On Saturday morning, Amerie sat out on her deck, coffee in hand, watching Milo play in the yard. Amerie had gone back into town to explore the other shops a couple times. She’d even bought herself a new entertainment stand and taken the broken one to the dump. She had met a few more people, and everyone had been kind and welcoming. It was starting to feel like home.

Tonight, she was meeting Blaze and her sister at the bar, and she was somewhat surprised to find that she was excited. She smiled and sipped her coffee.

Milo ran up and dropped his ball at her feet. She proceeded to play a few rounds of fetch with him, until Milo halted halfway back to the deck. He whipped his head towards the woods and dropped the ball. His tail was straight and high. Amerie’s heart skipped a beat as she followed his gaze towards the line of trees closest to them. She saw something move and squinted. Milo whined and dipped his head just as the head of a white wolf became visible.

Amerie froze. She called for Milo but he sat down in the yard. The wolf didn’t step out into the clearing or make any other move. It stared into Amerie’s soul. Her breath hitched. The wolf was 500 yards away but it felt like they were face to face, and yet… she felt no fear. She swore she heard a whisper-

Her phone rang. She blinked and the wolf was gone. She was willing to write it off as a figment of her imagination due to not fully waking up yet, but Milo was still in the yard looking at the spot the wolf had been.

Her phone rang again. She shook her head and answered.

“Hey sweetie! How’s it going out there?” her mom asked.

Amerie squeezed her eyes shut and pinched the bridge of her nose. She did her best to sound cheerful. “Hey mom. Things are going pretty well. I picked up a new entertainment stand and explored the town a little bit. Going to the bar tonight with some people I met.”

“That’s great, sweetheart. I’m glad you’re making friends. Did you get the house unpacked?”

Amerie glanced at the tree line again then shook her head and went inside. She needed more coffee. “All unpacked. Still some things I want to get for it, but it looks good so far.” She pulled the phone away and whistled for Milo. This time he came right away.

“Oh good. So tell me about the people you’re going out with tonight.”

Amerie stayed on the phone with her mom for an hour. Her mom asked more questions about the house and town, and told Amerie about her friends and what she had been up to back in Nashville. Amerie had made herself another cup of coffee and sat on the couch with Milo next to her until her mother had to go meet a friend for some shopping.

After hanging up, Amerie went into the bathroom to freshen up. She splashed her face with cold water and looked at herself in the mirror. Her hazel eyes were almost completely dark green with a hint of gold and specks of orange-brown around the pupil. Her cheeks were slightly pink, contrasting her slightly tan skin. Her frazzled, wavy hair fell past her strong shoulders to her mid back. She was considered slightly tall and her build was on the thinner yet athletic side, a result of her avid love for hiking and working out. She hadn’t been working out as much since the move but she planned to get back into running starting tomorrow.

Amerie hopped in the shower. She closed her eyes as the warm water hit her and saw the face of the large white wolf. She knew she should have felt scared or at least nervous seeing such a large wolf so close to her and Milo, but she only felt a tug of curiosity.

She turned off the water without washing her hair or body. She was going on a hike with Milo. She quickly threw on a pair of thick black leggings, hiking boots, a long sleeved white shirt, and a thick green hoodie. She dried her hair and put it in a ponytail, putting on a gray beanie over it. Whistling for Milo, she grabbed her keys, water, bear spray, a collapsible water bowl, gloves, and a couple granola bars. She threw everything into a small backpack then grabbed her headphones and Milo’s leash, then headed out the door, locking it behind her.

Amerie trudged through the woods with Milo, being careful to remain vigilant. She listened carefully for any rustling or growls and watched for paw prints. Wolves weren’t the only thing out here; black bears, grizzly bears, and mountain lions all prowled these woods. She knew to remain vigilant and chose to keep Milo off leash for now.

She stayed on the path, but it was clear it was not one that was heavily traveled. Only the wildlife seemed to use this path, now. Multiple prints layered the path along with the occasional scat. Amerie spotted chipmunks, squirrels, birds, and a raccoon as her and Milo walked deeper into the forest. Of everything they saw, there was no evidence of any wolves.

She wanted to find evidence of the large white wolf, maybe even see it again. She knew it was stupid. Reckless. A possible endangerment to her life.

Maybe bringing Milo had been a mistake. Amerie sighed as she ducked under a half-fallen tree and watched Milo trot ahead with his tail wagging. She couldn’t help but smile at her dog looking so happy. Anger and guilt hit her for stupidly coming out here on a wild goose chase. And for what? A wolf? She was in Montana. There were plenty of wolves. It was far from abnormal to see one so close when she lived outside the skirts of town. Still…

Something felt wrong. Yet… right. Even as she told herself she should turn around, she continued further down the path. The sunshine and breeze whispered encouragement. The forest called to her. The further she walked, the more at peace she felt.

Two hours had passed. Milo and Amerie sat atop a flat rock near the edge of the path. She could see her lake and house down below, and the town in the distance. It was peaceful up here.

Milo perked his ears and looked to the trees to their right. Amerie’s breath stilled. A large female elk walked out of the brush and stopped when she noticed the dog and woman. She snorted and flicked her tail before continuing to the brush behind the rock on the other side of the trail. Just before she disappeared again she turned her head and looked right at Amerie. The woman blinked. Milo laid his head down in her lap just as the elk continued on.

An eagle soaring overhead called out. Amerie tilted her head back and smiled. She knew she had to head back. She had plans tonight, after all, and still needed to shower.

Just as she was about to stand up, a yellow petal fell on her shoulder and stuck in her hair. Amerie plucked it out and inspected it.

“Child…” Barely a whisper.

Amerie jerked. She whipped her head around but saw nothing.

“Is someone there?”

Nothing.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Milo stood up and licked her face. Amerie pushed him off and stood, still searching for the source of the voice. No one was there. She called out again, but only chirps of birds answered her.

She looked down at the flower petal still in her hand, then closed her fist. She tilted her head back and closed her eyes, loosing a breath. She looked down at her boots… and saw a large paw print. Not Milo’s. A wolf’s. Just a single paw print, no trail. She pulled her phone out to take a picture. Something in her pulled at her to keep going deeper into the woods, but she shook her head and called Milo to her side. He trotted over with his tongue hanging out and waited for her to signal the direction they were headed. She hesitated, then turned to walk back home, Milo on her heels.

Over three hours later, they still hadn’t made it home. Amerie had to fight the feeling to turn back with every step she took. The wind had picked up and seemed to nudge her as it blew past her. She kept pausing to enjoy the views and admire the wildlife that kept showing themselves. She secretly didn’t want it to end.

The forest was so alive and beautiful. She hadn’t fully appreciated it on the first half of the hike. Fall was in full swing. Sunshine dotted the ground through the leaves and pine needles, but didn’t bring the full strength of its warmth with it. The leaves were vibrant shades of gold, yellow, and ruby red. Some stubborn wildflowers still remained, even after the snow a few weeks ago. Purples and yellows dotted the ground amongst the green bushes and leaves that had already fallen and turn brown. The sparkling lake reflected the clear blue sky. In this moment, it looked like a slice of heaven.

Milo was rolling around in a patch of wildflowers. Amerie spotted a patch of balsamroot surrounded by the other flowers. They looked like miniature sunflowers. Amerie pulled out the yellow flower petal that had fallen on her earlier and realized it was from a balsamroot flower. She foraged a few to bring back to the house. They had many medicinal properties and were never a bad thing to have around.

Milo whined and laid down facing away from Amerie. Her heart sped up and a breeze kissed her cheek. She already knew what she’d see when she looked up. She hesitated. Slowly, she stood and slipped the flowers in her bag. She took a deep breath and looked up.

The white wolf sat about twenty-five feet away. It had to be over seven feet tall. He towered over Amerie. His golden eyes bore into hers. She subconsciously tilted her head and the wolf mirrored it. Neither moved. Milo laid his head down and remained where he was.

A black eagle swooped down and looses a cry before landing on a branch in a pine tree ten feet from Amerie. The wolf huffed but didn’t avert its gaze from Amerie. The wind picked up and swept Amerie’s hair toward the wolf, the animal’s fur seeming to glisten with silver and gold as the wind rustled it. Amerie had never seen anything like it.

The world paused for a moment. Minutes passed with Amerie and the wolf staring at each other. The wolf finally stood. Damn, this beautiful creature was huge. The eagle loosed a whistle toned cry before swooping down from the branch and away from the clearing. The wolf’s gaze followed the eagle then glanced back to Amerie before turning and trotting back into the thick trees.

Milo whined and stood, coming back to Amerie’s side. Amerie let loose a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding. She took a few deep breaths. Adrenaline and happiness flowed through her. With a pat on Milo’s head, she turned back towards the house and continued on her way. Her steps were lighter now.

Amerie finally made it back to her house just before four in the afternoon. She scarfed down a sandwich before hopping in the shower. A soft smile remained on her lips.

Just as she finished freshening up and stepped into her closet to find an outfit, her phone went off. Blaze had texted her.

“Hey Tennessee! You still coming out tonight?”

Amerie typed out her reply. “Wouldn’t miss it! What time will y’all be there?”

“My sister and I usually get there around seven so we can grab some food before it gets too busy. That work?”

“Sounds great to me. I’ll see you then :)”

“See you soon, Tennessee! So excited!”

Amerie smiled and tossed her phone on her bed, turning her attention back to her closet. Milo trotted in with his otter and jumped up on the bed.

“Come to help mom choose an outfit?” Milo squeaked his otter. “Always so helpful. What would I do without you?”

Amerie debated her options and eventually selected a black knit sweater and dark jeans with a rip on the right knee. She laid it on her bed then went back to the bathroom to dry her hair before getting dressed. She couldn’t get the wolf off her mind. The eagle piqued her interest now, too. She swore it actually communicated with the wolf… but that would be crazy. Almost as crazy as a wolf staring and tilting its head at her.

She blinked away the thoughts as she pulled on the jeans and sweater then dug out her makeup. She went with a slight smoky eye with a dark red lipstick. She added a few curls to her hair to tame the waves.

Satisfied with how she looked, she smiled at her reflection and went out into the living room. Amerie sat down on the couch while scrolling through her social media. Her friends back in Nashville were going out tonight to one of their favorite restaurants followed by drinks at the bar across the street from it. One of them, Charity, FaceTimed Amerie on her way to the restaurant and the two caught up. When Charity got to the restaurant and said goodbye, it was time for Amerie to head out. The two expressed how much they missed each other and Amerie told Charity to tell the other girls she wished she was there. As she ended the call, Amerie realized how much that last part wasn’t really true.

Amerie double checked her makeup in the mirror and fixed a few stray strands of hair. She let Milo out and checked to make sure he had food and water before grabbing her black purse and heading out the door. Today had been a great day, and it was far from over. Amerie smiled the whole ride to town.

Amerie parked just down the street from the bar and climbed out of her car. It was a couple minutes before seven and the sun had just set, painting the sky in deep purple and orange hues with strokes a pink highlighting the few clouds that hung in the sky above the mountains. A navy midnight crept in from the east, pulling the blanket of shimmering stars and glowing crescent moon with it. Amerie walked to the bar, the heels of her boots clicking on the cobblestone sidewalk. She was surprised to see that the town was just as alive as it had been during the days. There were families leaving restaurants, kids running around and tossing coins in the fountains, and couples walking hand in hand under the glow of the buzzing street lamps. A small line had already began to form at the bar. Amerie craned her neck to look for Blaze and spotted her short black hair just as Blaze turned around. “Tennessee! You made it!” Blaze clasped her hands together. She had foregone the round glasses and cu

Amerie dreamt of a snarling white wolf covered in blood and something black. Red dropped from the trunks of the trees. It looked like the trees themselves were bleeding. The hawk that Amerie had seen earlier was strewn out on the forest floor, its wings bent at unnatural angles. Lightning illuminated the sky, but no rain fell and no thunder sounded. A sinister laugh echoed. A man’s voice screamed her name-Amerie awoke with a start. She was breathing heavily and covered in beads of sweat. Her hands were tightly clutching the sheets. Milo sat up and looked at her, whining. Amerie closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then patted Milo on the head. “I’m okay, boy. It’s okay.” He whined and licked her face, then laid his head on her stomach. Amerie ran a hand down her face and grabbed her phone to check the time. It was just a few minutes before seven. She groaned and rolled over. It had been after 2:30 when she got home this morning, but she already knew she wasn’t going to be able to

There was so much blood. It was on Matt’s truck door. A large puddle was on the floor by his front wheel. The mess by the door to the building looked as if Matt had tried to fight back. Claw marks littered the outside of the door. What the hell had happened? Some rangers jumped into their vehicles to scour the forest and check nearby roads. Allen had three remain at the office to man the phones and radios. A request for assistance was sent to the police station. Others, Amerie included, followed Allen into the forest armed with guns and gear, tracking the paw prints.“Keep your eyes peeled,” Allen commanded. Tyler’s eyes were wide beside Amerie. “Anyone else notice there aren’t any drag marks?”“Or footprints,” Maya added quietly. The team continued pushing into the forest. A black eagle landed on a pine branch just ahead of them. It turned its golden eyes toward the group and screeched. A freezing wind smacked into the group, sending three of their hats tumbling into the underbrush

Amerie pressed her ear against the door. She heard Kierian sigh followed by a click as the front door shut slowly. She held her breath in an attempt to hear something, but it was silent. She sighed and leaned against the door. The room she had stormed into had a twin bed with a white metal bed frame in the center of the room. The only other piece of furniture was a wooden nightstand with a broken drawer. She attempted to open the small window over the bed, but it didn’t budge. The window only showed the trees behind the house, so she still had no idea what was going on out front with Kierian and the white wolf. She plopped down on the stiff mattress and waited. Five minutes had passed when she heard shouting. She opened the door and snuck out to the living room, then peeked out the window. Kierian was shouting with another tall man that was covered in blood and black goo. This man was even taller than Kierian. He also had hair as dark as Kierian’s, but it was cut shorter on the sides

Amerie awoke with a start. He dream of the bloodied white wolf had played over and over. A voice shouting her name still rung in her ears. Rubbing her eyes, she rolled over to see that it was only four in the morning. She grabbed her phone to check the message thread for the officers for any update on Matt. They’d temporarily given up searching around midnight after not finding anything, deciding to wait for the sun to come up. The search dogs had lost his scent only fifty feet into the forest from the Nature Center and hadn’t been able to pick up anything around the coordinates where Amerie had heard Matt. They planned on calling in a search plane and helicopter later today. She set her phone down and sighed. There had been so much blood. Had Matt hurt himself in the field or was he really attacked just outside the door without any of them being the wiser? How had no one heard something? His shouting echoed in her head. She prayed to whatever higher power would listen that he would

The man held up his hands and took a step toward her. “I’m not here to fight. I won’t hurt you.”Amerie wished she had her gun. All she had was her bear spray, which could still give her time to get away if needed. “You took my friend. I don’t believe you.”He eyed her stance and smirked slightly. “We didn’t take your friend, Ranger. We saved him.”“Then why won’t you let me see him? Why haven’t you reported him found or brought him to a hospital?”His expression clouded over. “It’s more complicated than that,” he said sternly, crossing his arms again. “Explain it. Or I’m calling this in now. Tell me who you are.” Her hands bunched into fists at her side. She could feel her nails starting to pierce the skin. His eyes darted to her fists. “Your little buddy had me hide in a house as you both kept things from me when a man was in danger. Start. Talking.”He ran a hand through his midnight dark hair. “Let’s go back and sit by the water. I’ll tell you what happened, and I’ll see what I c

Fallen leaves crushed beneath Amerie’s boots. The calls of crows filled the air around her. She was getting close to the small house where Kierian had brought her. Before she forgot, she pulled out her phone and sent Everett a quick message asking for a rain check. He responded quickly, saying he had planned to suggest the same thing when she got to work but had just heard she was taking the day off. He told her to feel better and promised to update her on the search efforts, then Amerie pocketed her phone. If she didn’t know any better, the forest would seem a peaceful place. Sunshine warmed her face. The trees blocked a gentle breeze that caused the high and thin branches to sway slightly. The occasional squirrel darted across her path, no doubt preparing for winter. She’d seen no evidence of an Embertaur. There had also been no sign of the white wolf or black eagle, both of which she’d grown so accustomed to seeing that it felt odd to not. She stepped into a clearing with tall

She kept her eyes closed for a moment, feeling the soft grass with her fingertips. The sun warmed her from head to toe. Birds chirped lightly around her and she smelled sweet wildflowers nearby. A nearby stream bubbled and gurgled. Amerie slowly opened her eyes. She once again found herself by the same small forest stream, it’s water sparkling and reflecting the patches of lupine. A bouquet of wildflowers sat beside her. A woman sat on one of the rocks by the stream with her back to Amerie. Her hair was long and silver. Two small braids wrapped around the crown of her head, and the rest fell in loose waves down to her hips. She wore a flowy white dress that sparkled in the sun. Amerie got to her feet slowly and approached her. The woman’s face was angelic. Her pale skin made her look almost fragile, but the war waging in her purple eyes said otherwise. Pink, full lips parted and smiled at Amerie. “You’ve had quite the past couple days, child. Come. Sit and rest for a moment.”Ameri

She knew those eyes. Had gazed into them for months, wondering why she did not want for more with their owner. Had watched the light leave them as his blood soaked her hands. A sob escaped her as her gaze fell on the bright white scar sliced across the beast’s dark abdomen. The dragon rumbled and dipped its enormous head to her in greeting. Dark wings scraped the ceiling of the cave sending small pebbles tumbling down and splashing in the shallow water. The beast was nearly too large for the outcropping it had tucked itself into, but it made no effort to move despite being free of chains. A spiked tail flicked in anticipation. “This is Vinterion. He was meant to be Everett’s dragon.” The gentle sympathy on Asmodeus’s voice did nothing to dull the pain of the loss. “The scar?” she whispered, her eyes tracing the thin line that perfectly mirrored the killing blow. “As rider and dragon, they were connected. The only thing that saved Vinterion’s life was that they had not yet met, so

Through the darkness she fell, and fell, and fell. She could feel him nearby but saw nothing beyond the spinning shadows and stars as they enveloped her. Amerie squeezed her eyes shut, her stomach churning from the endless tumbling. She wanted to cry out for him, but when she opened her mouth, nothing came out. Just when she was sure she was moments from breaking into pieces against the ground, two strong but delicate hands caressed her face, a hand on each cheek. The nausea subsided, replaced by a sense of unease and alertness. Muffled whispers echoed around her. She opened her eyes and bit back a scream. It was not Asmodeus’s face she saw, but a faceless queen with a crown that looked as if it had been plucked from the night sky. Golden brown waves framed the Queen’s pale, blank face. Orange and gold light danced along the waves of the Queen’s hair making her glow. Heatless flames encircled them, blocking out the swirling darkness. The flames whispered to Amerie, called to her. “P

She didn’t want to see Brynn pacing, scheming for a way to sneak over to the camp. But most of all, Amerie didn’t want to hear the cries of those who had lost a friend or family member on that battlefield. No. She wanted to tear through the camp, burning every horrible creature alive. She wanted to pluck the captives from the grip of death and terror and lead them unharmed from the ashes and smoke and deliver them back to their homes. She wanted to see the flames dance in the depths of Asmodeus’s eyes. Apollo spoke to those gathered, ensuring them that their loved ones had not died in vain. Asmodeus had been there. He’d said it had all been for her. Then Everett died. Blaze disappeared. Pack members were killed. How could this be for her? Anger filled her entire being. All she tasted was ash. Her throat was so dry and sore. A strange hiss sounded from nearby. It didn’t matter. She was the Great Other, but even that didn’t matter. Her powers didn’t matter. She couldn’t save him. Everett was dead. She could feel Asteri pushing her to move but her legs wouldn’t. Something soaked through the bottom half of her pant legs where she knelt on the ground. Amerie was covered in blood and she couldn’t tell how much of it was hers. Screams, yelps, hisses, clicks, snapping bones, and the tearing of flesh rang out across the clearing. It was a nightmare. She’d lost sight of her friends shortly after the start of the massacre but didn’t have the luxury of pausing to search for them. She sprinted for a gray wolf that was struggling against two winged beasts. One with a serpent’s head struck the wolf’s flank, eliciting a high pitched yelp from the canine. Amerie shot arrows of flame at the beast, nailing it in all four eyes and effectively blinding it. The other beast with a head similar to a frog growled at Amerie and turned toward her. The wolf took lunged for the beast’s neck but missed as the beast spun, knocking the wolf on its side. Amerie let a ball of flame fly, but she was a second too late. The beast splayed its paws to reveal razor like claws nearly four inches long, bringing them down on the wolf’s chest and splitting it open. Th

Asteri burst through the trees like a shadow of fur in the sun, panting hard as she threw herself at the pack house ahead. She shifted when she hit the front steps and gasped to catch her breath. Amerie attempted to concentrate on slowing her breaths but she knew the beasts were approaching. There had to be nearly a hundred of them closing in. She finally calmed her breaths enough to focus on listening for who was in the house. Blaze and Kierian were giggling in a room up the stairs. Everett talked on the phone about the town riots, likely to his deputy that she’d met at the nature center. Knives thudded against a wooden

The sun rose on a sparkling lake, painting the sky in hues of lavender and pink. Amerie sat perched on a boulder along the shore, watching as the forest shifted from nocturnal creatures to those that sang with the sun. Though spring was around the corner, the bite of the winter air remained and ice and snow still clung to the landscape. Amerie sighed, her breath forming a small white cloud in front of her before vanishing. Today was the day she was meant to face Asmodeus in the clearing. Today was the day the Ancients planned on her eliminating what she’d been led to believe was the biggest threat. Asmodeus had stood at the edge of the forest before the sun fell the day before, likely awaiting her answer to his offer. She had met his gaze and held it, letting tension and unanswered challenge hang in the air between them for a moment before turning away without a word. She’d walked back inside without a second look, not even turning when he had called out her name. She couldn’t. If h

His eyebrows were drawn together as he considered everything that had been said. Brynn shifted uncomfortably on her feet beside the door. Her sister had not showed up this morning— likely working the store. Everett sat leaned back in the chair to Amerie’s left, lightly scratching the stubble along his jawline. “Eight people,” Everett murmured. He shook his head, not bothering to lift his gaze from the floor as he added, “They’re calling for a hunt. They want to see the Wolf Man strung up in the town square.”Amerie’s eyes flitted to Apollo.
