2019, March 26th

That night, as per Aaron’s instructions, Zoey showed up at The Honey Trap on her own and took a seat at the bar, crossing her legs. She ordered a Chardonnay, also as per his instruction, and then she waited.

In a few minutes, Aaron came and sat down next to her.

“Whatever I do, just follow my lead. Okay?” he said, looking straight ahead.

“Okay,” she answered.

She could do this. She could sit next to Aaron in this ridiculously uncomfortable dress and somehow handle whatever he threw her way. Yup, she was fine. Totally fine.

He turned to her and subtly took her hand, gently tracing circles on the top of her hand, remembering that she was ticklish there. Sure enough, in a few seconds, she gave light little giggles. Aaron’s eyes darkened, clouded over with lust as his eyes dropped to her cleavage. Zoey’s face reddened. His face produced a dangerously sexy smile to go with the lustful look. He was making her uncomfortable, and he didn’t seem to care, not this time. He

2019, March 27th(Paris)Waking up to Zoey’s head in his lap, Aaron sighed. This was the second and probably the last time he would wake up to her face. Her eyes were puffy from crying herself to sleep, but she was still the most beautiful woman he had ever beheld. If he could only take it all back, the moment he’d lost her, undo it somehow. Realize sooner just how much she meant to him. Looking at her now though and the way she was clinging to those rings, she didn’t need to tell him it was too late.He might even have seen it coming, had he not been so determined to believe that he really could find his father and save the day for once. They were behind him, surrounding them before he knew it and then she walked in and he knew that feeling of dread he had gotten the moment Jesse opened the door was justified. “If you’re done playing detective, son, we have a war to start,” said Queen Mary, calm and detached as ever.Aaron glared at Jesse, who bowed and said, “Forgive me, Your Highn

2019, March 27th (Copia) When James and Emily sat down with Duke Maine for a second time, he said, "You should be flattered. I have a rule about not letting people waste my time." James put three different folders down in front of him, smiling coldly. He hadn't had time to prepare the last two times he met with Duke Maine and came away both times feeling somewhat like he'd lost. And James Beaumont didn't lose. Ever. He was going to enjoy this. He slipped the first to Duke Maine. "I have a rule too. I don't sign contracts my lawyers haven’t looked at," said James. Curious, Duke Maine picked up the folder and flipped through the contract he and James had signed a few months ago. He found a highlighted clause and even Duke Maine couldn't hide his surprise. The contract had looked standard when he reviewed it at Eleganter Ludo, but then he had only glimpsed at it. He didn't think his daughter's future husband would try to screw him over. Ironically, he hadn't. This was all just dumb

2019, March 28th(Caines)Zoey had been looking for Aaron all night, having run out the door after him the moment she could make her mind comprehend that he had left. She went everywhere he’d ever taken her, finally ending up in front of the cabin. The lights were on, but now that she might have found him, she didn’t know if she should be here after all. The door opened, and she gasped. “Won’t you come in?” he asked. She stepped inside. He was a mess. He looked like he hadn’t slept all night and he reeked of alcohol. “Aaron. I-”“You’re sorry, right?” he said absentmindedly, staring intently at a photo of them he had had framed and put on the mantle. It was of her asleep on the floor in his arms in front of the fireplace. She couldn’t answer him, her eyes now also glued to the image, to the memory. When she was brave enough, she looked. Seeing the pain she had caused him, was causing him, the hurt she’d allowed herself to ignore because he hurt her first, broke her heart. “Fathe

2019, March 28th(Caines)“Where were you?!” Natalie asked, a sigh oozing out of her when Zoey got back to the Arden mansion. Zoey’s eyes went to Bart. “How’s CC? I hear congratulations are in order. She’s already called to ask me to be her maid of honour.”Duke Arden looked between his children. “She’s getting married? To whom?”“To Bart,” Zoey answered, suppressing a smile. “What?!” Duke Arden answered, dumbfounded. “It’s matron of honour, dear,” said Duchess Arden. “You’re married now and about to become a crown princess.” It wasn’t the duchess’ grinding voice that bothered Zoey this morning. After all, she didn’t mind having her ears hurt so long as her heart would let up for a moment. “That’s not going to happen,” Zoey announced. “The marriage is going to be annulled. I just signed and sent the papers back.” “You did what?” Bart and Duke Arden asked at the same time. “What’s wrong?” Zoey asked, looking between them. “Wrong isn’t the word exactly,” cooed Duchess Arden.“

2019, March 28thThe walls were filled end to end with paintings of little events, moments they had shared. There was one from the first time he’d asked her to dance. It captured everything, down to every last little detail. The way he bowed, the dress she wore, the way her hair was put up. There was one of her getting out of the car as he waited for her on the streets of Caines, one of her in the red dress he had picked for the restaurant. She knew for a fact she hadn’t looked that good that night. There were many different ones: of her taking his hand and opening up his fist when he got angry at the bellboy Ren, of him throwing her over his shoulder, of her in the wedding dress when she was still in the boutique trying it on, of him kissing her cheek on the day of the press conference, of Zoey asleep in bed next to him, of him kneeling before her at the duchess’ welcome as he gave her his mother’s ring, of her kneeling with him after the fight, of their first real kiss on a corn

Is it really such a big deal if two old guys don't get along?!"James came up to Zoey, pulling her away from the edge of the cliff. He must really not be thinking straight. How the hell had he sat still in a car next to this crazy woman while she drove him up the dirt road (the condition of which seems to have worsened since the last time he was in Caines) of Height of Caines like a rookie Formula 1 driver?"When those two men are your dad and my dad, yes," James answered, emptying more of the whiskey into his mouth. He knew he had to stop. He still had to get them back down safely somehow. James pulled out his phone and called for a helicopter to take them back down, all the while keeping his eye on her. She was completely wasted and not to be trusted to make even the slightest move. The screaming had stopped. Sudden

Let's get out of here," James said, taking her hand as he led her through the maze garden, trying to remember the secret way out he and Aaron had created all those years ago.James took Zoey to CC's fashion house. He meant to give Zoey something as a wedding gift, but as he was unlikely to be here tomorrow, he wanted to give it to her now. When they got there, though, he changed his mind. There was suddenly something too intimate about his gift. So while she washed up and somehow found CC's vodka stash, he looked for clothes for her to wear."Isn't it lovely?" Zoey asked, twirling around in the emerald dress he had designed for her.Again, James was taken aback. She was surprising him a lot tonight. He was sure she wasn't all that drunk anymore, so this was just all her. She'd chosen to put his dress on all on her own, no drunken influence needed. James never di

(Sartis Est: Some time ago)It was over, at least in real time. In her head, it was still ongoing. She was still imagining the agony, the fear her brother and parents and thousands of her people had experienced when they were blown to bits. Even as she watched her country still alight, still burning while what was left of her people worked tirelessly to put it out, she was kneeling in the dirt and the ashes to receive the crown, her father’s crown. A crown that was never supposed to touch her red-haired head. She remembered her father’s strict words to her brother every time he showed that he was hurt or wanted to cry. “Tears are not for monarchs,” he’d say and Ethan, her brother, would immediately stop crying, like it was a switch he’d just flipped. She kept saying the words to herself like a mantra, softly so that only she could hear them. When the other side’s surrender came, she gave the order to annihilate them. What good was their surrender now? Her entire family was dead and s

(8 Months Later)Their loved ones had, at last, convinced James that it was time to take Zoey on their honeymoon. King Henry had managed to detain the newlyweds for far too long, both he and James recognizing that he had a lot to learn about the ins and outs of what exactly being a prince entailed. Since James wanted to be with his wife and involve her as much as possible in his life, his world, even if that meant that they spent a lot of their time together working, Zoey was always with him, picking up the tricks of the trade along the way. They even managed to make it look romantic somehow, stealing little moments wherever they could, disappearing when they could. So their marriage wasn’t exactly on the rocks, but they had earned some time to just be with each other, like they’d always wanted. They had been gone for two weeks when the news that the palace would be having a new guest reached them. “Your worry lines are showing, Jamie,” said Zoey, wrapping her arms around his neck

He just watched her, letting her words settle into his heart. Her touch comforted him, made him feel loved, like he had all her attention. Maybe he was just letting it all go to his head, but he didn't care. As far as he was concerned, they were forever now. They really were a bunch of besotted fools. She was absolutely out of her mind for him and he for her and nothing and no one was going to change that."I love you too, James Beaumont, Condor, whomever," she whispered, as she watched him fall asleep. She had seen the questions in his eyes, the concern. Maybe she had taken on more than she could handle. There was peace in his eyes too when he picked her up afterwards, though. That moment that he looked at her and seemed to believe, seemed to realize that she was never going anywhere again, she wou

2019, March 31st & April 1st(Eleganter Ludo) When Zoey and James got to the penthouse around 3 AM, they were exhausted. But the goodbyes had been so emotional that they ended up just staring at the wall. “Having second thoughts?” he asked.“Nope. Are you?” she asked back.“Nope.”“Are you lying?”“Yes.”“Me too.” In a bid to make him and herself feel better, Zoey got up, put some music on, went into the bedroom and put the emerald dress he’d so lovingly saved on. “Dance with me?” she said, holding onto the skirt of the dress. He smiled at her. She had no idea what this gesture meant to him. “I never thought I’d see that dress again,” he said, pulling her into his arms, just holding on tight for a moment. “Do you know why I took it off of you that night?” he asked, as he began to gently sway to the music, moving with her. “You don't have to tell me,” she answered gently, looking down. There was hurt in his eyes, just like the moment he had taken it off of her that night. Feeling like they were about to betray everyone, James and Zoey were squeezing each other’s hands tightly as they sat in front of King Henry and Cassandra. “So, you’ve decided then,” said King Henry. “We’re leaving tomorrow morning. I’m taking Zoey on our honeymoon,” James said, kissing her hand. “Where to?” Cassandra asked, her face a mixture of happiness and concern. “We don’t know yet. We’re just going to go,” Zoey answered. King Henry was furious, but he said nothing. Cassandra sighed. “Well, make sure to take lots of pictures and enjoy every moment and check in-”“Damn it, he’s only 19, James!” Henry exploded. “And your sister, she can’t take a crown, not after what happened with her mother. You know how she is; she’s absolutely set on that boy.” “Henry, they’ve made up their minds,” Cassandra said gently. Zoey and James exchanged looks. She did know,

2019, March 31st & April 1stJames had been driving Zoey around all day on his brand-new motorbike. He thought he would have to get her one too and then thought better of it. He liked the feel of her against his back as he drove it, her arms around his waist. They’d been all over Copia. He took her to markets and what he considered to be a better painting class than what she'd been taking. He took her to beautiful clearings and showed her breath-taking flower fields and secret coves he’d found while walking on the beach for hours. The bathing suit she had shown up in last time she wanted a beach day was of course forbidden, but then the wetsuit she had ended up in didn’t make men stop and stare any less. It drove him crazy. He showed her absolutely everything he could think of.Finally, as the sun was setting, he took her up to his favourite tower of Beaumont house and showed her his favourite spot in his city. The sunset, the view, the warmth and safety of his arms, all of it, made

2019, March 30th & 31st"Leave my son be, Henry. He's happy. For the first time in his life, he looks unburdened," she said, her voice becoming unsteady as she showed him the pictures Bart and Aaron had collected of the newlyweds. There wasn't a single one in which they didn't look happy, truly, beyond a shadow of a doubt happy, even as they fled from place to place. They looked something like she and Henry had in the beginning. Always touching in some way or another, stealing secret glances and kisses and sharing not so secret ones. 2019, March 30th & 31st Zoey woke up to the sound of the shower running. She picked up his shirt off of the floor and pulled it over her shoulders. Most of the wedding night was still a blank to her, but one tiny piece of memory stuck with her and she wanted to see if it was still there. She knew he had had something similar made for her for the Duchess’ Welcome, but that one seemed new somehow. That night, Zoey had woken up midway through James struggling to get her wedding dress off, felt the zipper go down and watched him as he hung it up. She wished she remembered the way he did, or at least remembered a better memory, like the actual wedding. This one memory hurt too much to have. She opened the closet door and there it was, not quite as beautiful as the new modified version, but still as radiant as the night she’d worn it. “I guess you do remember some things after all,” he said, watching her touch the dress nostalgically. She didn’t freak out that he was fresh out of th

James took a firm hold of her hips and slammed into her, entering her hard and fast. She cried out his name in pain. Sorry that he'd hurt her by being greedy and selfish and impatient, he rolled them back over and pulled out of her slowly, thrusting back in just as carefully, much gentler this time. He hadn't meant to be so rough; he just couldn't quite contain himself. She said the words, and he had to have her, had to make her his, be hers.Zoey's face relaxed into contentment. She was happy that he'd finally taken her, made her his in every way. It didn't matter that he'd hurt her a little, because the rest was pure pleasure, because her heart had never felt so full. They stared at each other as they went at it, painfully slowly at first.
