rubs her throat and Leighton continues to glare at me.Bella starts pacing as I let go of her. She takes the same steps, back and forth along the carpet. Not quite making eye contact with me as she frowns.“Bella, you need to talk to me!” I demand as I grab her shoulders. She looks into my eyes. “I didn’t know.”“Nightmares?”She slowly bobs her he
BellaMore than forty eight hours had passed since I tried strangling Halle. Aiden didn’t mention it again. We hadn’t talked about my father either. It seemed that my confirmation of what my father had done to me was too much for him to handle. He left in the early morning only to return late evening to lay next to me and sleep. Leighton was put in charge of me instead. He didn’t speak either. He would mostly sit at the laptop, typing or reading. He wouldn’t look at me either. But maybe that was a good thing.I stick to my usual spot by the window and spot Aiden’s vehicle pulling up.“He’s back.” I mutterLeighton doesn’t speak. He closes the laptop and walks out of the room.A few moments later, he is standing outside with Aiden. Deep in conversation. Leighton gets in his van and drives off.Where was he going? Where had Aiden been?Aiden appears. His grey eyes settle on me. I knew he regretted saving me.“Have you eaten?”It was the same routine.I shake my head.“You need to eat!”
Bella“What did you say?” I mutter in disbeliefShe stares with wide grey eyes, “Shit, you didn’t know!”“How am I supposed to know that? I’m seventeen. I don’t even have my Wolf. How do you know that? I’m not even supposed to have a mate.”“Leighton told me.”“Leighton?”“I thought you knew. You spend the whole day and night in his room. It made sense after Leighton told me the news. I thought you guys would be doing stuff.”“You are wrong! I’m a Creedance. We don’t have mates.”She shrugs her shoulders at me and mumbles something about how it was obvious.“Obvious? Is Aiden going around telling everyone that we are mates?”“Noooo. Just Leighton and then Leighton told me because I kept asking questions.”“Why didn’t Aiden say anything to me?”“Because you keep spouting the stuff about being cursed. That you won’t have a mate and all that. How do you think he feels?”“You’re screwing with me, aren’t you? Some kind of game, to try and prevent me from running.”She shakes her head.“Thi
