Kaya

I knew in a little bit, I would be teaching the kids some things about hunting. Before then, I figured I would talk to my mother. "Mom." I mind-linked. "Oh, Kaya, I am so glad to hear from you." She was always happy to hear from me. I had talked to her after the whole Jack thing. Nieva spoke to her, too. I tried to talk to her every other day. "Mom, you are going to be a grandmother." "You are pregnant?" "Yes, I am." "I am so excited. Now tell me everything."

"Well, the doctor here told me not to eat raw meat, said I am at a risk of parasites." "Well, that is a load of crap." "I know I told Cade as much. I thought it was pointless to even go see him. I wanted you to tell me everything I needed to know. You know better than anyone you had five kids." "Yes, okay, alright, well, you know you need to not be the one taking down the big animals if you go hunt. Only rabbit, maybe, but even they are prone to biting." "Okay." "Also, you can shift, but you know that you can't d

Cade I sat there with Mark in the office. "Congratulations. I can't believe you are going to be a dad." "Thanks; I don't know how cut out I am for it, though." "Nah, you will be fine. You know Helen is super excited. She says now we can have a baby." "I told you before. You guys didn't need to wait for me to have a child. You could have had one a long time ago." "I know, but we wanted kids the same ages as yours." I smiled. I had hated that they waited for me. I knew Helen wanted a baby really badly. Well, when her heat came later in the year, I knew they would for sure get pregnant. "So the pack is excited." "I know they have been offering me congratulations since I told them." "They are excited to have the next alpha be born." "You know it could be a girl, right Mark." "Nah, Alphas always have boys first." "Jack didn't." "Jack was not a strong alpha. You will have a son to pass the pack onto." "What if I don't, though, and we can't have any more children." "You are worrying too mu

CadeApril was here, and I watched as Kaya rolled over, her stomach growing daily. She had a sizable baby bump. She was halfway through her pregnancy, and I felt good about it. Howi had not attacked yet. It was peaceful. The snow had stopped, and everything seemed to be going well. Kimi would be remaining with us. Which I was happy about. Kaya wanted her around to be there for the birth. Her mother also wanted to come, but she had yet to tell us if she was coming. Just then, I got a mind link. "Alpha, we have wolves wanting to cross the border." I sat straight up in the bed. Was this it? No, it couldn't be. Howi would not ask to cross the border. "Who is it?" "I don't know. They are in their wolf form; we can't speak. They didn't cross over the boundary but are standing close to it. Not attacking or anything." "Hang on, I am on my way." I gave Kaya, who was still sound asleep, a kiss. She slept a lot lately. I mind-linked Mark, telling him to hurry up and come with me.

Kaya I felt Cade move into his spot next to me in the bed. I turned over to face him. He looked worried. I mind-linked him. "Cade, what happened." "Charlie is here." "What?" "Howi's pack attacked him. There were only five of them who survived. He joined our pack and his four other wolves. They are all now shadow pack." I lay there at him, looking horrified, no doubt. I didn't understand why Howi would go after them. They had nothing to gain by going after them. Charlie's pack was tiny. It's smaller than the Crescent Moon Pack. The whole thing seemed strange. "Why would he join us? He is an alpha." I mind-linked. "I don't know; he probably was ashamed he let it happen. He didn't think he could build the pack back up. When I was younger, and most of us were slaughtered, we had more than five of us survive, but I don't know how he could rebuild with only five people." I didn't even know what to say. I was just horrified that this had happened. "We are meeting once they get so

CadeI sat there in the office with both Mark and Kaya. Charlie would be here any minute. Then we would have a better idea of what was happening or, at the very least, know what happened to his pack that no longer existed. Kaya was sitting down, her feet up on the little table. Her legs had swollen up again. She had been on them too much. I was honestly worried about the preeclampsia. We were able to go to the doctor earlier as Charlie and the rest of his group had slept most of the day. The doctor was concerned that her blood pressure was so high. He said the swelling would worsen and that she needed to pull back more. She was not happy with this news. But I knew she would do what she could to improve the situation. No one she had grown up with had this much swelling so early in their pregnancy, and though she tried to act like she was not worried, I could see past that. I knew she was more concerned than she let on. The doctor said the swelling would get worse and pr

KayaI was so fucking uncomfortable. Everything felt stiff. But I tried not to focus on it. I needed to focus on what Charlie was about to tell us. I needed to know what happened to his pack and why only five of them survived. It could help Shadow Pack when Howi came for us. I had doubted he would even attack since it had been months since Jack died, and he had remained silent. We had not heard anything, so I assumed Cade's worries were just fictional, but knowing that he went after Charlie's pack, I was now worried. Charlie looked right at me, and then he began to speak. "I was sound asleep when I heard the screams. I came running out of the packhouse. I don't know why those guarding the border never alerted me, but they didn't. I don't know if silver was used or they just died before they could have told me. My beta had also heard the screams, so both of us ran out to see what was going on. We were engaged by hundreds. Both of us fought and fought. So many surrounded us

CadeA long silence fell once Charlie had left my office. I looked at Kaya, who still had her legs down. I mind-linked her. "Put your feet back up." She didn't argue and did as I told her to. I couldn't help but wonder what the stress of all this was doing to her body. She was already struggling, and now she had more to worry about. I should have had her sit out of the meeting. But she was the Luna of Shadow Pack and deserved to be here. No matter the fact, I wanted her to remain stress-free for the remainder of her pregnancy. Mark broke the uncomfortable silence. "That was bad." He signed as he talked. Kaya nodded at his comment. "Well, at least we now know Howi has taken over Jack's Pack," Mark said. "Well, we now know he has the numbers to overrun us. But many things we need to know are still up in the air. Like how did he make it so border patrol could not link." Kaya signed. "It had to be silver. There is no other explanation. They would have alerted someone over the m

KayaCade and I decided it would be best to get the baby's stuff early. According to the doctor, and I had to agree with him, I needed to stay off my feet as much as possible. So, Cade and I were in the car on our way to the city to get some things. Apparently, there was a lot to get for babies in the South. Where I was from, it was hand-made clothes and a form of a carrier to carry them when you did work. That consisted of a board and a lot of bedding to keep warm. But Helen and some of the other women in the pack had told me there were many other things, like bottles and better carriers for children. Not to mention nursery stuff. I didn't know much about things like that. I also know they used disposable diapers here, which excited me. In the North, all nappies had to be washed and reused, and honestly, growing up with younger siblings, I had to wash some of those, and I hated it. Now, I was super excited I got to skip that part. So Cade said we would go to the city.

KayaWe sat down with our food at a picnic table. The weather was great as it was spring and had not gotten too hot yet. It was warmer than anything I had ever been in, but it was not bad. We ate without talking, and I sipped on my smoothie. Once we finished, Cade looked at me. He seemed nervous all of a sudden. "What is it?" I signed. "Kaya, I don't know how to say this, but you must leave Shadow Pack." I nearly spit my drink out. "What do you mean?" I signed. "Kaya, I can't have you around the fighting, and if we have to flee to the north, you can't make the trip." I sat there at him dumbstruck. I then threw my head back and laughed. He must be out of his mind if he thought I would do any of that. I would remain by his side. It was my job as his mate. I would not be parted from him. I never knew how my brother did it when he came down south. It was always for a few days, but even then, I knew he missed his mate. When my dad did it before him my mother would be so sad and

KayaI lay there in the bright light and sat up suddenly. A woman was standing next to me. She was beautiful. Her long white hair was to her feet. Her white skin had a glow. And her white eyes were looking right at me. "My daughter Kaya." I could hear her. "Yes, in here, you can hear and talk. Try it." I opened my mouth and thought about what I wanted to say. "Who are you?" It took me back to hear my voice. The women smiled. "You are in my home." I looked around. It was pure white. "I also frequent the land where all my children go when they die, you know, as the Garden, but this is actually where I live." "But who are you?" "I think you already know the answer." "You are the Goddess." "Yes I am, I am named Selen." I smiled. She had a name. "Do you know why I brought you here instead of the garden with the other wolves who died?" I just shook my head. "Well, I wanted to talk to you." "I wanted to thank you for uniting the North and the South. I always wanted you both to be friends.

CadeWe were running, and I felt it. Kaya was off the link. I tried to mind link her but she didn't respond I let out a roar that shook the trees near us. "Robert." I mind-linked. "Alpha, she is dead." "What happened?" "She, I had to cut the baby out, and she just died." I could feel his emotion over the link. What do I even do? She was gone. How had this happened? She was the strongest wolf I knew. I roared again. I was going to kill Howi, which would be long and drawn out. He had killed my mate. If she had been left alone, she would have been in a hospital. She would be in comfort snuggling our newborn. I didn't know if even the baby would survive. The north, though, was warmer now because of the season, but it would still be cold. There was still snow on the ground. I knew the rest of the pack felt that she had died, and Mark's mind linked me. "Cade." "What?" I yelled through the link while I continued to run. "I am sorry." I snapped my jaws at him. I would not hear about her. No

Kaya I landed just fine. The snow was so much deeper than I thought it would be at this time of the year. Not to mention, it was powder and not hard like ice or packed snow at all. It didn't seem natural. This had to be the Goddess's doing. She had to have made the ground better for falling into. I looked around and Saw Robert lying in the powder. I ran to him. He was lying there limp. I sniffed him. He was still breathing. He needed to be mended. I looked around frantically. There was not much around me. I saw some trees in the distance. There had to be something there. I used my snout to feel around until I felt blood on his shoulder. I used my paw to roll him and saw it went straight through. He would be okay. I didn't know why he was still asleep. They had to have given him something else besides shooting him. The wound was nasty but it could be mended. Maybe they had drugged him again while I was passed out. I tried to mind link, Cade. "Kaya, what is it?" "I was taken. I am, w

Kaya I woke up, and Robert was lounging in a chair. He looked like he had something on his mind. But he seemed like he always had stuff on his mind these days. I was sure it was because I was on bed rest. "Robert." I mind-linked him. "Can we go out to eat? You know the place by the river and eat outside. I want to go hiking, but I know I am supposed to be in bed and I don't think going out to eat counts as breaking the bed rest." "Luna, we need to stay home." My face fell. "Well, then, can I have some moose?" He nodded, and I followed him into the kitchen, where I immediately sat down. He pulled some out of the freeze, immediately put it in the sink, and turned on the water to defrost it. He sat down at the small table with me. "What is it?" I signed. He didn't respond, and I knew something was wrong. "Tell me," I commanded over the link. "Cade mind linked. Howi knows the pack is in the North. No one was there when they went to fight. Howi also knows you are not in the North and is

CadeWe had the spray made. There was so much made that everyone sprayed themselves down. Then, we decided to stagger our movement. So some left already with some deltas. Then another set went yesterday. Today, I was moving out. The people already in Howi's pack had started to set traps. When I got there, I would also set traps. It would take about two days until we were ready to set fires. It was a risk doing it in days as we could get caught. I knew Howi knew we were already coming. When he set his message, it told me he had eyes on us like we did for him. I tore through the woods, my wolf running at a steady pace. I had my bag attached to my back leg with clothes on it. We could not set the traps and fires in wolf form. But fighting we would need to do in wolf form if possible. We are more robust in that form. I ran all day. Stopping at night to rest, then getting up and running again. It was a two-day run to Daybreak pack. Howie had moved his pack to Jack's ho

CadeWe finalized everything. The plan was in motion. The woman who made the perfume had stayed behind with her mate; their oldest son had taken their youngest to the North. Both wanted to stay and fight for the pack. She had agreed to make a spay of skunk, and I, for one, was glad it was not me. I knew that was going to be a stinky job. Robert gave me a report on Kaya after they went to see the OBGYN. He had said she wanted to be left alone and was in a bad mood. But Robert gave me the rundown of what was said. I knew Kaya would be upset, and I wanted to comfort her. She should not be going through this without me. But we had a plan now. We had an idea of how to win. Once the scent was made and we could spray ourselves, we would move into position. It would be a process over days, but I was sure it would go fast once everything was in motion. But we would have to wait until the spray is ready. I hurried off to the training field. It was after lunch training session. T

Kaya Robert and I waited in the OBGYN room. The place was so different from the clinic back at Shadow Pack. I got several looks from the other women waiting. I didn't know if they were staring at me or if they were looking at Robert, who was burly. He resembled a bear. He mind-linked me. "This place is ridiculous, a bit pretentious much?" I cracked a smile. I had been thinking the same thing. I sat there playing with my fingers. "Kaya, they are calling you." I stood and Robert with me. The woman led us back, making me get on a scale and take my height. Suddenly, the woman stopped and turned to me. "I am so sorry. I didn't realize you were deaf, and here I was talking and not looking at you." I read her lips and then looked at Robert. "It is so nice that your husband here can help translate for you." I began to frantically sign that Robert was not my husband. "Oh well, you guys are not married. Not everyone has to be to have a baby. I bet you two are excited." My ange

Cade The morning came, and I waited for Kaya to mind-link me, which she did every morning when she woke up. Even before she left, I noticed that she had started to sleep in later. Growing a werewolf was a lot of work. It was no surprise to me she slept a lot. Today, I would meet with a few people, and we would strategize the best way to take out Howi. Kaya and I reviewed some ideas yesterday, and I liked her suggestion of setting a fire. But that would not be enough. I was eating breakfast with Mark, neither of us talking. In fact, no one in the packhouse was talking. I knew it was because they all missed their loved ones. Everyone, including me, was sullen. I felt Kaya's mind link me. "Cade, good morning." "Good morning, love. Did you sleep well?" "Yes, I wish you could see my toes." "What about them?" "Robert and I went to the aquarium yesterday and got pedicures after lunch. I had them paint them bright pink. It is so cute." I couldn't help but crack a smile." "Oh, and

Kaya Robert and I had met the neighbors, and I felt they already hated me. That or they just didn't understand me. Humans never did understand facial tattoos. I mind linked Cade as soon as I got up. "Cade." "Your awake." "Yeah, did I worry you?" "No, of course not. I figured you were asleep when I tried to mind-link you earlier, but Robert told me you were sleeping. He also said you are going out today." "Yeah, I was going to go out and just wander around the city." "No place in mind?" "No." Being here just a few days was already getting boring. I needed to get out of the house. "Have him take you to Sheels; you liked that place. You could also go to the zoo again or even the aquarium would be fun. Then maybe go get your feet rubbed at a nail place." "Who would rub my feet? That does not seem like a thing." "No, it is. You pay them, and they will wash and rub your feet." "Okay, I will ask Robert about all of that." "Good." "So everyone left this morning, right?" "That
