The dim light poles along the winding alleys illuminated shadows to the pavement Naomi stepped on. Commuting back home after her self-study in school, this is the long stairways she had to walk up daily, to her home at the top of the alleys.
For an outsider, this hilly neighborhood gives an illusion of a romantic getaway as it has the closest space to a better view of the moon. Yet, with the chipped paint of colored houses along with the distinct lack of planning development, this place is soon to be abandoned. Sooner the neighborhood will be only occupied by the elderly and bad memories.
Because in reality, living in peace doesn't enough if the stomach goes hungry...
The younger generation believes that they can only dream in the land of skyscrapers overlook the run-down neighborhood she lives in. Naomi's sister was one of them, she runs away from home five years ago, leaving behind her aging parents with her little sister to live a better life herself.
Naomi's parents knew that only the best education can save them in the future, thus, they mortgage their house to enroll Naomi in the best high school in town, they are now left with hopes and debt.
Naomi holds her blazer closer to her body as a gust of night breeze blew. The footsteps behind getting her even more irritating. The determined Nelson Kim is still walking her home from behind as always even when Naomi had warned him to stay away from her.
At one point, Nelson Kim had touched her heart, but she restrained herself from falling to it. She refuses to become softened as she needs strong pulls to make her tougher.
He is someone born with a silver spoon in his mouth when it comes to hardship, sooner Nelson will also leave her, just like her sister did to them. Living is hard but her parents never fail to complete their basic needs, still, Nora doesn't hesitate to break their parent's hearts.
Naomi fastened her pace, determined to make Nelson gives up to the winding and hilly alleys to her house.
"Naomi!"
Nelson doesn't want to miss the chance to talk to her this time. He is an athlete, matching her speed is nothing to him. Catching her wrist, he holds her in place.
"Let me go!"
"No. Not this time. Give me a chance, please? How long are you going to avoid us? Forever?"
Without batting eyes, Naomi stared coldly at Nelson as he loosened his grips. "Say what you want to say now and NEVER talk to me again." She hissed.
Letting out a sigh, Nelson relaxed the tightened muscles on his face, "It hurts to see you like this. Holding on, while I am always behind you. Give me a chance Naomi."
Every word that comes out from Nelson's lips does nothing to drain the cold demeanor in her. She doesn't want to believe there is a good person who exists.
"First of all, you are someone who keeps meddling with my affair, you are irritating me. Second, none of my problems have anything to do with you." She sternly said as she tries to get away from Nelson.
Again, Nelson gets a hold of her arm. "It matters to me." Replied Nelson, forcing Naomi to face him again. "I like you, Naomi... I'm tired of beating around the bush, I'm telling you now, I love you."
Dazzled with his blunt confession, Naomi staggered but quickly restrained her feeling. The corner of her lips formed a cynical smile. "Love?" She asked. "I'm busy getting away from this misery of living a poor life. Are you insulting me now? Get lost!" Losing her patience, she pulls away from Nelson's firm hold and turns away.
"I saw everything, Naomi," Nelson said out loud.
Naomi froze in her place. Blood draining down from her head to toe, leaving a chilly sensation on her whole body.
Did he see it?
How much did he witness?
Is he going to threaten her with the darkest secret of her?
With her trembling hand, she closes her gaping mouth. The coldness in her eyes melted into worrisome, like a kitten losing its mother, helpless and terror-stricken.
Nelson sauntered towards Naomi, standing in front of her. His eyes were soft, looking fixedly at the girl he loves letting her guard down, revealing her true color; the strong on the outside yet fragile inside.
"I know everything, Naomi... In your eyes, it is always been, Samuel. Right? That's the reason you are staying away from Lana. Did I guess it right?"
She had almost suffocated herself for holding out her breath. Turn out what Nelson knew is not something she expected. Catching her breath again, tears were welling up and uncontrollably rolling down her cheeks too. Soft sobs escape her lips though she didn't want to cry as her heart betrayed her.
"Naomi... I'm sorry... I didn't..." Nelson started panicking. Juggling whether to comfort her or wipe her tears away or what exactly he has to do at this kind of moment! He is totally dumbstruck by the sudden occurrence. "Naomi..."
She ignored him, walking away from him with tears keeping her cheeks wet. "Go away." She said without even looking back at him.
It's hurt, her heart is aching.
Yes, she is secretly falling in love with Samuel Jin. Samuel had always looked at Lana though she is always there, standing beside her.
Lana never realized all of this... She had always been the luckiest and the one with a kinder heart. While everyone looks down on her for her lowest status, only Lana stands for her.
She had wanted to befriend Lana, just by seeing Samuel Jin is enough. She is willing to let Lana have him, she deserved someone like him. Yet, fate is still cruel to her...
Fate won't even have a little sympathy for her though she had crawled out from living in hell.
Luck had always been by Lana's side.
Even if she wanted to start new, things will never be the same again.
"I'm dirty. I'm a monster, you will be disgusted if you knew what I have done." She whispered as if Nelson is listening to her. "It's too late... Nelson. I'm a ruined person."
Nelson watched Naomi back unable to do anything. Sorrow overwhelmed him as her lonely stretched long shadow disappeared behind the little house gate.
Day 2 of tracking Naomi and Harry's mission. Gosh... I sighed to a long exhale of boringness. Why on earth does Samuel have to put me on them? They are merely future scholars, only studies excited them. I am aware that I have developed a new habit of biting my nail recently. Gross, this is a bad omen, what is next? Even Naomi still refuses to talk to me, she rather spends her time alone. I pity myself, oh... Closing my notebook in frustration having the whole class turn to me. A moment of silence, then they return to their desk, leaving me in an awkward situation. Samuel makes a hand signal asking what was wrong with me, but I just waved my hands acknowledging him that it is nothing to worry about. Looking at the wall clocks showing five more minutes to 4:30 p.m, our free time for club activity will start soon. Naomi was in art while Harry
"Let me go, Nelson!" Naomi harshly pulled away from him as soon as Lana and Samuel disappeared from their view. "What's wrong Naomi? What did I do to you that you despise me that much?.." "As I said. Nothing wrong, just stay away from my business." "No. It's not going to happen. I'm not going to let you go. At least I won't." "Don't make me repeat myself!" Holding up the rage buckling in her, she makes sure Nelson heard her well this time. "Stay. Away. From. Me." "NO." Nelson gets a hold of her arm before she gets the chance to run away again. "Give me a chance, let us prove that we are not meant to be together." Nelson hadn't staggered from his position, inoffensive by Naomi's harsh attitude toward him. "Give me a chance." He said, almost half whispering. As if the time had frozen, for a second, Naomi had listened to him. Their eyes locked, and a
The hot day of the day is beginning to subside as the sun is going down. Naomi and Nelson take a seat on the bench by the riverbank overlook from the bustling of the metropolitan Sillas City."Promise me, from now on, never turn your back on me again." He muttered.Naomi paused, staring into the eyes of a boy who wanted to be with her persistently, Naomi lost, the stone-cold heart of her melted a little by little, starting to warm her from the inside."Naomi..."The way he speaks her name awakens her soul. Urging her to feel human again. After the bad encounter with her uncle, she has no reason to be happy anymore. In her subconscious mind, man is a monster. Being strong, they only wanted to conquer the female and threaten the weakest.But...Why is there another one other than Samuel Jin in front of her, denying every thought that she had in a male?"Naomi? Hello? Are you alright?" Nelson waves to her face, trying to get her attention.Directing her view to the other side, Naomi sighe
In the heart of the most luxurious neighborhoods of Sillas City, the Hills of Moon Village is ironically stuck in a re-development that is still in progress after so many years due to the terrain. Thus, if there is the unurgent business to settle, the villager won't bother to go through the unwinding stairways alley just to get to the city as the basic essential supplies still can be acquired from the row of old shops which I barely remember, consist of a barbershop, little cafe, and a groceries martYet, Naomi is going through the same route daily to get to the school. I almost admired her strong will, looking back to check on Samuel, I had caught Samuel had been wiping away sweats many times."Are you alright, Sam?" I deliberately ask just to check whether he regrets his decision to go with me this morning."I'm good, watch your steps." In his breathy voice, he replied."We are almost there," I said, showing him the significant gate at the end of the alley.Ringing the bells, we are
"What?"Once again we are exclaiming the same question to the fact. There is really a bundle of newfound information that surprises us.Gently, Mrs. Jang pours the tea into our glass cups, her hands are steady in her age. Drawing back to her seat, her bitter smile reflected as the poignant memory resurface."Indeed, he is my half-brother. I don't pledge for Naomi, she has the reasons why she is ashamed to declare his own uncle." She demurred. "Growing up, he had always cast problems. Drugs, gambling, and debts from the loan shark, always gave my mother heartache and disappointment. My mother died soon later, having no one else to depends but for me, my family is living in hell soon afterward. " Tears welling up in her eyes, threatening to fall at any time."Aunty... it's alright. The bad memories are best left behind." Samuel puts his hands on hers, retaining her from being sad all over again."Son, as a mother, I'm alright, I'm strong. But, my pity daughter, Naomi's fate, is what brea
Good weather is a good day, I tell myself. Wiping away the droplets of sweat from my forehead, I push the left-ajar gate wide. "Naomi?" I called to her as I shut the gate properly behind me. Am I too early? I wondered; it seemed like even Mrs. Jang was not around either. I proceeded to the front door, and knocked, "Naomi?" The unlocked door sound startled me; Naomi was at the door. "Come in, my mom has gone to the market." She said as she held the door, letting me into her house. Naomi, how are you? I'm glad to see you again. " "I'm good." She replied in her cold undertones. Bolting the door behind me, she takes my hand, leading me into her bedroom, where we always spend time after school during the first year of middle school. Naomi's unusual behavior had me pondering the reason she called me in, yet I decided to hear her out. I take a look around. Her bedroom hadn't changed much, everything is in place and neat as usual. Books were sprawled on her study desk, indicating that
"Cheers to our Nelson first girl!!" They yelled joyously over the non-alcoholic cocktails. Glasses clinking. Naomi's cheeks were almost burned by the surprise arranged by Nelson at the private yacht club lounge belonging to his family.
It is past 10:30 pm after our late night revision class, I definitely disapprove of doing study at this hour. But this is the only way I can avoid getting home earlier, mom wouldn't be allowing me to go to Samuel's house for the sake of studying, and definitely, a boy coming to my house to study with me is a no-no. And so here am I, sitting on Samuel's passenger side, trying to stay awake on the 25 minutes drive home."You keep dozing off, Lana. Tired?" Asked Samuel while his gaze concentrates on the road."Hmm..."I mumbled, lazily turned to him, "Yeah, Luca have an episode again last night.""Just close your eyes then, I will wake you up later," Samuel suggested."Sure," I replied in brief. Silly, my eyelids are heavy, I would be glad to be granted 10 minutes of eyes close. I just don't want to be rude, having Samuel drive me home while I was asleep. Giving up on trying to stay awake, I let the slumber take me in.I was floating in a soundproof vicinity, allowing the waves to lull me
The room felt heavy with unspoken tension, the kind that seeped into the walls and lingered like a storm waiting to break. Jason stood near the window, his hands clasped tightly behind his back, gazing out at the city skyline. The glittering lights mocked him, a chaotic reflection of the battle raging inside. His jaw tightened as he exhaled slowly, the sound barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning.Behind him, Jerry sat at the table, methodically sorting through his medical bag. The precise clink of glass vials against one another was the only sound, a steady rhythm in the charged silence.“Jerry,” Jason began, his voice low, almost a growl. “I need your help.”He didn’t look up immediately, but Jason noticed the subtle stiffening of his shoulders. When Jerry finally met his gaze, his expression was guarded, his movements deliberate as he closed the bag.“I’m already helping you, Jason,” Jerry said coldly. “More than I should.”Jason turned, his expression dark. “We’re not
I lay motionless, every inch of my body weighed down by exhaustion. Outside the bedroom door, I could hear them.Jason and Jerry, discussing my condition in hushed tones.I strained to catch snippets of their conversation, words like "dosage" and "observing" drifting through the crack. They sounded calm and steady, but to me, it felt more like they were plotting my imprisonment. Then I noticed it.Jason's phone rested on the seat where he usually sat while keeping watch over me. The screen glowed, a recent message half-typed, abandoned in his haste to follow Jerry. My heart thundered in my chest, adrenaline surging through my veins. This was my chance.Ignoring the throbbing pain in my stitched hand, I dragged myself to the edge of the bed, fingers outstretched toward the phone. I trembled, fighting to steady my breath. My mind raced as I navigated to the contacts list.Nelson.He was my only hope. After the heated argument with Jason days ago, I clung to the belief that Nelson would n
For the next two days, the walls seemed to close in, inch by inch, and despair began to creep into my bones. I had hoped that playing the part, feigning obedience, would give me some space—maybe a chance. But Jason didn't leave the apartment.Still, he stayed, his presence shadowing me with its quiet, unnerving calm. Most meals arrived at the door, delivered with barely a sound, a silent reminder that I was cut off from the outside world. Jason set up his laptop on the counter, working without a word. Though he gave me the freedom to roam the living room, even watch TV, it felt orchestrated. As if he wanted me to feel relaxed enough to drop my guard.I tried to distract myself with the television, flipping through channels for anything that could pull me from this claustrophobic existence, but nothing caught my interest. Every laugh track, every news anchor's voice felt hollow, echoing against the surrounding silence. There was no way out. Every door locked from the inside, every windo
Jason stepped out of the shower, his movements relaxed as he wrapped a towel around his waist, droplets of water clinging to his skin. He noticed immediately that Lana was not in her room, but it only deepened his calm. He knew that there was no possible way for her to get out.He had seen to it. She was safely contained, her every means of connection to the outside world secured or removed. He'd thought through each scenario, each potential escape, and he knew with certainty that the only way she was leaving was with him, to Granata. As he dried his hair in his room across from Lana's, Jason glanced at the clock on the living room wall. The time was nearly up. He needed to change her bandage. He draped the towel around his shoulders, with a steady breath, he padded toward the kitchen, a small smile curving as he found her there, sipping a glass of water. She turned at the sound of his approach, her expression calm but distant, masking the tension he knew was hiding underneath."I hope
My arm throbbed lightly, a raw, stinging reminder of the wound left from yesterday. I winced, testing the movement, but relief washed over me when I realized it wasn't deep enough to slow me down.I needed to move fast, to be quiet. The shower hissed from behind the closed bathroom door, the only sound in the apartment. I took a quick, steadying breath. If there was ever a time to get out, it was now.I padded across the living room, feeling every muscle tense with purpose. When I reached the front door, my fingers went to the lock.I froze. That unyielding panel of numbers stared back at me, unmovable and impassive. I punched in the only codes I thought might work. Birthdays, common combinations, even random sequences. But each attempt ended with a sharp, unforgiving beep. My heart hammered in my chest. He had activated the security locked down system, blinking red with each failed entry. With growing dread, I tore my eyes from the door and cast a frantic glance around the apartment.
I blinked awake, my eyes adjusting to the dim light as I took in the soft shadows of the room. My hand throbbed slightly, wrapped in a fresh bandage. The antiseptic smell lingered, a reminder of how closely Jason had hovered over me. It felt like a weight pressing on my chest, this feeling of being caged. I needed to get away, away from his grip that seemed to tighten with every passing day.I shifted on the bed, letting out a quiet sigh. A warm hand squeezed my shoulder, gentle yet firm. Jason's voice reached me through the haze, soft and careful. "Hey, you’re waking up. I’m here.”Blinking, I opened my eyes, struggling to bring the world around me into focus. My mind felt heavy, muddled, and it took a moment to recognize where I was. Jason’s face hovered over me, a faint, reassuring smile on his face. The sunlight seeped through the blinds, casting soft, crisscrossed shadows over the room, grounding me slightly in its warmth. As I looked around, my eyes caught on the IV bag, nearly d
Lana began to stir, Jason felt a flicker of hope. He gently squeezed her shoulder, his voice low and soothing. "Hey, you're waking up. I'm here." Her eyes fluttered open, revealing a mix of confusion and fatigue. He smiled reassuringly, hoping to ease the disorientation that seemed to cling to her.The sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting soft shadows throughout the room. He glanced at the IV line, noting that the bag was nearly empty. The remnants of the medication administered by Jerry would soon be out of her system, and he hoped that would bring Lana back to herself."Here, drink this," he said, pouring warm water into a glass. He carefully raised it to her lips, watching as she took small sips. "You need more restful sleep." He added, wanted to ensure she felt comfortable and cared for."Jerry came by to check on you earlier," Jason explained, keeping his tone gentle. "He set up the IV to help you recover. It's almost done now." He gestured toward the line on her arm. "He
Jason eased Lana onto the bed, taking care to settle her comfortably before pulling the blankets up snugly around her, cocooning her in warmth. He brushed his fingers gently through her hair, smoothing out any strands that had strayed, letting them slip like silk through his fingertips.A mix of tenderness and guilt deep within him stirred, he lingered a moment longer, his gaze tracing her face as she slept, realizing just how far he had gone to keep her close, even if it meant crossing lines he'd once vowed never to cross.Making sure she was settled comfortably, Jason moved to close the blinds, casting the room into darkness, softening the edges of reality. The dim light created a quiet cocoon around them, shielding her from the world beyond those walls. He lowered himself onto the mattress beside her, the mattress creaking slightly under his weight. He observed closely as the tension in her expression eased, her brow softening as the pain began to recede. Her bandaged hand lay limp
I sat on the edge of the bed, gathered my belongings with trembling hands, stuffing clothes and a few personal items into a suitcase. I promised myself I would return once things were stable. I can't stay here any longer. Not after everything that had happened, not after the mess we were in.Jason had been kind, too kind, but everything had spiraled out of control. I couldn't face him. Not after what he'd done, after the lines he crossed. The guilt gnawed at me, and I couldn't tell where my own sense of shame ended and his manipulation began. I needed to get out.I needed to breathe. As I zipped the suitcase shut, a wave of panic tightened around my chest. What would Jason say? What would he do? My mind flashed back to our last confrontation, the way his eyes had burned with hurt and anger.I took a deep breath and opened the bedroom door, cautiously stepping into the hallway. The living room was empty. No sign of Jason.Maybe he'd gone out. Keeping my steps light, I wheeled my suitca
