Chapter 2

Author: Grass Heart
"Caroline, why are you calling again?" Derrick Glover's familiar voice came through the line.

He continued, "Emery already told me everything! Don't be so petty. It's just one trip.

"Why make up nonsense about your house catching fire? That's bad luck! Young people need to stop messing around with stuff like that!"

Derrick was one of Emery's closest friends from the fire department and a die-hard supporter of Emery's first marriage to Sasha Woods. To him and others like him, I was just the wicked woman who had come between their "fairytale love story."

Since Sasha suddenly returned to town, Emery had been spending less and less time at home. Even when Luna had a high fever a few nights ago, he still refused to leave Sasha's place, where he was staying.

Emery had gone out of his way to make me look like a nagging, controlling wife. In my past life, I always wondered why his friends hated me despite how well I treated them—cooking meals, buying groceries, and giving them all the space they needed to hang out.

Yet, his circle always carried this unspoken hostility toward me. This time, I did not waste time arguing with Derrick. I hung up and immediately called a more distant fire station. I begged for their urgent assistance.

The fire continued to spread uncontrollably. I could hear the faint sound of furniture cracking and exploding inside the house.

Paula came running toward me. Her face was full of panic. "Caroline, thank goodness you're here! What are we going to do?"

"Luna and Liam are still napping. I'm scared that waking them up suddenly will frighten them, but leaving them asleep is just as bad!"

I followed her gaze to the flames, which had started in the north wing of the house—right where the kids' bedrooms were. To make matters worse, there was a strong wind today, causing the fire to dance wildly in every direction.

My anxiety soared. Although Luna and Liam were Emery and Sasha's children, Sasha abandoned them shortly after giving birth and disappeared without a trace.

She only resurfaced recently, claiming she had been battling a severe illness and did not want to burden Emery and the kids. Emery had been heartbroken when she handed him an old medical document as proof. He blamed himself for not being there for her and swore he would do everything he could to make it up to her.

I was the outsider in this tangled web of emotions—the "bitter wife" who had simply filled in for five years while Sasha was gone. However, my bond with Luna and Liam went deeper than that.

I had poured my heart into raising them, not just because I loved Emery, but because the countless nights spent caring for them had forged an unbreakable connection. Though the kids knew I was not their birth mother, I could feel their love and trust in me.

That was exactly why I could not just stand here waiting. I scanned my surroundings anxiously. The fire trucks still had not arrived, and time was slipping away.

In my past life, Emery had used his training to rescue them. Now, I tried to recall every move he had made.

I glanced up at the neighbor's balcony. Our apartment was on the fifth floor, but years of climbing practice had made scaling that height manageable for me.

I grabbed a large cleaning bucket from the building's maintenance area, filled it with water, and soaked myself from head to toe. Then, I removed my silk scarf, dampened it, and tied it around my nose and mouth.

After borrowing a thick rope from the maintenance crew, I slung it across my body. Seeing my intentions, the neighbors began to object.

One shouted, "Caroline, you can't do this! It's too dangerous!"

"Yeah, just wait a bit longer. The fire department will be here any minute!"

"Let me go instead! You shouldn't risk your life like this."

Hearing their worried voices, I clenched my teeth. Emery might be out there enjoying his life right now, but Luna and Liam were my responsibility. They called me "Mom," and I could not let them down.

I smiled gently and shook my head. Without hesitation, I began climbing the building while using the iron window frames and air conditioning units for support.

As I steadied myself on a third-floor unit, a sudden explosion erupted above me. Thick, black smoke billowed out. The air around me was scorching.

I instinctively recoiled as burning debris flew past my face. Furniture fragments crashed to the ground with a loud thud, causing the crowd below to scatter in fear.

"Caroline, come down now! Don't go any higher!"

"You're important too. Please, don't risk your life like this!"

Their pleas echoed below, but I simply smiled in response. I took a deep breath to steel myself before pressing forward.

Soon, I finally reached the fourth-floor window. One more step, and I would be at our balcony. I reached out for the metal railing but jerked my hand back instantly as searing heat burned my skin.

Within seconds, blisters formed on my palms. A neighbor noticed and attempted to throw a pair of gloves at me, but the distance was too great.

Determined, I bit down on the pain and gripped the railing tightly. Ignoring the stabbing heat, I used my momentum to leap onto the balcony and climb inside. Cheers erupted from the crowd below as they celebrated my small victory.

I rushed into the bedroom, desperately trying to wake Luna and Liam. Yet, no matter how hard I shook them, they would not stir. With no other option, I tied the rope tightly around my body. I secured one child to my front and the other to my back.As I prepared to run back to the balcony, a crystal chandelier came crashing down, narrowly missing the three of us by a second. I froze for a moment, catching my breath, before pushing forward. Behind me, I could hear the chaotic sounds of furniture collapsing and explosions echoing through the apartment.Time was running out. If I did not get out in a matter of seconds, the heat blast could send us all hurtling from the building. When I reached the balcony, I was startled by the voices calling from below. The fire department had arrived while I was inside and had already set up an emergency rescue cushion."Jump! Hurry, jump down!"Relief washed over me. Tightening my grip on the children, I threw myself off the balcony without hesitat

The doctor explained, "We found a significant amount of sedatives in the children's systems. If it was just for a nap, this dosage is highly suspicious. We have already contacted the police to investigate possible child endangerment."With a brief nod, the doctor left, leaving me frozen in shock. Memories of my previous life came rushing back. Emery had rescued the kids and immediately rushed off to find Sasha on that island. I had stayed by Luna and Liam's side all night, wondering why they had slept so long when their naps usually lasted only two hours. I had dismissed it back then, thinking they had been in shock from the fire, but now I knew there was more to it.This time, I was determined to uncover the truth. Just then, my phone rang."Caroline! What the hell were you doing with the kids? Did you set that fire on purpose?" Emery's furious voice boomed through the line.He continued, "Great! Now everyone's calling you some 'hero mom' while I'm the 'deadbeat dad'. Are you ha

In the live stream, a person wearing a duck mask ranted, accusing me of staging the entire fire out of jealousy. He claimed I had sedated the children and endangered their lives just to play the victim and gain sympathy. The comment section was buzzing, with some viewers already swayed by his lies. One wrote, "I knew it! How could she be so calm when running into that fire? She must've set it herself to control the flames!""Exactly! There's a fire station three miles from her place. How did the fire escalate so fast that they couldn't wait for help?"Another commented, "She just wanted attention. This is what happens when people will do anything to go viral. And of course, they aren't her biological kids. It's no wonder that she could use them like that!"I sighed in exasperation, easily recognizing the voice and behavior. It was obviously Derrick trying to stir up trouble for clout.Without wasting time, I blocked and reported the stream, then filed a formal complaint with his e

The police took notes while facing Sasha. Still sniffling, she mumbled with an air of innocence, "I wasn't doing anything this morning. I was just at home waiting for Emery to pick me up for our island vacation."Her eyes flickered nervously as she spoke, which betrayed her unease."You're saying you were home the entire morning until noon and didn't leave the house?" the officer pressed."Yes," she replied quickly."If that's the case, do you admit that the person in this footage is you?" The officer brought up the surveillance video again.Sasha's face paled as she watched the clip. Her panic was evident. She glanced at Emery while silently pleading for help.Emery's expression wavered. He recognized her in the footage but was desperate to hear otherwise. "Sasha, is that you? Just tell me it isn't, and I'll believe you!" His grip on her arm tightened involuntarily."Emery, I don't know how this happened!" she cried dramatically. "You know me—I'm afraid of loud noises, let alon

A crowd of onlookers began to gather around us. Someone asked, "Isn't that the 'hero mom'? I saw her video trending online!"One replied, "Yeah, me too! I heard those aren't even her biological kids, but she still risked her life to save them!""Wait, really? I also heard that she staged the whole thing. Look at that woman crying. She must be the real mom!"Hearing the murmurs, Sasha took the opportunity to cry even louder, making sure everyone heard her. She wailed, "How could you be so cruel, Caroline?"I just wanted to see my children, but you wouldn't let me! And then, when no one else was home, you set the fire to burn them alive! "You put on this whole show to rescue them, pretending to be a hero while covering up your crime. Someone, please tell me how could someone be so heartless?"Sasha dropped to her knees while sobbing theatrically. She begged for mercy while twisting the narrative to paint me as a monster. She shouted, "You have the nerve to call yourself a 'hero m

"I'm sorry. Please accept my condolences," the doctor said quietly as he stepped out of the intensive care unit, then walked away without another word.Sasha's wails filled the corridor instantly. "My babies! My poor babies! You murderer! Give me back my children!"She lunged at me and tried to grab my clothes, but I instinctively stepped back. My mind was buzzing. I could still remember holding Luna and Liam earlier. I remembered feeling the warmth of their small bodies. And now, they were gone. They left this world without warning.I moved toward the door, wanting to see them one last time. However, Emery grabbed me by the arm and violently shoved me onto a chair."Caroline, you evil bitch! I'll kill you!" he roared and swung a fist at me.There was no time to dodge. I shut my eyes tightly, bracing for the impact, but the blow never came. When I opened my eyes, I saw that a police officer had intervened. He restrained Emery."Mr. Fike, calm down. If you can't control your emo

After that day, I never saw Emery again. Sasha's case caused a media storm due to its severity, and she was sentenced to death with immediate execution. Meanwhile, I was busy arranging a funeral for the two innocent children. In my previous life, Emery had managed to save them in time. This time, they could not escape their own mother's cruelty. On the day of the funeral, I stood before their graves with their favorite stuffed animals in my arms. I spoke softly to them. I prayed that they would be blessed with parents who truly loved them in their next lives."Caroline, you must hate me."I turned to see Emery. He had come to his children's funeral after all.The man standing before me looked unrecognizable. He was unkempt, and his clothes were hanging loosely on him.
