The antiseptic smell of the hospital assaulted Sofia's senses as they walked through the sliding doors. The fluorescent lights cast a harsh glow over everything, making the world feel surreal and slightly off-kilter. Luca's hand on the small of her back was the only thing keeping her grounded.

Elena led the way to the intensive care unit, her medical credentials allowing them to bypass the usual visitor restrictions. As they approached the nurses' station, a familiar voice called out.
