Later that night, sorrow whispered my name, the weight of my sorrow felt like an anchor, dragging me down. My world had shattered. The marriage I had fought So hard and sacrificed So much for had finally come to an end.
Harrison was sound asleep, like he had achieved his long life dream. Looked at the man who once promised to give me the world, shattering the one I had created. How could he be this selfless? What’s the reason he changed so much?. Did he even love me!. The more I thought, the more questions I had but still no answers emerged. I felt like I was drowning in the sea of uncertainty. Being a person born in a broken family, growing up was like navigating a minefield. It really messed me up mentally, maybe that explains why I have always had attachment issues with Harrison. My childhood was filled with numerous challenges, from low self esteem, anxiety and depression, social isolation, low academic achievement to identity confusion, and So many more. Thinking about Mia having to go through all these one day breaks my heart to pieces. However much I want Mia to have a complete family, I also want her to always be happy. If her happiness isn’t in having a complete family, then we rather not have one, maybe that wasn’t written in our fate. Nothing hurts more like knowing my daughter may go through whatever I went through. Having experienced how much it hurts, I can’t help but cry every time I think about Mia. ************** “Good morning little princess, it’s already morning”, I said as I brushed my hands through Mia’s hair. Her eyelids fluttered open, she stirred, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. “Good morning too mummy, why are you So early today?”she asked, her voice full of curiosity. “Isn’t it obvious uhhmm…, I missed you So much last night, I barely got any sleep, that’s why i'm here to see you”. I said as I massaged her shoulders. "So you didn’t miss me haa.., Miaaaa.., don’t break my heart”, I said as I put on a sad face. “Ha-ha Mummy no”, She giggled, I didn’t mean that. I missed you too. She said as she hugged me once again. “I love you baby, and I will forever love you okay, never forget that, You’re a princess and you deserve all the love in this world”. You hear me. “Okay mummy, I love you too”. Her sweet little voice melted my soul. “You can now get ready and leave for school before you get late”. i helped her get out of bed. “And yes Mia", I continued, “today I will be the one picking you from school, okay”. “Why mummy, what’s wrong with the school bus”. she asked with a curious tone. “Nothing baby, I just want to give you company, that’s all”, I replied without lifting my gaze. “Okay mummy, let me go freshen and leave before I get late". She said as she left for the bathroom. As the hours slipped away,I had to pack all my belongings as well as Mia’s. It was the worst day of my life. I couldn’t help but wonder how different things could have been if I hadn’t chosen to keep Mia. My mind ran back to the day we found out we were having a girl. I was so happy to finally get a little version of myself, unfortunately it wasn’t the same for my husband. “I don’t want that baby, you have to abort them”. Harrison’s words still echo in my mind till date. He had promised he would never love her and I promised I would always love her. He stood on his word and I stood on mine. My hands trembled as I packed, Each item felt heavy with emotion. I cried with every fold and every box. Sobs caught in my throat with each item. All that is left now are the memories of what was once a marriage. As I closed the last box, a sense of finality washed over me, the house seemed to whisper goodbye. I had to call up my mother and inform her of my return home. I pulled out my phone and dialed her number. ***Phone ringing*** “Hello”, her voice was warm and soothing. “Hello mother” I hesitated before I replied. “How are you Emily?”she asked. I burst into tears barely uttering a word. “Emily…Emily”, she called out with a voice full of concern. “I am coming home mama”, I murmured. “What, what’s wrong?”, she questioned. “I…I…”, I stammered, tears overwhelmed me making speech impossible. “Okay, I will be waiting for you”. She replied as though she had sensed something was wrong. I nodded in agreement and hung up the call. As I sat on my marital bed, the silence seemed to grow thicker and heavy with grief. My eyes gazed and fell upon a lone photograph on the wall, The smile of my daughter, vibrant and full of life stared back. Tears streamed down my face as I whispered, “my baby”. I recalled the laughter, the tears and the joy we shared within this house. My heart ached , weighed down by the memories. The house once a home full of life now felt hollow. My heart wretched, but my resolve remained firm, “I have to”, my voice barely above a whisper, “For Mia”, I raised my gaze at the photo that hung on the wall. The wedding photo ,once radiant with happiness, now hangs dulled and faded. My mind raced with worries, My hands trembled as I recalled Mia’s words, “Let’s always be a complete happy family”. I felt a pang of guilt, I had tried my best to shield Mia from the fallout but it seemed I had failed at last. The divorce, the arguments, the tension. It was all going to take a toll on Mia. Tears pricked my eyes as I realized I failed to mend our broken family for Mia’s sake.My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps. It was Harrison. As he walked in, my heart skipped a bit. The atmosphere shifted, like the calm before a storm, He walked up to me. “Ooh Emily, you're done packing already, it’s like you were eagerly waiting for this day, just like me”, he said mockingly. Lost in my own world, I ignored his presence. “Emily, so you hate me already, just yesterday you were begging me to stay and today you're showing an attitude, uhmm….”, he continued mocking. I didn’t give him any attention and proceeded to leave, as I was just about to reach the exit. I stepped back to where Harrison was. “Before I go, I have a favor to ask you, in case you don’t mind”, I said looking straight into his face. “You can go on, as long as it’s not taking you back”, he said with his head held high, and a slight tilt backwards. “I can at least fulfill your last wish, you know i'm not as bad as you think I am”, he smiled with his bottom teeth. “Why did you
After a long day, I finally arrived at my mom’s house. I stepped onto the familiar porch of my childhood home. Walking through the front door revived forgotten moments of my past. I had convinced myself I had left this chapter of my life behind, but here I was, back at the beginning. Standing in this very spot, I realized life had come full circle and I wasn't prepared. A surprise return to familiar grounds. The door swung open and my mom's pinched face greeted me, I dropped my bags and gave my mom a big hug.“What happened, why are you here?” she asked, her eyes blazed with intensity.I hesitated, unsure of how to respond.“I am talking to you”, her voice rose.“Mom please, at least not now”,my voice cracked with emotion.“Emily…. Emily”, Nora came running. She reached just in time to rescue me from the interrogation.Nora is my childhood friend who has always been on my side no matter the circumstances. I can say she understands me even more than my mom does. She was the only person
“Grandma, Grandma”, Mia went running.“Ooh, Mia”, she proceeded to hug her.“How have you been Mia, are you okay”, she asked as she rubbed her hands through Mia’s hair.“Yes grandma, i am okay”, Mia replied with her cute little voice.“That's good princess”.“Nora you can take Mia to change”, i said as i turned my gaze and looked at Nora.“Does she know”, Mother asked with a straight face.“No she doesn't”, my voice was low and serious.“So when are you telling her”, she continued.“Not now”, I responded.“Until when are you going to hide it from her, she has a right to know”, she stated.“A right to know!, So that it destroys her like it destroyed me, I won't let that happen”, my voice grew more urgent.“Mia needs to face the reality Emily”, she said.“For as long as i can, i am willing to protect Mia from this reality”. Mother locked her eyes on me as though she was in disbelief.“What did you do?”, she broke her silence with a question.“Mum please, why do you always think it's ab
******Incoming call********“Nora i think that's your phone”, Nora walked up to the table where she had placed her phone and picked it up.“Hello, yes, this is Nora speaking”, she said. She paused, like a held breath, before she exclaimed in surprise, I could hear the surprise in her voice , like she hadn’t seen it coming“ Whaat, really, OMG”, Nora responded surprisingly, “Okay, thank you so much, i will be there”. She responded with such a smile as though she had received the best news in her life.Nora turned her gaze and looked at me, her face lit up with excitement, her eyes shining brightly. Her gaze was intense, filled with eager anticipation.“Emily……!, she called out my name as she jumped up and down out of excitement.“Why are you so excited?”, I asked.“Can you believe what just happened”, she said with a bright face and wide smile.“No what's it”, I responded, a look of bewilderment crossed my face as I struggled to understand. “I had applied for a job in the city, and i
Just then, mom entered the room, interrupting our conversation.“Why are you two smiling at eachother”, she spoke, her voice tingling with a hint of curiosity.“Auntie, we have good news”, Nora said as she pulled mom closer to us.“ What's going on?”she asked with a questioning look on her face.“You won't believe what just happened”, Nora replied as she tilted her head and gazed at me.“ Ooh, really, tell me Nora”, she said with a curious expression on her face.“Me and Emily are going to relocate to the city”.“Oh…”, she replied with a detached tone.As I looked at her, my mother’s face was a still pond, reflecting no ripples of concern. My eyes probed the depths of her soul, seeking a glimmer of emotion, but she displayed no visible reaction, revealing no emotional response. It didn't surprise me that she did not exhibit any visible distress upon hearing the news that i was leaving, i didn't think she would be all torn up about hearing such news but i still hoped.Despite my ration
After a long drive we were finally in the big city of Elyria. Never in my life had I ever seen such bright lights and so many people gathered in one place. The bright and vibrant energy surrounded me,this was very different from the quiet and peaceful life I left behind. The towering skyscrapers seemed to stretch on forever, I could see the reflections glinting in the polished glasses and steel that was all along the city streets. As I stepped out of the taxi, I felt a thrill of excitement mixed with a dash of fear. The cool night air hit me as I looked up at the tall building that was in front of us. I stood there for a moment taking it all in. “This is the city that is going to be my home”, I whispered to myself. Coming to this city I only have one goal, “become successful and be the best mother to Mia” . I won't let my past define my future and that's a promise. “Emily…., we are here”, Nora interrupted my thoughts. Due to the fact that it was a long distance, we reached
“Good morning Emily”. “Good morning too Nora”. “Am leaving for work, call me in case of anything, okay”, Nora said as she proceeded to leave. Later that evening, I decided to clear my mind with a walk. As I walked down the streets,I found myself in an unfamiliar area. I wandered the streets, growing more and more frustrated. “Help, help”, suddenly I heard a voice screaming. I looked around searching for where the voice was coming from, but couldn't trace anything. “Help, help”, the scream continued, this time more intense. My heart skipped a beat as the scream pierced the air. A wave of fear washed over me as I heard the desperate cry. I quickened my pace, driven by fear. The pathway was as quiet as a still pond, with no one walking around. As the screams continued, I noticed it was a kid's voice, this triggered my mind as I thought the kid may be in danger. I didn't want to involve myself in matters that didn't concern me but my mom guilt couldn't let me. I imagined i
“Okay, thank you doctor”, voices whispered from a far, a soft hum. As I slowly opened my eyes, my gaze fell upon a stranger's face. My eyes locked onto the man and I was hit with a mix of emotions:fear, uncertainty and a hint of fascination. He was in his mid 30’s, stood around 6 feet tall, he wore a fitted white shirt, accentuating his toned physique. He seemed like the kind of person who could handle himself in any situation. My head was spinning, and I couldn't shake the feeling of confusion. I tried to recall what happened, but my thoughts were fuzzy and unclear. I tried to get up and sit, “ No mum, please don't”, he said as he laid his hands on me trying to put me back to a lying position. “Why am I here?”, I asked, voice full of curiosity. “You lost consciousness, that's why you were brought here, but don't worry, the doctors say it's nothing serious. You just need to have enough rest. he said. I didn't respond back, the room went silent for a minute. “My name is Liam G
“Why was she here, never let her in again, understood”, Mr. Liam spat out the words in anger. I could pick up the words even when I was outside. As soon as their conversation ended, Mr. Liam walked out, he brushed past me without breaking his stride. I slowly walked back in, Miss Sofia was on phone, talking to someone. “Yes please, don't let anyone else meet her, thank you”, she said, and hang up the call. “Is anything wrong miss Sofia”, I asked politely. “ No…nothing”, she stammered as her gaze darted away, avoiding eye contact. She walked towards the table and started organizing the documents. “Help me with these, you need to arrange them according to the date and urgency”, she said as she handed some documents over to me. ************** As the evening unfolded, It was time to leave the company. Not a word was spoken by Mr. Liam during the journey. A shadow of worry crossed his face, evident in his eyes. He didn't seem himself, I sensed something was wrong, but I chose not
“Thank you so much for accepting my offer Emily, I am looking forward to doing great business with you, you're a really hard working lady, our company needs people like you”, Liam said as he maintained eye contact. “I am the one who should say thank you, I can never be able to repay the amount of kindness you have shown me, even with my life”.“You don't need to repay me in any way, it's your hard work and dedication that has enabled you to reach here today, for that you should be proud of yourself”, he said, with a smile across his face. A radiant smile illuminated my face, “but before I start working, I will need a lot of guidance to know more about how your day to day activities run, I hope you won't mind”, I spoke with a low and serious tone. “Not at all, my secretary still has a week before she resigns, she can assist you with that, you can start working today so that by the time she leaves you are familiar with everything”“Today….!”, I exclaimed in surprise. “Yes, today, do
“Good morning Miss Rosa”, I said as I greeted her warmly. “ Good morning too dear”, Miss Rosa replied with a faint aura of distress, leaving me concerned. I gazed at her intensely and asked, “what's wrong Miss Rosa? I noticed you haven't been okay since yesterday”. She glanced around nervously, ensuring we were alone before focusing on me again. Her eyes locked onto mine, hesitant to speak openly. “ Can I trust you Miss Emily “, she said as she looked at me cautiously, her voice barely above a whisper. My jaw furrowed and concern etched my face as I leaned in, “Yes please, you can trust me”, I said as my heart raced with concern. “It was Camilla”, she said as her hands fidgeted, betraying her nervousness. “Camilla, who is Camilla?”I asked anxiously. “Camilla is Riley's mother, she said she is coming back”. “Then why are you worried Miss Rosa, don't you want her to come back to the city”, her tone was a breathless eager rush as if she feared being interrupted. “ No.., tha
“Congratulations Emily, you have really worked hard, you deserve all the success in the world, I am really proud of you “, Nora said as she hugged me. “ Thank you Nora”. “Congratulations mummy”, Mia said with a sweet innocent voice as she hugged me. “Thank you sweetheart “, I said as I patted her head. “ I love you so much mummy, I am really proud of you “, Mia continued. “Auntie we are all proud of you, Congratulations”, Riley came forward too, and congratulated me as she hugged me. Mr. Liam stood on the side, with hands in his pockets, staring and smiling. As I turned my gaze to him, my soul whispered a silent “ thank you”, for this precious gift in my life. Few months after I had started taking care of Riley, Mr. Liam encouraged me to go back to school so that I would be able to get more job opportunities in future. He volunteered to cater for my tuition costs. For the sake of Mia, I accepted his offer. His support and guidance helped me overcome obstacles that I
Later that evening, Riley was back from school, So was Mia. Because there was no one at home, Mr. Liam had agreed that Mia shall always be dropped at his residence so that we can leave together once it was my time to go. My departure time was 8:00pm, once Riley was off to bed. I had to make sure she had gone to bed before I left. Mr. Liam had provided for us a car that was to drop us home every evening. “Auntie”, Riley came running and gave me a hug. Mia jogged behind her, and gave me a hug too, after Riley. “Auntie, am so happy to see you, are you going to be here everyday?”, Riley asked excitedly. “ Yes dear, I am going to be here, taking care of you”. ********************* Once Riley had gone to bed, it was time for us to leave, right before I stepped out, a curious thought struck me, “I haven't seen Riley's mother anywhere, nor did anyone mention her”, a questioning look clouded my face, but I decided to ignore it and proceeded to leave. ***********************
Early Monday morning, after Mia was picked up for School. I had to go to the address that Mr Liam had given me, I wasn't familiar with the city therefore I decided to use a cab. Before I had ordered for one, a car parked at our doorstep, claiming Mr. Liam had sent them to take me to his residence. I had no choice but to go with them, “I think he remembered that I am unfamiliar with this city”, I murmured to myself as I entered the car. ************* As the car turned onto the driveway, before me stretched a breath taking mansion, the mansion's massive stone walls rose up, exuding an aura of luxury and refinement. It's stone facade growing warmly in the sunlight. My jaw dropped as the car drew closer to the mansion, I blinked, wondering if I was dreaming. My eyes widened further as I approached the mansions entrance, the mansion's entrance was a masterclass in understated elegance, with a simple yet imposing wooden door set into a beautifully proportioned stone surround. As I
“Good evening Emily”, Nora was finally back home. “ Good evening too Nora, Welcome back”.“Thanks, so tell me, did you get for Mia a school”, Nora asked. “Nora, before I answer that, I have something to tell you, you won't believe what happened today”.“ Tell me, what happened “, Nora asked, with a voice full of curiosity. “ Last time I didn't get to tell you what happened to me. As I had gone out to town for a walk, I happened to save a girl who had been kidnapped by some goons”“Whaaaat… .! Emily, why are you telling me this now, did you get hurt in anyway”, Nora asked as she examined my body in search of any bruises. “No am fine, don't worry, and thats not all”.“So there is more”.“ Yes I met his father too, we ran into each other again today, and he treated us to lunch, Mia even made a new friend, Mia tell Auntie about your friend”.“Auntie Nora, I have my friend, she's called Riley”, Mia said excitedly. “ Riley, Oh! wow, that's such a nice name. Let me hope she was nice t
As we went on with our lunch, Liam continued to engage Mia and Riley in a conversation. The two girls were clearly entertained judging by the laughter and giggles they made. I watched how he effortlessly made the girls happy. Even if it was for a moment, I was glad to watch Mia happy. I was mesmerized at how Liam connected with my daughter even at their first introduction. I was surprised by his kindness and genuine interest in getting to know Mia, they were qualities I hadn't expected from someone I had just met. I felt good for his presence at that moment even if it was a chance encounter. I couldn't help but Wonder if everyone in the city was as kind-hearted as Liam. “Ladies, I hope you enjoyed”, Liam said as he wiped his mouth with a tissue. “ Thank you so much for the lunch Mr. Liam”. “You are welcome Miss Emily, I think we should leave now before we get late”, he said as he pushed back his chair from the table, his legs scraping against the floor as he rose from his seat.
I swept my gaze across the room, searching for a familiar face. “Riley, are you here alone?”, I asked. “ No auntie, I am with my daddy, he went to receive a phone call”, she replied. “Riley!”, A voice called out. My eyes darted backward, It was Liam Grant. Compared to our previous encounter, He was impeccably dressed in tailored suits and designer accessories, his luxurious watch gleamed on his wrist, you could simply tell he was a wealthy man. As he reached at the table that Riley was seated on, his gaze lingered clearly in search of Riley, “Daddy… !”, Riley called out. He turned and his gaze fell on us, “Ooh Miss Emily”, he said as he moved closer to us. “Nice to meet you again”, he said as he stuck out his right hand for greeting. “Nice to meet you too”, I replied. “Ooh, I see you are not alone”, he said as he turned his gaze and looked at Mia. “ Who is this beautiful princess?”, he said as he smiled, his smile was captivating revealing a hint of mischief. Mia giggled, “My
