*** Ariana’s POV

“Off to the library… wherever that is,” I let out a sigh, standing with more questions now than before I sat down.

Focused on my destination and lost in thoughts, I made my way through the hospital’s quiet hallways, a voice drifted through the crack of an open door, Dr. Alexander’s office, catching my attention.

“We’ll have a good dozen willing to be recruited into the guard,” came Draven’s deep voice. “Rogues have a way of doubling down on loyalty when given a second chance.”

A twinge of admiration sparked within me. Draven was willing to take chances on those others saw as a risk. My own father had welcomed outsiders but had never fully trusted them in large numbers. Draven, however, didn’t seem to hesitate.

I kept walking, not wanting to be a nosy body, but my heart did feel a bit lighter knowing that so many were finding a new chance at life here.

Beta Simon’s words came back to me, “Rumors are sometimes just that.” I’m really starting to feel like this pack’s rep

*** Ariana’s POVLinda guided me toward the mess hall, her hand resting lightly on my arm as if to steady me, her voice casual yet firm. “Now, enough hiding out in the kitchen and garden,” she said, “You’re here, and you’re part of us… for a while anyway. Time to join the pack in the mess hall, Miria.”I suppressed a sigh, attempting a smile. “It’s just… it feels like everyone’s watching me.”“Let them watch,” Linda replied, smiling as she led the way. “They’ll get used to you. But trust me, eating together strengthens bonds—it’s important to integrate into the pack’s rhythm.”We entered the mess hall, which was bustling with life. Long tables filled with pack members, laughter, the clatter of dishes, and the rich aroma of freshly cooked food. My stomach rumbled as I eyed the extravagant buffet, far better than the premade meals I’d been grabbing from the kitchen.Linda nudged me, hearing my stomach's reaction to the sight of the extravagant buffet “See? More than worth it.”I had to a

*** Draven’s POVThere he goes tapping again, if he wasn’t my beta, I’d snap his fingers daily to stop the incessant drumming his fingers do when deep in thought. The grim details barely seemed to register with him as he leaned back, arms crossed and face drawn, his expression thoughtful. But I knew Simon well enough to know that this silence held an intensity.“A small celebration,” he muttered, shaking his head, “and not a single survivor.”“Rogues hit them hard,” I replied, glancing over the file. “Main buildings stripped, valuables taken, and a sickening amount of silver. Hazmat will need to go in.”“Silver again,” Simon said, jaw tight. “It’s becoming a signature, these coordinated attacks. Rogues using silver to keep packs from healing, to break them completely.”I nodded, eyes scanning the report. “They aren’t leaving anything behind but destruction. It’s effective, and brutal.”Simon’s gaze shifted, studying my face. “This one’s more than that. The neighboring Twin Oaks pack fo

*** Ariana’s POVWell, that was a total waste of an afternoon. The hospital’s advanced EPIC system was supposed to make research easy, yet I’d found exactly nothing. No medical records, no autopsy reports, no traces of Draven’s past potential Lunas—nothing beyond the usual causes of death going back fifteen years. I’d even combed through physical archives and old report ledgers, hoping for a hidden gem among the dust and faded ink. But all that effort? Zip.Frustration simmered as I trudged back to my quarters, the dusty leather library volumes tucked under one arm. My only consolations were the unexpected warmth Linda and Jasmine had shown earlier, though even their company couldn’t shake off the chill that came with the thought of why these records were so hard to find.Reaching the top floor, I pressed my palm to the secured pad and waited for the familiar click of the Alpha’s restricted access door. The doors slid open, and I let myself into the long corridor, pausing as a shiver

***Ariana’s POV“We’ll start with the basics,” Simon began. “Sprints, burpees, and then a lap around the yard. Let’s see what you’ve got.”Running was familiar territory, my comfort zone, and I settled into the rhythm quickly. I moved through the sprints and burpees, feeling strong. “Solid start,” he said, nodding as I caught my breath. “Now, let’s test that upper body strength.”He led me to a set of uneven bars, indicating that I should pull myself up and make my way across. I gripped the first bar tightly, managing a few pulls, but my arms were shaking before I’d even made it halfway across. I dropped down, breathing hard as I looked back at Simon.“Endurance needs work,” he noted with a slight smirk. “Running’s great, but it won’t help if you’re cornered.”I caught my breath and replied, “Evading is my strong suit.”“Oh?” Simon raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Impress me.”He led me to the edge of the forest, where the dense trees loomed, casting shadows over the ground. I took a de

*** Ariana’s POVAs I padded quietly down the hallway of the packhouse, trepidation started to give way to a flicker of excitement. The Alpha’s office double doors were closed, small blessings. I scooted past the doors, and hurried to the open set of doors a little further down. When I stepped inside, I found a few omegas tidying the space. They nodded warmly before slipping out, and I took in the unexpected sight before me. The room had an opulent feel, like I’d walked into some grand, old-world library. Rich mahogany shelves curved around the circular walls, packed with books that reached from floor to ceiling. A ladder was attached to a track that ran the length of the room, allowing easy access to even the highest shelves. And then there was the desk—a stately, polished mahogany desk, perpendicular to a stone fireplace on the far wall. I stopped in my tracks, staring. It looked like something meant for royalty. It was a little grand for my tastes but there was no denying its appeal

***Ariana’s POV“Fuck…”The alarm on my phone blared, jolting me awake, and I blinked groggily, momentarily disoriented. Where was I? As the hazy moonlight filtered through the windows, I took in my surroundings—my new office, lit just enough by the soft glow outside to make out the leather armchair and mahogany desk. My back was pressed up against the arm of the couch, a surprisingly comfortable makeshift bed for the night.“Oh, right,” I murmured, stretching. I’d moved to the couch last night to do some reading and apparently passed out. Guess training really had wiped me out yesterday if I’d slept straight through without so much as a crick in my neck.Rubbing the last traces of sleep from

Its tailored lines and understated elegance made me think of Jackie Kennedy—a timeless, poised aesthetic I’d never associated with myself. I’d have to thank Linda for this one; she had a knack for picking clothes that felt polished yet unassuming, perfectly suited for someone like me who preferred not to stand out.I smoothed the fabric over my hips, checked my reflection, and mumbled to myself, “This should get me through the day without too many stares.”Most of my angst following training this morning had been washed away in the shower but despite my best efforts to convince myself otherwise, I wasn’t ready to brave the mess hall. So, I decided to head straig

*** Ariana's POVThe corridor outside Ariana’s room felt eerily silent as Cirian stopped at her door. For once, his expression was less predatory and more... calculated. His words during lunch still lingered in her mind, sharp and bitter as the wine she hadn’t touched. He tilted his head slightly, watching her as if trying to decipher her thoughts.“I trust you found the meal to your liking?” he asked smoothly, his tone deceptively casual.Ariana crossed her arms, leaning lightly against the doorframe. “It’s strange,” she said, forcing calm into her voice, “to have such a fine meal in a place that’s so drenched in blood.”Cirian smirked, unbothered. “Ah, but doesn’t blood fertilize the richest soil? Makes everything... thrive.” He stepped back, gesturing toward the door with a flourish. “Rest, my dear. Tonight promises to be enlightening.”Without waiting for her response, he turned and strode down the hall, leaving Ariana staring after him. Enlightening, he’d said. Everything with hi

*** Ariana’s POVThe hospital café feels incomplete, much like everything else around here. Half the walls are unpainted drywall, their seams taped but not yet sanded. A few tables are scattered around the space, mismatched chairs filling in the gaps. Exposed beams stretch across the ceiling, reminding me of how exposed I feel sitting across from Cirian. Cirian sits across from me at one of the few functional tables, his coffee steaming in his hands. The sharp scent of fresh paint and sawdust hangs faintly in the air, almost masking the herbal notes of my tea.A waiter sets down a small plate of biscuits between us, offering a polite nod before retreating to the far side of the café. We’re mostly alone here, the quiet punctuated only by the occasional sound of construction—hammering, a power drill whining, muffled voices echoing down the halls. The setting is intimate, leaving me nowhere to hide. I lift my tea to my lips, the heat brushing my face, and take a slow sip, buying myself

*** Ariana’s POVStepping out of the packhouse behind Cirian, I’m greeted by a crisp breeze that carries the sharp scent of pine. We must be farther north than Draven’s pack.Cirian glances back, his steps slowing. “Shall we?” he asks, extending a hand.I don’t take it, but I follow him. That’s answer enough.Despite my best intention to stay calm and civil, the cold bite in the air feels like an apt comparison to my mood.Waking up to Cirian sitting at the end of my bed and chit-chatting at me through the bathroom door while I was changing still has me off-kilter.Thank the Goddess I had swapped out the nightclothes Elara had chosen for me before going to bed.The ground crunches softly beneath our boots as we walk, the wide path leading deeper into the settlement. Ahead, buildings come into view—rows of them, neat but unpolished. Their wooden frames look sturdy, their construction deliberate. Wolves move between them, talking in quiet tones, some carrying supplies, others watching

*** Ariana’s POVElara’s words cling to the air, heavy and wrong, like the echo of a song sung off-key.“I can’t wait to see him again,” she says, her voice soft and distant. The smile on her lips is as fragile as the flame flickering in the hearth, but her eyes… her eyes are the real betrayal. There’s nothing behind them but static.I shift my weight, the creak of the wooden floor grounding me against the surreal tilt of the moment. “When was the last time you talked to James?” I ask, keeping my tone light, almost casual.Elara’s hands, busy smoothing invisible wrinkles from her dress, falter. She blinks, her expression flickering with something—confusion? Uncertainty? “Right before he left,” she says after a pause, the vagueness in her voice like a half-formed thought. The answer settles into my chest like ice water. There’s no time stamp on that comment, nothing specific to anchor it. I know James has been dead for over a month.“And Cirian,” I say slowly, tilting my head as if the

*** Ariana’s POVThe door clicks shut behind me, and I turn automatically, scanning for a lock. My fingers skim the edges of the wood, searching the smooth surface in vain. Nothing. Not even a latch to bar the door from the inside.I exhale in irritation, stepping back to take in the room, my gaze darting from the chest against the far wall to the chair near the fire. Both seem flimsy options to block the door, but I’m already calculating how much noise they’d make if someone tried to come in uninvited. At least I’d have a warning.Pivoting quickly, my breath catches—no, halts altogether. There’s someone sitting on the edge of the bed.“Elara?” I blurt, my voice sharp as I take a reflexive step back. “What the hell?”The woman perched before me doesn’t flinch, her head tilting slightly as if I were the intruder.“Miss Ariana,” she says softly, her lips curling into a small, fragile smile. It’s disarming, but only because it doesn’t erase the dark circles under her eyes or the hollows i

My fork hovers over the plate as I meet his gaze. “What?”His smile lingers for a moment, but there’s something wistful in his expression. “It was outside your pack’s border. I’d been tracking a rogue, hoping to bring him into my fold, but I lost him in the woods.”The fi

*** Ariana’s POVThe candlelight flickers softly across the table, its warm glow catching on the edges of the dark wood. The food smells incredible—roasted meat, buttery vegetables, and a faint hint of herbs I can’t place—but I can’t bring myself to eat.Cirian seems perfectly at ease, enjoying his stake like it’s Sunday dinner with the family. His glass of wine sits untouched beside him, though he glances at it occasionally as if debating whether to take a sip.“You’ve changed,” he says suddenly, breaking the silence.I glance up sharply, my fork still hovering over my plate. “Have I?”He smiles faintly, setting his knife down. “Yes. You carry yourself differently now—more confident. More… focused.”The compliment feels like a trap, and I carefully lower my fork back to the plate. “Life has a way of doing that to people.”
