It all happened in the blink of an eye.
One moment Lunaria saw Aaron standing, the next, Xander had him in his clutches, hurling him to the ground and slamming his fists in his face. She stood, her mouth wide agape as she saw the man whom she had slowly developed a crush on beat up her long time friend who had slowly become obsessed with her. She could hear Aaron's grunts of pain, she knew he deserved them but she had begun to feel guilty so she gently called on the man. "Mr Xander." She whispered, "That's enough!" Xander got off immediately, sliding Aaron to the side and he got up, clutching his nose and running for his bike, cycling off in the opposite end without being told off and Lunaria had a feeling that she would never have to worry about him again. "Are you alright?" Xander whispered stepping closer to her, he wore a smile to ease her seeing that she was scared, "He didn't hurt you, did he?" She shook her head and held closely onto her duffel bag, "Thank you for interfering, I should get going." "No please." He protested calling to her softly, "At least let me drop you off." Lunaria didn't want to be seen around him knowing that if her mother found out, she would be in trouble. She could use a lift as she was weak from all that walking, no food and a part of her was half scared that Aaron might ambush her to get revenge. "It's alright sir." She placed her chin up giving him a small smile, "I would be fine." "Call me Xander." He stepped closer to her, and a chuckle came from him when he heard her stomach rumble, "Please let me get you dinner and drop you off, it's late." "I can manage, thank you." She turned around and attempted to move but instead she swayed due to fatigue falling back and crashing into Xander's arms. "Easy." He whispered wrapping his arm around her waist and bringing her close, "Please, let me take you." She had no strength to even respond, she closed her eyes gently as he carried her in his arms walking towards his car. "What would you love to eat?" He inquired opening his car door, "Would you like a heavy or a light meal?" "Anything would do." Lunaria whispered softly as he settled her in the seats, "Your car smells nice sir." His response was a soft laugh, he got into the car and started it, and she heard him murmur something about getting her Italian before driving off leaving Lunaria to recline against the seats, the scent of the car lulling her into sweet slumber. Xander drove to a restaurant, he parked the car and smiled at the sleeping beauty before leaving to get some food and he hoped she would be awake by the time he got back. When he got back, he found her awake. He gave her a warm look and laid out the food for her to eat watching as she attacked the food immediately, gobbling it down. He tried not to chuckle at how cute she was. He stared at her in wonder, no woman had had him this entranced before and he wanted to keep her close despite them being total strangers. "Lunaria." He called softly and she looked up in surprise like she expected him not to remember her name, "You have something here." He reached out his thumb and wiped the corner of her mouth gently. She looked away shyly concentrating on her food, his action leaving her speechless. "You really are enjoying yourself." Xander commented as she cleaned off some drumsticks, "You have got a huge appetite." "I haven't had food this good in a while." Lunaria said absentmindedly not noticing the frown on Xander's face, "It is really good, thank you, sir." "Call me Xander." He corrected, "Please." She shrugged and continued to eat. "Are you from around here?" He asked her as he retrieved a napkin to hand over to her. "I am ." Lunaria whispered, "I am done eating." She called, "I should clear this up " "Don't bother Lunaria." He said her name so smoothly that it caused her skin to tingle , she watched as he cleared the takeout, wrapping it in a bag, and going out of the car to dump the trash. He returned with a bottle of chilled water which he opened for her to drink from. "Ah." She took in deep breath after taking gulps from the water, "Thank you very much, Mr Xander." "Just Xander." "Xander." She whispered tasting the name on her tongue. "Better." He offered a smile, "Do you care for ice cream?" "Yes." She nodded vigorously and decided to grab the opportunity to spend time with him before going back, "I like vanilla." "I guess that would be my new favorite from now on." He smiled in my direction, "Lunaria is my top favorite." Her cheeks heated at the compliment as they drove on and she wondered if he didn't find her ugly. He was nice to her and treated her well despite not knowing her and he respected her personal space and privacy, could he be the prince Sasha said would come? Lunaria stayed behind in the car when he went to get ice cream and after he was back, he handed hers over as well as a little package. She left the ice cream and went to open the package. "Calm down sweetheart." He held her hand back gently, "You open the package when you get home." She smiled and nodded before digging into the ice cream. Xander watched her intently and he wanted to ask a lot of questions. "How old are you Lunaria?" "I am 22." She whispered slowly, "You?" "25, I am glad you asked." She said nothing after that and he left his questions wandering through his mind. He wanted to know her identity and know her better. He wanted to find out all about her but she seemed guarded like she didn't trust him yet, it was something he would have to earn. He settled for looking as she got all the ice cream and enjoyed the peace of the quietness. "You are ready to go home?" "Yes." She answered, "I will show you directions." "Just tell me your address and I will put it on the map." "No sir, I can't." Xander didn't argue, he followed her directions and they stopped at a place with random buildings. She got down from the car hurriedly and he followed. "Lunaria." He called out, "You forgot your gift." She turned back to take it but he hesitated on giving it to her, "Let me take you back to your place." She shook her head, "Mr. Xander, please we can't see anymore." "Why not? I have only just known you." "It is for the best." She replied ignoring the sad look on his features and collecting the gift, "Goodbye." "Lunaria please." "Earlier on, you called me "mine," she asked, "What did that mean?" He smiled again stepping closer to her, "You will know soon, if you let me. Just let me see you one more time and know your family if you allow it." "No." She shook her head again, "Goodbye Mr Xander." And with that, she ran off in the opposite direction clutching his gift for her while her mind traveled through memories of their moments together.Xander Ashton had papers spread across his table but the words were like gibberish to him. His head was clouded with memories of Lunaria, the dark beauty who had seemed to capture his heart.Everything about her entranced him, from the way she spoke to the small smiles she offered. She was simple and breathtaking. Not like any other women he had met and he was bent on having her. He wanted to get to know her, know her family and if possible have her as his bride. He knew nothing about her apart from the fact that her name was Lunaria, she was gorgeous, she had a large appetite, and loved vanilla ice cream. She also snored softly when she slept and had a habit of touching her nose with the tip of her finger. He was obsessed. His mother had hinted that he take a bride now and she was perfect for him, quiet, calm, and reserved. Beautiful and easy to please. He tried concentrating on the papers again but Lunaria's face came to his mind and he sighed in frustration, leaning against his
At the St Clair's mansion, the occupants of the house were agog with excitement and preparations. Queen Julia had just gotten off the phone with Madam Ashton, she had informed them that she and her son would be coming over for lunch and might extend till dinner time.Queen Julia had never been happier, she squealed after she got off the call, called the housekeeper immediately, and began dishing out instructions."Call the chef, a five-course meal should be prepared.""Get our golden utensils.""Darling husband!" She called, "Bring out our best-reserved wine.""Clean everywhere! Everywhere should sparkle.""Get our outfits ready.""Everyone get to work!"These were the instructions heard by the house staff as they ran around the place, hoping to please their madam. She had quite a short temper when things weren't done properly and no one was spared from her anger. After she instructed the maids, she went off to her daughter's room. It was nine A.M yet Sylvana was asleep as usual, she
Lunaria was locked up for three days, and on the third day, the door came crashing down followed by the entrance of two furious parents and a sniveling sister. The same old, same old story of her dragging attention from her sister and causing unnecessary drama followed, the insults as well as beatings followed and then the news was finally dropped. She was leaving the country."What?!" She exclaimed getting up from her position, "Where to?""Anywhere but here!" Her mother spat, "I regret the day I laid with your dead father and bore you! You are going to be away from our lives for good, we will give you enough money and you can leave, isn't that what you always wanted, an escape from us?"Lunaria waited for the excitement of leaving to fill her but it didn't. She didn't trust her parents, what if they were trying to traffick her or sell her off? Sasha had told her numerous stories of girls being sold off as sex slaves and that was nothing she wanted to be a part of.She had no educati
Lunaria let out a gasp, shock flowing through her as she tried to scamper from Zander's hold but he chuckled holding her against him and not letting her go."Are you surprised?" He asked her, "I told you I was going to marry you, didn't I?"Zander noticed that she wasn't the only one who was surprised, the St Clairs before him all wore shocked expressions on their faces and he couldn't tell if the shock was coming from a happy or envious place."Are you sure?" Lunaria asked ignoring her family, "You only just know me and I am a -maid." She noted remembering how her own family had just introduced her, "I don't have anything to offer you.""She's right!" Dominic agreed immediately, "You can let go of her now, we can purchase a late ticket for her to leave.""Oh, Mr Zander." Queen Julia clasped her hands in a silent plea, "You couldn't possibly want to marry a stranger and think of what the media would say, they would tear down the poor girl.""I thought you liked me." Sylvana whined thr
Queen Julia screamed for help the moment Sylvana fell towards the ground, her phone falling next to her and sliding across the floor. All occupants of the house rushed to the girl who had fainted.Dominic grabbed his daughter, taking her to the sitting room where she was to be resuscitated, even Lunaria and Xander went after them as well, even though Lunaria knew that her sister hated her, she didn't wish for her to come to harm and worried that she might have hurt herself from the fall. After a while, Sylvana was revived, she sat up immediately, leaning on her mother, her arms went around her and she began to sob."There, there." Queen Julia placed her hand on her back, patting softly, "It is not the end of the world, hmm? Quit your crying and behave yourself." She whispered to her, "We could still find a way to have the upper hand in his situation."Sylvana pulled away from her mother, nodding, and stayed still as her mother gently wiped away the tears on her face, "That's it." Ever since Lunaria had seen Cinderella as a kid, she had often wished to get as lucky as her even though she never believed that she was pretty. She knew that Cinderella had gotten the prince because of her charming looks but Sasha had told her otherwise. Sasha had said Cinderella got the prince through her pureheartedness and patience. She had only wanted to attend the ball but she ended up with a prince. And so with Sasha's words, Lunaria had believed that she too would get her prince someday. She had often imagined the scene, but never had she imagined that it would happen so soon and that it would be a man who had emerged as a rich and powerful man overnight. As elated as she was, she wished that Sasha was alive to experience her on her way to happiness as well as share her happiness with her. "Why do you look sad my love?" Xander asked, closing his palm over her hand, "Is the engagement ring not to your liking? Do you want a bigger one?" "No." she shook her head, "I like
Xander had stated that he had always wanted a wedding on a Friday, he mentioned an outdoor wedding, one taking place in the graceful gardens embodying the surrealness of spring. Lunaria went with it, she loved the idea. She could imagine herself walking down the aisle, her long train hitting the grass, the greenery lifting her mood with the sun rays warming the environment. The date was picked and invites were sent out and of course, one was sent to the St Clairs and it was signed by Lunaria who now went by Madame Ashton not officially but everyone automatically addressed her as that since she is to be Xander's wife. Dominic had been the one to deliver the wedding invite to Queen Julia. The woman who was bridled in bitterness picked about the blue card, she ripped the envelope and brought the card out, holding it with the tip of her fingers and her face morphing into that of disgust. "Who the hell does she think she is now?!" She growled getting up from her seat as she read the d
Lunaria felt light-headed as Aaron continued to speak, she watched as he held onto his coat, walking down the Aisle with lips curled in a sneer and eyes twinkling in anger. All eyes were trained on him, gasps and murmurs sounded from all corners of the gathering with people putting their palms over their mouths, eyes widened in shocked expression as they watched the man who had claimed the bride jilted him for a richer man. "Lunaria and I have been together since high school!" As Aaron spoke, the cameras flashed, reporters swarming to him, "She broke up with me for being too poor and suddenly is getting married to a rich guy!" "That's not true." Lunaria shrieked turning to face Xander who held a calm resolve, "Xander." He gave Lunaria a small smile and reached out his hand to touch her gently, "I know it's not true." He whispered, "I met him remember." But Xander knowing wasn't enough as Lunaria was soaked in embarrassment seeing the dirty looks that the guests were giving her. "
Marco walked away from her, as fast as he could with hands stuck in his pockets, fingers curling in them as he felt his heart rhythm increasing more than usual. The sight of those sad brown eyes stuck with him, the softness of her voice, her inviting beauty, and the way she smiled. It was all embedded in his head. But it was wrong, too wrong. He couldn't desire another man's wife. He shook his head, a bitter laugh coming from him as he brought his hand out of his pocket, the silver band glinting almost mocking him at the way he felt at the moment. The band was a reminder of why he should tame himself and ignore the fire kindling, started by the woman he had saved from falling but he couldn't help himself. She's married, he reminded himself, and on the other hand, you have got a lot going on. He gazed at the band again, a small smile coming to his face, a reminder of his purpose here. He wasn't here to be besotted by a woman. He had loyalty to prove and faithfulness to uphold.
I am married. The words echoed in Lunaria's head causing the warmth she felt from the man to evaporate quickly and she hurriedly pushed against him in an attempt to get off. He released his hold and she slid away from him standing to her feet immediately, her palms smoothing awkwardly over her gown, her eyes darting in all directions apart from him but she could see from her peripheral vision that he had risen, standing up with his palms brushing across his trousers. "Are you alright?" The strange man asked, his voice cascading over her causing a certain coolness and she forced herself to look up at him even with the dimness provided by the night sky. She could see those electrifying blue eyes beneath the mask he wore, she sensed a vague familiarity but she couldn't quite make out his face. She hadn’t met much people in her life. "I am fine." She whispered slowly taking steps back and he gently walked towards her, "I am sorry." "You shouldn't be. You only tripped." "Right." Sh
Lunaria looked down at her chapped fingers, she could hear the laughter coming from downstairs while she was huddled in the bedroom under the pretense that she needed some time alone as she had a headache. Xander had flown in hours ago, she had gone with his mother and sister to welcome him at the airport. She had carefully orchestrated how she wanted to tell him the situation about home as she knew she couldn't die in silence but to her surprise, her mother and sister-in-law were Oscar-worthy actresses. If one were to see them at the airport, they would think that Lunaria was a lovely family member of theirs. The way they talked softly to her, and treated her nicely was something that shocked Lunaria to the core. Xander loved the state in which he met his family, seeing that his mother and sister had warmed up to his wife made him elated and Lunaria noticed this, she couldn't ruin it all by telling him what had occurred while he was away. Madam Ashton and Claire had made it a g
Madam Ashton's words bore venom, her stares as well as Claire's stares towards Lunaria were laced with hate bearing worse malice than she had ever seen. Its okay Lunaria, they are just meeting you. You need to show them you are worth it. She smiled softly at them, trying to push out the words of her mother in law, "I understand the mistake ma'am." she bowed a little, "My apologies for not living up to your expectations but I am Xander's wife. He explained why you both couldn't make it to the wedding." They both stared at her, saying nothing but with gazes that spoke volumes. "I anticipated your coming today mother, sister." Lunaria widened her smile, "I even cooked. You must be famished, I would l-" "Enough!" Claire was the one who barked this time, "Shut the hell up, acting like you are the lady of the house!" "Oh Xander." Madam Ashton took in a deep sigh like she was about to faint, "I asked for a daughter in law and he brought some horrible creature, did he push aside the lov
Lunaria shifted slightly in her seat, she dropped her fork, eyes wandering around to see that the section of the restaurant was almost empty, and Xander was far away at the moment. She could still feel their gazes when she stared down at her plate, she could hear their seats move, and her heart rhythm heightened as they rose from their seats and began to stalk towards her. Their heels clicked against the ground as they walked in her direction making her nervous with each passing moment. You are Madam Ashton now, you should be confident and not let anyone walk over you, chin up, and give them a piece of your mind. She raised her head, directing her gaze to them, there was a smile on her face which was returned with malicious stares that would kill someone on the spot. "Well, well, well." Sylvana shook her head, folding her arms over her chest, "Would you look at you Lunaria, the ugly duckling dressed in the finest of clothing." "Putting lipstick on a pig doesn't make it as gracef
Lunaria was awoken by the aroma of pancakes, she sniffed intentionally, the soreness of her limbs and slight throbbing in her head hitting her as she attempted to move and get up. She felt a kiss on her forehead, her eyes fluttered open immediately and she met the gaze of dark eyes looking down on her with compassion. "Did you sleep well, sweetheart?" Xander asked touching his palm to her cheek, his thumb stroked her chin lightly and he enjoyed the way she smiled leaning into his touch. "I did." She nodded, "I feel sore though, very sore and I ache everywhere." "Don't worry darling." He got up from the bed, "I will run you a hot bath, sit up and have breakfast first." Lunaria managed to sit up due to the excitement bubbling in her at her husband making her breakfast. She watched as he brought a tray before her, setting it on the bed. There was a rose on the tray with she picked up instinctively to smell and after she enjoyed the fresh scent, she gazed upon the tray wide-eye
The wedding banquet had been splendid, Xander Ashton had invited all business partners of his as well as his associates, and the crème de la crème of the society was present to celebrate the day with the new couple. Gifts were presented and speeches were made along with toasts, however splendid it was, it all felt foreign to Lunaria. If she had been raised as she was supposed to, if she was groomed as an heir, she would have been used to all these and know how to socialize but she felt awkward. She tried to smile and wondered if she was smiling too hard, she made small talk wondering if she was disgracing Xander but her husband didn't seem to care, he had a hand placed on the small of her back all through these moments, drawing her close, his smiles comforting her and pulling her through the event. Do you know who you married? Are you married to a man or a monster? These words of the anonymous text she had received echoed through her mind, she had wondered and pondered, watching
