**Laura’s POV**
I hear the door slam, my last and only line of hope extinguished. I wanted to tell Liam what happened. For some foolish reason, I believed he was the one soul I could go to for help. Instead of the warmth I once felt from his embrace, I was faced with the sharpened ice shards of his impaling words—striking what was left of my already shattered heart to complete nothingness.
I’m struggling to breathe—the pain—it’s too heavy. I can’t release a sob, for I do not have enough air in my lungs to exhale. The water released from my tear ducts obscures my vision, yet I am still making my way to my locker. With my scarf still in my hand, I did not bother to cover my neck. Why would I when the one person whose opinion I valued the most sees me as a tainted ungracious pest? I could feel scowling eyes, judging the very essence of my being. I swear I can hear their thoughts calling me every foul word in the dictionary, trash, tramp, slut, whore... the list is endless.
A sudden dizziness overtook me, and I grabbed the door of my open locker for support. I feel cold and weak—still struggling to breathe as this ache is slicing open old existing wounds, archiving itself amongst my past heartaches, further crippling my will to fight for normality and happiness.
I can’t do this; I must just go. Do I run? I can give it a shot; it is the only thing left to do. If I go now, I may have a head start. I rested my head on my hand as I began to tremble at the thought of Jerry fulfilling his promise. More tears streamed down my nose toward gravity’s pull. All of a sudden, I felt warm hands grabbing me, pulling me to a soft bosom.
“You fucks stop staring and get back to work!” It was Bethany’s voice; I never heard her so hostile, but I felt safe as she cradled me protectively. “Come, hun, let’s get you cleaned up and dressed; I’ve got your uniform,” she whispered and started guiding me to the ladies’ room.
As soon as we entered the cubicle, Bethany pulled down the lid of the toilet and made me sit. She locked the door and then turned her attention to me as she knelt before me at eye level. I continued to stare downward towards nothing. I felt her hands brushing my hair behind my ear. “Holy shit, Lau! What the hell happened?” she exclaimed in horror. I realised she saw how bad my neck was. I could only shake my head, replying softly, “I found someone new; it’s nothing.”
She remained quiet for a few moments, probably still gawking at my dirtied neck. “Come, let’s get you dressed,” she said sternly.
I looked at her and said, “I think I’m going to resign, Beth. Don’t waste your time on me while your reputation is still good. I’m only going to stain it.”
“Oh hush, you are not going anywhere! Now take off that top and lift those arms of yours,” she commanded as she readied my work shirt in her hands.
I did as she asked, and as soon as she witnessed the state of my body she gasped in pure horror. Now that more hours have passed the bruises have darkened especially closer to my breasts. “Oh my fuck, Lau! What fucking happened?!” she asked with a trembling voice.
I shook my head as I covered my face, and I began to weep helplessly in my hands. I felt Bethany wrapping me in her arms; she started rocking me as she stroked the back of my head.
“Shh shh, it’s okay, baby, I’m here for you,” she tenderly hushed, like a mother would, kissing my forehead and releasing a few tears of her own. “Please tell me what happened. Who’s the bastard that did this to you?”
“I can’t,” I mouthed, silently praying no one was here eavesdropping, ready to report to Jerry. She looked at me, concerned; I lifted my hand, pointing to the wall, then my eyes and ears. She immediately pulled out her phone, typed, and then showed me the screen.
You are being watched?
I nodded; Bethany cursed under her breath and typed frantically on her phone, then handed it to me.
Type here, who did this to you?!
I pointed to her, miming that she must keep her phone. I then took a breath and said with a broken voice, “It was consensual, all in the heat of the moment. I’m only upset because Liam is pissed I have a new boyfriend.”
Bethany is a sharp woman and played along, “That arsehole! Who is he to tell you who to date?! So who’s the lucky guy?”
“Jerry Wulfric, Jacob’s roommate,” I said, visibly trembling as I remembered waking up in his bed. I speedily buttoned up my shirt.
“Wow. How did you two realize there was chemistry?” she asked as she made notes on her phone.
“He invited me to his show last night and asked me out during his performance. I first declined, but on our way back, I fell asleep in the car,” I choked as I heard myself. The memory started to hinder my speech. Bethany’s eyes widened, releasing more tears. I finally mustered the strength to finish my last sentence. “Jerry was such a gentleman; he carried me to his room. When I woke up, I-I was taken aback by his tenderness and accepted him. Now Liam thinks I am a tramp,” I cried in a whisper.
Bethany looked absolutely traumatized; she held tightly onto me and silently cried with me. “Fuck him and screw the idea of you quitting. I’m not serving at the coffee bar today, so I’ll take the orders from your tables, you can just serve the food. If Keres appears later, I will tell him to go fuck himself.”
I managed to muster a small laugh; I knew Bethany was my friend but never dreamed she might be my salvation in a situation like this. “Don’t worry, babe, mama bear’s got your back; no one fucks with my bestie.”
“Thank you,” I lipped as my voice disappeared. I felt drained, but my friend managed to give a breath of life to my dying embers of hope. She helped me get ready and skilfully tied my scarf around my neck so that it looked like it was part of my black-and-white uniform. She also fixed my makeup and styled my semi-dried hair to masterfully cover my dreary face and shoulders.
“You have such thick, long hair, hun; use it to your advantage. You are gorgeous,” Beth hummed as she sprayed hairspray to keep it in place. I was amazed; I swear it’s as though that woman had a whole portable salon in her bag.
“Thanks, Beth,” I said shyly, then froze. “Wow, you truly worked a miracle today,” I gasped as I looked at myself in disbelief.
“Oh shush, it’s because I have a stunner of a model. Come, let’s get to work before sourpuss nags us,” she said with a wink and placed a supportive arm around my shoulders.
“Beth, about today, what you heard, please for now keep it between us. I beg you.”
She looked at me unsure; she was definitely having a battle within herself but sighed, “Fine, I’ll wait a week.” I gave her a grateful hug and we exited the bathroom together.
“Stay back here and take some breaths. I’ll get the orders for so long. Wait—maybe get a cloth and wipe all the tables; pretend to be busy until the orders are ready. We don’t want the boss to think you’re slacking.”
“Thanks, Beth, I will do that,” I said. She looked deep into my eyes, as though hesitating to leave me while at the same time trying to reassure me everything would be fine. She squeezed my hand and then dashed off to the waiting customers. I looked at the clock; it was half past twelve. I sighed; this meant I might leave after ten or whenever the bistro closes tonight. I better let Jerry know.
I took out my phone and dialled his number; it did not even ring once, and immediately I heard his voice. “Hello, my gem, I meant to call you earlier, but you seemed quite occupied with your bestie. How’s my sweetheart feeling? Is she missing her big bad wolf? Should I come teach your mean boss a lesson?”
I froze, and my chest became numb—Jerry was clearly showing off, reminding me that he had eyes and ears everywhere. I nearly started hyperventilating, but I took a deep breath and tried calming myself down. Relax, Laura, you have Beth who knows the truth; now just entertain this dick until you find a means to escape this mess. Once composed, I decided to further rub his ego, seeing he was in such a good mood.
“My eyes have finally been opened. I realised I need to be grateful to have you, who cares so much for me. I do miss my wolfie, and don’t worry, I feel better now.”
“Aww, my darling gem, do you truly mean that?” he hummed, pleased.
“Apart from my friend Beth, I realised I have you now too. I am sorry I took your kindness for granted and for hurting your feelings at the theatre, my wolf,” I spoke in the sweetest voice I could conjure.
“Oh fuck, you better speak to me like that when I come to collect you tonight,” he breathed hungrily. I swear I could already imagine the saliva collecting on his lips.
“I will, but only if you behave tonight,” I tried to playfully warn as I shivered.
“Your wish is my command, my temptress,” he husked.
“I also wanted to let you know I will be finishing—”
“Late? I know, sweetheart, but I am thrilled you are being such a good girl. I will come to fetch you once you are finished.”
“Thank you, my wolfie, I look forward to seeing you,” I said, fighting the urge to gag. I fucking hate him, but I need to learn to mask my feelings and look at the bigger picture. Keep the beast calm and figure out how to escape him whilst I still have some of my freedom.
“Bye, sweetheart, see you later,” he purred tenderly, then put the phone down.
I quickly checked the screen to make sure the call was dropped. To my relief, it was, and as I looked up, I paled. I saw Liam’s glowering face, scrutinizing me with utmost hatred. It looked like he was about to tackle me, but instead, he stormed past me, out of the bistro. I heard him getting in his car as he harshly slammed the door and spun its wheels whilst reversing out of the parking lot. Shit, I’m done for now. I guess I should forget about the kitchen, seeing that he thinks I am slacking off to talk to my new demented boyfriend.
**Jerry’s POV**I can’t wait to see her! It has been absolute torture without my gem. I do not know what has come over me. Why am I like this? Blackmailing my sweetheart was not how I planned things. I had been doing so well while preparing to make my move, but—when she held onto her arm, revealing her fated mark after the show, taunting us. Drud acted on his own, and I stupidly followed suit as our emotions became one. Fuck, the contract was to be used as a last resort when all else failed. I should have waited to win her trust! I scolded myself as I was angrily going through my thoughts and mixed emotions. Laura was like my drug, she had been gone from me for far too long and I needed my fix!The fated mark was nothing new to us; I was able to keep my angst intact as I had all my servants' eyes on Laura, making sure no stray mongrel approached her. He thought s-something happened t-that made me late, but as y-you are aware, it ended sour,” I stuttered as my tears flowed down my cheeks. I hit my limit for today as dizziness started to shroud me. I clumsily raised my hand to my forehead and slumped in my seat. There were odd barks outside, then whimpering before the ruckus died down.Jerry glared at me with his fierce eyes; they looked more red than anything else. “Never, ever accept a lift from anyone again! Only I am to take you to work from now on! I will not repeat myself, Laura; NO man is allowed to touch you! Everything you do and say, I will know, do you understand?” he snarled throatily in my face.“Y-yes, my w-wolf, I-I am yours,” I wept, failing to keep my composure. “No one is to touch what is mine,” he repeated menacingly. “I will only be true to you, I s-swear,” I
I stood for a few seconds, somewhat paralysed. I shunned myself and forced my knuckle to tap the door. It was a pathetic attempt, but he heard it."Yes?" Liam asked harshly, and I already regretted my decision."Hi Liam," I said as I sheepishly opened the door. He was hunched over his desk with work; my heart fluttered, but I instantly felt dread as I saw his angered expression. Although he appeared terrifying, he was still incredibly handsome. Dammit, Laura, get a grip!"What is it?" he snapped dismissively, still facing his paperwork."I-I am sorry to disturb you, but I need to talk to you about—""Laura, if it's to do with your role in the kitchen, there is nothing to discuss," he barked harshly without looking at me. I couldn't understand it, but him avoiding my existence really hurt. I entered the office like a terrified animal, visibly shaking like a leaf."Stay where you are; we need to make whatever it is you want brief. I'm in a rush." "Liam, it's about y-yesterday; it's not
**Liam's POV**It's now five to seven in the morning, the fifth time looking at my watch anxiously, while I am waiting for my employee. My fingernails in turn are jitterily striking the polished surface of my antique mahogany desk. All my emotions are jumbled-up fragments consisting of only excitement and dread. I can't wait to see her and finally have some alone time with her! Oh, but why can't I shake off this feeling of unease? Her serious expression yesterday, still very fresh in my mind's eye, has had me on edge up until now. I really hope nothing's wrong.Laura has been working at the Snug Bistro for five months as a waitress, but she is not just any regular employee, she is my fated, my beloved mate. Alas, she would not know this, because she is a human. What makes things worse, my mate is currently in a relationship with another. Oh, how I wish I'd met her first. I would have courted her like any mortal man would and let her love for me develop at a normal pace. I'd love and t
**Laura's POV**I can't believe it! Mr. Custos gave me such an awesome opportunity! I am so excited! He is such a sweet man; I must buy him a thank-you gift. I sang to myself as my heart beat with joy from these overwhelming emotions. Things are finally working out. Just don't screw this up, Laura Ash! I squealed to myself whilst, cleaning the counter."Someone seems to be in a good mood," said a male voice, ripping me from my thoughts."Morning Jacob, yup! I spoke to Mr. Custos, and in three days' time I am officially working in the kitchen," I proudly announced flashing a toothy grin."That's fantastic news! See I told you! Liam is a cool boss, he always opts to help his staff pursue their careers. Just like Sheryl, a month ago he sponsored her education so that she could become an accountant. That's just one of many examples.""He really is a good heart. I'm finally living the dream!" I laughed like a little girl when I thought of him. I don't know why, but when I spoke to Liam, ea
"What a fucking dick!" Bethany exclaimed in pure disgust and anger."Wow, I can't believe you stayed with him all those months. You should have told me, sweets. I could have helped you and been there for you when you needed someone to lean on," Jacob said, looking at me with sympathy."Thanks, guys, but really I am fine and happy it’s all over. On a positive note, I phoned some estate agents and Liam said I can take off tomorrow to view them.""What about tonight? You seriously not going to sleep there in the dirty ogre's lair?" Bethany asked anxiously while Jacob nodded with a worried expression."Where should I go? I don't have much of a choice; I'll be fine—""I don't think that's a good idea,’ Bethany interjected. “Oops, I see some customers at the coffee bar. I'll be back soon," she added, then rushed off."Come stay at my place," Jacob insisted. "I know Jerry won't mind and if he does, I'll kick him out," he laughed.I gave a grateful smile, but, I could not inconvenience my fri
Jacob was elated that I accepted his offer to stay with him. I personally think his excitement was mostly amplified by getting the chance to leave work early. We wasted no time and went straight to Michael's place. Luckily, a week ago, I made an excuse to clean my cupboards, allowing me to sneakily pack my things without raising suspicion. I also don't have much to pack, so it was super easy. I divided all my items from the things Michael had gifted me because I did not want to take anything that reminded me of him. He is the past, and that's where he needs to stay.So far everything fits perfectly in the trunk. Just as I retrieved my last box of items, Michael appeared from the shadows like a creature from a horror film. "You already found another man to leach off financially?" he hissed in a dangerous dark tone.Of course, I jumped at the sudden reveal, then responded in a somewhat calm voice, "Firstly, he is my friend, and secondly, I do not see why it should upset you so. I'm bein
So today was a bit of a depressing day. I viewed six apartments, but three of them were way out of my budget! The decent-priced ones had a roommate, but being with Michael for so long, I only wished for solitude. It was now half past three, and I was exhausted. Before I made my way back to Jacob and Jerry's place, I quickly headed to the shops and bought myself an ice cream.Once I reached the apartment and closed the door, I released a frustrated sigh. "Your ice cream can't be that bad?" asked a humoured voice.I got a fright; I was completely unaware Jerry would be here. "No, this was purchased to make my dreary day less disappointing," I said and tried to muster a laugh, attempting to hide my surprise."That bad, huh?" he asked lazily with his hands behind his head. He was sitting by the kitchen counter."You have no idea," I sighed, making my way to sit across from him, now giving my dripping frozen treat much-needed attention. **Liam’s POV**I’m sitting in my office waiting for Jacob. I summoned him because I needed to know what happened to Laura. I’m on edge and I know something was not right. I had felt it since last night at first joy followed by complete pleasure and bliss then after eleven, it was as though I was enveloped in absolute dread. I could not sleep at all and today an undeniable mixture of despair and terror invaded my heart. My mate was hurting and I needed answers, if not I will tear this whole place upside down like a fucking mindless animal. My wolf was ready to snap, Krait was overly quiet and Giaan tried to keep Ozouf calm. He was helping me as well, but I am not sure how much longer I could keep my composure.Jacob entered the office looking bitter, I have no idea what happened, but I fucking swear if he tried anything with her I am going to end him. I know he has a crush on her, but he always respected Laura. I was somewhat hesitant when she told me she was going to stay with him, bu
What is my purpose? Is it to forever feel unworthy and useless? Am I only intended to yearn for my passion, only to never see it through? I sobbed at these questions as my grief shrouded me with hopelessness. If only I had never met Michael, or if I had started working earlier, even though he disapproved of the idea, I might never have been in this fucked up situation. I am a complete emotional mess; my shower took longer than it should have, but I was somewhat able to gather what was left of my fragmented soundness. I need to get to the bistro ASAP and find my happy place. I don’t know why, but there it always feels like my true home.I dried myself and applied lotion over my marks of shame, hoping the sweet smell and its medicinal properties would magically heal them. I tied my wet hair into a bun, and put on makeup to try to hide my melancholy face as well as the bruises on my neck. Once finished, I carefully opened the door and peeked out, making sure Jerry was nowhere to be see
I was shocked; he sounded so upset. Was it because I went to Jerry's show without inviting him? It wasn't my place to do so, but I can't dwell on petty shit. Wait— could it be because I slept in Jerry's bed? Shit, I need to get cleaned up and rush to work and tell him everything. I started running at that thought. Once I reached the apartment, the door swung open, revealing Jerry with his unnerving stare. The last fucking person I wanted to see. "Sweetheart, what a surprise; finished work already?" he asked lazily as he leaned against the doorpost, gazing at me amorously. My rage got the better of me, and I aggressively approached him with my finger in his face. I asked with absolute malice while tears ran down my cheeks, "What the fuck did you do to me yesterday?!" With the speed of a viper, Jerry seized my hand and dragged me into the building, quickly shutting the door. I yelped, trying to shove him away from me, though he speedily trapped me in his arms. As I took a breath to
Jerry exhibited a deadly sneer, then casually fitted the microphone to its stand. "What's your name, Cruella—I mean Cinderella?" he scoffed, then grabbed a glass of water, taking a much-needed sip. I realised this was to quench his lethal tongue, his eyes looked determined, readying himself for the verbal battle ahead."Amber," she shouted with the utmost pride."Do you suffer from any medical conditions?""No, why?""You drunk, princess?" Jerry asked with a straight face, as the audience murmured a laugh."She's not, go fuck yourself," shouted a pissed-off voice I did not want to hear."Now that you interrupted me, I presume you're the boyfriend?" Jerry asked displaying a calm and relaxed demeanour."Yeah," Michael shouted proudly, placing his arm around Amber protectively."I would suggest you take her on dates where she can process her surroundings better. She seems a bit slow," Jerry said, showing a scornful expression. Some people laughed while others clapped."That's the asshole
