Jayden turned to me, noting the hurt that hadn’t left my eyes.
He sighed deeply. "What choice do I have?"
“No, no, I get it,” I said, cringing at the way my own voice sought to betray me with its unsteady crackling. “You worked hard for your position and I—you asked me to leave the bathroom before we—”
“Kai, what? This has nothing to do with my position.”
“What then? Me?” Impossible. “Look, you don’t have to worry about me. Worst case, they'll call my mom. She'll knock me around a bi—"
"No."
"No what?"
"No. Any chance I get to protect you from your mother, I’m taking it. If I’d left when you asked me to, this wouldn’t have happened. I’m just as much to blame for it and won’t have you hurt because of my actions a second time."
"But I don't want you and her—" I stopped myself. I wouldn’t be getting through
A tangible silence descended on the hall, creeping into the bones of all present. Instinctively, we all knew to set our gazes to the top of the hall where Carmen appeared in all her president-stealing glory. The girl strutted down the hall with her head above the clouds. She was on top of the world, soaring from the attention her little manoeuvre had brought. The shameless smirk set on her lips told everyone how little she cared about the potential consequences of her actions. I didn’t matter—not even Erin mattered. The girl had gotten her prize and wouldn’t let the envy of others bring her down.On the contrary, it propelled her higher. Her friend, Jessie, hurried over to her, whispering something we had no hope of hearing. Like the prying eyes that chased her down the hall, Carmen ignored the girl’s words. She’d slept with the student body president himself; nothing anyone said would ruin her day.“And we thought you were getting ahead of yourself,” Lara said, coming to a stop by Ha
Minutes trickled by with the three of us sitting in what had become an uncomfortable silence. I didn’t know what to say and Jonie seldom saw the need for words. It was Carmen’s approach with another girl in tow that finally broke the unintended standoff.“Carmen said you slept together—there’s no way, right? Friday night? Were you really at her house?”It was the first time Jayden lifted his gaze since taking a seat at the table and it was to stare daggers at the girl who’d continued to inflate her own standing among girls who would kill to be in her position.“Are you planning to go around telling everyone?” he asked.“You never said I couldn’t tell my friends. Guys sleep around and talk all the time. Why shouldn’t I?”He set to respond, his expression darkening to something unrecognisable, but before he could, the intercom went off.“Attention, will Jayden Pryce and Carmen Phillips report to the principal’s office immediately? I repeat, Jayden Pryce and Carmen Phillips.”Jayden got
At the end of the day, the rumour mill had once again fired up. I entered the hall to find Madelyn with her ear all but pressed to another girl’s lips; it had become a common sight throughout the day. While she wasn’t Jonie, Madelyn was good in a pinch and more accessible besides. I stood by the lockers, waiting for her to spot me. She’d want me to know everything; it was one of her better qualities. “What’s going on?” I asked when she walked over. “You will not believe it,” she said, her eyes catching fire as she set to fill me in on the whispers around the halls. “You know how Jayden and Carmen went at it last Friday, yeah?” “Yeah…” Surely there was more. That story had begun to lose its steam by lunch and was all but stale by fifth period. It wouldn’t have garnered this reaction at the end of the day. "You will not believe it. Turns out she might have given him something.” Maddie’s eyes widened for the drama and theatrics of it all. The misfortune of the girl and potentially ou
She walked up to us, eyes brimming with tears and a face stained with those that had already fallen. I watched the girl who’d threatened to doom me to the same faint just the week before stand before me broken, and my heart bled. “How could you?” The girl could barely manage to whisper. “Why shouldn’t I?” Jayden asked. “Girls sleep around and talk all the time. Why can’t I?” Carmen shook her head, trying desperately to blink back tears so she could look at him. “But you’re lying, and now Ethan’s gonna…he’s gonna—” A sob escaped her lips before she was able to regain her composure. It was all she could do to keep from falling apart. “That’s on you. You offered, remember? You knew you had a boyfriend when you offered, didn’t you?” …He was enjoying it. “Take it back! Tell everyone you’re lying because you know you are! I don’t—I don’t have gonorrhoea! Jayden, please.” He scoffed, unaffected by her tears. “Y
It took another month, but I could finally say that things had settled down. The halls once filled with the business of other students now buzzed with talk of the upcoming dance. With as exciting a time as they’d been promised, no one seemed to remember my social faux pas back when I’d first arrived. They’d accepted I was the outspoken, spunky, go-getter just looking for a shot and had begun to excuse the greater portion of my ‘misplaced enthusiasm’. It was the life I’d hoped to lead from the moment I entered the school and with the twists and turns that had met me at the start, I’d begun to despair that I never would. The body had even grown more accepting of my presence whenever Jayden or Jonie invited me to sit with them—Erin being the obvious exception. There were rumours that insisted she’d been the one to orchestrate Carmen’s downfall in the prior month—a means of teaching a lesson to the girl and anyone else with designs on the student body president
The disinterest slipped suddenly from warm brown eyes, replaced by intrigue and something else that I couldn’t quite read in the boy’s expression. I watched Jayden’s face light up a mere second before he pushed away from the table to follow her back to ours. Madelyn grinned at me the whole walk back but all I could do was sink into my chair as a fresh wave of embarrassment washed over me. “So, Deneiro, I hear you’re looking to be my date to the dance.” The upper hand was firmly in his grasp, and he was enjoying every minute of it. My face flooded with warmth as I gaped at the arrogant leader of the school. The smirk I often admired taunted me now, ridiculing my hidden desires. “I—It wasn’t—Madelyn—” “Yes or no is enough,” he said, taking on the tone he often carried during meetings. Without a doubt, he was pleased by the little back and forth he’d been allowed into against my wishes and would see how far he could take it. “It takes a lot to wiggle your way into that spot. I’m not
Before another word could be said, Jonie appeared. I hadn’t seen her in days, but there she stood creating another barrier between us. She spun around to face him, a viciousness set in her eyes. “I explained something to you over the weekend, yet here you are doing this shit.” Her words were furiously whispered before she grabbed me by the hand and all but yanked me from the cafeteria. I followed without protest, shame washing over me at the thought of what she may have told him and how our little scene had looked to our audience of onlookers. The whispers followed us until we hit the door—nothing less than expected by this point. Jayden and I had put on quite the show without giving any resolution or so much as an explanation for the fire that had sparked between us. It would be interesting to hear the theories they came up with for our tragically derailed interaction we’d been all too eager to participate in just moments before. I resolved to ask Jonie what she’d explained to J
At the door, I heard talking coming from the other side. Jonie rule #4: if you hear talking behind a closed door, don’t make any sudden movements. Get whatever information you can to inform yourself further. Carefully, I pressed my ear to the door. “She asked you to be her date to the dance?” Erin was furious. Peering through the keyhole, I found her pacing back and forth in agitation while the others watched with varying degrees of concern. “Not exactly,” Jayden said. He wasn’t too far away, leaning against the table by Jonie’s seat. “What was your reply?” She asked, flashing around to face him. “I refused, more or less,” he said with a shrug. “Why?” Sydney was just as distraught as Erin had been, though for evidently different reasons. I didn’t know I’d grown enough in her esteem for her to defend me in my absence. It was as curious as the conversation I listened in on. “What do you mean why?” Erin shot back. “Jayden’s my date, no questions asked. That’s how it’s always been
