Thandi had left the city and switched off her phone to avoid the parade by S’bu and his friends. She had initially planned to stay away for few days and go back to serve her 30 days notice at JC. However, she felt a lump on her left breast when she was taking a shower and decided to have it checked. She had checked her breasts for lumps every month and screened for breast cancer every year ever since her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her heart was pounding by the time she got to the hospital. This was her worst nightmare, with her family history she was sure that it was cancer. In the hospital she was assessed by the Doctor, her blood was taken and was asked to come back the following day for her results and have her breast scanned. She went back to the hotel terrified. After extending her stay with the receptionist she went straight to her room and couldn’t help imagining the worst. She came here to clear her mind and
S’bu woke up the following day unusually energetic and cheerful. Mandy and Menzi wondered if he was loosing his mind. They went to the hospital to see Thandi after their breakfast. Mandy and Menzi came out looking more sad than yesterday. Thandi was deeply sedated with a ventilator breathing for her. A lot of on tubes were connected to her with machines beeping all the time. It was really sad seeing her like this. S’bu was the exact opposite, he was making calls updating his parents and Thandi’s family about her progress. He even suggested that Mandy and Menzi leave him and go back to work as he will keep them updated about Thandi.S’busiso what’s wrong with you? Menzi finally asked concerned.I had a chat with Nana last night, now I have a better understand of my relationship with Thandi, he said.
When Thandi was alone, she went through everything in her head. So much had happened in just a month. Few days ago she was sure that it was over between her and S’bu and was making plans to move on with her life. A lot of girls hated her and she always believed that it was because he was hooking up with them. She had long made peace with the fact that no matter how much she loved him, there was no way she was ever going to be tied to an unfaithful man for the rest of her life. She was shocked to learn that they have been married for almost three years and he had been faithful to her since. On a normal day, she would have been angry with him for keeping the truth from her, but she almost died and was grateful to be alive. When he walked in to see her today, she realised how much she had missed him, how stupid their fight was and how much she longed for his touch. The next few days she started feeling like herself again and Doctor
The following day Thandi was woken up by S’bu who brought her breakfast in bed.You didn’t have to bring it, I would have come to the kitchen, Thandi said embarrassed. She’s been sleeping a lot lately, it was already 10 o’clock and she still felt so tired. The Doctors said you need a lot of rest and I’m going to make sure that you do, he said. They did? she asked. She was so shocked by the news that she was pregnant that she missed everything the Doctors said after that.Yes, among other things, he said. S’bu had noticed how shocked Thandi was and made sure he asked everything he needed to know about how to take care of her. When he heard that Thandi was expecting, his reaction was the exact opposite of Thandi’s. He had been tracking Thandi’s menstrual cycle and pati
Thandi was feeling less emotional, gained her strength and weight everyday. Her breast became fuller and her skin was glowing. S’bu found his wife irresistible and became worried that he won’t be able to restrain himself and feared hurt his baby. He had initially thought Thandi would stop him but he soon found out that while some women wanted nothing to do with their husbands during pregnancy, some became more attracted to them and Thandi was in the later group. He decided that is was safer if they slept in different bedrooms. When they went to see Dr Dube again, their baby was now twenty weeks and growing well. S’bu couldn’t believe it when she told them that making love would not hurt the baby in any way. That was an old myth that unfortunately most people still believed. As long as Thandi was comfortable and willing they were free to love each other.
Menzi met a distraught S’bu in the emergency room. They were soon joined by Thandi’s Mother, Noli, Mandy, Lungi, Mr and Mrs J. The other Doctors thought it would be easier if he spoke to his family while they were trying to stabilise Thandi.Thandi collapsed because her blood pressure had gone up putting her and her baby’s life in danger. In cases like these, the mother’s life comes first. If the blood pressure does not come down, a decision will have to be made to terminate the pregnancy. As you all know, Thandi is only twenty weeks, if that decision is made, the baby would not survive, Menzi told his family as sincerely as he could before going back to check on Thandi’s progress.S’bu could not believe his ears, this was a deja vu. Not long ago, Thandi was fighting for her life in icu now both Thandi and his child’s lives were in
Thandi arrived at her village very tired. She was greeted by her family and neighbours who were so excited about her wedding and could not stop ululating. This was what she loved about village life, the whole village celebrated your success because they all played a part in raising you. Everyday married women came to advise her on how to be a good daughter-in-law and how to respect and take care of her husband. She thought some advices were outdated and made her more like a slave than a wife but she appreciated the intent and knew that it came from the right place. These women were like Mothers to her and they wanted her to have a good marriage.A day before the wedding was the bridal gift day. Her whole village came in numbers to give her gifts for her new home as that was their custom. Some gifts were small, others big but Thandi was very humbled by the generosity. They all knew that her husband was rich and didn’t need anythi
Thandi finally exhaled, she was happy that the wedding went well and was over. The guest had departed to their homes. They were left with close friends and relatives.I am sorry that we can not go on our honeymoon at the moment but I promise to take you soon, S’bu said kissing her neck. He has not been to JC since Thandi was discharged from the hospital because he chose to personally take care of her but now there were projects that needed his urgent attention.I understand, I also have to cash up with my work. I feel bad for having left Mandy alone all this time, Thandi said. You are pregnant and need to rest, Mandy needs to adjust without you, he said.Don’t be so old fashioned, I’m pregnant not sick and my work is not strenuous at all, Thandi objected.
Two months had passed but major television channels and newspapers were still featuring S’bu and Thandi’s wedding. Both S’bu and Thandi had gone back to work. S’bu was very busy working very early until late, sorting out all the work he neglected when he was taking care of Thandi. He was grateful for the breakfast and lunch his wife arranged to be delivered to his office or he would starve. He was so busy that he left Thandi to attend to all of Amahle’s needs. It warmed his heart to find them chatting and giggling every time he got home. They insisted on waiting for him and have supper together as a family no matter how busy his schedule was. He soon realised that these two chatty people were everything to him.Thandi was now used to Amahle’s school programs. She would drop her off in the morning
