Forgiveness is equivalent to freedom “Are you going to do it or keep staring at your phone like he’s going to materialize from it?” Star jumped slightly at the intrusion and turned her chair to glare at Ray. “You nearly gave me a heart attack.” The man in question was unmoved by her heated glare and simply crossed his arms and legs as he leaned against the door frame. “Alas, you’re still here. Don’t change the subject.” Realizing arguing with him wouldn’t be worth it, she dropped her gaze to the phone once again. “I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to hear from me.” She winced, remembering how effortlessly she lied to his face. “I doubt that, he’s been checking up on you since we found you.” Star’s eyebrows pulled together. “Wait, how did you know who I wanted to call?” Ray’s lips lifted into a smirk. “I’d love to come off as mysterious and all-knowing, but I was just with Max. He could feel your distress and told me you’ve been overthinking calling the Sheriff.” Star’s lips p
A dreamy nightmare The silk bodice clung to her body like a second skin while the stark white ruffle skirt floated around. The nude heels she wore kept the flawless dress from dragging on the ground, but Star didn’t care a bit, her eyes were focused on the handsome man before her. Max’s navy tuxedo gripped his muscular arms, giving her a sneak peek of what lay beneath, his usual five 0’clock shadow was replaced by his more recent trimmed bearded look and she had to admit she liked it more. Max beamed at her as she walked down the paved pathway, the smell of fresh daisies filled her senses, but Star longed for Max’s signature lemon and eucalyptus scent instead. The path to him seemed to grow longer with every step she took. “Relax, you’ll get there.” His sudden appearance beside her almost made her stumble, but she caught herself before she could make a fool out of herself. “Where did you come from?” She looked up at him, wide-eyed, but all he did was smile. “Wherever you wanted m
Meeting the familyMax clutched four lone roses in his hands as he walked slowly beside Star, even with the crutches, the weight she put on her legs was painful, but she ignored the pain and looked ahead at the four gravestones in the distance.“Jeremy had them buried beside my mom, everything happened so fast, I never even gave them a proper funeral.” She whispered when they came to a halt in front of the identical headstones. Thick, well-kept grass covered the area and even after seeing their name on the stone, she found it hard to believe her family was buried beneath her.“That was nice of him,” Max observed, helping her to kneel down before them to place the flowers in front of each headstone.
Weary thoughts and hidden truthsStar swiped her spoon back and forth in the tiny tub of vanilla chocolate chip ice cream, too lost in her self-deprecating thoughts to comprehend that it was melting.Max cleared his throat, “Do- do you wanna go?” Star’s eyes shot up at his uncertain tone, she forgot he was there.“Yeah, sure.” She stood up from her seat before he could even put down his spoon and his jaw dropped. Max scrambled to catch up with her outside and when he finally pushed open the glass door, he noticed she was on the phone.“Yeah, that’s fine, see you tomorrow.” Bidding the person goodbye, she dropped the call and turned to face Max without meeting his
Pushing backStar pushed her legs to carry her despite the screaming pain in her legs and stern orders from Doctor Snowman to give it a rest, she had to prove a point and she wouldn’t give up till she did.“Star!” Dr. Snowman approached her with an angry look on her face the moment she reached the end of the guide bars, “Are you trying to hurt yourself!” She guided her into the wheelchair.“I had to prove to myself that I could do it.” she glanced at Ray and Landon who were looking on with worry.“Star… You’re one of my most determined patients, but I have to caution you against pushing yourself too far and fast. Pulling a muscle could be the determin
Fear and favor Max walked through the packhouse on his way to the training grounds, but unlike every other morning when he did so, his pack members didn’t greet him with smiles and enthusiasm, they looked almost gloomy. Max couldn’t put his finger on it, but it was almost as if the pack was in mourning. “What’s up with everyone?” He muttered to himself when he stepped out the back door. They went about their day slower than usual which confused Max. When Max reached the training grounds he observed the way they sluggishly sparred, no one seemed into the training as he was used to and he approached Landon, knowing his Beta would have answers. “What’s going on?” He asked seriously, flooding his arms across his chest with his eyes narrowed. “Word spreads fast in packs, Max. You should know that.” Landon didn’t spare him a glance. “What word?” His frown deepened. “You didn’t spend the night at home last night.” Max froze, he knew people would notice, he didn’t however expect t
Progress and a smile“Did you enjoy today’s session?” Max asked when Star climbed into the range rover with a little effort, it took a lot for him not to help her, but she seemed to be getting more and more annoyed at him every time he tried to help her with little things.“Yeah, I really needed that, I didn’t realize how much.” She smiled sweetly and laid her head back against the rest with her eyes closed and Max found himself entranced. She looked happier than he’d seen her in days, there was a sense of peace that surrounded her which made his heart swell with love.“Are we waiting for someone?” She opened her eyes and looked around with confusion when she realized he still hadn’t started the engine and luckily fo
On her own two feet “She literally hasn’t slowed down since she got the idea in her head and it’s scary.” Max all but whined to his best friends as they watched Star rush around. When she proposed the idea of a housewarming he readily agreed to the idea simply because she asked, not knowing how he’d come to regret it. Star didn’t seem to care much about slowing down and Max fought with his instinct to protect her- even from herself, in an effort to give her some of the independence she craved, but he still worried incessantly that she would hurt or overexert herself. “I think she’s doing great, it's pretty impressive what she’s been able to achieve while still on crutches and maybe this is what she needs to get back into the swing of things.” Landon sided with her, much to Max’s annoyance. “I hate how everyone takes her side,” Max grumbled, folding his arms over his chest like a petulant child. “You do too, honey.” Donna supplied like it was yesterday’s news and Max’s scowl de
