Later that night, sorrow whispered my name, the weight of my sorrow felt like an anchor, dragging me down. My world had shattered. The marriage I had fought So hard and sacrificed So much for had finally come to an end.

Harrison was sound asleep, like he had achieved his long life dream. Looked at the man who once promised to give me the world, shattering the one I had created. How could he be this selfless? What’s the reason he changed so much?. Did he even love me!. The more I thought, the more questions I had but still no answers emerged. I felt like I was drowning in the sea of uncertainty.

Being a person born in a broken family, growing up was like navigating a minefield. It really messed me up mentally, maybe that explains why I have always had attachment issues with Harrison.

My childhood was filled with numerous challenges, from low self esteem, anxiety and depression, social isolation, low academic achievement to identity confusion, and So many more. Thinking about Mia having to go through all these one day breaks my heart to pieces.

However much I want Mia to have a complete family, I also want her to always be happy. If her happiness isn’t in having a complete family, then we rather not have one, maybe that wasn’t written in our fate.

Nothing hurts more like knowing my daughter may go through whatever I went through. Having experienced how much it hurts, I can’t help but cry every time I think about Mia.

**************

“Good morning little princess, it’s already morning”, I said as I brushed my hands through Mia’s hair.

Her eyelids fluttered open, she stirred, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

“Good morning too mummy, why are you So early today?”she asked, her voice full of curiosity.

“Isn’t it obvious uhhmm…, I missed you So much last night, I barely got any sleep, that’s why i'm here to see you”. I said as I massaged her shoulders.

"So you didn’t miss me haa.., Miaaaa.., don’t break my heart”, I said as I put on a sad face.

“Ha-ha Mummy no”, She giggled, I didn’t mean that. I missed you too. She said as she hugged me once again.

“I love you baby, and I will forever love you okay, never forget that, You’re a princess and you deserve all the love in this world”. You hear me.

“Okay mummy, I love you too”. Her sweet little voice melted my soul.

“You can now get ready and leave for school before you get late”. i helped her get out of bed.

“And yes Mia", I continued, “today I will be the one picking you from school, okay”.

“Why mummy, what’s wrong with the school bus”. she asked with a curious tone.

“Nothing baby, I just want to give you company, that’s all”, I replied without lifting my gaze.

“Okay mummy, let me go freshen and leave before I get late". She said as she left for the bathroom.

As the hours slipped away,I had to pack all my belongings as well as Mia’s. It was the worst day of my life. I couldn’t help but wonder how different things could have been if I hadn’t chosen to keep Mia.

My mind ran back to the day we found out we were having a girl. I was so happy to finally get a little version of myself, unfortunately it wasn’t the same for my husband.

“I don’t want that baby, you have to abort them”. Harrison’s words still echo in my mind till date. He had promised he would never love her and I promised I would always love her. He stood on his word and I stood on mine.

My hands trembled as I packed, Each item felt heavy with emotion. I cried with every fold and every box. Sobs caught in my throat with each item. All that is left now are the memories of what was once a marriage.

As I closed the last box, a sense of finality washed over me, the house seemed to whisper goodbye. I had to call up my mother and inform her of my return home.

I pulled out my phone and dialed her number.

***Phone ringing***

“Hello”, her voice was warm and soothing.

“Hello mother” I hesitated before I replied.

“How are you Emily?”she asked.

I burst into tears barely uttering a word.

“Emily…Emily”, she called out with a voice full of concern.

“I am coming home mama”, I murmured.

“What, what’s wrong?”, she questioned.

“I…I…”, I stammered, tears overwhelmed me making speech impossible.

“Okay, I will be waiting for you”. She replied as though she had sensed something was wrong.

I nodded in agreement and hung up the call.

As I sat on my marital bed, the silence seemed to grow thicker and heavy with grief. My eyes gazed and fell upon a lone photograph on the wall, The smile of my daughter, vibrant and full of life stared back. Tears streamed down my face as I whispered, “my baby”.

I recalled the laughter, the tears and the joy we shared within this house. My heart ached , weighed down by the memories. The house once a home full of life now felt hollow.

My heart wretched, but my resolve remained firm, “I have to”, my voice barely above a whisper, “For Mia”, I raised my gaze at the photo that hung on the wall. The wedding photo ,once radiant with happiness, now hangs dulled and faded.

My mind raced with worries, My hands trembled as I recalled Mia’s words, “Let’s always be a complete happy family”. I felt a pang of guilt, I had tried my best to shield Mia from the fallout but it seemed I had failed at last.

The divorce, the arguments, the tension. It was all going to take a toll on Mia. Tears pricked my eyes as I realized I failed to mend our broken family for Mia’s sake.

My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps. It was Harrison. As he walked in, my heart skipped a bit. The atmosphere shifted, like the calm before a storm, He walked up to me. “Ooh Emily, you're done packing already, it’s like you were eagerly waiting for this day, just like me”, he said mockingly. Lost in my own world, I ignored his presence. “Emily, so you hate me already, just yesterday you were begging me to stay and today you're showing an attitude, uhmm….”, he continued mocking. I didn’t give him any attention and proceeded to leave, as I was just about to reach the exit. I stepped back to where Harrison was. “Before I go, I have a favor to ask you, in case you don’t mind”, I said looking straight into his face. “You can go on, as long as it’s not taking you back”, he said with his head held high, and a slight tilt backwards. “I can at least fulfill your last wish, you know i'm not as bad as you think I am”, he smiled with his bottom teeth. “Why did you

After a long drive we were finally in the big city of Elyria. Never in my life had I ever seen such bright lights and so many people gathered in one place. The bright and vibrant energy surrounded me,this was very different from the quiet and peaceful life I left behind. The towering skyscrapers seemed to stretch on forever, I could see the reflections glinting in the polished glasses and steel that was all along the city streets. As I stepped out of the taxi, I felt a thrill of excitement mixed with a dash of fear. The cool night air hit me as I looked up at the tall building that was in front of us. I stood there for a moment taking it all in. “This is the city that is going to be my home”, I whispered to myself. Coming to this city I only have one goal, “become successful and be the best mother to Mia” . I won't let my past define my future and that's a promise. “Emily…., we are here”, Nora interrupted my thoughts. Due to the fact that it was a long distance, we reached

Later that evening, I decided to clear my mind with a walk. As I walked down the streets,I found myself in an unfamiliar area. I wandered the streets, growing more and more frustrated. “Help, help”, suddenly I heard a voice screaming. I looked around searching for where the voice was coming from, but couldn't trace anything. “Help, help”, the scream continued, this time more intense. My heart skipped a beat as the scream pierced the air. A wave of fear washed over me as I heard the desperate cry. I quickened my pace, driven by fear. The pathway was as quiet as a still pond, with no one walking around. As the screams continued, I noticed it was a kid's voice, this triggered my mind as I thought the kid may be in danger. “Okay, thank you doctor”, voices whispered from a far, a soft hum. As I slowly opened my eyes, my gaze fell upon a stranger's face. My eyes locked onto the man and I was hit with a mix of emotions:fear, uncertainty and a hint of fascination. He was in his mid 30’s, stood around 6 feet tall, he wore a fitted white shirt, accentuating his toned physique. He seemed like the kind of person who could handle himself in any situation. My head was spinning, and I couldn't shake the feeling of confusion. I tried to recall what happened, but my thoughts were fuzzy and unclear. I tried to get up and sit, “ No mum, please don't”, he said as he laid his hands on me trying to put me back to a lying position. “Why am I here?”, I asked, voice full of curiosity. “You lost consciousness, that's why you were brought here, but don't worry, the doctors say it's nothing serious. You just need to have enough rest. he said. I didn't respond back, the room went silent for a minute. “My name is Liam G

Liam snatched the paper out of my hands, running his eyes through it. “This man is really crazy”, he uttered. How could he think of filing for Mia's custody after everything he has done”.“Harrison really has the nerves”, I exclaimed in dismay. “Even before Mia is well, what kind of father is he!”.“Don't worry Emily, how could he even think he can get Mia's custody, that will never happen, because I can never let him take Mia away from you”. Liam's voice laced with outrage as he spoke. “I am here for you Emily, you're not alone, and I will make sure you win this case, for that I promise”.I gazed at Liam in awe, wondering how he managed to maintain his kindness towards me, even after the hurt I had caused him in the past few days. She slowly shifted her gaze towards me, “What is it mummy?, am I saying anything wrong”, she proceeded. “What kind of nonsense did you feed into my daughter”, Harrison said as he slowly moved his head, gazing into my direction, “I am the one talking to you, why are you looking at her”, Mia spoke confidently. I stared at Mia with an unrelenting gaze, astonished by the courage she had at just 10 years old. Her bold and daring attitude was way more than her age. As I watched the fearlessness in her eyes, tears pricked at the corner of my eyes as I wondered how much Mia had matured, even at such a young age. “Since when did you start talking to me like that dear, look I am your father”, Harrison c

His gaze flicked over the phone, then away, as if unsure what to do. “Excuse me Emily, let me take this call”. He said as he cupped his phone over the phone, muffling the conversation as he moved away. I hesitated and then slowly sat down as if unsure. I thought back to the fact that I had chose Harrison over Liam and Nora, my best friend, and the pain I had caused her by going back to Harrison. “I am sorry Nora, Please forgive me, but I had to do this, for Mia”, I whispered to myself, as tears flowed down uncontrollably.
