James waited impatiently for his coffee while flipping through some gossip magazine on the coffee table. He had managed to get away from work for a little while and traveled quickly in his private jet. The trip had taken about three hours and he had arrived right on time.
Last Tuesday he had sent several emails, until two days later he decided to fly to Seattle. After catching the flight, he sent a few more emails quoting Luna at the agency and when she responded, he was already in town.
The clock had him too desperate. He was already getting nervous, though he tried not to show it.
"Um, excuse me?," a young woman asked, standing in front of him. A young woman asked, standing in front of him. She sat down across from him. He looked up, "Are you James?," he nodded, "Oh, nice to meet you, I'm Luna"
"A pleasure, Miss Scaloni" he said with a gentile smile on his face.
"Have you come all the way from New York?" She asked shyly.
"Yes." He adjusted his tie. "I'm sorry I sounded so...pressured, I just don't have a lot of time".
"That's okay, it's understandable. Had you heard of the agency before?" She smiled. James sighed nervously. He was anxious.
"I heard about Gold Nest from a friend. I know it's a reliable site, I took the trouble to check out the website and you caught my eye. I don't want to beat around the bush with this, I'll tell you what I want. I need help with my daughter Portia, and I want to make sure I hire a good person."
"How old is Portia?"
"She just turned 5 years old. She's very young, and let's just say, because of my job, I haven't been able to spend a lot of time with her."
"Well, I've babysat quite a few children that age, or thereabouts. Have you read my references? You can check them if you need to."
"I already have." James said quickly. Luna smiled
"Oh, cautious."
"I need someone who cares about her. In a real way. We lost her mother when she was too little and even though I know it's not possible to replace her, but she needs, even if it is, a companion." he exclaimed.
"Have you had other nannies?"
"Yes, but they weren't compatible. I just...want her to feel accompanied. My daughter is not in very stable health, she's very weak. And with you by her side, she might be better off. I'll try to spend more time with her, if it's necessary to help."
"Well... I have no problem with that. I like children. I really think it could work. If you wish, I could start next week."
"Could it be tomorrow?" he asked quickly. Luna was a little surprised by the hasty proposal.
"I'm sorry, I don't think tomorrow will be possible, if we arrange for...."
"Please, Miss Scaloni, if it's for the salary or the instance of the month, we can arrange it. I don't want to sound suspicious or strange but I need help."
"It's not about the money, Mr. Bexell..."
"James, call me James."
"Well, it's not about the money, James. It's... It's just, don't you think it would be a bit drastic to introduce a nanny to your daughter overnight? If I go in two days, maybe you can get her ready. Tell her I'm coming to see her."
"No, I know she'll be fine now. Portia is already prepared. She's spent the last two months asking for a babysitter," he finished.
Luna thought about it. She replied,
"Well, I...I could go. I just need some time to organize a few things."
"Perfect, I have no problem. We can do something. A week," he whispered, "you can take a week to get to know Portia. She won't see you as anything special yet, I'll just introduce you to her as a new friend, then, maybe, if she likes you and everything goes as I hope, we could talk to her. Do you think so?" he waved his hands firmly.
"That would be..." James's plan was quite clear, he was desperate, "Fine, I'll do it. But I need to know a few things first, it's part of the job, just basic data."
"God," he sighed relieved: "You don't know how grateful I am."
"I need to prepare some papers... and some other things."
James nodded.
The large, white office was quiet compared to other days. Jamie Steel, the agency owner, was rereading the contract. She liked to make sure everything was correct.
It didn't take long to finalize and close the deal, and based on the paperwork and everything that went with it, she could safely say it was a sure thing and reliable.
It was also a good contract for Luna, with good pay and security. She had worked for wealthy people before, and the agency was mostly dedicated to helping them. Many were cold-hearted and left their children alone without caring too much and few were really interested in giving them anything other than material things. She hoped this would be different.
James started walking, and Luna quickly followed him. After a few seconds, she could distinguish the large champagne-colored van."Get in." He said as he opened the door. She climbed into the passenger side and quickly James climbed in beside her."Well, for this week, I'll tell you some rules you'll have to follow." He said seriously, although he was quite happy. "Not to be too strict, it'll just be a few.""That's all right.""You'll write these down mentally. Rule number one: you will do with Portia only what I allow you to do. I have already experienced uncomfortable situations with other nannies, and I don't think it's good for them to do something with my daughter that I wouldn't do with her, or allow. Rule number two: you can ask her certain questions, but I will tell you which ones you CANNOT ask. Nothing about her mother or family in general. About her grandmother, maybe. Rule number three: if you stay, you will be assigned a room. Your house, my house. But you can't bring st
The heat was abounding in New York. It was a sunny enough morning to set up a pool right there. It had been 19 and a half hours since James and Luna had left Seattle. It had been a drastic change for her to leave the way she had, but it had been her first reaction, and if everything went wrong, she could come back as promised. She had no relatives besides her mother, or anything like that, so it just didn't matter much. When they arrived, a black van was waiting for them outside the building they had gone to after the airport. Luna seemed a little surprised to see how he was being treated in New York, even though he himself had told her not to get carried away by it.He came across as a serious, stubborn, complicated and rather annoying man at times. He was someone quite determined, and would not take "no" for an answer under any circumstances. They expected to arrive before eleven o'clock in the morning, and of course, he would find himself with a little one trying to find out where
The imaginary water fell into the cup Portia had given Luna. They had finished gathering every feather in the room, and then Portia had found the perfect place to hide the bag; under her bed.James still hadn't shown up, Rose hadn't either, although sooner or later she would have to talk to her."Would you like something with your tea, Luna?" she said in some kind of British accent. Quite original."Sugar, please." she asked politely."Well, here you are." she said handing over a small white cup.Luna poured herself some sugar I would imagine and tasted her tea."It's delicious!" Lun exclaimed, smiling. Portia mimicked her."I made it myself." she confessed proudly."Well, you make wonderful tea.""Yes, thank you." she smiled. "Are you a friend of Dad's?""Yes, I am.""He doesn't usually have many people over, unless it's Uncle Peter. He doesn't usually spend much time with me.""Oh, doesn't he? Well, I'm sure he'll spend a little more time with you now.""Really?""Yes.""Do you want
James held Portia gently as they stood in line for tickets. The theater was too big and there were too many people waiting to get in.He was too anxious and desperate to get a ticket and get out to the theater, but there were still about 4 people ahead of him and there was nothing they could do to get ahead of him."Luke could be here waiting in line for us" He said gruffly."But Portia wanted to get in line" Luna said subtly. He looked at her threateningly."I just said we could have saved ourselves this annoying line. You could also buy tickets over the phone, or online, but no..."He said angrily. Luna laughed "Did I say something funny?""Nothing, James".The line was going too slow. Luna understood, they had been in line for 20 minutes and he just wanted to get out of the place. Although considering how little they did these activities together, what did it cost him? From James's reaction, it was understandable that he hadn't been with Portia too long and maybe this was something
- How was the movie, huh? -James asked, holding Portia. The little girl smiled as her father carried her. The movie was over and they left the theater along with Luke.- I liked it. It was good - she said in a relaxed manner. James smiled.-Just good?- Excellent! - she shouted.-And what did you think, Luna? -he asked with a smile. He looked different smiling.-It was...good. I've been waiting to see that movie. Very much - she said smiling. James looked at her for a few seconds.-Did something happen? I've noticed you looking a little strange. - He asked looking at her attentively. Luna blushed.-No, nothing, it's just that I need to get used to the situation. You know... changing cities very fast. -She said nervously and giggled.-Okay? -He said smiling- Come on, honey. -He said and took her hand.James motioned for Luna to get in the van, took the girl's hand and then climbed in.James talked to Luke for a few seconds and then climbed into the van.An awkward silence filled the ca
Luke put his jacket back on and got out of the van. The driver waited for James, Portia and Luna to get out so he could drive the van to the garage.James was carrying Portia, who was asleep, and Luna was carrying her coat. It wasn't very late, it was almost six o'clock and the little girl was taking a short nap.As they entered, James laid his daughter down on the large living room couch and took off his coat.Luna looked at him seriously.-Do you want me to take her to her room? -She asked, looking at him intently. James snorted.-It's pretty much the same thing, she'll be fine.-No. It's not. Upstairs she has a comfortable bed, here.... It's fine.-This couch is extremely comfortable.- And your bed? - she asked.-Of course it is. It's one of the best. Portia needs a place to sleep peacefully. Because of her health condition, she's had to rest and be comfortable on more than one occasion.-Then she won't want to go to her room? -Luna said.James slowly turned around.-I'm sensing a
Luna laughed with Portia as she just guffawed. She was a cute little girl.James wasn't out of work yet, even though it was twenty minutes away and the little girl wasn't ready yet.-Okay, princess, how about we go get you ready so when your daddy comes we can go to the doctor?Portia nodded.-Okay. - She said and stood up with a big smile on her face- But I don't want to go to the doctor.-Why not?-It's boring. I want to go to the circus. -she said smiling. Luna smiled. She remembered what James told her.-Baby, I can't tell you anything. When your father arrives, you'll ask him. Well?-Why?-Well, he's your dad and he wants to take care of you. We can't not listen to him. Besides, you'll get me in trouble. -she said and smiled.-Okay. I'll wait for Dad. - She ducked her head.Sometimes she thought about how much she'd like to start her own family, to have a nice house, not too big, not too small.Luna dressed Portia in a T-shirt of her favorite character, a black jogging suit, snea
Portia had been vomiting and bleeding from her nose all night. Her father had done nothing but worry, and that made her nerves more nervous, so she was more irritable.Rose had quickly gone with Luke to buy everything she needed for the girl, and Luke and Luna had been left in charge of her. The night seemed to go on forever.-Okay, stay here. It's okay. I'll go downstairs and come back, okay? -James asked. Portia nodded. He gave Luna a quick, serious look that showed he was overly concerned. He quickly left the room and Portia stared at the ceiling.- Will it be like last time? - she asked.- I don't know. What was it like last time? -She asked, looking at the clock. Five o'clock in the morning.-There were a lot of doctors, and my arm hurt. My body hurt too, and I couldn't walk. -she sighed. Luna felt sorry.-Really? Well, I don't think so this time. -She said trying to calm the little girl down. She smiled.-Will you stay with me?-Of course, I'll be here as long as you need.- I d
