Araceli should have known better than to let herself get caught alone in the hallway. But when she turned the corner of the hallway, Nico was already there, leaning against the wall like he’d been waiting.

He straightened up the second he saw her, his expression unreadable until his mouth twisted into that familiar smirk. He’d been thinking over the reason she ended up in his brother’s house and he thought he finally got it.

“I mean… really, Araceli?” he said, voice low and condescending. “Are you that desperate? You started working with my brother just to get closer to me?”

She blinked, stunned. “What?”

“You heard me. Only God knows how you managed it”

She was already backing up a little, her breath catching.

“You have to let this go,” Nico continued, tone harsher now. “Whatever crazy obsession you think you have with me—it’s time to bury it.”

“It's not an obsession,” Araceli said sharply, her voice trembling. It’s God's will, she wanted to add but figured she shouldn’t. “Working her

She couldn’t stay here. She tried. God, she really tried to think of a way to make it work. To tell herself it was just a nightmare, that she could ride it out. But there was no convincing her mind or heart anymore. Not after everything she’d seen today. Not after witnessing her boss kill two men mercilessly, not after his disgusting confession that he was the one who had snuck into her room pretending to be the devil and leaving a mark on her. Not after being cornered in that dungeon and feeling her life hang by a thread. And definitely not after the humiliation she’d suffered in front of Nico, land his wife. She couldn’t do it. So she did the only thing she could think of Frantically, she packed and shoved the few belongings she had into her satchel. Dresses crumpled, bible bent, shoes mismatched. She didn’t care. She didn’t know where on earth she would go. Maybe Miss Maggie? Although she couldn’t live with her as the old woman’s hands were already full and she’d never wan

Araceli’s heart pounded as she followed him. Even though she made sure to keep a wide distance between them, every step she took after him felt like walking deeper into the lion’s den. She didn’t want to be alone with him but the fear of disobeying him was far more terrifying. So she followed. As far behind him as she was she could still see the muscles of his broad back contract with every step he took and every movement of his body. His shirt clung to him like a second skin and it was obvious that the muscles under it were hard as rock. Araceli gulped. The man’s size was unnerving to her and his looming presence threatened to swallow her whole. When they reached the study, he pushed the door open and strode in like a king returning to his throne. He dropped into the leather chair behind the desk and leaned back with all the entitlement of a man about to deliver a decree that would ruin lives and not care one bit.Araceli froze in the doorway. This room didn’t feel the same anymore.

The scent of warm bread and simmering broth filled the small kitchen, wrapping Araceli in a familiar comfort. She perched on the edge of an old wooden chair, her hands folded neatly in her lap as she watched Mrs. Maggie bustle about the stove. The older woman, round and sturdy, moved with ease in the kitchen, ladling a thick stew into a large container.“You don’t eat enough, child,” Mrs. Maggie chided without turning around. “You’re all skin and bones. What good is faith if you don’t have the strength to carry it?”Araceli smiled faintly, tracing a finger over the lace trim of her skirt. “I eat just fine, Mrs. Maggie. But thank you for the food. I know you don’t have to—”“Nonsense.” Mrs. Maggie turned, waving her wooden spoon. “What kind of Christian woman would I be if I let you starve?”Across the room, Mrs. Maggie’s grandchildren sat on the rug, giggling as they flipped through their picture books. A battered, well-loved copy of Cinderella. The cover was faded, the edges curling,

The ride to the house was quiet.Araceli sat as she always did, with her hands folded neatly in her lap. From the backseat, she snuck glances at Nico from the corner of her eye. He hadn’t said a word to her since they left Ambrose’s house, only offering a short, dismissive “Let’s go.” The entire drive, he had been glued to his phone, murmuring in Italian, his voice smooth and confident. She couldn’t understand a word, so she stayed silent, even though she was bubbling with curiosity and wanted to ask him so many things. What’s your favorite color? What kind of food do you like? Do you enjoy going to church?None of the questions felt right though. How did one start a conversation with the man they were meant to marry? She’d hoped Gof would drop a manual in her lap to help her out when this time came. The car rolled to a stop outside a large house. It wasn’t what she expected—it was modern, with sharp angles, glass, and steel, looming like something out of a different world.Nico stepp

Araceli barely slept the night before her ‘big day’She lay awake in the unfamiliar bed, staring at the ceiling, excitement bubbling inside her chest. Today was her wedding day. The day she’d dreamed of.It wasn’t much like her dreams thought, in her dreams, a carriage would be waiting outside and a dozen maidens would be helping her prepare but none of that mattered. As long as she got to stand beside Nico, as long as he finally saw her, truly saw her, it would all be worth it.When the first rays of sunlight peeked through the curtains, she jumped out of bed, smoothing down the wrinkles in her only white dress. It wasn’t much, but it would do. She slipped on her shoes, fastened her necklace around her throat, and ran her fingers through her wavy black hair, doing her best to tame it with what little she had.By the time she was ready, she expected to hear movement in the house—perhaps Nico getting dressed, preparing for the ceremony. But the house was silent. She peeked into his roo

Luciano Salvatore leaned back in his chair in the club like a bored king ignoring his subjects. He barely paid attention to the woman in front of him who was sliding off the pole and dancing like it was her last. She was beautiful, no doubt—a curvy redhead, her body moving with trained seduction under the flashing club lights. But to him, it was nothing more than background noise. A performance he had seen a thousand times. He took a slow sip of his drink, his gaze flicking to the screen of his phone as it buzzed with the notification of a new text. Dante: It’s done. Their warehouse is gone.Luciano nodded as he clicked the call button and lifted the phone to his ear. A moment later, Dante’s voice came through.“It’s done,” Dante repeated. “The Irish won’t be making any more moves on that side of the city. The explosion was clean.”Luciano’s fingers tapped idly against the glass in his other hand. “Casualties?”“Only theirs. None of ours.”“Good. That’s how it should be. Don’t forget

The car slowed to a stop at the foot of the grand estate. Araceli leaned toward the window, her mouth slightly parted as she stared at the towering gates and the mansion beyond them.If Nico’s house had been a mansion, then this was a palace. A fortress of pale stone and tall windows, so big it made her feel even smaller than she already did. When the car door opened, she didn’t move. She was still gazing up at the columns and balconies, wondering how many rooms it must hold, and how many people it would take to fill such a big structure. She was sure the house would be buzzing with life and that sparked excitement in her. She’d only ever lived with Father Ambrose so she always desired to live in a full house.Luciano’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Are you planning on coming in tonight?”“Oh! Sorry,” she squeaked, scrambling out of the car.Luciano turned without waiting for her and began walking up the stone steps. She hurried after him, eyes wide as they moved through the gran

l“Luciano.” Vivienne’s voice cut into his thoughts like nails on glass. She walked in like she owned the place but he didn’t even bother to look up at her.“I’m going to assume you had a lapse in your senses,” he said, voice low and dangerous, “and give you two seconds to walk out the same way you barged in… or I’ll get angrier.” There was no warmth in his tone.It made Vivienne pause. For a moment, her confidence wavered. But then she pushed forward anyway, giving a theatrical sigh.“Jesus, Luciano. You’ve always been cold and distant but now you’re a fucking blizzard. What happened?”He still didn’t look at her. “I don’t like unwanted visitors.”He stepped forward, placed a heavy hand on her shoulder, and for one delusional second, she thought he was about to pull her into his arms.Instead, he spun her toward the door and gave her a dismissive nudge.“On your way.”Vivienne stumbled a little, caught herself, and then turned around, her face a mix of frustration and disbelief. “Luci

Hot white rage coursed through Luciano’s body. His jaw was clenched, he was able to keep his eyes cold and sharp, but it was his fist clutching the fork that truly gave him away. He gripped it so tightly, that the metal began to bend beneath his fingers. So the man she was talking about that night…was his brother. He turned his gaze to Nico, whose eyes were conveniently focused on anything but the table, anything but the people in the room. Was it shame? Embarrassment? Or was it something else?Luciano didn’t know. He just knew he wanted to release this rage in him. No, it wasn't just rage. What the hell is this unfamiliar feeling sitting in the pit of my stomach? Why did he want to pull out his gun and shoot at something or someone or maybe everything and everyone until the table was a bloody mess?He glanced back at his brother’s face—still red, still avoiding eye contact. What does he feel about her? he wondered. Does he feel anything at all? And then another, darker thought crept

The moment Araceli saw his face, her soul dropped several feet into the ground. It was like being punched in the stomach violently and cruelly and all the air was ripped from her lungs. Her eyes lit up in pure, unfiltered shock. Is this a cruel joke?Is her entire life just some kind of twisted comedy? No… not a comedy.A horror film for sure. She tried to breathe, but her chest wouldn’t expand. Her vision blurred. The man standing before her was Nico. Her Nico. The man God had ordained for her. The man who had humiliated her abandoned her and married someone else on their supposed wedding day.The man who now looked at her like she was dirt under his designer shoes. Her boss’s brother.Gianna’s other uncle…Her knees buckled. It was all too much. The plate she was holding slipped from her hands and shattered against the floor. On the other side of the room, Nico froze. When his eyes met hers. For a moment, he was mortified. But not from guilt. No, the only thing plaguing his mind was

Luciano leaned in again, Araceli flinched violently, expecting the worst—but nothing could have prepared her for the way his lips met her cheek. It wasn’t a kiss. It was a brand. He was possessive, violent, and almost ritualistic in the way he lingered. He kissed it and then licked it. Then sucked it, hot and lingering, like he was trying to take something from her. And finally, he bit down, hard enough to leave a mark.A faint one, but a mark nonetheless. It was revolting to her.Her skin crawled beneath the wet heat of his mouth, a sick, burning trail left behind that made her want to claw it off. She felt violated like he had reached into her chest and tainted something sacred. It was the first time she’d been kissed on the cheek…if she could even call it a kiss.He pulled back, satisfied, as though he’d marked his territory.“Go,” he said simply. She didn’t move. She wasn’t sure if she could move. She stood frozen, cheek still tingling with that disgusting burn. Her entire body w

The moment the words left his lips, Araceli looked up and the breath left her lungs.Raw horror swam in her wide eyes, her pupils blown wide with disbelief and panic. Her chest pounded so violently she had to clutch the space over her heart, as though squeezing it could somehow force it back into rhythm. But nothing could stop the way her entire body screamed for escape.Luciano kept advancing, his steps slow and deliberate. He drank in the sight of her—trembling, terrified, utterly at his mercy. A smile tugged at his lips. He thought her joy and laughter were good but her fear was absolutely mesmerizing to him, especially knowing he was the cause. That he had her trembling this way.So… the little saint saw everything. She saw the devil in action. How the hell did she even get down here? It should’ve worried him.But it didn’t. Instead, it thrilled him.He was glad she saw because he was done hiding. Done pretending and most importantly he was done holding back. He wanted her and he
