Cara’s POV :
The rhythmic clopping of hooves against cobblestone punctuated the silence that had settled in the carriage
He sat opposite me, his face partly obscured by the shadow, his presence filling the cramped space between us. I studied his profile; the tightness in his jaw as he stared out the carriage at the blur of passing trees, lost in his own world. Did he regret taking me as a mate? Was he contemplating taking me back? Would my father allow it?
“I regret wasting so much time and resources trying to fix whatever you are. You’ve brought nothing but disappointment to this family.”
My father’s voice echoed in my head and I shut my eyes tightly in a desperate attempt to forget. He would never allow me return. I was stuck here, with Lucien Valen— completely at his mercy— and there was nothing I could do about it.
Time passed slowly as we traveled deeper into the countryside where Lucien’s castle lay. Our arrival was heralded with the ring of a bell and my breath caught in my throat when the heavy gray stone loomed into view for the first time. Worn granite caught the light of the setting sun and glowed beautifully, the diamond-shaped windows glimmering brilliantly.
Lucien may no longer have his former strength, but the castle clearly showed that he still had the money.
I felt a mix of anticipation and dread as I looked out the window, my stomach churning at the thought of what awaited me inside those walls. Each moment brought me closer to a world I knew nothing about and I wasn’t sure how to behave or what was expected of me now.
I was Lucien’s mate, would he require me to play the role of a luna? And how was I to do that, when I didn’t have a wolf? Had he discussed this with his council? His pack? What if they didn’t accept me?
Slowly, my anticipation shifted to fear, and I plastered myself back against my seat, fighting the urge to shudder. Lucien never looked at me the entire time. In fact, I was almost certain he had forgotten I was there. He just stared out his window, lost in whatever thoughts that had plagued him throughout our journey. The moment the carriage rolled to a stop, everyone sprung to attention. A climbing block was quickly brought forward and the door opened for our exit. Lucien got out and didn’t bother to hold a hand for me. He didn’t even look back. He stalked towards the small group that had gathered at the end of the granite pathway, leaving me behind.
The coachman held out a hand for me and struggling with my wavering legs, I clambered out of the carriage, hurrying after my mate.
I caught up with him just before he stopped before the small entourage, a group of two men, four guards and a woman. I paused a few feet behind him and tried not to pant.
“Welcome back Alpha.” One of the men said stepping forward. He was as tall as Lucien, but leaner with a short crop of dark brown hair on his head.
“Sean.” Was all the Alpha said in acknowledgement. The woman broke out of the group, struting forward with an elegant sultriness I could never dream to possess, her eyes adoringly on my newly acquired mate.
I was shocked when she hurried up to Lucien and immediately threw her arms around him, planting her ruby-red lips on his cheek.
“Oh Lucien. I missed you. You should’ve let me follow you.” She breathed, ending her words with a pout.
Lucien didn’t flinch. He didn’t push her away, but he didn’t hold her either, standing indifferently while she practically clung to him.
“Emily.” He clipped “Be appropriate for once.” He said sharply and with another pout, she withdrew her arms from him. She froze, her head raising sharply towards me as if she was suddenly taking note of my presence. Her eyes narrowed as they landed on me over Lucien’s shoulder, displeasure flickering over her beautiful features.
“I have some news. You might as well hear it from me before it becomes hot gossip.”
Lucien started, his droll, disinterested tone barely wavering at all.
I froze, suddenly aware the news he wanted to share and aghast that he would go about informing his people in such a manner.
“I have taken another mate.” He declared flatly and a stunned silence followed.
All eyes swung to me and I was suddenly the object of everyone’s attention.
I took an unconscious step back.
“What?” The second official finally spoke, stepping forward as well, his eyes wide with disbelief.
“What do you mean you took another mate?”
“Luke. It’s nice to see you too.” Lucien said, and then to our collective disbelief, he started to stride past them towards the castle.
“Alpha, hold on.” Sean started, going after him, Lucien knocked his hand away before it could touch his shoulder.
“It’s done Luke. We’re bonded already. The ceremony has been completed. She is your new Luna.” He called over his shoulder without a glance. All of them turned to me, various expressions of disbelief on their faces.
“She? Who is she?” Emily shrilled, visibly upset by the news and my presence. Lucien paused and only spared us half a glance. “Her name is Cara Wylder.”
“Wylder? You mean the family that has the golden luna?” Luke asked sharply, his eyes suddenly scrutinizing me. “Yes.” Lucien answered and continued moving. The guards arranged themselves around him and started to follow him. Sean went after him as well while Luke and Emily continued to stare at me.
“The golden… she doesn’t even have a wolf!” Emily shrilled. After a moment of studying me intently, Luke turned around and went after his brother.
Not wanting this Emily woman to rip me apart like she clearly wanted to, I went after them all. I heard her vicious curse behind me.
“Brother,” Luke said, his voice low and strained. “We need to talk about this’’
“No. We don’t.” Lucien said in response, not stopping at all.
“Sean, get Madam Troyer to see rooms and a maid assigned to her. I want her in the royal wing.”
“Royal—- Lucien!” Luke growled sounding absolutely incensed. We all halted to a stop when Lucien spun around suddenly, his face darkened with anger as he glared at us all.
“What?” He barked at Luke. The other brother pinched the bridge of his nose, clearly trying to contain his anger.
“Decisions like this affect the pack. Emily’s right. I can’t sense any wolf on her so how can she be the golden luna? Hell, how can she be any kind of luna?” He demanded and my stomach rolled uncomfortably with the familiarity of his questions. Questions I had just been asking myself.
“If she’s not your fated mate then pack law says she must be overlooked by the council first.”
Lucien raised a brow.
“I don’t need anyone’s permission to take a mate, least of all you.” They eyed each other and an underlying current of tension echoed over the room. Whatever was going on here far predated my arrival, but I was firmly caught in the middle now. It didn’t help that Emily was glaring daggers at me herself.
The staredown carried for a moment or two until Luka sighed, his shoulders dropping in resignation.
“Fine. You are the Alpha after all.” He said, a hint of resentment in his tone, and then he stalked past Lucien, going into the castle.
“Sean, meet me in my study when you have her settled.” Lucien ordered and then he too was gone, disappearing into the castle with his retinue of guards.
Sean and Emily both eyed me. It was Emily who moved first.
“Listen here you little shit—”
“Emily….” Sean called, a warning in his tone, but she ignored him entirely.
“I don’t know what you think you’re doing here, but it’s not going to work. What are you, human or something? You can never rule this pack without a wolf and once you start to weaken Lucien even more with your patheticness, he’ll see you for what you really are.” She leaned down until we were face level, eyeing me with so much hostility that I flinched.
“Worthless.” She finished spitefully and I flinched, the insult reopening several poorly healed wounds within me.
With that, she turned around, stalking off in the opposite direction of the castle.
Sean stared after her a moment then sighed. “I apologize for that. I don’t know what’s going on but I do know it isn’t your fault. When Lucien’s decided to do something, no one can talk him out of it.” He said, his expression rather tired.
Still too shaken to talk, I gave a meaningless nod.
“Come with me, I’ll take you to a room and find the Madam.”
He said softly and I gratefully went with him, needing the privacy so I could cry and wonder what the hell I’d gotten into.
“I don’t want you to worry about Lady Petrova. She can be a bit first but if you truly are installed as Luna, there’s nothing she could do about it. Lucien’s still Alpha here and what he says goes.”
I cleared my throat. “She’s not the only one who didn’t seem to like the idea of me.”
I husked and Sean grimaced. “Well, whether he likes it or not, Luke still answers to Alpha Lucien, as does everyone else in Pack Valen.”
He said and I nodded. So as long as Lucien wanted me here, I could be reasonably certain none of them would hurt me? For some reason, I wasn’t so comforted.
“I wouldn’t worry about it, really.” Sean reassured once more. But as we walked through the halls of the castle, the servants eyeing me and whispering beneath their hands as I passed, I could feel nothing but worry.
Lucien’s POVThe heavy oak door of my study clicked shut behind me, sealing me in blessed silence. I exhaled, leaning back against it for a moment, allowing the weight of the day to rest on my shoulders. The decision to take Cara Wylder as my mate had been a strange one that surprised even me. I'd spent the entire journey trying to figure out why I'd done that. I still didn't exactly have the answers, nor could I particularly defend my decision before any of my people, but it had been done and I was damned if I was going to go back and forth on it. Straightening, I crossed to my desk, the intricate patterns carved into its surface barely visible beneath the stacks of correspondence, reports, and council summons. I ignored the bulk of it, reaching instead for the sealed letter sitting on its own. Breaking the wax seal with a sharp flick of my wrist, I skimmed the contents. It was another reprimand from my beloved council. Their disappointment in my failure to forge a political union
Cara’s POVThe towering oak doors of the great castle closed behind me with a hollow thud, leaving me feeling dwarfed by the grandeur of the place. The air inside was cool, carrying the faint scent of polished wood and old stone. The hallway stretched endlessly in both directions, lit dimly by sconces that flickered as if unsure of their purpose. My eyes traced the intricate moldings and the high, arched ceilings, marveling at the undeniable resplendence of it all. Yet, there was something unmistakably sad about this place—a weight that clung to the very walls. The castle was beautiful, yes, but also lifeless. Flower vases lined the hallways, their ornate craftsmanship wasted on their emptiness. Some statues, which must have been majestic once, were shrouded in dusty white sheets, their forms reduced to mere silhouettes. The carpets beneath my feet were pristine, but the patterns felt outdated, like relics from a time when this place had known joy. Even the golden chandeliers above, t
I froze as Emily stepped inside, her confident stride and sharp gaze filling the room with a tension that made my heart pound. I didn’t know whether to stand, speak, or simply shrink into the chair I was perched on. My fingers gripped the armrests tightly as I stared at her, unable to mask my wariness.Emily’s eyes swept the room before landing on me. Her lips curled into a smirk that made my stomach churn. “So,” she began, her tone dripping with mockery, “this is where they’ve decided to stash you. Not bad, I suppose. Though, I’m surprised they didn’t opt for a broom closet. That’s probably more your speed.”Her voice was cold and haughty, her words hitting me like a slap. My throat tightened, but I couldn’t summon a response. I was too scared. I felt small under her sharp gaze, too meek to challenge her, too unsure of my place to even politely ask her what she wanted. I didn’t know her very well, but I could certainly tell why she’d taken the trouble to come here. All my life I’ve b
The council chamber was stifling, filled with the murmur of discontented voices as the elders filed in and took their seats. Each one carried an air of authority, their expressions stern and expectant. I stood at the head of the long oak table, my back straight, arms folded behind me. Beside me, Sean stood like a sentinel, his presence steady and reassuring. My brother, Luke, leaned against the far wall, arms crossed but silent.Even before Elder Haverson, the oldest and most powerful of the councilmen, cleared his throat and began, the room was heavy with unspoken judgment.“Alpha Lucien,” he started, his tone clipped and laced with reproach. “We bid you welcome from your recent travels. However, we have learned you came with some concerning news, about decisions you have taken concerning the question of your Luna.”I cleared my throat and stepped forward. “Yes.”“So it is true then? You have taken some unknown girl as mate?” This came from Elder Marlow, a rail-thin woman with sharp
Cara’s POVThe morning light filtered through the heavy curtains, casting faint streaks of gold across the dark wooden floors of my room. My eyes fluttered open, the heaviness in my chest returning as soon as I stirred. I hadn’t slept much—how could I, after Emily’s tirade? Her words still clung to me like thorns, each one pricking at my already fragile sense of self-worth.The sound of a gentle knock broke through my thoughts. Before I could respond, the door creaked open, and Alice entered, carrying a tray laden with breakfast. Her ever-present smile was a small comfort amidst the storm brewing in my mind.“Good morning, my lady,” she said, setting the tray down on the small table near the window. “I thought you might like something to eat. You barely touched dinner last night.”I sat up slowly, brushing my hair away from my face. “Thank you, Alice. I wasn’t very hungry yesterday.” To say the truth, I wasn’t very hungry today either, but I didn’t want to talk about why. I wanted des
The fire in the hearth cast uneven shadows across the stone walls of my office. The flickering light was barely enough to make the stacks of papers on my desk legible, but I didn’t care. I had a wolf eyes. I could see in the dark just fine. Besides, there was nothing I really could do right now. The mountain of reports, requests, and demands could sit there for all I cared. It wasn’t as though anyone expected me to fix things overnight—not anymore. My hand rested on a letter I had half-read, the contents mattering little in the face of my troubles. The words blurred together, their meaning lost against the tide of memories that kept clawing their way to the surface. Lucy would have scolded me for ignoring the work piling up. Then she’d flash that smile, the one that made the worst days bearable, and she’d find some way to make the burden seem lighter. The ache in my chest deepened, the need for what was nearly overwhelming. I closed my eyes and leaned back in my chair, the leather cre
Lucien’s POVI returned to my study after leaving Cara, still infuriated by her encounter with Luke. I knew I was being a bit irrational, but I couldn’t help my reaction. It appeared the mate bond was in full effect already, despite my best intentions. I swore viciously under my breath, frowning hard at correspondence I could hardly pay attention to. I had been through a mate bond before. I recognized the need. The yearning. The desperation to possess and annihilate anyone who so much as breathed the same air as my mate. I was being completely unreasonable, but reason had little hold over the raw intensity of a mate bond. It clawed at my composure, shredding my attempts to focus on the mundane reports littering my desk earlier in the day. Every glance at the neatly stacked papers felt futile. I knew that my irritation wasn’t rooted in Luke himself but in the primal pull that bound me to Cara—a bond I still wasn’t ready to embrace fully. Her absence haunted the edges of my consciousne
Once we were alone, Theo gestured for me to sit. I obliged, settling into one of the leather chairs opposite his expansive desk. His shrewd gaze remained fixed on me, his eyes as calculating as ever.“I appreciate your apology Lucien. That you could come before me and admit your wrongs shows you are not as without integrity as I thought.” He rumbled and I bowed my head slightly in a gracious nod. “Thank you Theo. I am honoured that you can still think so favorably of me. All things considered.” I murmured and Theo nodded. “I am confused as to one thing though. I had thought we had some sort of understanding.” He said, eyes boring into mine. “Why did you then bind yourself to this girl who, as rumor has it, isn’t nearly as proficient a wolf as my daughter?”The weight of his question hung in the air. I hesitated. I couldn’t give him the same vague non-answer I’d provided my pack. Theo Petrova wasn’t a man to tolerate half-truths, and I had already strained his patience enough.I clear
Luke looked at me like I had two heads when I approached him that morning. I couldn’t blame him. After all, I had been the one to quit, abruptly declaring that I didn’t need his help. Now here I was, practically groveling to be taken back.“I know I was… rude before,” I admitted, shifting awkwardly on my feet. “But I was… overwhelmed. I shouldn’t have lashed out at you. I’m sorry.”His dark eyes studied me, skeptical and wary. It wasn’t like Luke to hesitate. He was usually all charm and easy confidence, but today he seemed… hesitant. Uncertain, even.“You don’t have to do this,” he said finally. “If you’re only here out of guilt—”“I’m not,” I interrupted firmly. “I’m here because I want to learn. Please, Luke.”He exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Fine. But we’re changing things up. No more laps.”Relief flooded me, and I nodded eagerly. “Anything you think will help.”He led me to a cleared patch of grass, explaining basic combat stances and defensive maneuvers. “The first ru
Lucien’s POVI was trapped all day in a meeting dragged longer than I anticipated, a tedious affair of negotiation and posturing with Alphas who couldn’t see beyond their egos. The invasion of my lands was becoming unbearable and I was determined to do something about it without reverting to war, but the other’s weren’t making it easy. The Alpha whose wolves kept intruding hadn’t even bother to show up, a clear sign that he disdained me and my request. I had promised myself I was done fighting. The last time I’d waged war, I had won my opponent, but had ended up with my mate assassinated and five years later, I was yet to catch the culprit. My elders and packmembers didn’t understand it, but I wasn’t in a hurry to return to that violence, especially now that I had a new mate that someone could target. By the time I returned to the castle, the sun was well on its descent, casting long shadows through the corridors. I had barely stepped inside when I spotted Sean pacing near the grand
Cara’s POVThe sun was yet to rise when I slipped out of my room. My steps echoed faintly in the silent corridors. The castle was eerily quiet, the usual hum of activity replaced with a stillness that felt almost sacred. For once, eyes didn’t follow me as I passed and I was thankful for it. I wore britches—a decision that had taken more courage than I cared to admit. They weren’t exactly ladylike, but practicality won out over propriety. I needed to move freely, and skirts simply wouldn’t do. If anyone saw me, I’d probably have more rumors trailing me than I already did. Thankfully, the halls remained empty aside from an occassional guard or two. The sparse security had me wondering again about this Pack and how easy it would be to escape. I didn’t dare risk it though. It would be dangerous for a wolfless woman like me to trudge through wolflands. It wouldn’t take long before I was hunted and I would likely find myself in the possession of a far more deplorable Alpha. Maybe when I wa
Cara’s POVThe morning sunlight filtered through the thin curtains in my room, painting the floor in muted gold. I sat at the edge of the bed, staring down at my hands. They weren’t trembling today, and that felt like an accomplishment— a small victory in a sea of neverending misery. Several days had passed since Emily’s threats and Lucien’s coldness that had nearly broken me. Somehow, I managed to survive. I’d moped for most of the time, but after deep thought, I had finally come to the conclusion that I couldn’t keep waiting for someone to save me—not Lucien, not anyone. If he didn’t want me, there was nothing I could do about it, bond or no. The bond couldn’t force us together after all. It was only powerful if the people it bounded together accepted it. If even one partner rejected it, there was very little the other could do. It didn’t care for the consent of the couple or pretty much anything else. Whether we wanted it or not was irrelevant. It was an ever constant thing that wo
Cara's POVThe hallway felt impossibly long as I walked away from Lucien. My hands trembled at my sides, and my heart was still racing from our confrontation. Anger and humiliation burned under my skin, warring with an ache I couldn’t quite place. Hurt, betrayal; both? Why did I even care? He didn’t want me—that much was clear—and yet, his refusal to let me go made no sense. I had begged him for freedom, and he… he had just walked away. The thought made my throat tighten. I needed air. I needed space. I needed to be anywhere but here. My feet carried me down a series of corridors, unfamiliar and winding, as I sought refuge in the sprawling estate. The silence of the castle pressed in on me, broken only by the occasional whisper of wind through the windows. No one bothered me as I passed, all the wolves watching me from the corner of their eyes but not saying a word. I heard feet move, voices whisper, silver clatter from a distance. I moved as if in a trance, propelled by my frustratio
Lucien’s POVCara’s eyes widened, disbelief crossing her features at my refusal. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from saying anything else, aware that I was not exactly of sound mind at the moment. “I don’t understand. What do you mean no?” She asked, her voice sounding incredibly hurt. I gritted my teeth against my rising emotions, her wave of vulnerability stirring something in me. “I mean no Cara. What’s done is done.” “Done? How can it be done when you’re here planning to tie yourself to someone else?”She shrilled a fire lighting behind her gaze.“I’m grateful that you saved me that day. I doubt I would have wanted to be King Darius’ slave. However, I don’t think I want to be bonded to you considering the circumstances. So please, let’s just annul it.” The words sounded reasonable, but they infuriated me which confused and frustrated me all at once, leaving me in a tizzy of emotions. “We can’t. This discussion is over!” I growled, growing inexplicably angry and she blin
Cara’s POVI had been given more luxuries in Lucien’s palace than I’d ever experienced before. Gowns of fine silk, meals fit for royalty, and quarters that seemed far too grand for someone like me. And yet, none of it mattered. Not when the man who had claimed me as his mate treated me as if I were invisible. For a week, Lucien had all but vanished. After the bizarre intensity of our initial encounters—the bond pulling us together, his anger, his cold indifference—he’d left me to stew in a sea of confusion. I’d tried to make sense of it all, to understand why he had bound himself to me only to disappear. And then, as if to further baffle me, he’d appeared out of nowhere two days ago with a ridiculous anger and an unbelievable demand.“Stay away from my brother,” he’d said, his voice sharp and unyielding. The command had left me reeling and not in good ways. All I’d done was exchange a few polite words with Sean at the garden. Sean had been kind, a rare glimmer of warmth in an otherwis
