Hey everyone, this update is to bring some sad news. I will no longer be updating this story here as I feel as an author it is too expensive for the readers. I like making my chapters at least 3k words because I pack a lot into one chapter and I am unable to do that with a word limit of 1500-2k (to keep my chapters affordable I need to keep them between that word count). This story is dragging on because I'm trying to figure out how to keep it at a good pace while also keeping the chapters short and sweet. I'm afraid I'll either make the story too fast or as I am making it now, too slow. I am unable to find a healthy balance and this story is starting to become more of a burden than a joy like it originally is supposed to be. It will still be available on my other sites which are free to read. I would love to continue writing on here but too many times I've run into this issue with my stories and I've tried to cut down but that isn't the kind of writer I am, I'm sorry :( Please feel
“Serenia! Serenia Hansen! Where is that child? She was supposed to be back an hour ago with breakfast! Slacking off, no doubt, bah!”The head chef, Maria, hangs her burly body out the side door of the manor and shouts into the crisp morning fog, but no voice is heard in response. Scrunching up her nose in disgust she wobbles her way back inside, just as a small crop of white-blonde hair comes bounding up the hill, several catches of hares in her hand.“Maria, wait! I’m here don’t lock it!” the girl cries out, nearly tripping over her feet and scurrying up the slick dew-covered grass.“About time girl. What were you doing, sleeping in the woods again? You know the Missus likes her stew first thing in the morning, and it will be you getting the spoon on the back if you’re late one more time.”Serenia turns her back to Maria to hide her sneer.“My mother likes rabbit stew as well, you know.”The wooden spoon stirring in Miss Maria’s hand stills, and she turns to Serenia.“Last I checked,
2 Years Later… The Wolfmane TribeThe bright morning sun breaks through the slightly pulled-back curtains, but that isn’t what abruptly wakes up Kai from his deep slumber after a night of partying and celebrating Niklas after his coming-of-age ceremony. It was definitely a night to remember, but the morning seems to be one to forget.Dragging himself out of bed, Kai pulls on a pair of sweatpants and opens his bedroom door to see what all the noise is first thing in the morning and sees the house staff rushing around the halls with brooms and mops and various other cleaning supplies.“What is going on?” he manages to ask one worker as he runs past.“Oh, your Highness, my apologies. Have you not heard? We’re expecting important guests to the main house, so we’re preparing everything for their arrival.”He rushes off again with a bow before Kai has the chance to question him more.Special guests? Father said nothing about this. After putting on more appropriate attire, he leaves his roo
“Where did you sneak off before dawn? Gunnar was looking for you during headcount, you know how he gets during procedures,” Kai chuckles, watching Niklas duck through the shrubs.Brushing off the few leaves that gathered on his clothes he shoots Kai a disgruntled look and walks past him without answering.Kai follows after him nonetheless with a grin on his face.“Anyway, we’re all ready to head off, I’m just missing my second-in-command.”“Stop calling me that, you haven’t even had your Alpha ceremony yet. Technically, I’m the only one here with any sort of title or rank, so that makes you my second-in-command,” Niklas says with a smirk.“You know I don’t care for any of that anyway, as long as we get this over and done with as quickly as possible, that’s all I care for.”“You and me both, brother. Come on, the group should be ready to depart now.”Kai and Niklas rejoin the small group that has been sent as the delegation party from the Wolfmane Tribe to represent them. Led by Kai an
“Unbelievable. How long do they expect us to stand here like this? Why are we even here?” Skai complains as she has since the ceremony started, bouncing from one foot to the other on the spot. Serenia chuckles beside her but remains silent, knowing if there is anyone to be reprimanded for anything it’s her.“Don’t you think it’s important for you to be here to support your sister? She is becoming the future Luna of our great tribe. Isn’t that exciting?” Lady Helda, Skai’s mother whispers next to her with a content but blank smile. She is what Serenia calls a sheep in wolf’s clothing, following the herd rather than ever leading it, she just does what she is told and doesn’t ask questions she doesn’t care to know the answer to.Simple-mindedness isn’t always the best form of survival, but it seems to be working for Lady Helda, who has always given Serenia the feeling that she wasn’t completely on board with her marriage as she leads everyone to believe.“Exactly, today is all about Save
Serenia finds herself on top of the roof with Skai as she has many times before, but tonight it feels different. It doesn’t feel like her sister is merely entertaining her presence out of boredom and trouble sleeping, she genuinely wants to spend time with her to finally get the truth off her chest.“I actually found my mate a few years ago, around the age I turned 14, but he managed to discover me first,” Skai starts off by saying.Serenia always wondered but didn’t think it had been that long ago, Sareen turning 20 this year.“What happened, why aren’t you together?” she asks.“As you know, I hadn’t managed to manifest my wolf spirit until the next year, so I didn’t feel the mate bond between us. I rejected it without actually rejecting it since my side of the bond hadn’t formed yet.”She pauses and glances at Serenia, whose entire body has frozen.“Wait, what are you saying?” she whispers.“I’m saying what everyone has been keeping a secret from you for whatever reason, that your w
After a long silence, it is Savea who breaks it. “You’ve spewed more believable words than this, Serenia, but claiming to be the next High Alpha’s mate is a little immature. Don’t you think, father?” she asks, hooking to their father’s arm like she didn’t just get smacked to the ground minutes ago. Omega Brant glares down at his daughter. “What nonsense are you shouting about? Tell me the truth, or I’ll damn you to your room for the rest of your life!” “It is the truth, he claimed it himself at the ceremony last night!” Serenia cries, never feeling so desperate to have everyone believe something she can’t even believe herself. “A rejected mate is never given a second chance,” he says calmly to her. At his words, a pain stabs her deep in the chest, reminding her of the days she was writhing in agony in her bed from the rejection of the mate bond, her father never once visiting to check on her wellbeing. “Why don’t we have the future High Alpha and his entourage, join us for dinner
Serenia leaves Kai in the forest after once again turning down his offer to live with him – her one chance at a better life. With the brief interactions she has had with Kai in the short time they’ve met, she can already tell he would be ten times a better mate than Rune or any other male in this tribe ever would be. He is disgusted by the idea of multiple wives and fake mates and has treated Serenia with more respect and care than any other has ever given her. But that isn’t enough to make her turn her back on her mother. If she can’t go, Serenia doesn’t either. The goal is to get a better life for both through Serenia. Despite her resolved feelings, she can’t help but also feel torn and guilty for rejecting Kai. She had felt nothing but guilt from the moment they met for not being able to feel any sort of mate bond between them as he claims, but she also couldn’t feel the one between her and Rune. The only proof she has that she was in fact bonded to Rune was the blinding pain sh

Serenia awakes alone in the morning with no sign of Kai, other than the slightly crumpled sheets on one side. She prefers this, being unsure how to react after a restless night of sleeping next to each other, this way she can lay in bed for a little while before she expects Sir Olsson at her door for morning training.Washing her face quickly in the bathroom she changes into her training uniform and waits for Sir Olsson, but at least an hour passes, and no one has even come to offer her breakfast. She decides to wait a few more minutes before going to check the hall to ask a servant. She catches one rushing by the room and calls for him to stop.“Do you happen to know where Sir Olsson is?” she asks.“Oh, my lady, what are you still doing here?” he asks in a panic. She looks behind her, thinking he might be speaking to someone else, but that is ridiculous as she is the only one in the room.“Where else am I supposed to be?”“In the aura room! You’re supposed to be undergoing your test
I accidentally titled the last chapter as #20 but it is in fact chapter #24 parts 1 and 2. I'm sorry for the confusion, they should be fixed soon! ~*~*~*~*~ “I could ask you the same thing. What are you doing here, Serenia? Off to ruin someone else’s happy ending?” Rune asks with a sneer.“What are you talking about?” Serenia starts backing away while looking at the door, wondering where the servant that Kai said is going to be there has gone.“It wasn’t enough to have your sister’s happiness, you have to try and take my sister’s? What the hell kind of black aura are you wielding to have wormed your way into the future High Alpha’s bed?” Rune continues to take steps closer to her, cornering her against the greenhouse glass.“I didn’t do anything! He chose me and brought me back here, because I am a mate he isn’t going to reject for some fake.” She tries to shove him as hard as she can, but he doesn’t budge, staring at her with shock and anger.“What did you say?” he whispers.“That’
Kai isn’t kidding when he says he prepared something for them in the greenhouse. There is a small round table decorated with vines along the legs and flower petals scattered on the ground. The table is filled with pastries and steamed plates, the sun glinting off the glasses. It’s like a scene straight out of a fairytale painting, something she might see in one of the many books Harbin had her looking at. She feels as if she is being treated like a princess despite her plain attire of a white cotton shirt and black-dyed silk pants, still, clothes she never imagined herself wearing but nothing close to what a princess or royalty would ever wear. Kai is the perfect gentleman by pulling her chair out and pushing her in, making sure all her utensils are safe to use and testing her food before she can touch it. Once he is satisfied with everything he takes a seat across from her with a timid smile. She can tell he is uncomfortable and unsure of how to start off the conversation and she c
“Oh, you weren’t kidding,” Serenia mumbles as Harbin leads her into a large office with walls lined with bookshelves and a large oak table in the middle of the room with tons more books and instruments on top, most of the chairs covered as well. “What is this place?” she asks. “It’s my office,” Harbin answers with a giddy grin, spreading his arms wide like a child showing off his creation. Only the creation blew up and left this mess. “Your office? Aren’t you a royal guard?” “Well, technically yes, all of us warriors from the lower rank families are, all the higher ranks are mostly generals or officials, like Sir Olsson. But my most important role amongst our members is the pack tracker, scout, and healer. I map all the best routes, track the best prey and the most difficult of assassins, and I have the medicinal properties of every herb and plant right here,” he says and taps his head. “Well, colour me impressed,” Serenia mumbles under her breath but Harbin clearly hears it as he
Serenia is excited for her first day of training, she barely slept a wink the entire night despite knowing being exhausted isn’t going to help her, there was nothing she could do to fall asleep. She isn’t sure what to expect for her first training but assumed it would have some physical endurance to it.The 50 laps she has been running is the last thing she expected.Sir Olsson started off her training rather harshly with 50 push-ups, 50 sit-ups and now 50 laps around the yard. She didn’t know her body could produce this much sweat without a single drop of water before she started her agonizing journey.“Only 10 more to go, my lady!” Sir Olsson cries out from the other side of the yard where he lounges under the shade of a tree.Serenia lets out a loud groan and pushes herself a little harder to run faster and get this over with. She can’t imagine what he has planned for her next after all of this.Once her laps are done, she collapses to the dirt-covered ground, every bone in her bod
“The next Luna of your tribe is not the true mate of your Alpha?”Serenia didn’t know what to expect when meeting the High Alpha of the Wolfmane Tribe, but she had an idea before arriving at the War Room where the beast never leaves. And a beast this man is.High Alpha Erik towers over Serenia by at least two feet and is built like a darn barn. He has vibrant blue eyes that seem to pierce the soul and a large black beard covering his face almost up to his eyes, the rest covered by long braided hair. She feels as small as a snail in his presence, but his commanding attention is solely on her. After Serenia shared with Kai that her sister Savea and the new Alpha of the Raseri Tribe are not mates he demanded to speak with his father.Serenia wasn’t expecting him to bring her along.“Yes, sir, that’s correct. My sister is the current Luna of our tribe, but she is not the mate of Alpha Rune.”“How can you confirm or prove this?” High Alpha Erik asks. She pauses and looks hesitantly at Kai,
Their conversation is interrupted by a curt knock at the door and the guard that Sir Olsson placed at the door enters. “His Royal Highness, Sir Kai, is requesting permission to –” “Let me in, Viktor! You have no right to guard the door!” Kai bellows from outside the door, which the guard promptly closes behind him. Sir Olsson lets out an exhausted sigh and a small chuckle. “Well, I believe that’s my cue to end this conversation, as lovely as it has been, my lady.” Serenia stands up with him to walk him to the door, fiddling with her fingers the entire way, unsure of how to properly see someone off. “This has been an absolute delight and pleasure, Miss Hansen. I look forward to the next time I see you, which is hopefully on the training grounds,” Sir Olsson says and picks up her hand to place a polite kiss on the back of her hand in farewell before seeing himself out. As soon as the doorway is cleared,
Sir Olsson stares awkwardly at Serenia for a few seconds before clearing his throat.“I can’t comment on the rumours and dramatics that have gone around since you’ve arrived, it was a very sudden surprise for most of us and we were unsure how to react when our future High Alpha declared he had finally found his mate and brought her home – but she is severely injured.”Seeing it from his point of view does help her understand how others might be perceiving her sudden arrival here, only seeing it as herself getting out of a bad situation and escaping to one with a promise of a better life. How can she expect everyone to welcome her with open arms?“Why is Aurora Iversen here?” she asks.“I suspect the reason she originally arrived is no longer valid, however, this was before we knew of your existence and I’m sure before Kai was aware too. She was to be a potential marriage candidate, the only actual one left in the eyes of High Alpha Erik, who hopes to be able to pass down the title to
