Two years later; Happiness 19, Mason 31
“It's a beautiful campus, isn't it?” I can't count the number of times I've asked that. My heart is filled with excitement as we drive through the campus. Dad, who is sitting across from me, stares at me with a mixture of happiness and sadness. He is happy that I am happy, but he doesn't like me moving out of the house. “You remember the rules, right?” I sigh, and nod. Mom sitting next to him shakes her head knowingly. “Words munchkin." He looked at me disapprovingly. “Yes Dad." Another sigh. “It's just for a session." I muttered. Dad scrutinizes me. “A year, Happy. That's not a short period." He said, sounding offended. “I'm sure during that time she will gain so much from joining one of the best classes of business technology she's been dying to have." Mom said, patting his arm reassuringly. That is the reason he agreed in the first place. “The rules, Happy." “No drinking. No clubbing. No walking alone at night." “And don't talk to strangers on the street." He wags his fingers. “I'm not a toddler, Dad." My voice is laced with frustration. Mom watches us with amusement, shaking her head in disbelief. “You are not. But there are criminals out there. You never know –” “Fine Dad. I get it." I cut him off, not wanting to bear his speech about criminals lurking around. “Good." He said. “And the last one?” “No boys." I said, defeated. “No boys. Absolutely no boys." He said with implacable authority. “God, I'll never meet my soulmate." I muttered. “Maybe I'll just be a nun." “Your soulmate is not in college." He corrected me. “How would you know?” “That's obvious. I'm not allowing you to date yet. So you'll meet him years from now." He said like it's so obvious. “Years? Until I'm 30?” He nods, and it's mom’s turn to sigh. She knows this conversation is endless. Thankfully, he drives into the apartment compound. Rays of sun hit my face as I stepped out of the car when Dad packed. The apartment building is one of the most extravagant I have ever seen. It's so tall and grand, definitely high-class. “I'm going to miss you mom." I hugged her tightly, missing her warmth when we parted. “You’re going to have a great time here, honey." She cups my cheeks tenderly. “Have fun. Meet a lot of friends. Don't stress yourself." She whispers, even though some of her words contradict her husband's statement. Dad is already spreading his arms wide when I turn to him. He engulfs me in a hug and I try my best not to cry when I realized I'll be left alone. “Don’t worry about me, Dad." I said as we pulled away. My heart swelled as I saw the sadness in his eyes. “Okay." He nodded. “Don't forget to always pick up when I call." He smiled, and we hugged each other again. “Yes Dad." I said as we parted. “Remember," He eyes me with a warning look. “Don't skip meals." I fight the urge to roll my eyes, but at the same time I know I'm going to miss this part of him. Now that I watch Mom and Dad leave, there's a battle in my heart. No matter how eager I am to live on my own, it's hard to be away from them. Dad rolled the car window down and they waved at me. “Bye." I say cheerfully, despite the sadness in my chest. “We'll see each other again very soon honey." Mom smiles, knowing they will come here soon to check up on me. “I love you." “I love you, mom." Dad huffs. “I love you Dad." Dad starts driving, and I watch them go until the car disappears behind the property gate. With determination, I stepped back into the apartment. I walked into the lobby and found the security guarding the door. He nods briefly at me, greeting me with a smile. I return his smile politely even though uneasiness stirs inside me from his gaze. The looks he gave me made me shudder, and his eyes are roaming my figure longer than they should. I quickly pass by him even though I can still feel his stare as I walk into the elevator. He had stolen glances at me when my parents were around and were not looking, but I thought it was normal because I'm new. However, now that they are gone, his gaze is uncomfortable. I press the button next to the elevator, and shake my head in denial. I should be worrying about my new semester in college, not about a normal security guard trying to keep an eye on a new occupant of the apartment. I laid down trying to get some rest after the busy day I've had, but my rest was interrupted by the ringtone of my phone. ‘That might be Dad.' I shaked my head as the thought came. Reaching for it, I noticed it was Nadia calling, and picked the call. “Wassup babe." I initiated our conversation and we talked for a while before I started feeling sleepy, and I had to promise to call her tomorrow before she lets me off. I glance at the wall clock. 10PM. How time flies. Before going to bed, I checked the door and the things around me, making sure they were in the right space. I turned off my bedside lamp, causing the room to be dark except the lights coming from the city lights sparkling outside my bedroom window. As I lay my head down on the pillow, my phone rings and I snap my eyes open. I groaned as I grabbed it from the nightstand. “Munchkin, how are you? Did you like the space? Is it comfortable?” Dad's anxious voice rings loudly in my ear. “Can you sleep comfortably? Is there any neighbour –" “Dad." There's a hint of frustration in my voice. “I was just trying to sleep. You've called me four times after leaving today." I heard my Mom chuckling in the background. “I was just wondering if everything is okay over there. I was starting to worry about you not being able to sleep." He said, his voice laced with worry. Even though it's sometimes frustrating, I can't help the smile on my face from knowing how much Dad is concerned about me. “Don't worry so much Dad. Everything is good here." I assured him. “I'm a big girl, remember?” Dad sighs. The call lasts for a few more minutes during which I tell him about my plan for tomorrow. After we hung up, I threw my head on my pillow and went back to sleep. A noise coming from the living room woke me up sometime later, and since I didn't close my door to the bedroom I sat up and faced that direction. I'm positive I was just hallucinating because no one can come inside my apartment unless they have the key. Silence fills the air again. I can feel my heart thumping wildly in my chest. My mind is going crazy from thinking of all sorts of possibilities. I can't even decide which is worse. My heart almost stopped as I heard the door closing. It's impossible to miss the sound of the person's movement in this dead silence. ‘Oh God. It's a burglar.' With a shaking hand, I grabbed the telephone on my nightstand and dialed the operator. They have security guarding the apartment 24 hours. “Good evening. How may I help you?" A voice greets me from the other side of the line. I almost drop the handle of the phone from fear as the shadow moves closer to my bedroom. “Someone just–”, I almost choke due to the panic consuming me. My voice is shaking uncontrollably. “Someone just broke into my apartment." My body goes numb because of how frightened I am. The footsteps are getting closer. The sound of the person's shoes stepping on the wooden floor becomes clearer. “Are you calling from your bedroom, Ms McGregor?” The lady's voice becomes alert in an instant. “If you are, can you lock the door to your bedroom while the security is coming? I'm sending them right now." I shoot up from my bed to do as she told me. Just when I'm about to close the door, a force pushes me back so hard I hit my head on the floor, and I screamed. When I looked up, I saw a man wearing a security uniform staring down at me. He's tall, and even with the small amount of light in the room, I can still recognize his face. He's the middle-aged security guard who was in the lobby downstairs. The sight of him and not a burglar makes me startled. The moment I noticed his dark eyes roaming down my features, chills ran down my spine. He doesn't move, just standing there staring at me like I'm the most precious object in the room. I moved back as my pulse quickens. “What are you doing here?” I asked, even though I know he's not here for his duty. “Are you checking my apartment? But I didn't call anyone." I keep talking, praying that I'm able to buy time before the security gets here. I moved back again, and to my horror he stepped closer to me. He tilts his head, still eyeing me. A calm smile touches the corner of his lips. “Ms McGregor,” his low voice echoes in the room. It's filled with lust and makes my stomach churn. I feel like
I still can't believe what I'm seeing. Mason is walking towards me. The glare he shoots at the officer makes me think he's going to lash out at him, but he focuses his attention on me. The moment he stops in front of the bed, right in front of me, I'm stunned. He's indeed the one. I didn't know that he's in Los Angeles. But then, Smith Enterprises has many branch offices scattered all around the country, and he may be here to take care of business. But he's wearing a police uniform. How? “Mason?” I whispered in a small voice, but it's impossible for him to miss it. He frowns before disbelief crosses his face. “Happiness?” My name comes out of his mouth, sending shivers down my spine and I gasp at the intensity. He tears his gaze away from me and mutters what seemed to be a silent curse. “When the officer told me your name, I didn't expect it to be you. I'm so sorry about this. Are you hurt?." He questioned. “No. I'm fine." I whispered. “This vicinity is under
I woke up with a start, my heart pounding in my chest so fast. The vividness of my dream clung to me, and my cheeks burned. “What the hell was that?” I whispered to myself, burying my face in my hands. My phone vibrated beside me where I left it, bringing me out of my reverie. I checked the time and I sprang up immediately. Past 9, I have to be on the campus by 10am. I overslept. Damn..I ran into the bathroom, and I heard my phone ringing while brushing. I went back inside to check who was calling me. ‘Dad’ I whispered when I remembered where I was but I had to pick up anyway if I didn't want him knocking on my door by evening. “Hi Dad.” I tried to sound excited. “Munchkin, are you just waking up? You have to be in school in less than an hour, and I'm pretty sure you're not dressed”. He scolded. “Dad, I'm not–” I started to defend myself but he interrupted me. “You are still sounding groggy, I'm pretty sure my call woke you up.” He sighed. “I think we've always overlooked this,
Before I can fall face first on the floor, a strong arms helps me regain my balance, and saves me from falling. When I got on my feet, I looked up to my savior, and I found a guy staring down at me, still holding my arms. He has beautiful blue eyes like mine - even his glasses can't make them any less captivating. His hair is brown with messy bangs. I snapped out of my trance when I realized that all eyes were suddenly on us. The guy looks shocked too, and it takes a few more seconds before he let go of me completely. “Thanks.” I said, and he responded with a small smirk. He nods slightly before walking off, and I find it amazing that people were still staring at me even after resuming my steps. My phone buzzes in my pocket, and I roll my eyes as I see who's calling. Dad. He's requesting a video call. I settled down in a nearby seat before picking the call.“Munchkin.” He started, and I showed him my surroundings. He made a zipped lip gesture before telling me he'll talk to me lat
“Happiness”. A voice called out. “Happiness”. Again. I moaned, opening my eyes to Mason shaking me vigorously. He took a deep breath when I opened my eyes. “Damn, Happiness. You just closed your eyes all of a sudden. Are you okay?” He asked, his eyes filled with concern. “Uhn? What happened?” I asked him, looking around and confused. ‘We're still in the backyard. Who interrupted our kiss?’ I wanted to ask, but kept quiet. “I was talking to you, then suddenly you just closed your eyes and you weren't saying anything.” ‘Oh My God! Did I imagine that kiss? But it felt so real, I even got goosebumps.’ “Oh, okay. Thank you.” I finally said when I noticed Mason was still looking at me. “What were you saying anyways?” I asked, acting nonchalant. I wanted to know why he touched me in the first place, my blood boiling in my veins all of a sudden. “I wanted to apologize about this morning.” He said, and I raised my brows. “I won't wander around shirtless again, I don't want you to be
I'm still jotting down the notes on my book when the lecturer finishes the first class of the day. I don't want to miss anything important. “I expect you to send the case study report by the end of next week. You can work in a group of two or three.” The lecturer said before walking out of the classroom. Now that I think about it, I don't have a partner to do the assignment with. I'm new here - an exchange student - while other classmates have already formed into groups. “Have you got a partner for the case study?” A voice asked behind me, and I turned towards it to find a girl sitting behind me. She has medium-length black hair, brown eyes, and pale Ivory skin. A smile spreads across her lips. “Would you like to join our team?” She asked. “It will be three of us.” Among my classmates, she was the first to reach out to me, and I appreciated her kindness. “I'm Martha by the way.” She extended her hand to shake hands with me, and I accepted it with a smile. “I'm Happy.” I told he
He wrenched his mouth away all of a sudden, his breath staggered. He dropped my shoulders, and put space between us. “This… We… I…” He ran a hand through his hair, hair that was in my hands seconds ago, his fingers tangling in it. “We can't do this.” He finally settled on, breaking my heart. Even though I know this was inevitable. My skin flushed a darker shade of red. I wanted to tell him that it was my first and best kiss I had ever had. I wanted to tell him that I would kiss him again and again till we both forgot our names. Instead, I cleared my throat. “You're right. It's my fault. I shouldn't have kissed you.” Something in me twisted as I said that, and I hope he'll see it in my eyes that it's a lie. “No. Actually, I'm the one that kissed you. And besides, I'm the older one, so I'm sorry. I got caught up in the moment, just…” He sighed and ran his hands through his hair again, my eyes following the movement. “Just forget it. Okay?” I nodded then shifted my attention back to
Mason's POV “I'll see you soon.” I hear my voice. Everything around is dark. “Okay darling. I'll meet you at the altar.” I still remember the beautiful smile that formed on her lips as she spoke to me. Silence fills the air, but then the darkness starts to change. Light took over my vision as everything around me turned white. Distinctly, I hear people chattering around me, excitement in the air. They're sounding happy like they're about to celebrate something joyful. But then, their voice fades again, and only silence is left. I look down and find myself wearing a wedding suit and a pair of black leather oxfords. A wedding suit? Then I remembered that today is the day. Standing here at the altar, feeling nothing but joy and excitement. Everything feels so serene. My heart has never been this contented that I can't even explain what I'm feeling. I can proudly say that I'm the happiest man on earth today, because today, I will take my vows with the woman I love at this altar. We
Ash rummaged through the freezer, letting out an exaggerated gasp when she found a tub of chocolate ice cream. “Oh, we are best friends for life. You keep premium ice cream stocked? I knew you were the one for me.”I chuckled, shaking my head as she grabbed spoons from the drawer and plopped onto the couch beside me. She handed me one and popped the lid open. “No bowls. We’re eating straight from the tub like the emotionally balanced young adults we are.”I scooped a spoonful, letting the cold sweetness melt on my tongue. “Emotionally balanced, huh?”She waved a hand. “Details.” Then, as if remembering something, she turned to me with a grin. “So, tell me, does this place come with any mysterious, forbidden rooms? Like a secret passage or a wine cellar full of rare vintage bottles?”I raised an eyebrow. “It’s not a haunted house, Ash.”“Disappointing,” she sighed dramatically before shoving a spoonful of ice cream into her mouth.I set my spoon down and leaned back, letting my head re
HAPPINESS’S POVThe car ride back felt longer than it should have. Mason’s grip on the steering wheel was firm, his jaw set, but he didn’t say anything.I didn’t either.I was still trying to sort through everything Gift had said, still trying to make sense of the polite yet pointed conversation we’d had.She hadn’t been cruel. She hadn’t raised her voice. But every of her word had carried weight. And whether she meant to or not, I felt it pressing down on me.The moment Mason pulled into the driveway and parked, I exhaled slowly. My fingers lingered on the seatbelt before I finally unbuckled it.He turned to me. “Happiness…”“I’m fine.” The words slipped out automatically, but even I wasn’t convinced.Mason studied me for a long moment before nodding once. He didn’t argue. He didn’t press. He just reached over, took my hand, and squeezed.I squeezed back before pulling away and stepping out of the car.Inside, I headed straight for the kitchen. I wasn’t hungry, but I needed something
HAPPINESS’S POVThe silence in the car was heavier than it should have been. Mason’s hands gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles tight, his jaw clenched as he focused on the road ahead. He hadn’t said much since his mother’s call, but I could feel the tension radiating off him.“She won’t do anything to hurt you,” he finally said, breaking the silence.I swallowed, watching the trees blur past the window. “I know.”But that wasn’t the real concern, was it? It wasn’t about outright harm. It was about the unspoken words, the careful, measured tone that could cut just as deeply.Mason sighed, running a hand through his hair. “If you don’t want to go, you don’t have to.”I turned to him, searching his expression. “And what would that say about me?”His lips pressed into a thin line. “That you don’t have to prove anything to anyone.”Maybe he believed that. Maybe he wanted to. But we both knew this was something I couldn’t avoid forever. If I was going to be in his life, I had to face t
HAPPINESS’S POVThe morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow across the room. I stirred, blinking against the warmth of the sunlight as I became aware of the steady rise and fall of Mason’s breathing beside me.He was still asleep, his arm loosely draped over my waist, his body warm and solid against mine. I stayed still for a moment, listening to the quiet, trying to gather my thoughts.Last night, Mason hadn’t pushed me. He had simply been there, his presence steady, his touch reassuring. And somehow, that had made it harder to keep everything bottled up.I turned slightly, careful not to wake him, but as soon as I moved, his hold tightened.“Where are you going?” His voice was thick with sleep, his eyes barely open.“I thought you were asleep.”He hummed, shifting onto his back but keeping his hand on my hip. “I was. You okay?”I hesitated.I wanted to say yes. To brush it off like I did yesterday. But I couldn’t. Not this time.I swallowed, my fingers playi
MASON’S POVThe house was quiet when I got back. Too quiet.Happiness’s shoes were by the door, so I knew she was home, but I didn’t hear anything. There was no movement, no humming from the kitchen, nothing.I set my keys down, shrugging off my jacket as I walked further inside. The living room lights were dim, casting soft shadows across the walls. Then I saw her.She was curled up on the couch, knees pulled to her chest, staring at her phone screen with a look I couldn’t quite place. She didn’t notice me at first.I took a slow breath.James was right. Pushing her wouldn’t work. If I wanted her to talk, to trust me with whatever was weighing on her, I had to show her that she didn’t have to do this alone. So, I moved carefully.“Hey,” I murmured, settling down beside her.She blinked, startled, before quickly locking her phone and forcing a small smile. “Hey.”That smile didn’t reach her eyes.I didn’t say anything at first, just reached out and tucked a loose strand of hair behind
MASON'S POVThe bedroom was quiet, the only sound was the steady rhythm of Happiness’s breathing. The city lights filtered through the curtains, casting soft shadows on the walls. She was curled up beside me, her back to my chest, her body warm but stiff—like she was here, but not really.I stared at the ceiling, replaying the night over and over.Something changed. I felt it the moment we left the party, the way she looked out the window instead of at me, the way her words were carefully measured, distant. She probably thought I didn’t notice. She was wrong.I reached out, letting my fingers trail lightly over her arm. She didn’t move, didn’t lean into my touch like she normally would. That tiny reaction, or the lack of it, gnawed at me.I exhaled slowly, my jaw tightening.Did someone say something to her?Had I done something wrong?I had tried to ask, but she shut me down with dismissive answers. Lies wrapped in soft words.I wanted to push, to demand the truth from her lips. But
HAPPINESS’S POVThe air in the ballroom was thick with expensive perfume, and laughter when I got back inside. The clinking of glasses as servers weaved through the crowd with trays of champagne.Mason’s hand rested against my back, firm and reassuring. Yet, despite his presence, the unease in my chest refused to fade.He leaned down slightly, his voice a low murmur against my ear. "You okay?"I nodded quickly, forcing a small smile. "Of course."His gaze lingered on me for a second longer, as if he didn’t fully believe me, but before he could push further, a deep voice called his name."Ah, Mason! Finally!"A tall man in a sleek black suit approached, exuding effortless confidence.“James,” Mason greeted, shaking his hand firmly. “Didn’t think I’d see you here.”“Couldn’t miss it. Besides, your Dad wouldn’t let me.” James chuckled before his eyes flicked to me. "And you must be Happiness."I nodded politely. "It’s nice to meet you."“Likewise,” he said, though I could tell his intere
HAPPINESS’S POVMason’s car glided smoothly down the road, the hum of the engine filling the comfortable silence between us. City lights flickered outside the window, casting a soft glow over the sleek leather interior.I adjusted my dress slightly, smoothing the fabric over my thighs. Mason had been stealing glances at me since we left, and I wasn’t imagining the way his fingers kept flexing on the wheel.“You keep looking at me like that, and we might not make it to this party,” I teased, glancing at him.Mason smirked, shifting in his seat. “It's not my fault you look like that.”I rolled my eyes, but the warmth in my chest spread. “Eyes on the road, detective.”He sighed dramatically. “You’re asking too much of me.”I laughed, reaching for his hand on the gear shift. The moment our fingers touched, he turned his palm up, lacing them together. His thumb brushed over my skin in slow, lazy circles.Mason stole another glance at me before shaking his head. “Seriously, how am I suppose
HAPPINESS'S POVThe scent of buttery popcorn filled the air as I curled up on the couch, my legs tucked beneath me. Ash sat cross-legged on the floor, scrolling through her phone, while Maria had claimed the other end of the couch, flipping through TV channels with little interest."Are we actually watching something, or is this just background noise?" Ash asked, tossing a kernel of popcorn into her mouth.Maria sighed, still flipping. "Honestly, nothing looks interesting. Why do they even make this many channels if they all suck?""Capitalism," Ash replied dryly.I chuckled. "You're just upset because you finished your series and now you don't know what to do with yourself."Ash pointed a dramatic finger at me. "Exactly. That show had me in a chokehold, and now I feel abandoned."Maria snorted. "Try reading a book."Ash gasped. "I'm offended. Do I look like someone who has the patience to sit through pages of tiny words?"I shook my head, amused. "You're ridiculous.""But you love me
