My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps. It was Harrison. As he walked in, my heart skipped a bit. The atmosphere shifted, like the calm before a storm, He walked up to me.
“Ooh Emily, you're done packing already, it’s like you were eagerly waiting for this day, just like me”, he said mockingly. Lost in my own world, I ignored his presence. “Emily, so you hate me already, just yesterday you were begging me to stay and today you're showing an attitude, uhmm….”, he continued mocking. I didn’t give him any attention and proceeded to leave, as I was just about to reach the exit. I stepped back to where Harrison was. “Before I go, I have a favor to ask you, in case you don’t mind”, I said looking straight into his face. “You can go on, as long as it’s not taking you back”, he said with his head held high, and a slight tilt backwards. “I can at least fulfill your last wish, you know i'm not as bad as you think I am”, he smiled with his bottom teeth. “Why did you suddenly become so cold towards me, I just want to know so that I don’t repeat the same mistake in my next relationship if I ever have one”. I asked, my voice tangled with emotion. “Ha..ha”, he chuckled with a hint of superiority. “Your next relationship, ha..ha, Emily you're too funny”. His mocking gaze pierced me. “You actually think someone out there can love you”. He continued, his eyes sparkling with amusement at my expense. I just stood there motionless, like a statue , unmoving and unyielding. His taunts represented the rejection I feared. “Look Emily”,he changed his tone. “Since you're already leaving I think it’s the best time to tell you . Your heart's already broken, a few more truths won’t hurt that much right”, he smirked as he stood upright with an exaggerated straightness. “I have never loved you Emily”, his expression turned grave, forewarning trouble. “You 're just too delusional, or maybe let’s say you are just too stupid”. “According to how I have always treated you, any smart person could have known I just wanted to use them, but you, Emily, you're so dumb”. His tone was laced with sarcasm. My eyes widened in disbelief, I stared, frozen in shock .His words felt like a slap to my face, the sneer in his voice made my skin crawl. His mocking tone resonated in my ears, my world was turned upside down. “If Mia wasn’t my daughter,I could have cursed you, for your daughters be treated the same way you have treated me Harrison”, I spoke through gritted teeth. My voice cracked with pain, my tone strained and pained. “And yes Emily, I wasn’t done with the truths yet, would you like to listen to one more please”, he smirked. “I wanted to divorce you years ago if it wasn’t for my mother, but since she’s gone, no one can stop me now”, he continued with his taunting. I stood frozen ,unsure of what to do.Tears rolled down my cheeks as I listened to all the torments of Harrison. I felt like my heart was about to explode. “So what did you want to use me for?, I am uneducated and have no class. Why did you ruin my life Harrison please tell me". I stammered. “Well, ha…ha.., let bygones be bygones”. He said mockingly. “I will get myself a woman who is better than you in everything, educated, smart and classy. Unlike you who doesn’t even have an identity of your own.” At this point I felt like my heart was being ripped apart. Yes I was already hurt and heartbroken but his words were just making it worse. It was like rubbing against the wounds. “You have ruined my life, shattered all my dreams, broken my heart in all ways that a heart could be broken, You have hurt me so much but I promise I will heal and build myself back”, I uttered, barely audible. “One day you will look at me and regret why you ditched me Harrison, for that I promise”, I murmured as I wiped off my tears. “And as for Mia, Just consider her dead, Mia doesn’t deserve a father like you. The thought of me having ever refused to sign divorce papers thinking I was protecting her makes me disgusted”. I hissed with anger. “And who said I wanted her”, he spoke with a grin, his words infused with amusement. “If I knew this was who you really are, I promise you wouldn’t have asked for a divorce, I would have”, i spoke looking straight to his face, my voice full of resentment. He stood there, looked at me with a smirk, clearly entertained. His mocking gaze made me feel like a fool. “Are you scaring me now", he questioned. “Yes I am, and my advice to you is you should be scared, because you don’t know what is coming to you", I replied with a firm tone and a hint of tremble. My fearless facade hid the turmoil within. Maintaining eye contact but with a flicker of doubt. My hand moved mechanically to my suitcase, My eyes drifted back at Harrison. I felt a pang in my chest, a lingering attachment I couldn’t change. My gaze fell on our wedding photo, still smiling and hopeful on the wall , I turned, my heart heavy with the weight of my choice. My thoughts replayed the arguments, the torture, the disappointments and the loneliness I always felt in this house. I was about to leave it all behind. One last glance at the man who has betrayed me, I stepped out of the familiar doorway, My heart raced with mixed emotions- fear, anxiety and a hint of liberation. The world outside seemed to yawn open like a chasm. My feet felt rooted to the spot, unsure of the next step. Fear whispered in my ears, “You are not ready”. Despite the fact that my world was shattered, the sound of cars reminded me that the world was moving forward. The unknown future loomed like a shadow, the uncertainty of tomorrow hung over my head like a cloud. I steeled myself for the difficult life ahead. I summoned every ounce of courage to face my fears and finally forced myself to keep going even when it felt impossible. After a long day, I finally arrived at my mom’s house. I stepped onto the familiar porch of my childhood home. Walking through the front door revived forgotten moments of my past. I had convinced myself I had left this chapter of my life behind, but here I was, back at the beginning. Standing in this very spot, I realized life had come full circle and I wasn't prepared. A surprise return to familiar grounds. The door swung open and my mom's pinched face greeted me, I dropped my bags and gave my mom a big hug.“What happened, why are you here?” she asked, her eyes blazed with intensity.I hesitated, unsure of how to respond.“I am talking to you”, her voice rose.“Mom please, at least not now”,my voice cracked with emotion.“Emily…. Emily”, Nora came running. She reached just in time to rescue me from the interrogation.Nora is my childhood friend who has always been on my side no matter the circumstances. I can say she understands me even more than my mom does. She was the only person
“Grandma, Grandma”, Mia went running.“Ooh, Mia”, she proceeded to hug her.“How have you been Mia, are you okay”, she asked as she rubbed her hands through Mia’s hair.“Yes grandma, i am okay”, Mia replied with her cute little voice.“That's good princess”.“Nora you can take Mia to change”, i said as i turned my gaze and looked at Nora.“Does she know”, Mother asked with a straight face.“No she doesn't”, my voice was low and serious.“So when are you telling her”, she continued.“Not now”, I responded.“Until when are you going to hide it from her, she has a right to know”, she stated.“A right to know!, So that it destroys her like it destroyed me, I won't let that happen”, my voice grew more urgent.“Mia needs to face the reality Emily”, she said.“For as long as i can, i am willing to protect Mia from this reality”. Mother locked her eyes on me as though she was in disbelief.“What did you do?”, she broke her silence with a question.“Mum please, why do you always think it's ab
******Incoming call********“Nora i think that's your phone”, Nora walked up to the table where she had placed her phone and picked it up.“Hello, yes, this is Nora speaking”, she said. She paused, like a held breath, before she exclaimed in surprise, I could hear the surprise in her voice , like she hadn’t seen it coming“ Whaat, really, OMG”, Nora responded surprisingly, “Okay, thank you so much, i will be there”. She responded with such a smile as though she had received the best news in her life.Nora turned her gaze and looked at me, her face lit up with excitement, her eyes shining brightly. Her gaze was intense, filled with eager anticipation.“Emily……!, she called out my name as she jumped up and down out of excitement.“Why are you so excited?”, I asked.“Can you believe what just happened”, she said with a bright face and wide smile.“No what's it”, I responded, a look of bewilderment crossed my face as I struggled to understand. “I had applied for a job in the city, and i
Just then, mom entered the room, interrupting our conversation.“Why are you two smiling at eachother”, she spoke, her voice tingling with a hint of curiosity.“Auntie, we have good news”, Nora said as she pulled mom closer to us.“ What's going on?”she asked with a questioning look on her face.“You won't believe what just happened”, Nora replied as she tilted her head and gazed at me.“ Ooh, really, tell me Nora”, she said with a curious expression on her face.“Me and Emily are going to relocate to the city”.“Oh…”, she replied with a detached tone.As I looked at her, my mother’s face was a still pond, reflecting no ripples of concern. My eyes probed the depths of her soul, seeking a glimmer of emotion, but she displayed no visible reaction, revealing no emotional response. It didn't surprise me that she did not exhibit any visible distress upon hearing the news that i was leaving, i didn't think she would be all torn up about hearing such news but i still hoped.Despite my ration
After a long drive we were finally in the big city of Elyria. Never in my life had I ever seen such bright lights and so many people gathered in one place. The bright and vibrant energy surrounded me,this was very different from the quiet and peaceful life I left behind. The towering skyscrapers seemed to stretch on forever, I could see the reflections glinting in the polished glasses and steel that was all along the city streets. As I stepped out of the taxi, I felt a thrill of excitement mixed with a dash of fear. The cool night air hit me as I looked up at the tall building that was in front of us. I stood there for a moment taking it all in. “This is the city that is going to be my home”, I whispered to myself. Coming to this city I only have one goal, “become successful and be the best mother to Mia” . I won't let my past define my future and that's a promise. “Emily…., we are here”, Nora interrupted my thoughts. Due to the fact that it was a long distance, we reached
“Good morning Emily”. “Good morning too Nora”. “Am leaving for work, call me in case of anything, okay”, Nora said as she proceeded to leave. Later that evening, I decided to clear my mind with a walk. As I walked down the streets,I found myself in an unfamiliar area. I wandered the streets, growing more and more frustrated. “Help, help”, suddenly I heard a voice screaming. I looked around searching for where the voice was coming from, but couldn't trace anything. “Help, help”, the scream continued, this time more intense. My heart skipped a beat as the scream pierced the air. A wave of fear washed over me as I heard the desperate cry. I quickened my pace, driven by fear. The pathway was as quiet as a still pond, with no one walking around. As the screams continued, I noticed it was a kid's voice, this triggered my mind as I thought the kid may be in danger. I didn't want to involve myself in matters that didn't concern me but my mom guilt couldn't let me. I imagined i
“Okay, thank you doctor”, voices whispered from a far, a soft hum. As I slowly opened my eyes, my gaze fell upon a stranger's face. My eyes locked onto the man and I was hit with a mix of emotions:fear, uncertainty and a hint of fascination. He was in his mid 30’s, stood around 6 feet tall, he wore a fitted white shirt, accentuating his toned physique. He seemed like the kind of person who could handle himself in any situation. My head was spinning, and I couldn't shake the feeling of confusion. I tried to recall what happened, but my thoughts were fuzzy and unclear. I tried to get up and sit, “ No mum, please don't”, he said as he laid his hands on me trying to put me back to a lying position. “Why am I here?”, I asked, voice full of curiosity. “You lost consciousness, that's why you were brought here, but don't worry, the doctors say it's nothing serious. You just need to have enough rest. he said. I didn't respond back, the room went silent for a minute. “My name is Liam G
I swept my gaze across the room, searching for a familiar face. “Riley, are you here alone?”, I asked. “ No auntie, I am with my daddy, he went to receive a phone call”, she replied. “Riley!”, A voice called out. My eyes darted backward, It was Liam Grant. Compared to our previous encounter, He was impeccably dressed in tailored suits and designer accessories, his luxurious watch gleamed on his wrist, you could simply tell he was a wealthy man. As he reached at the table that Riley was seated on, his gaze lingered clearly in search of Riley, “Daddy… !”, Riley called out. He turned and his gaze fell on us, “Ooh Miss Emily”, he said as he moved closer to us. “Nice to meet you again”, he said as he stuck out his right hand for greeting. “Nice to meet you too”, I replied. “Ooh, I see you are not alone”, he said as he turned his gaze and looked at Mia. “ Who is this beautiful princess?”, he said as he smiled, his smile was captivating revealing a hint of mischief. Mia giggled, “My
Liam stumbled backwards, his eyes darting between us as if searching for answers. I shifted my gaze at Harrison. “Are you done”, I asked softly. “Yes dear, I am done”, he said as he turned his gaze towards Liam, who stood stiff. “What are you two doing here alone, where is Nora?”, Harrison asked as he glanced around. “Who are you to ask”, Liam asked furiously. “Emily is my wife, we can talk about whatever we want”.“Emily is mine, she may be your wife now, but she was mine first, and I am going to take her back from you” “Don't be so sure”.“ Of course I am, right Emily”, Harrison said as he turned his gaze towards me. “Can you both stop this, you're not kids anymore”, I said, my tone firm and fed up. “Emily, you should ask your fake husband to shut up”, Harrison said as he pointed a finger at Liam. My eyebrows shot up in surprise, and I shot a glance at Liam. His face lit with surprise too, he gazed at me continuously, and let out a sigh of disbelief. “ Emily, don't tell me you
Liam locked his gaze on me, for a moment without saying a word. “Why are you just staring at me, I thought we had come to talk”, I murmured softly, maintaining my gaze. “Yes, there are some things I want us to talk about”, he said firmly as he moved closer to me. “I want us to talk about our marriage”. My eyebrows knitted together as I tried to understand. “Wait, what do you mean?”I asked curiously. He slowly lifted his hands and placed them on my shoulder.“ Emily, I am talking about our marriage, me and you”, his tone turned cold, more serious and scary. “L..iam”, I stammered. “Are you talking about the marriage we all know is fake?”, my voice trembled as I spoke. “To you it may be fake, but to me… !”, he paused for a minute before continuing. “To me it's not”, he spoke, his voice filled with vulnerability. “L…iam”. “Yes Emily, So please don't abandon me for Harrison, please Emily, I need you too, Emily please”, he begged. His words washed over me, leaving me breathless
“Emily, Please don't do this to me”, Liam said as he held my hand. “Why would you do that to yourself, how did that even cross your mind”.“Liam, do you remember what the doctor said, ‘Mia has reached this condition due to excessive stress, which I am sure is because of her father’, I don't want to see my daughter suffer anymore”.Liam stared at me with an unyielding gaze, his eyes boring into my soul. “Emily, you told me Harrison has never loved Mia, why do you want to take back Mia to such a man”.“Harrison seems to be a changed man”, I murmured. Liam darted his gaze back and forth, a look of disbelief etched on his face. “Just a few words from him and you are already convinced he's a changed man, Emily, didn't you learn what kind of man he is, after all the suffering he brought to you”.“What if he really is a changed man, what if I can finally fulfill my dream of a complete family!”“Are you listening to yourself right now”.“Yes I am, and I know one thing, everyone deserves a se
We quickly rushed upstairs, towards Mia's room. Before we could reach the doorway, there was a man standing besides Mia's room, with his palms folded together, pacing back and forth. As we steadily moved closer, his image became clear. It was Harrison. I quickly moved closer to him, “What do you think you are doing here?” my voice laced with anger as I spoke. “Emily, please calm down first”, Harrison spoke. “ I am here to see my daughter, Mia is my daughter too Emily, please don't deny me the right to be there for my daughter when she needs me”.I stared at him with a look of disbelief. “Your daughter, Harrison! did you suffer memory loss or something, since when did you start considering Mia as your daughter”.“Emily, why don't you let go of the past, that was some time back, what matters is that I am here”. I chuckled Sacarstically, “What do you think I am, a toy that you can come too whenever your bored and ditch whenever you want”.“Don't talk like that please, I am ready to pa
He steadily walked towards us, and stood besides me as he reached. “What are you doing here Camilla?”, his face fell as he asked, his eyes clouding over with disappointment. Camilla stood still, staring at Liam, as a faint smile played on her face. “ Would you like to guess?”she said sarcastically. “Can you please stop your drama Camilla, please, this is not the right place, nor right time”, Liam murmured. “Ooh, so when is the right time, can you please inform me so that I don't get you in a bad mood at least for once”. We both stood still, staring at Camilla, without saying a word. Fact was I was too exhausted to argue with her, at least not when Mia was fighting for her life. “What? Why are you staring at me as if you have seen a ghost?, anyway it's okay, I know you two are just surprised to see me but I can't help it. I was missing you love!. She said as she moved closer wrapping her hands around Liam's neck. Liam quickly pushed her hands away, his voice firm as he said
In no time, the doctors ran past me towards Mia's room, the door shut right in front of me. My heart raced with anxiety and fear of what would happen next. “Mia! Mia”, a blood curdling scream escaped my lips, echoing through the hospital corridor. I quickly ran towards the doorway, trying to budge in but the doctors couldn't let me in. “Emily, Please calm down”, Nora tried to console me, but it was all in vain. “Please Emily, Mia will be okay”.“No! No! Mia!”, I spoke in hushed tones. I acted like I was going crazy, like my brain was short circuiting. “Emily, what has happened”, Liam came running. As soon as my gaze fell on him, I felt overwhelmed by my grief and I burst out crying, great sobs racking my body. “Li…a…m!, Lia.. m!”, I stammered, words barely audible through my sobs. “Mi..a!”, I stuttered as I pointed towards the ICU, where Mia was being treated from. “Sshhhhhh!, I am here now Emily, I won't let anything happen to Mia, I promise”, he said as he pulled me closer, pla
“I am afraid to say this but her heart condition has become worse”, the doctor said. “Heart…!”, I exclaimed in surprise.“Wait…!doctor, I think you're mixing up results with another patient, "My daughter doesn't have any heart condition”, I stammered, my heart racing with anxiety. “Isn't your daughter's name Mia!”.“Yes Doctor, her name is Mia”.“Then that's the one I am talking about, wait..!, you didn't know about her heart condition”.My jaw dropped and my eyes widened in shock as I heard the doctor's words. My body felt weighed down by the crushing news. I stumbled back, trying to balance, a wave of weakness washed over my legs, leaving them trembling. “Doctor, can you please explain more”, Liam asked. “Mia has a very rare heart condition, Anxiety induced Cardiomyopathy, a condition where chronic anxiety and stress can lead to weakening of the heart muscle, which sometimes leads to heart failure”.“Doctor, just tell us, what is needed to treat her, don't worry about the treatm
“It's about your daddy”, I murmured softly. Mia looked at me straight in my eyes, as though trying to read through me, “Daddy”, she said surprisingly, “what's wrong with daddy?”, she asked curiously. Liam turned his gaze and looked at me, my whole body was trembling out of fear of what was to happen next, he slowly moved his hand and placed it on mine, as a way of comfort. “It's okay, let me talk to her”, Liam said. He turned his gaze and looked at Mia, who stood still, confused on what was going on. “ Umh, you know Mia, your daddy won't be coming back to live with you”, Liam said softly. “He and mummy are not together anymore, so you guys won't be able to ever live together again”, Liam spoke calmly and carefully. Even before Liam could finish what he was telling her, tears streamed down her face like she already knew. Mia turned her gaze and looked at me, like she wanted to hear the truth straight from my lips, “Mummy..”, she stammered, you could sense the fear in her voice.
After a moment of staring at me, Harrison suddenly broke his silence. “Mia, Mia, where is Mia, I want to see Mia”, he stammered. Liam got his phone and dialed. “ Hello security, Please come in, we have an intruder. Okay, thank you”. He spoke. Harrison turned his gaze and looked at Liam, he folded his hands and pleaded. “Please Sir, please let me see my daughter just once, I am begging you please”.I looked at him and smirked, then turned away to leave. I kept hearing murmurs of him begging as I proceeded to my room. Nora jogged behind me too. She slammed the door shut as soon as we reached the bedroom. “Emily…..”, Nora said as she put her hands on my shoulder. I slowly placed my hand on hers, a gentle whispered connection. “It's okay”, I murmured. “Emily..!”, Liam's voice vibrated through the room. “Can I come in”, he said. “Yes please, come in”.“ Emily, I think I should leave now”, Nora said as soon as Liam entered the room. I nodded my head in acceptance. “Emily, are you okay
