“I see something,” Daniel says as he looks beyond the metal fencing. We all look at him, waiting for him to elaborate. “It’s an elephant.” He adds as he smirks.
“You’re lying,” Isaac says, hope lacing his words. I can tell that he’s very happy that we have found such a big animal, considering that we have just started our hunt.
“I’m not...it’s right there,” Daniel says while pointing ahead but we don’t see anything. His vision is better than ours so I guess it makes sense why we can’t see the animal.
“Search around..see whether there’s anyone,” I give the order, and Daniel does what I say. We shouldn’t be here, this is beyond risky.
“Umm...I see no one.” He responds after searching around, and I smile.
“Search again,” I inform him, and he sighs. I have to make sure a human ain’t lying in wait for us.
“Okay..okay.” He says under his breath as he does another visual search. “No one...the coast of clear.” He says when he is done.
“Okay, let’s get going then,” I announce, and my team and I climb the fence expertly, with little to no sound.
When we jump down the fence, the noise from our feet is masked by the damp soil on the ground. Daniel walks in front, leading us towards the elephant. He is also looking around for any hint of trouble.
When we finally reach the elephant, my instincts go wild and I can feel the rising urge for my large fangs to spring out, but I withhold it.
As soon as I take another step closer to the animal, the ground lifts and it feels like my team and I are being lifted up by eagles. But the thing is, it’s not an eagle, it’s a net.
Shoot! It’s a trap!
A net has trapped us and now we are dangling in a high strong oak tree. Escaping this would be easy, but what makes me nervous is the group of men that are walking toward us.
“I told you to check.” I snap at Daniel, and he replies, “I did, I swear I did.”
“Look what we got here.” I hear one of the humans say. He looks important, maybe he’s a leader. I know it’s not General Ross, he is rarely on these parts of their land. It’s the commoners that roam here.
“We can take them,” I hear Daniel whisper, and I shake my head to say no.
“We are not going to do a thing. We are in human territory, might I remind you.” I reply to him and he gulps.
“I really don’t want to get skinned.” Issac mumbles and guilt fills me up.
“No one’s getting skinned, just follow my lead,” I say bravely.
The leader of this small group of humans studies us with his eyes. “What were you guys doing so close to the border?” He asks, and I look to Jackson. He looks and talks the most like a human. We can use him as our speaker, they don’t know we are werewolves.
Jackson gets the hint and begins to speak. “Umm..we were out hunting.” He says and the humans laugh.
“I bet they were just trying to see the werewolves by looking through the fencing.” A thin-body one says to his leader.
“You know that werewolves are on the other side, right?” The leader asks loudly.
“Yes, we know,” Jackson answers smoothly. My palms are sweating and I am incredibly nervous right now.
The leader calls one of his men and says to him, “Bring them down.”
The guy attends to his leader’s request and in a few seconds, we are lowered down. When we finally hit the ground, the net opens and sets us free, but we stand still, for weapons are being pointed at us.
“I want you to speak.” The leader says as he points toward me. His eyes are daring.
“What do you want to know?” I don’t hesitate to speak, causing the leader to smile.
“What were you guys actually doing here?” He asks me, and I smile also. Trying to act as calmly as possible.
“Truthfully, we came here to see whether we could see any werewolves through the metal fencing. So many people talked about them and we wanted to see them for ourselves.” I lie smoothly.
“I told you so.” One of the humans says.
“Shut up, Tommy.” His leader hushes him.
“These are dangerous parts, boys. This is not a zoo or a tourist site.” The leader walks close to me as he speaks loudly and authoritatively. I can smell his dried sweat and hear his shallow breathing. “I don’t want to see you, boys, around here again.” He says as he locks eyes with me.
“Get out of here.” He adds, and his guys lower their weapons.
I nod at the leader and he watches us as we walk even deeper into the human territory. We are already this far, there’s no turning back.
“We could have killed those men, and taken the elephant home,” Issac says when we are at a distance from the small group of men. “They were easy opponents.”
“No,” I say clearly as we keep walking. Now there are more people around, and I can tell that my team members are as on edge as I am.
“That would have just started another war,” I explain to Isaac, and he avoids my gaze.
He doesn’t speak anymore, none of them does. We all look around intriguingly as we walk through the forest.
I see more animals, but also many human hunters. We even see teenagers hunting deer as we walk by.
“They look so different...and so weak.” I hear Asher say. He’s talking about the humans.
Asher is the last member of my hunting team. He is very quiet, yet deadly. He fights perfectly in his human form, and he is known for his quickness when he shifts.
“I can hear their fragile hearts beating.” He adds, and I can tell that it’s more of his wolf speaking than him.
“Asher..” I say his name in order to get his attention. It works, and he looks at me.
“Your instincts are kicking in, get it together,” I warn him, and he nods.
As we get deeper, I feel liquid drop onto my face, and I realize that it’s about to rain. The daylight has run away and now it’s dark.
I look up to the sky and I can see faint white dark clouds, along with something that causes me to sigh in frustration.
“Is there a problem?” Daniel asks me and I point towards the night sky.
“Crap,” Asher cusses.
“Yeah, crap,” I say under my breath.
It’s the full moon, shining and giving off its brilliance. There has been a curse on the packs in Werewolf Territory from the beginning of time.
We get to choose when to shift whenever we please, except on nights when the full moon is in the sky. When the moon is full, we shift involuntarily and our instincts are much harder to control.
It really sucks, at least from what I have been told.
At first, I thought the curse was just a tale people told because I never personally experienced it. But then I got to know that that was only because I am an Alpha. Alpha werewolves don’t experience the cruelty of this curse.
“We can’t stay here, we have to return at once,” I say authoritatively, and my team members look at me.
“But we haven’t even caught anything yet..” Isaac complains. Fur has already started growing on his face as he speaks. He’s already shifting and he does not even know.
“Isaac.. now is not the time to be stubborn,” I say, but when Isaac tries to speak, a small animal-like growl escapes his lips.
“Let’s go,” I say as we all turn back and begin to head back towards the metal fencing. It’s a little distance from where we are, but we need to get out of here, and real fast.
They need to get out of here.
If they shift fully, they won’t be able to control their instincts properly, and they could attack a human; which would inevitably lead to war.
Gosh, this is all my fault. I shouldn’t have led them this far.
“Hey!” An old guy stops us. He is standing in our way. I can see the metal fencing from here.
“Old man, get out of our way,” I order him, and he frowns.
He then looks at my team members and a look of fear crosses his face instantly. “Werewolves,” He says under his breath. “Werewolves!” He shouts as he begins to run as far away from us as he possibly can.
My team and I begin our run towards the fence, but we are soon stopped by a small crowd.
The crowd continues to grow, for it is the first time since the truce, that a werewolf has set foot in Human Territory.
“You broke the truce!” I hear someone yell.
“We will skin you all!” Is the last thing I hear before something hard hits the back of my neck and I fall unconscious.
“Jaden, Jaden..” I hear a faint voice as someone shakes me awake. When I open my eyes, I see a blurry image of Isaac, and then my eyes finally clear. He is still in his werewolf form, which tells me that it is still night and not much time has passed since I was knocked unconscious by god knows what. “What happened?” I ask as I try to get up from the ground. The back of my head hurts so bad, and when I try to touch it with my hand, I realize that I am indeed bleeding. “Someone threw a stone at you, it was one of the humans,” Issac informs me, and I groan. Of course, one of them did. My team members have all shifted fully, but for some reason they have been able to control their urge to attack the humans, which is unbearably difficult to do. I know this must be hard for them, considering that all our senses heighten when we shift; so I bet they all can smell the blood that runs through the veins of these people. “How long was I out?” I ask no one in particular as I dust the dirt
I drop my hand from his shoulder, and he sighs as he watches me with satisfaction. “I’m sure there is an agreement we can come up with,” His daughter says, and he frowns. “Vanessa, please do not speak. Let us leave,” He replies to her, but she stands her ground. I’m starting to like this lady. “Father, let’s not pretend, you know we too are running low on food, the animals are getting less as each day passes,” She reminds him, and it’s clear that she has her father’s full attention now. “Okay then, what would you suggest?” He asks her tentatively as he eyes me. “We can take the Alpha as our prisoner and let the others go,” She tells him, and my eyes bulge out. “What? No way!” I blurt out as I glare at her. “Listen...this would not be forever. You would only be caged for a week. During this time, you would hunt for our villages and bring back enough food. After the week is over, we can release you to go back to your pack,” She explains to me, but it still doesn’t sound like the
I sigh as I reach for the door. When I touch the handle, my skin instantly burns as if I placed it in hot oil. The pain is unbearable. “Bloody hell!” I yell in agony as the pain cripples my mind. “White Skull Rocks,” Jack says, and the other guard laughs loudly. He seems to be enjoying this too much. I groan in pain as I take a look at my palm. The skin is trying to heal already, but the flesh on it was completely melted off by my encounter with the door. I have to count on my ability to heal fast to deliver me from this excruciating pain. “The entire door is made of them. I want to see you try to escape,” Jack says with a chuckle as he opens the door and pushes me inside. He then locks the door, leaving me grinding my teeth because of the physical pain I’m feeling. I cuss under my breath as my palm continues to regenerate. I can feel my fangs coming out, due to the pressure that sits in my palm. That door really did a number on me. I take deep breaths to calm myself, and it wor
“Okay,” I say lowly as I turn my horse around. “Where are you going?” She asks loudly. “Back to The Hole. My people are without a leader, I just want to do what I came here to do, and then return.” I reply to her. “Okay then! Let’s hunt!” Her voice is fierce, and it causes me to halt the movements of my horse. “You say you want to hunt, yes? Well, let’s head to Olam then.” She says, and images of my parents flash in my mind, causing my heart to ache. I gulp as I hold back tears as memories of them haunt me. I have never cried in front of anyone since my parent's death, and I am certainly not going to do that in front of this human female. “Or I can take you back to The Hole,” She says softly. “Is it a law that you vet me the first day?” I avoid her question. I am clearly finding an excuse not to go to the forest. I don’t think I am ready to see where my parents died. “Yes. Well, not law, but it’s mandatory.” She says with a shrug as she now looks at me. “Okay,” I say. “Take m
She strokes my face and for a second, I bask in the feeling, but then I grab her hand and hold it tightly.“Don’t touch me. All you speak of are lies.” I say to her and I let her hand drop as I put distance between she and I.“Stop moving and fretting...you are wounded, remember?” Her voice changes and sounds more frail now. She’s right, I am hurt. General Ross stabbed me in the belly, how could I forget? And the crazy thing is that I am not even feeling any pain.“You have healed outwardly, but your system is at risk. The poison from the blade has spread inside you.” She informs me, causing my eyes to bulge.I look at my stomach and she is right, I have healed. There’s only a large scar on my abdomen.“I feel quite fine.” I say to her as I sit back down on the floor. “If there was poison coursing through my body, I think I would know.” I add and I scoff lightly.“You don’t feel the effects because your system is fighting it off. You’re lucky, General Ros
Wow, that was not what I was expecting.“You had an affair with the General’s wife?” I ask her incredulously.“Are you hard of hearing?” She rolls her eyes as she says this. This is clearly a topic that she does not enjoy speaking on.“I’m sorry for making you tell me.” I say softly and her face relaxes.“Oh, you didn’t make me, Jaden. No one makes me do anything.” She says and she goes back to walking around the room and touching the walls. If my mother was human, then how couldn’t I or the other werewolves sense her? It’s very easy to hear the feeble hearts of humans beating. If a werewolf listens carefully enough, he might even hear the blood running through theirs veins.“Did my mother..uh..use magic to cloak her identity?” I ask her, figuring out that that must have been the only way she could have been hiding in plain sight.“Yes, Jaden. Our family bears one of the most powerful sorceress line in the world; but sadly, I’m the only one left.” She explai
The bravery she has is unmatched. I thought I was brave, but the more time I spend in here with her, I see glimpses of my mother. My mother was a brave woman.I was trying to ignore it at first, but Selena looks exactly like her. The same eye structure, and the same smile.“You miss her, don’t you?” She asks me as I try to escape my thoughts.“Yeah, I do too.” She says without waiting for me to reply to her question.“Why did you say that the forbidden alliance between my mother and father claimed their lives? That’s not what happened.” My voice is firm and Selena studies me as I speak.“They died in a forest here in human territory. That’s where General Ross killed them.” I explain to her.I expect her to know this, since she is a sorceress and all.“The forest Olam.” She says with a sigh.“All you have said is right, I saw it all happen in dream days before.” She adds.“How do you think the General was able to kill two great people on the same day? Yo
“Wait-what?” I ask her, confusion covering the features on my face.“I don’t have much long. The General and his guards would be here soon.” Her words are carried by the noise from above. Why do they keep so many prisoners? And the crazy thing is that most of their prisoners are their own kind. “What do you mean? I thought nothing could harm you. You told me that.” I say to her.I feel a strange obligation to protect her. Protecting her would be like protecting my mother.“Oh, Jaden. No matter how long the sun sits in the sky, it would still have to fall to sleep so the moon can rise.” She speaks in a parable that only takes a second for me to understand. What she means is that no matter how long she stays alive because of her powers, she would eventually have to fall prey to the cold hands of death soon.“I sense greatly that it is my time.” She adds. She looks very weary. She maintains the appearance of a young lady, but her presence seems old and frail.
My palms and forehead are sweating and I can not help but feel nervous. How the hell does Erik know about Vanessa, and that I slept with her? If anyone else finds out about this, it would be hell for me.“You know what, I change my mind. There is no use in telling you,” Erik says as he chuckles. He has a smirk on his face that is causing the anger in me to arise.I close the distance between us as I rush toward him with great speed and I hold him in the air by his clothes. He does not try to fight back, which agitates me further because he’s laughing. Does he think that this is a joke? I could literally kill him right now!“Whoa there, Jaden. I think you have forgotten who’s in charge,” He tells me as a cocky smile plays on his lips, but I can see a hint of fear and nervousness in his eyes.“Now put me back on the damn floor before I have guards barging in here in seconds,” He threatens me and I loosen my grip on his collar while I bring him back to the floor. As soon as his feet tou
In about fifteen minutes, the chariot reaches its destination. A huge castle comes into view as I exit. I can’t remember the last time that I came here, it has been too long, but my memory is flawless and I can still remember the steak I had the last time I was here to have dinner with Erik and Ramsey. I can still remember how intense Erik’s hate for me was.“Right this way,” The royal guard leads me to the entrance of the castle. I can feel so many eyes on me, a lot of people are here and are also trying to get into the castle. A huge fence keeps everyone out, including the royal guard and me.“The feast has drawn people from all over the town, but not everyone is allowed to enter. Only first-class people and second class are allowed in, and at that, it is still difficult to get in,” The guard explains to me as we weave through the crowd.“Why do I have to be here?” I ask under my breath as I follow his lead.As soon as we are at the entrance, the guard gives a signal to the two buff
“You are quite bold,” I tell Jennifer and she looks at me with a slightly confused look. “What do you mean?” She asks me and I chuckle.“The fact that you are professing your love to someone right in front of a man you just met today,” I tell her, and she scoffs lightly.“Correction, I did not just meet you today. I have known you all my life and have even looked up to you. You are the leader of the whole werewolf territory, how could I not know you?” She replies to me and the smile on my face weakens.I love how she talks about me as if I am a hero of some sort, but she has no idea how much shame I feel right now. The last time an Alpha faced The Council was decades ago, the fact that I became the next Alpha to face them makes me feel heinous.“Listen, I don’t trust Jack, but that does not mean that you don’t have to too. He is a real nice guy and he saved my life. The truth is that the only reason that I don’t trust him is that he is a Deceptive Alpha, but I think it’s time for tha
Who I see in this lady’s house startles me, it’s Jack, the deceptive alpha. He is seated on the couch and he looks shocked to see me also. I turned to the lady who owns the beautiful humble home and I decide to interrogate her.She has no idea who this man is, he is a literal trickster, and he cares for no one else but himself. I don’t want him using her.“What is he doing here?” I ask her and she chuckles. “I asked you a question, I did not say a little jokey joke,” I say to her and she looks taken aback but yet answers my question.“He is a guest here, my guest,” She tells me, and then she walks away from me. By the look on her face, I can tell she is pissed at me. I may have been a bit harsh when I spoke, but nevertheless, I still got my answer. She walks to the couch and slumps her body down on it. She folds her arms and stares at both of us.“I am her guest,” Jack says as he stands from the couch and walks over to me. He has had his clothes changed because it is not the same one
My instincts peak and I smile as I watch him attack. His paw flies dangerously close to my face and I dodge expertly.I feel a great urge to morph and beat the crap out of these guys, but if I dare morph, I might risk getting stoned to death.I know the council, and they don’t play favorites. They stand by their word.“Stop this!” I say as each of them attacks. I dodge all their attempts to hit me smoothly until I trip on a rock behind me and I fall. The head of their pack jumps over me as he sees the opportunity. He lands a hit on my jaw with his paw and I groan in pain.As he is about to hit me again, I grab his paw and I send him flying in the opposite direction with a single blow.I stand to my feet and I let out a growl that causes the other wolves to halt their movements. They now seem scared to try anything.Although I am not allowed to morph, I can certainly take these guys in a fight. I could kill everyone
“Good. So now that you have pled guilty, would you like to tell the elders, your fellow leaders and the people what happened?” Elder Ian speaks as he looks at me.“Of course.” I say and I turn to the people.I don’t need an object to magnify my voice, I am the most glorious alpha alive, my voice can reach distances if I only focus.“I am not going to lie to you all. I am guilty of the charges brought up against me. I did break the truce, and almost caused a war between us and the humans.” I begin to explain.“That is information you all know. But what you all don’t know is that our food reserves are almost empty.” I say and everyone begins to chatter amongst themselves, including the elders. No one but my hunting team and I knew about our depleting storage of food.“And why didn’t you inform us?” Another elder stands up from his seat and speaks.“Because it was my decision. Telling everyone would have not helped in any w
I am not a fallen leader.I withdraw from the hug with Erik and he chuckles.“Good luck in there, champ.” He says with a smirk.Jack touches my shoulders and I turn to him.“Are you okay? You look like you have seen a ghost.” He says to me and I wet my dry lips.“I’m okay..I’m fine.” I reply to him and he studies me for a few seconds, not believing me, but he lets go of my shoulder nevertheless. We all walk into the Court House and I see thousands of people. I forgot how big this place is.The inside of the building is like an large arena. Stone seats are carved into the ground and all of them are taken by individuals.“Wow, this place is jaw dropping.” Jack says as he looks around.I look to where we are heading and I can see the twelve elders sitting high up watching us approach.“We welcome, lord Erik!” I hear a voice say loudly through some form of speaker that causes his voice to ring like
My head is now swirling as I consume this new information.“A leader of Werewolf Territory was placed on trial before?” I ask, still not believing. No leader has been under trial by the council. Leaders can only be advised and warned or even penalized, but never tried. At least not to my knowledge. This Is why I’m not buying what Erik and these people are saying, I can’t be tried!“Yes..Lord Cain.” Isaiah replies to me.“Do you want us to go inside the store to discuss this?” He asks me.Jack tries to speak, but I speak over his voice.“No, we’re good here. Tell me about Lord Cain.” I say to him.I have no knowledge of Lord Cain, except that he led our territory about two hundred years ago.We were taught this as kids.“Lord Cain was tried by the council after it was discovered that he accidentally killed his wife.” Isaiah explains it as if he was actually there. And he might
The council seeking to meet me before the sun goes down is definitely not a good sign. The council is an assembly of high rank officials within the Werewolf Territory.I am also apart of this council, and so are Erik and Ramsey. Then there are twelve elders that makes the council complete. The twelve elders are werewolves who has been alive for at least a hundred years. A knock on the door of the room captures my attention. I look towards the door and I see Jake standing. Why hasn’t he gone back?“What are you still doing here?” I ask him softly and he begins to walk towards me.“I had a talk with Ramsey..he’s a pretty nice guy.” He begins.“He urged me to stay, and although that is a tempting preposition, I can’t just leave the Human Territory. It’s a part of me, it’s my home.” He explains.“That’s not your home, Jake.” I say and he inhales deeply and exhales shakily.“You don’t understand, J
