The inn became eerily silent as everyone who stayed there gathered to see the drama unfold. The hallway filled in, leaving every room empty.
The two sisters looked at the man in front of them. Cheng Min fidgeted as she felt something cold on her neck. She looked at the shiny object slightly bending sideways to see that she was the target. The sword was nearly cutting through her soft white skin. She became confused as to why this man had picked her, instead of the villainess beside her. "How unlucky is she going to be?" She angrily looked at Xue Han who stared back at her with that look he often used to order his man around. That look that sent chills to everyone when they looked him in the eye. That look that willed the victim to render to his command. He wanted to scare the little girls away so that he could get back to sleep. It had been a while since he had a peaceful sleep. He had spent sleepless nights thinking through his plans to defeat the enemy. Now these girls. Surely the heavens did not want to grant him some sleep. But Cheng Min felt more furious when he called her 'little girl'. She was not a little girl anymore. Could he not see that she was a woman now. Even though they never met, how could this man be so bad at judging her age. She had gotten taller than the last time she left home. She had gotten wiser and brave these past months. How could he call her that? She glowered back at him. She was not afraid of his gaze. She looked at him with the same threatening look that told hidden yet scary stories. The general was surprised to see this little girl staring back at him. She was first. The first to act like she was not afraid of him. But he did not show any trace of surprise. He put on a blank face as he stared at her emerald eyes that were roaming all over his body. Cheng Min observed every detail of this man. He was tall with good looks. She could see that he was a master of martial arts. His postures. The way his bright sapphire eyes would linger at his sides. As if he could see his back view. And she also continued to stare at his masculine body which he hid under the dull black cloth. She was momentarily entranced by his long black hair which he tied at the back, some strands carelessly hanging on his sides. She looked back at his face. His face was more beautiful than most of the girls in the city. She wondered where this man had come from. But that scowl he had, made Cheng Min's opinion slightly waver. She decided to return the favour. "Remove your sword off my neck little boy," she retorted back. Feeling herself loosening up when his scowl deepened. She had managed to click his buttons. Everyone at that moment felt a deadly aura from the man who was standing in front of little beauty Cheng. They could feel themselves trembling from his voice's tone. "What did you just say?" The general fury draped in his voice. He looked at this girl with so much anger, that if he was not known by many people here he would have cut her neck. To set an example for everyone. He only needed to keep the old man's image. He had to persevere with it. Only this time. He comforted himself clutching tight the hilt of his sword that had devoured millions of lives. Whether at war or those that had wronged him. On the other hand, Cheng Min ignored him as she ordered her servant to pack her belongings from their room. She barely noticed the sword shaking as it bruised her neck. "My lord, please forgive my impudent sister, she's foolish, we will immediately leave right away." Exclaimed the other sister as she dragged Cheng Min to save her life. She had been watching everything from the sides. She knew if the little wench continued not only would she lose her life but she would drag her down as well. She really didn't want to die young. Xue Han remained behind feeling angry and sleepy. He watched as the two retreated leaving him alone. And finally, he had managed to scare the flies away. But before he could return to his room to resume his sleep, he saw his men coming towards him. "General, the camp needs you now." One of the men said. The general was confused as to why they needed him this early in the morning. "Wang Fu, take my armour from my room. I am starting to hate this place." He joined his men as they made their way to their camp. The camp was not very far away. It was about one li away from the city. He endured the burning sun to his body. When he was nearing the camp, he felt a strange fit of energy. Maybe he was called to sought this kind of mess. His men gathered as they stood in sequence bowing welcoming their general. Their master, the one who they were proud to die for. They respect him so much. Little did they know a little girl had dared to stand up to their general. If they come to know their general was called 'little boy'. Would they still have the same respect as now? Xue Han unmounted his black horse and acknowledged their loyalty towards him. But he was not too naive to not see through their farce, some were waiting for his downfall so to take his position. Some wanted revenge for those who had died by his hand. Some were spies sent by the officials in the palace. To drag him into their bloody fights. After dismissing his men, he was shown the perpetrator who had sold them out the past two months. He was under one of his commanders named Wu and this spy had managed to sell them out to the enemy. Which resulted in severe casualties. Looking at the man now brought up all the anger that had disappeared a shichen ago back to the present. Right now he did not need to hold back. He could not be held accountable for taking a rat's life. He's doing it for the good of the city, and the emperor. But mostly for himself. To forget what had happened with that girl. He hoped he would meet the girl to take her life. She didn't value it well. He set free his sword and swung it upon the spy's head. It only required some of his skills to get the job done. To leave two parts of the body in disarray as the red liquid flowed indicating that the soul holding the body together had long set to the heavens hopefully seeking for a second chance at life.At Cheng Manor (at night) Two silhouettes could be seen from outside the main house. Two bodies hugging as if comforting one another. The candlelight reflected the couple's shadow on the windows. Cheng Xiao Shi was crying in her husband's arms. The Buddha had once again let her down. She had spent months praying to conceive another child. She could not believe Cheng Min to be her last. The child is too ill-mannered. She sometimes wonders why she was so different from her other children, Cheng Yan and Cheng Sun. Cheng Min had left home a few months ago and now she has returned. Xiao Shi thought her child would come back as a better person, but now she has become much worse. In the afternoon Cheng Min had arrived with Cheng Sun in time for lunch. They had joined in. The meal started peacefully as the family ate quietly but when she had asked Cheng Min's whereabouts from the period she left home. The little devil had reawakened as she rebuffed all her questions and left the meal.
The following morning, the young lady did not even pay respect to her parents. She rather hurriedly left without having any food with her close servant in tow. The two strolled in the street seeing the common folks getting ready as they set up their place to sell their things. She observed everything that was happening, the greetings the people exchanged, the smiles they showed as others shouted at passing people to come to stop by. The two continued to walk down the road looking at the inns and markets as they opened doors to let people in. Seeing the inn she had been in a few days ago, it reminded her of the argument she had with her sister. She could not feel any better remembering a certain someone degrading her. She felt like strangling him and she was certain that the next time they met he was going to die by her hands. "My lady, we have been walking for so long. If you feel tired can I find somewhere to rest? Perhaps get some food, you haven't eaten anything since morning. Y
... On the camp Yiding mountain where the cold ruled over the huge domain. Some tents were set up in a dome shape except one which was quite bigger than the other tents, and it was slightly on the top ground. All were pure white signalling the enemies or the ordinary people to stay away. A couple of red flags which were made of thin silk, flattered in the freezing air. Showing off the head of an eagle drawn in black at its center. The army had been staying at this mountain for a fortnight, waking and training, doing the same routine over and over again. The soldiers sparred with wooden swords, some enhanced their archery at the training ground. No one sat doing nothing, some of the new recruits were helping out with cleaning and wiping the weapons which were dirtied in previous battle. "My lady! Young master is back." Tian Li informed Cheng Min who was busy having her tea early in the morning. It was like any other day during this time when winter was near. Every day she would wake up early and drink her tea before preparing to head out. It has been several weeks since it's been like this. After her return from the town that day, she thought of lying low before planning to do some small business, but who knew that her favourite person would be back. She looked up, her eyes twinkling like stars. She let go of the tea cup which fell with a thud as it shattered on the floor splashing the remaining tea. She didn't mind the mess instead she excitedly stood up and hurried out not even putting on her shoes. As she ran towards her brother, Cheng Yan who at the time had returned home after being away from it since the last winter. He sat in the pavilion with his other sister, mother and father who were busy chirping, asking him about his journey and so on. He wore simple
"Gege, hurry up or we will be late." Cheng Min called out to Cheng Yan who at the moment was taking so long to get some silver and gold pieces from his room to spend on the road. Cheng Min had planned to travel with him after knowing that he was not staying for long. At first, he had refused, telling her that it would be dangerous, he even tried to instil some terrifying images in her head but to vain. His sweet little sister managed to convince him telling him that it was enough that he was there. Of course, the infatuated brother was very glad to know that she depended on him and trusted him with her life. He carelessly gave his word before realizing what he had done in one of those moments. He walked out of his house still feeling worried. "Will you be okay? There are bandits on the way and we will be spending nights outside." "Yes I know but still you shouldn't go back on your word. You agreed so now let's go." She cut him off before he could say anything on the matter. They go
Cheng Yan knew that if he made any careless moves then he would be dead so he did as he was told. "Turn around slowly." The other kept on demanding as he tightened his grip on the sword bringing it closer to his neck. Cheng Yan felt some pain on where the sword had cut. He brought up his hand and pressed on the wound to stop the bleeding. Whilst he was doing all that he also turned around not wanting to aggravate the attacker more. If looks could kill he would have died the moment he took in the image of the man standing in front of him. He was very handsome and looked very cool with the way he was handling his sword with a cold air around him. Cheng Yan took in his image as if he was drinking water. Even his Adam's apple was dancing to every saliva he was gorging down. The wound was long forgotten. When the man noticed him being like that, he scowled. He had never met such a shameless person before. After all, everyone feared him except that little girl he met at the inn. When h
While sitting in a cold dark room, Cheng Yan looked through the bars that was restricting his freedom. He wanted to check if the guards were still on their shift. When he found no one he rose quietly not wanting to disturb his little sister's sleep. After checking to see that she was sleeping comfortably, he turned away and took a few steps toward the small window where some moonlight was entering through. He whistled softly for a couple of times and stopped as if he was waiting for something to appear. In a while, he heard flapping sounds as if something was approaching him. A white pigeon landed on the window seal, on it's leg there was a small pouch where he put on a letter he had written during the day. He was fortunate because he always travelled around with paper and ink which he would hide somewhere in his clothes. He was also lucky because when the guards searched him they didn't find it on him. After successfully putting the small piece of paper on the bird, Cheng Yan spoke
Xue Han was left in a very bad mood. He clenched his fists tightly, his nails digging deep into his palm. His hand ended up dripping with a trail of blood. All that filled his mind was the way Cheng Yan behaved with him right now. He knew for sure that he was the one who had stolen the supplies. Xue Han wasn't so sure on how he had managed to do it. He laid his back on his chair and rested his head on the palm of his hand. After seeing a pile of reports waiting on the side of the table he picked up a few and started to go through them. It was after a shichen when his deputy came to seek him. He was a little on urge, while informing him on what the crown prince had ordered. Upon hearing Wang Fu mentioning the sibling's names in his report, General Xue Han felt his emotions shoot but he still remained calm. "I will see what I can do about it." Xue Han finished their talk. He stood up and exited the tent. The first thing he did was go to the tent with the supplies to check if anythi
"No. Nothing happened. Don't worry too much." Cheng Yan persuaded her, while caressing her hair, desperate to distract her from asking him any more questions. He did not want to mention what the other man had just asked him, so he chose to keep it to himself. However he knew too well that his little sister wouldn't let it go. That's why he stroke her hair in an attempt to please her. She really loved it when he did that. He had used this method to coax her many times. "Gege, stop it. I know when you are trying to distract me." Cheng Min complained and watched as her brother blushed with embarrassment and then hurried her to go inside the house in case she got too many sun burns. "Be careful or else you will look ugly and no one will want to marry you." He shouted after her. She turned to face him and made a silly face before running away and entering their room. Cheng Yan then stood up from his seat and walked away. He needed some time to himself. It was just too much to think when
A few months have passed after his last visit to the siblings. Xue Han found it hard to face them. Especially the woman who couldn't stop popping in his mind. At first he blamed it upon the tea he drank that day but later on he just couldn't keep at it at all. The mighty general managed to sort out his feelings and decided to act upon his heart. Once he woke up, he made his way to the closest stream and took a quick bath in the cold water. He didn't feel the coldness at all for he had grown up in this kind of environment when he was doing his training. And with years he had gotten used to it. His body looked good and was well built due to the work out he had been doing almost all his life. When he was done. He changed into a dark purple robe with beautiful bamboo leaves drawn at the helm. He plaited a handful of hair at one side and tied the rest into a pony. Some were left at the front where it fell into a pretty fringe. When he was satisfied with his look. He got onto his war ho
The general took a sip of his tea before bringing it to his nose letting the steam enter his nostrils. He wanted to make sure if it was the same as his late mother's. To his surprise everything was just similar, the taste, the temperature and the amount of sugar put into it. He gently put the cup down and looked at Cheng Min. "Where did you learn to brew this tea from?" He asked desperately trying to find some clues. Cheng Yan was confused, this was just ordinary tea, anyone could make it. Cheng Min also thought the same. No one had taught her any skills in brewing tea. She just made it randomly. "Nowhere. It's simple. Do you want me to teach you how?" Cheng Yan answered back, she honestly wanted to help him. "No thanks. It just reminded me of someone." Xue Han answered softly. He remembered her soft smile and delicate facial features. When he looked up from staring at the image in the tea he was greeted by Cheng Min's face which was smiling widely at her brother who was refilling
