As he spoke in such a serious tone, even Winston had a moment of doubt. He wondered if perhaps he had been overthinking. Perhaps Caleb did not care about that woman at all.

“Alright. If you’re just messing around, then stop drowning your sorrows in alcohol.”

“I’m not.”

Caleb retorted, then glanced at Penny again.

She was too far away for him to see clearly, but he could tell she was focused. It was as if the noise around her did not matter.

His chest tightened again.

“She’s nothing special, anyway.”

Winston found it amusing. He rolled his eyes and smirked.

Once he had composed himself, he turned back to Caleb.

“That's true. There are plenty more beautiful and talented women in Imperial City.”

“Mm.”

Caleb felt even more suffocated.

He set down his glass and leaned back, refusing to look at her any longer.

Penny was not disturbed by anyone and continued to draw until she was finished. Only then did she pack up her sketchboard.
