GRAY’S POV
“A pleasant evening, everyone. It is an honor to stand in front of you today. To be honest, I didn’t expect this company to be this grand. I am a little pressured…”
The guests who were unfamiliar with Jane laughed and cheered for her, while the others who knew my deceased wife, remained clueless about what was happening. My muscles were tensed, and my eyes could not leave the woman’s presence.
“What kind of nonsense is this?! Why is that woman on the stage? Is this a joke? Mom! Do something about this!”
Aerah was the first to react. Her sudden burst out took the attention of the guests that were previously drawn by Jane. Aerah’s reaction broke the ice that stiffened me in my seat.
Damn, Aerah. This was not the time to be a fucking brat!
“Aerah, sit down!” I ordered, my voice almost a whisper. She looked at me incredulously, her mouth slightly parted. She stood up, scoffing, making her the center of attention. Even Jane, who looked at her like she was a scandalous stranger watched her make a scene. I clenched my fist.
“You whore! What the fuck are you doing—”
“Aerah! Stop it this instant!” I got to my feet and reached for my sister’s arm, but she cast it away. She rolled her eyes on me and started walking towards the stage, her eyes brimming with hatred. Damn, woman!
My sister buried a strong disgust towards my wife. Just like my mother, she believed that Jane was already dead. She was gone in their hearts and minds. Seeing Jane here was like seeing a dead person rise from the dead.
SERENA’S POV
“So, you’re freaking alive, huh? What kind of witchcraft did you use to be able to come back here?” the woman who stood up asked me, her tone overflowing with disdain. Hearing Aerah’s voice for the years that I had not seen her woke something inside me. Staring at her for a couple of seconds, I noticed a hickey on her neck.
She had not changed. She was still the biggest whore I knew. Where can she get the audacity to call me a whore when she, herself, was the one who liked to bed men daily?
“E-Excuse me?” I responded, faking my surprise. I had expected them to react this way. Given how classless Geraldine raised her only daughter, I was anticipating something worse than this. The only thing that I did not expect was for her to be in this gathering. Kelly once told me that Aerah was rarely at home. It was either she was gone clubbing or she was staying at a random man’s apartment.
“Excuse me your ass! Who are you fooling, Serena Ambers slash Jane Williams? What do you think of the people here? Dumb? Stupid? Your striking resemblance with my brother’s filthy ex-wife is very evident!”
Aerah’s voice was trembling. She was Geraldine’s daughter, so it would be impossible if she was feeling anxious or scared of me. She was trembling out of anger. She never expected me here, especially when she lived her life knowing she successfully got rid of Jane Williams.
But I didn’t come here as Jane. Jane was dead. I am Serena now, and I would not let this whore ruin my comeback. The guests were now alarmed. Bewilderment surrounded the hall, plausibly because of Aerah’s scandalous burst out. Psh, Airhead. Can’t she realize that their guests were high profiles? They would not like this—dumb ass.
“I did not expect this kind of welcome from a billion-dollar company. Mr. Moore? Is this how you represent your business? Is this how you treat your guests? I was promised a good environment when my secretary discussed business matters with your people, Gray Moore…” I stated, my eyes now focused on my ex-husband, who was currently standing beside his dying mother.
Even from afar, I could see him clench his jaw. Hazel’s shadow was beside him, almost unnoticeable. He started advancing towards his sister, shame could be seen in every step.
Just like that, Gray Moore. Just like that. Have your walk of shame. You have all the reasons to be ashamed.
“Aerah! Stop this right now. There are guests here…” he spoke, his tone ice-cold. The corner of my lips raised. Gray was so calm, but his uncertainty didn’t escape my gaze.
Every glance that he was taking from me caused an unseen shock between us. Waves of memories flashed in my mind, most of them were the flashbacks of my first two years being married to him. The ones that were still unclear to me.
He had changed so much. He used to look at me with nothing but indifference. I would be even lucky if he looked in my direction before. Even his build had changed, too. I used to admire his entire being years ago. I could not deny that Gray Moore was really an attractive man, but remembering how much I suffered from his family, and how he was one of the suspects who tried to kill me that night, his attractiveness instantly disappeared. Anger fueled my chest as I shot him with a piercing gaze.
“What now, brother? Don’t tell me you believe that this woman is not Jane Williams? Gosh, since when did you become so stupid—”
“Enough, Aerah Celine! Can’t you see that guests are watching you? You are ruining this party! You are ruining this company’s anniversary!” Gray exclaimed, his eyebrows meeting each other. He reached for Aerah’s arm firmly, making the woman unable to cast it away. Aerah rolled her eyes with exaggeration, glancing up with pride.
I actually felt so impressed with her confidence. Even if her family’s company was on the verge of facing public judgment, she never cared. Even if there were hundreds of cameras filming how she lacked the etiquette, she never gave a damn. She was just there, shaming her mighty family like an uneducated person.
Well, what do I expect? She came from Geraldine. She came from a woman with money but without class.
“I could not believe that I would receive such a welcome after I put millions of fortune in this company. With your employees being so unalarmed with that woman’s actions, I guess they are already used to her. Is this the company I would work for, Mr. Gray Moore?” I remarked, spitting nothing but pure disappointment. Gray Moore remained calm. He was still holding Aerah’s arm when he cleared his throat.
“I apologize for the disrespect, Ms. Ambers. I would take full accountability for this matter—”
“I am so disappointed. I don’t understand why is that woman so mad at me when this is the first time I met her. Please remember that this first impression would last forever, Mr. Moore. Do not expect me to be kind after this…”
“Yes, Ms. Ambers. I suggest that you sit down for a while and calm things down. I sincerely apologize. I assure you that this will not happen again…”
Staring at Gray’s every move made me realize how much he was enduring this situation. The uncertainty in his eyes never left. It seemed like he did not have any idea if he would believe his sister or me.
He looked clueless and stupid.
“You better be…” I turned my back against him and walked down the stage. Several murmurs could be heard as I went to the table prepared for me. I was not alone there, as my secretary sat there, too.
“Ms. Kelly is on her way here, Ma’am. Do you want me to tell her what happened just now?” Miranda inquired, readying to dial Kelly’s number.
“Don’t. Let her be shocked and find it out herself. I wanna see how Aerah would run to her and rant about my comeback. For sure, Aerah would talk shit about me in front of her so-called best friend. Funny, right?”
Kelly intentionally befriended Aerah years ago as Kelsey Robins. Well, that was to find things about what was happening to me in Gray Moore’s house. I was so impressed when Kelly told me about that. I didn’t know how dumb Aerah was for believing everything that Kelly did. I could imagine how broken she would be once she found out that her only best friend was my sister.
“Everyone’s looking at you, Ma’am. Do you want me to do something about this? The media is also present, recording everything that’s happening here. Do I have to pay them to not leak every footage they have? What happened here is damaging to your name…”
“You don’t have to, Miranda. I already expected this. Remember what Kaihly warned me? This is what she was talking about. The woman did extensive research and found that Geraldine and Aerah tell stories about my death—which never happened…” I responded, a smirk forming on my lips. Miranda’s lips parted, her eyes filled with confusion.
“How come? Nobody said you were dead. We didn’t fake a body as well. How come they tell people that you’re gone when you just completely disappeared?”
I turned to her and shrugged.
“When people hate you, they will do everything to ruin you or make you disappear. They probably told the people that because that’s what they wanted to happen. They knew I was in an accident but never found my body, but they still assumed I was gone—because that was what they wanted…”
Miranda’s innocence about my situation made me want to fire her. Not because I didn’t like her services, but for fear that she might be involved in this. Miranda was a loyal secretary to me, and her loyalty made her stay even if she knew that I was plotting something that would not make her safe.
“Ms. Ambers?”
Miranda and I were interrupted by a low, raspy voice. Seeing Geraldine Moore, Gray’s mother who loathed me since I got married to Gray, I readied myself to pull another fake act. My nerves were heightened as our eyes met. I gave my all to not let my artificial facade down while she watched me suspiciously.
“Mrs. Moore,” I greeted her, standing up. I faked a smile and extended my hand to her. She glanced at it, seemingly hesitant to accept it.
I am the same, Geraldine Moore. If it weren’t for my plan, I wouldn’t even be breathing the same air as you.
Geraldine smiled subtly and reached for my hand, shaking it. Disgust rushed through my veins as our skin touched. I wanted to pull away the moment our hands went in contact. My organs seemed to be starting a war inside my stomach, making me feel like throwing up. Touching her felt like handshaking with my baby’s murderer.
Geraldine withdrew her hand seconds later, her gaze never leaving mine.
“You look exactly like her…” she whispered, her eyes marveling from my head to toe. I acted confused, my eyes squinting a little.
“Excuse me? Is this another show again? Are you here to humiliate me?”
“Oh, don’t worry. I won’t do that, Ms. Ambers. My son is watching me…” she replied, her pearl-white teeth showing.
I wondered how could she look at the woman who she abused years ago. They might not confirm that I was Jane Moore, but still, standing in front of a person who looked exactly like her would surely send shivers down her spine. I wondered how she achieved this kind of evilness to feel exactly nothing facing me.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Mrs. Moore. I look exactly like who? This is the first time we have met, Ma’am. I have no idea what is happening,” I said, bewilderment surrounding me. I could see how much Geraldine restrained herself not to lift a finger to hit me. I didn’t want to receive a slap, but I was dying that she would do it for the sake of shaming herself. I wanted the media to know how classless this person was.
“Oh, are you sure you don’t know? I am not gonna make a scene here, Ms. Ambers, but I want you to know that I won’t be deceived by you. You can’t fool me, Jane Williams. If you’re here to ask for an apology about supporting my son for divorcing you—”
“Whatever you did to Jane Williams or whoever that woman was, I don’t care. I am completely out of that. Are you threatening me, Mrs. Moore? You sound like an expert talking to me so calmly while spitting the most nonsense words. The guests won’t even think what’s going on between us…”
Geraldine Moore was a great pretender. She brainwashed his son to divorce me, so acting so nice to me right now would be a piece of cake.
“That’s enough, Mom…”
SERENA’S POV“Oh, your son’s here, Madame Geraldine. Since you’re acting like nothing’s happening here, do you want me to initiate and tell him about the accusations you’re throwing at me?” I offered, blatantly displaying a fake smile. The old woman’s eyes squinted, her lips turning flat. I turned my gaze on Gray, and just like how he looked at me the moment I showed myself on stage, his eyes were filled with confusion and mystery.“You’re so quiet… I don’t like it.”His silence reminded me of the days when I badly wanted to spend time with him, but I would always get nothing. Hearing that, Gray cleared his throat, swallowing.“I deeply apologize for all the troubles happening right now, Ms. Ambers—”“Don’t be. I am already disappointed. Given how wonderful this party looked, I never expected such treatment like this. If you want to redeem yourself, I suggest to stop trying tonight. Everything’s still fresh—”“Oh, shut up! Don’t even try to act so high and mighty, Jane Williams. We al
SERENA’S POV“Where’s Kelly now? Did she send us an update?” I tried to remain calm as I sat on the couch. I was still wearing the dress that I wore at the party, and even though it had already been an hour since I came home, I felt like I did not have the time to change. I was too preoccupied with what Kelly said. What does she mean that we have a problem? Did Aerah know about her already? It had only been a night, dammit!“Calm down, Jane. You know Kelly’s a good liar, right? She had been doing this for years. And besides, that girl Aerah trusted her so much that she won’t bother suspecting her…” Kaihly, Kelly’s twin stated, watching me silently panicked. She sat comfortably in front of me, her arm crossing against her chest. She knew what was happening. She even saw how Aerah made a scene at that party. I did not have an idea that my sister hacked the surveillance camera in that hotel to watch me get embarrassed by that filthy family.“She said that we have a problem, Kaihly. Wha
SERENA’S POV “Aerah Celine…” Gray called in a warning tone. The corner of my lips turned up, satisfied when I saw Aerah’s glare at her younger brother. Gray then cleared his throat as he fixed his position on his seat.“Well, all of you already know what this meeting is all about. Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of Moore Estates, and unfortunately, a few misunderstandings happened that ruined the party…” Gray started. Almost everybody eyed me, then shifted their gazes on Aerah, who never looked away from me since I entered this room.“A complaint was sent to my office against the new member of the board, which is Ms. Serena Ambers…”I knew it. This was what Kelly told me last night. I was sure, Aerah and Geraldine were the ones who plotted this. And if I was judging right, Gray agreed with what they were planning, too.“With all due respect, Mr. Moore. I don’t understand. A complaint was raised against Ms. Ambers? Wasn’t she the one who was embarrassed by your sister last nigh
GRAY’S POV“What?” I muttered under my breath. Aerah laughed sarcastically. “You think I’m a fool, my younger brother? Why do you keep defending that woman, by the way? She resembles your wife almost perfectly. Is that the reason why?” With my forehead knotted, my brow almost met as I shot my sister dagger looks. “You are out of your mind, Aerah. Will you please just let me run this company properly? Even if Ms. Ambers is Jane or not, we cannot deny that she really put fortune and even helped the company’s growth! We can’t just kick her out!” “Ah, so you’ll let that bitch wander around our place as if she didn’t have a past with us? With you? My dear brother, are you really becoming a fool?” Oh, damn. Can she not understand me? She seemed to forget how the board reacted when Ms. Ambers said she would pull out her shares. With her influence, our investors might pull out their shares, too. “We can investigate about Ms. Ambers to know who she really is. I-I am sure your family is p
KELLY'S POV All of us turned our eyes towards Gray's secretary. I was confident that we had hidden Jane's identity excellently, but hearing Hazel say that she found something about my sister made my heart drum bizarrely. “You found out something? Didn't we just talk about investigating her this afternoon? How can you find something about her that fast?”Aerah questioned, raising her brow. What the hell does she know about my sister? “Didn't I tell you to get out of our family matters, Ms. Brown? In which part of what I told you was unclear?”Gray eyed his secretary with pure judgment. I knew where was this going. I had heard that Geraldine Moore favored this girl so much that even if Gray was the one who was talking, that old hag would defend this woman. “Let her, son. At least we already have information about that strange woman...”As I was expected. Geraldine would favor this girl with her life.“I already started knowing who she was even before I suggested it. I have known Ms.
SERENA’S POV“She will fucking stay here?! Oh, come on, Gray! How come you’d let that whore work here?! I cannot believe you!”My arms were crossed against my chest as I listened to the noise inside my ex-husband’s office. Miranda was beside me as we waited for Aerah to come out so we could come inside.“She hates you so bad, Ms. Ambers…” Miranda commented, her mouth slightly parted. I let out a chuckle and shook my head. Gray called for a meeting this morning to announce my stay in the Moore Estates. Since Mr. Baker, the former vice president of the company was already dead and his shares were now successfully transferred to me, the board had decided for me to take over his position, too.Aerah wasn’t part of the board members, but news flocked really fast and when she heard about my position in the company, her mind went haywire and now she was in Gray’s office, disturbing his dearest brother.“Can’t you understand that that woman’s dangerous?! Who knows if she’s planning something
SERENA’S POV“Ms. Moore… What brought you here?” I asked, turning to see her. Aerah’s arms were crossed against her chest as she rolled her eyes at me.“You dare to ask me that? Of course, my family owns this company! What kind of question is that Ms. Ambers?” she replied, emphasizing my surname to mock. I knew where this was going. Aerah used to bully me before, but because I respected Gray and his family a lot, I never talked back nor did something that would make them hate me more. For sure, she would do the same thing that she did years ago. She was just unfortunate because I came back here prepared for that.“You work here now? As what? As…”My eyes marveled all over her torso, only stopping when my eyes marked the ID she wore. A grin erupted from my list.“An intern? I thought you owned this company. How come you belonged to the employees who had the lowest pay? Does the company even pay you?” I could remember Aerah not being interested in business before, that was why Gray wa
GRAY’S POVI spent most of my time in the office just like I always did since then. It was already dark when I left the Moore Estates’ building and headed to the address Marco sent me. “It’s been a long time, dude! How the fuck can you spend your days caging yourself in your office?” Marco greeted me, handing me a glass of alcohol. The bastard did not even offer me a seat first. Three of us were inside the private room of Marco’s newly opened club. Marco and Kole, my friends, came from a well-known family, too. Both of them had established their name in the business industry, so it was rare for us to meet during weekdays due to hectic schedules. Marco had set this meeting randomly for an unknown reason. “You really got connections, huh? I saw a lot of people on my way here. I remember most of their faces but not their names,” Kole commented, the corner of his lips turning up as he looked at our friend, Marco. I sat on the couch and put the alcohol glass on the table. I was not in
AERAH’S POV“Dang it,” I cussed at myself as I retouched the powder I had on my face. I finally got to change and look pretty again, but there was something that was still bothering me now. “Goodness, Mom,” I groaned as I clicked the red button to turn off the call for the nth time now. She had been calling me since I received that nonsense text. Gosh, isn’t she used to me yet? I thought she would not be shocked anymore if she heard another gossip about me from her friends again. She seemed to forget that men would not stop salivating over her only daughter.Am I at fault for that?I knew I fooled around again days ago, but I made sure that there would not be any clips or pictures that those bastards would take of us while doing the deed. Well, that happened successfully, but it seemed like I would not be able to control their nosy mouths and they would start telling people about how good I was in bed.Stupid bastards.“Finally done,” I sang like I was singing in a theater. I did not
AERAH’S POVIt was so unusual that my brother did not go to work today. I had been trying to look for a chance to talk to him and apologize for what I did, and now that I finally got the courage to do so, his secretary would tell me that he would not work today. He even canceled all his meetings that were supposed to happen later. What the hell is wrong with him? Is he avoiding me? Did he really take my slap personally? I only did that because I was pissed off! I felt like he was disrespecting me!“Do you know when will he come back? Can you ask him why isn’t he going to work today? I need to tell him something urgent.”I had to apologize right now or I would not get a good sleep tonight again. I could not afford to be sleepless and had puffy eye bags just because of guilt. Damn it!“Mr. Moore said that he has something important to do today, too, Ms. Moore. He advised me to not call him for things that relate to work—”“But I wouldn’t talk to him just for work! Duh? We are the owner
GRAY’S POVMy mother, just like usual, could not help but rant to me again because of Serena Ambers and my sister’s attitude. To be honest, I would be more confused if she would not do that. That was what she did all the time—to rant and complain about almost the same thing. Aerah got her attitude from her.Good thing my mother was also a worrier because when she heard a loud honk from the other cars, she almost went under cardiac arrest and immediately scolded me for being too careless and comfortable on the road. She was not a fan of using phones while driving—or perhaps doing something while inside the car. She ended the call right away, thanks to the cars that honked so loudly. Our house was hours away from the company, and I had been driving for a long time now. I had no plans on staying at work for the whole day, anyway. I had my meetings canceled so I could take my time staying at home. The house that I bought for Jane was inside the village that my mother’s family owned, so
SERENA’S POV“Who the hell is that man Mom was talking about?” I asked myself as I ate the salad Kelly made for us. Just like usual, all of us were in the lounge, spending our time here however we wanted. The sun was up now, but none of us seemed to have planned to leave the house. Well, I did have a plan, but I would not be so stubborn again like how I did last time. My doctor freaking scolded me when he learned how I didn’t take his advice seriously. Also, no matter how much I wanted to go out and do what I had to do, I would not take any risks again unless I really needed to do so. Geraldine almost learned what was I hiding because of my stupidity and stubbornness. I was too careless and wasn’t thinking smart enough.“Chill, girl. You don’t have to worry about it too much. Mom’s men are all reliable when it comes to technology and physical fights. You won’t be dead if someone tries to kill you again,” Kaihly answered the question that was supposed to be heard only by me. Tch. S
GRAY’S POV“Tsk. Forget about that Serena Ambers, man. It’s so fucking obvious that you’re interested in that woman, but you’ll never be at peace with her because of your family. Why don’t you try liking other women? Your former secretary—”“Shut the fuck up, Kole. I told you I am not interested in dating for now. I won’t fucking deny nor confirm anything for now, too, because everything is just so fucking confusing.”I messed up with my hair as I looked down the floor. I was not a teenager to be fucking in denial with my feelings, but I wouldn’t name whatever I felt because damn, they were not the same person, but I was afraid if ever I was falling deeply in love with Serena just because she reminded me of Jane. I had met women like Serena Ambers before. Brave and bold, and they never get too carried away with their feelings just like her, but I was never interested. Maybe as business partners, yes, as I was assured of their professionalism, but other than that, they did not interes
GRAY’S POV “Damn, that was fucking straight to the point,” Kole stated, gasping. He lightly bumped his shoulder against mine as if telling me how bad it was, that it was rude and I should not have said that. Looking at Chelsea’s embarrassed expression, I thought he was right. I should have stayed quiet.“A-Ah, it’s okay Lawrence. You don’t have to force me to Gray. This party is for Marco. It should not be for me and Gray. And duh? We just met and he barely knew me. Stop shipping me to him, guys. It’s quite embarrassing for the both of us,” Chelsea told us, stuttering and not looking where I was. She had this huge smile on her face just a while ago when Marco’s friends were teasing her to me, but now that I told them how uninterested I was, she seemed to deny it and started acting conscious. Did that embarrassment do that to her? I apologized for being blunt, but that was what I truly felt. I wasn’t hoping for an issue. I would rather look rude from their perspective than let them
GRAY’S POV “Fucking hell,” I cursed as I parked the car outside Marco’s house. My right cheek still felt numb even if my sister had slapped the hell out of my face hours ago. The rearview mirror showed me the remembrance of it—it was red and had the tiny mark of her ring that was on her fingers when it happened. I hoped this birthday celebration was an intimate one. I could not afford to be seen by guests looking like this. Fuck, why does it have to be Marco’s birthday today? Knowing that man, he was a social butterfly who knew almost all the people in and outside Texas. I got out of the car and went inside my friend’s million-dollar house, bringing nothing but the face my sister hit. I had no time to bring him gifts when many things had happened today when it wasn’t even 10 pm yet. I was not even in the pool area yet I could already hear the sound of the music. What do I expect? Marco was a party animal. I got where they were wearing the suit that I often wore while I worked, giv
SERENA’S POV The lounge fell silent as Miranda walked toward me. I glanced at Kelly, hoping to see the expression on her face that said, “I wanna answer it.” But no. My younger sister only gave me a signal by nodding her head, seemingly telling me that I should be the one to answer it. Usually, Kelly would be the one to communicate with our mother. I always led the plan and sometimes would do what they suggested, but when it came to talking to the one who birthed us, Kelly was always our representative. She had the most amazing communication skills among us and she could convince the one and only Valeria Ambers not to go here. I took a deep breath as I received the phone from my secretary. Mom’s name flashed on the screen, making me nervous even more. I answered the call as silence enveloped inside the lounge room, turning on the speaker button so that my sisters could hear her, too.“Mommy…” I greeted, befuddled on what tone should I use. She just heard that I passed out in the de
SERENA’S POV “Kelly, stop with the arguing, please. There’s something that we need to do first before anything…” Kaihly interrupted us, her tone worried. We all looked at her simultaneously, forgetting what we were worried about in a split second. It was so rare to see Kaihly without her tablet or laptop. She would not be able to live without those gadgets. But right now, she had nothing on her hand. She was just listening to us, seemingly assessing the situation. “What is it? Are there other things that we need to be worried about besides that our mother is coming here anytime soon? Damn, Kaihly, what is it?”Kaihly took a deep breath and stood up. She then faced us all, the look of terror was hiding behind her eyes, yet it still could be seen from our point of view. With the way she was acting right now, I felt like something bad was about to happen. Kaihly was always calm and composed. She was the only person who could be so chill in the middle of chaos. “Miranda said that they
