DASHIELL
She stares at me with wide blue eyes, her lips parted. Dakota has always been a beautiful sight. The last time I'd seen her is six months ago. I had heard about her accident from her brother.According to him, she is currently suffering from amnesia. Now, I find it strange that she's right here in the lobby. Besides, there's a look in her eyes that clearly states that she recognizes me. I am curious about that."Do you recognize me?" I ask and she blinks."Have we met before?" She asks. I let out a sigh. Right, she probably just thinks I'm familiar."Did you come here alone?" I ask. She nods her head. Then, she shakes her head. She looks confused."Were you alone? You shouldn't be left alone. I'll call your brother to come pick you up" I tell her and she nods, lowering her gaze to the ground. All of a sudden, I feel a strong pull towards her and the urge to imprint on her washes over me. I freeze, my thumb hovering over the screen of my phone. I stare at Dakota who is looking at anywhere but at me.My heart begins to race in my chest as the urge grows. This feeling dictates that I have found my mate. But, it's wrong. Dakota can't be my mate. I've known her since she was a child. It doesn't make sense that I am feeling the bond now. It just isn't possible.'Mate' Orin, my dragon growls in my head and I freeze."Kota!"We both turn in the direction of Dale's voice. He's panting as he runs towards us."Are you alright?" He asks his sister as soon as gets to us."I'm okay" Dakota responds. Dale looks at me, a frown on his face."How did you get here?" He asks as he averts his gaze back to his sister."I don't know. It felt familiar. I'm sorry" she mumbles."Come on, let's go. Don't scare me like that again" Dale tells her."Thank you for finding her, Dash" he says to me, relief written all over his face."Keep an eye on your sister and take care of her. We can't have her wandering all over the place"He nods."Sure thing" he walks away with Dakota who keeps her gaze pinned to the floor, the entire time."You're going to be late for your meeting, boss" Simone, my PA comments from his position behind me. But, I am distracted. I continue to stare at Dakota until she's out of my sight. There's one way to confirm if she's my mate or not. I have to encounter her, again.... I sit up in bed with a start, my chest heaving. Letting out a sigh, I run my fingers through my hair. It's the same nightmare again. At this point, I am not surprised. Getting out of bed, I stare at my gloved fingers. My left hand is missing a finger. My nightmare has always been a replay of what happened the night my left index finger was severed. It was stolen from me and consequently used to create six seals capable of bringing great power to it's user. Yet, it is the key to chaos and massive destruction. It has been my life's goal to find every single one of them and get rid of them. However, I have had no luck in finding them.My phone vibrates from it's position on the nightstand. Picking the call, I bring the phone to my ear."Were you asleep?" West asks. He's my loyal investigator and bestfriend. Most of the time, he resides in the basement of my building, monitoring the Silver Eye, which is a device used to investigate the location of the seals."I was" I respond, pouring myself a glass of martini."Did you have another nightmare?" He sounds worried."It shouldn't be surprising to you by now" I say and he sighs."Is the dreamcatcher not working? It was supposed to be authentic. I paid thousands of dollars for it"I snort, taking a sip of martini."You have lots of money to waste. I never said anything about needing a dream catcher, West""I'm bored" he suddenly states. I close my eyes, the cool air caressing my skin."Whatever. I'm hanging up now-"He interrupts me."Wait! Don't!""Why?""Come down here, you need to see this!" He sounds excited, it spikes my curiosity."What is it?""The location of the first seal has just been confirmed."Shrugging on a night robe, I hurry downstairs to the basement and find West sitting in front of the Silver Eye, a gleaming topaz mirror enriched with dark magic. He grins when he notices my presence."Harold James, 230 years old, vampire. Received an invitation to a banquet taking place tomorrow evening. Most likely to attend this banquet. So, you have to show up right on time" he tells me, his eyes are lit with excitement. He rises to his feet and pats my shoulder."Don't lose it. We have worked hard for this" he tells me."I don't plan to."... "I should be there with you" West whines through the phone as I button up my white shirt."How many times have I asked you not to act like my babysitter?" I say, running my fingers through my hair."Gosh. You finally found the location of one of the seals after so many decades and you expect me to keep calm? Hell, no" West continues, his voice firm."Keep this away from my mother, alright? I can't have two people nagging at me at the same time" I tell him, sliding on my black trench coat."It's been confirmed that he's really going to be at the banquet tonight" West speaks, the concern in his voice making him sound like a mum. I hum in response as I stare at the mirror in my room."What are you wearing?" He asks, his voice tinged with curiosity."A white shirt and a black coat" I respond and he sighs in disapproval."That's it? That's all you're wearing? You usually wear something flashy. That's your style. What's with the boring dressing?""I don't want to get my hopes up. Besides, whoever has carried the first seal for decades and has kept it secretly won't be careless with it all of a sudden. I need to be able to mix in the crowd and not stick out like a sore thumb""I understand. You have to be careful, alright? Mistress Noir has her eyes on you. She's getting greedy. She'll most likely be at the banquet""Sure thing.""Keep me posted, yeah?"I hum again."I know you're a smart ass predator but sometimes, predators can end up having their asses handed to them""You of all people should know that it doesn't apply to me" I chuckle and he laughs."How can I forget? Anyway, have a great time. I'll be returning in two weeks. Don't miss me too much" he says, a teasing note in his voice.West's elder brother passed away last night. He received the news right after discovering the location of the first seal. Hence, he left for home, earlier today.I put on a hat and stare at my reflection in the mirror. The sight of my dressing makes me cringe with disgust. I look more like a vampire from an old fantasy book."Whatever" I respond to West's statement and he laughs. Our call ends and I pick my phone from the dresser, slipping it into my pocket.... AT THE BANQUET, The whole place is buzzing with life and the soft music creates the perfect scene. Slipping on a pair of glasses, I scan the place. The banquet venue is almost filled to the brim with all kinds of Ellites. My fingers are already itching in anticipation. I close my eyes and allow myself to feel the atmosphere and let it soak in. Then, I feel it. A powerful tug at my being. It's like my body can recognize what I've been searching for.My eyes fall open and I glance up the stairs to find a short man wearing a golden three-piece suit standing there with a glass of champagne in hand. He is wearing the seal around his neck like a pendant.Grinning to myself, I grab a glass of champagne off a tray and make a beeline for the stairs. In a couple of seconds, I'm standing behind him. He bumps into me from behind and turns to look at me. As soon as he does that, I move closer to him and bury my claws in his guts. He chokes, eyes wide with horror."Gotcha" I whisper in his ear and he begins to tremble. Before he can recover, I rip the pendant off his neck, separating his head from his body, in the process. His head falls downstairs and chaos breaks out. While everyone is scrambling for safety, I start to make my way towards the exit."Not so fast" I freeze at the sound of the oddly familiar feminine voice I've just heard. I am aware that I am not the only one who is after the seals. But, I'm surprised that a woman with such a sweet voice, is the first person to confront me. While I'm contemplating on my next line of action, I feel the sharp edge of a knife pressed against the small of my back."Give me the seal."FEW HOURS BEFORE THE BANQUET.VIOLET My date looks nervous and can barely make eye contact with me. He keeps fidgeting on his seat and the constant act of him clearing his throat is already starting to annoy me. My sister had set me up on a blind date. Apparently, he is a friend of hers. It is the only reason why I'm not walking out of the diner right now. "Do you like your food?" Malcolm asks after what feels like decades. "It's nice. I like it" I respond and he licks his lower lips. "I don't know much about you. Can you enlighten me?" he says, bringing a glass of red wine to his lips. For a moment, I'm distracted by the vibrant color of the liquid as he gulps it down. I realize that I'm actually starving. The last time I drank blood is five days ago. I've been quite busy with work. "... listening?" I blink, refocusing my attention on Malcolm who looks puzzled. "Sorry, what were you saying?" I ask, giving him an apologetic smile. He parts his lips to say something but
DAKOTA Few hours before the banquet. Clenching my fists, I tap my right foot on the ground, repeatedly. The silence is discomforting, almost eerie. For the past sixty minutes, I've been sitting here in this large room with it's imposing paintings and jarring interior decorations. On the center table is a bottle of wine and a couple of wine glasses. My anxiety is peaking. Earlier, I'd been summoned by The Six. I'd stepped out of the house and had arrived at a strange looking building. My limbs had moved of their own accord. I find it disturbing. But, what can I do? The Six basically gave me a rare opportunity, I don't have a choice."You're here."I look up, my gaze meeting Landon's warm ones. He's standing in front of the door, a hint of a smile on his lips. He walks towards me and sits on the couch directly opposite me. He picks up the bottle of wine and opens it. I watch him as he pours the red liquid into two of the wine glasses. He hands one of them to me. I hesitan
DAKOTA "Give me an answer, Dakota. Did someone ask you to go after the seals?" "What seals? What on Earth are you talking about?" I demand, deciding to feign ignorance. "You know exactly what I'm talking about. Don't lie to me" he spits, his eyes flashing with rage. He is intimidating this way. It is taking me so much will power to stand upright before him. "I told you, I don't know what you're talking about! Stop accusing me!" I cry out. His expression falters, confusion written all over his face. "Get your hand off my mate, right now."I freeze at the sound of Hunter's voice. Dashiell's frown deepens. Slowly, he releases my hand from his grip."Your mate?" Hunter approaches us and takes my hand in his. His gaze meets Dashiell's."You heard me." My heart sinks. If Hunter was Dakota's mate and Dashiell is my mate, my secret is bound to be exposed. The only way to prevent it from happening is to block my scent, subsequently blocking out Dashiell's ability to sense me. "S
DASHIELL"...signed contracts... Ashville...CEO will be visiting today...Sir? Are you alright?" I can vaguely hear the voice of my PA.I lower my head, trying to breathe through the gut wrenching pain threatening to rip me apart. "Sir? Should I get help? You don't look so good-""I'm fine" I cut him off, leaning back on my chair as my vision dulls. A groan escapes my lips as the pain reaches it's peak, nearly bringing me to my knees. I can no longer tell where I am."Dash! Hey! Focus!...at me!" West's voice drifts into my ears as I struggle to stay conscious. Slowly, the pain lessens. I can now make out the feeling of West patting my face to keep me awake. "You can stop doing that, West" I mutter, exhaling slowly."What the hell just happened? You scared me!" He stresses, his eyes wide. "I don't know""Do you need to lie down?""I'm fine. I just..I just need to catch my breath" I whisper, keeping my eyes closed. "This can't be normal. It's been years....No....decades since I've
DAKOTA The tension between Dashiell and the newcomer is edge cutting. West looks worried. He seems to be aware of the history between the two. At first, I had mixed feelings about Violet. Now that she has appeared again, I have realized that she's the member of the Guild Landon had spoken of. She is beautiful, anyone can see that. Clad in a pair of white pants, black ankle boots, a t-shirt and a black leather jacket, Violet is a solid ten. I can tell by merely looking at her. Needless to say, she's giving off ex girlfriend vibes. "What are you doing here?" Dashiell is the first to snap out of his haze. She ignores his question, her gaze drifting and meeting mine."You must be making friends already. Who is she?" She states. "You haven't answered my question, Violet" "What's with the unfriendly stare, Dash? We used to be crazy in love with each other, remember?"The look in her eyes says otherwise. She's still in love with him. I avert my gaze to Dashiell. I'm startled by how cold h
DAKOTA Denial cannot get me out of this mess. At the moment, my mind has gone blank. "Cat got your tongue?" Dashiell says, a smug expression on his face."I...I..uh""Shouldn't you be happy? You said you have feelings for me. So, why did you keep it from me?" Dashiell is smart. If he knows that there's something I'm lying about, he won't hesitate to behead me."Alright, guys. Can we go somewhere private to talk? You're already attraction attention to yourselves" West comments. Dashiell and I turn away to look around. Sure enough, there are students eyeing us with curiosity. Desperate to somehow sneak away, I begin to rush towards the opposite direction. When I realize that he isn't following me, I quicken my pace until I get to the park. Heaving a sigh of relief, I take a seat on one of the metal benches. "That was a close one" I mutter, closing my eyes. "Who said it was over? Did I?" My blood runs cold at the sound of Dashiell's voice. My eyes shoot open, our gazes clashi
DAKOTA Scarlett, West and I are awkwardly sitting on a bench under one of the trees in the school park. Needless to say, I didn't think something like this would happen. "So, who's your friend?" Scarlett asked. "His name is West. We met at the hospital" It is the first thing that comes to my mind. West eyes me with displeasure. But, the thing is, it was in the spur of the moment. There's no time to think. "At the hospital?" Scarlett asks, her eyes filled with concern. "That's right. West has leukaemia" I tell her. West glares at me and Scarlett's gaze softens."I'm so so sorry, West. If you're friends with Kota, you must be a good person" she utters. West gives her a smile. "I try to live rightly. Besides, I don't have a lot of time left. It's hard but I'll get through it" West plays along with me. Scarlett places a hand over his and squeezes gently. "If you need anything, I'll gladly offer my help if it is within my capacity " "Thank you...uh..""It's Scarlett. Scarle
DAKOTA "What are you talking about?" I say, moving backwards out of Hunter's grip. Sweat rolls down my spine, my heart pounding against my rib cage. Hunter is barely containing his rage, it is written all over his face. "You know what I'm talking about, don't you?!" He rages, his nose flaring. He's not going to hit me, is he? I can't help but think. If I failed to find a way out of this mess, the situation could spiral out of hand. Dragging in a shaky breath, I gaze up at Hunter with the most sincere expression I can muster. "Calm down, Hunter. This is probably as a result of my near death experience," I tell him.His frown deepens, confusion written all over his face."But-""You don't trust me. Why?" I breathe, pushing my hair away from my face.He lowers his gaze, his frown fading."I'm sorry. I've been on edge. I shouldn't have-"Again, I cut him off."Forget it, Hunter. I just want to get some sleep. I want to be alone " I say, turning away from him. "Kota, I'm really sorry-
Thank you for giving this book a chance, you're such a darling!!!I've been writing this book since last two years and finishing it has been such a task. I've been super busy, and at some point, I had writer's block. But, I really wanted to finish it. If you have questions about the characters, please ask away. I'm also thinking of writing a book based on West and his new love interest. If you also want this, please indicate. Thank you once more for taking the time to read this book. Please check out my other books if you have the time.Much love!Mwaaa!
DAKOTA I stare at the double line on the pregnancy test strip in my grip, my eyes widening. My mind is reeling, and I'm yet to wrap my head around this new reality."I'm pregnant," I breathe, lowering myself onto the closed toilet, my heart thumping faster against my chest. A smile tugs at my lips and happy tears fill my eyes. I've been married to my husband for barely a year and he has always wanted kids of his own. Due to the trauma of how I'd died without getting to see our child, I'd dismissed the thought of getting pregnant, every time it came to my mind. The knock on the door startles me, and I flinch, nearly jumping out of my skin. The door creaks open, and Dashiell pokes his head in, with a longing look on his face. "You've been in there for way too long. Will you come to bed now? I already miss you," he whispers.Unable to fight off the smile coming on, I quickly rise up to my feet, making a quick attempt to hide the pregnancy test strip from him, in a bid to brin
DAKOTA Dashiell lets out a groan, tilting his head to the side to stare at Madam Noir. Slowly, his gaze trails downwards, resting on the black restraints around his wrists, torso and feet. "What is this? Were you not thinking when you tied me up this way?" He asks, his voice thick with disbelief. She shrugs, a smug expression on his face."It doesn't matter. You can't move. I made sure you wouldn't be able to," she drawls, and a frown creases Dashiell's brows. He turns to look at me, his gaze softening."Why is she here? I'm the one you want," he states. "Isn't she so perfectly made for you? With her power, we won't need the rest of the seals to create more seals," Madam Noir says, and I glare at her."I won't let you touch him," I hiss, and she chuckles."That's adorable," she replies. Dashiell releases an exasperated sigh and lowers his head, his gaze pinned on the floor in front of him. "Leave her out of this... please," he rasps, and Madam Noir's expression darkens with
DAKOTA It hits me like a storm. Sitting in Hunter's living room with no clue of how I'd gotten here in the first place, I try to sort out my thoughts. Bits and pieces of my memories finally return to me, and I wince at the memory of throwing a mug at my own mate. Hunter walks in with a cup of coffee and beams at me. His smile fades when he notices that I'm standing in his room awkwardly."What's wrong?" He asks, his voice tinged with uncertainty."I want to go home," I tell him, and he furrows his brows at me."I guess the spell wore out," he mumbles, and I frown at him, puzzled."I liked you better when you were under the spell," he tells me, lowering the cup of coffee on the nightstand. I move backwards, glancing at the door behind me. "Not so fast, princess."I freeze at the sound of Madam Noir's voice at the entrance of the room. She walks in and smacks me on the back of my neck. Instantly, my knees go weak, and she drags me further into the room with Hunter's help. Pl
DASHIELL The moment the statement leaves my mouth, regret slams into me, hard. I should know better. My mate wouldn't betray me to be with someone else."It's a long story. I ran into Hunter," she tells me, and I stiffen. "Did he hurt you?" I ask, and she shakes her head, a few locks of her red hair falling over her face."He knows everything," she rasps, and I raise a brow, puzzled."Everything? Including who you really are? You told him?" She heaves a sigh, brushing her hair away from her face."Madam Noir got to him first. I'm not sure if he's just neutral about the whole thing. I don't know if he's on her side. I feel like I'm missing the big picture," she tells me, and lets out a yawn. "You should get some rest, you look exhausted," I say, and her gaze softens."So do you."I crack a smile, and she returns it. "Don't do that again. I understand that you were desperate to find me, but being intimate with another woman just doesn't sound right," she says."I know. I w
DAKOTA "If you make a sound, I'm going to slit your throat. Do you understand?" Hunter whispers in a menacing tone, and I nod frantically, squeezing my eyes shut. My heart thumps madly against my rib cage as I feel him sweep me off my feet, swinging me over his shoulder like a sack. I part my lips to let out a scream, but I decide against it when I feel him align his claws with my spine. He heads down the alley and places me in a car parked down the street. He proceeds to drive off instantly. Too petrified to do anything, I remain silent. He still doesn't know who I really am, and I want to keep things that way. "Won't you ask me where I'm taking you to?" He suddenly breaks the silence while he glances at me through the front mirror. Avoiding his gaze, I direct my gaze outside the window, watching the rain fall on the rough asphalt on the road. "You literally just kidnapped me. How do you expect me to feel?" I retort. "What did he do? He did something, didn't he?" Hunter
DAKOTA My stomach churns with tension as I hold out a trembling hand towards the transparent glass while a strong feeling of nostalgia hits me. The moment the tips of my fingers connect with the glass, a tremor runs through my body, several cracks appearing on the tank. Dashiell stumbles backwards with me in his arms. As if on cue, the glass shatters and my floating body collapses to the bottom of the tank. In that instant, my vision bleeds white and I'm suddenly left with a feeling of bleak emptiness. Terrified, I reach out for my mate's subconsciousness. However, I fail to reach him every time I try. Am I dead? I can't help but wonder. While I ponder on this, I hear Dashiell's voice. He's calling out my name with desperation. He's pleading with me to stay with him. In my feverish haze, a feminine voice fills my head. This voice sounds just like Dakota's.'Go to him. You have my blessings.'With a gasp, my eyes shoot open, and a pair of strong arms pull me into an embrace.
DASHIELL Hearing my mate's voice in my head for the first time in days, spurred me into overdrive. Like a storm, I head straight for the headquarters of the Guild. Despite the large numbers of officials that try to get in my way, I don't hesitate to take them down. Once I'm below ground level, I finally encounter the members of the Six. West had taken his time to get me information on every member of the Six. Therefore, it's pretty easy to recognize them."Do you think we will let you through? Surrender now and save yourself the embarrassment," one of them says to me. I snort in amusement. They clearly do not know what I'm capable of. "Hand over your keys. It's going to save you a lot of trouble if you do," I state, and they all stiffen, exchanging bewildered glances with each other."How do you know about the keys?" One of them asks, and I shrug, nonchalantly."It's none of your business. Now, are we doing this or not?" I've barely completed my statement when two members
DAKOTA I'm freezing. This place, which looks more like a dungeon than a prison cell, has no source of illumination. Therefore, everything is pitch black. Ocean growls in my head, her frustration bleeding into me. My head is throbbing, probably from colliding with the floor when I collapsed. With my limbs firmly tied up, my movements are limited. Even so, I am determined to get out of this place. Even if it means that I'll have to crawl out of it. The heavy door creaks open, and Landon walks in. He halts by the door for a moment, his grey eyes watching me with pity. Slowly, he walks towards me and crouches in front of me, bringing a hand to my face."It's such a pity. I had such great plans for you, but you ruined it all. I believed in you, Mel. You disappointed me. Now, you will have to pay the price for it," he whispers, brushing my hair away from my face.Pulling away from him, I rest my head on the wall."That's quite funny, you know? You claim to have big plans for me, but
