Ava's POV
"YOU ARE THE BOSS OF YOUR WORLD." A quote from Jack Theodore said.
I had always used this quote as my motivational tool in whatever I did, treating everything like I was the boss. And no day went by without me saying my words of affirmation.
"I am the boss of my world. Rules would be made by me."
"I am the boss of my world. Everything goes the way I want."
"I am the boss of my world. Every plan is my strategy."
On this particular day, as I stepped out in my red Handkerchief Hem Dress and black heels, ready for work, I repeated the quote in my head.
As I entered into the horrific traffic of New York City, the quote stayed glued.
As I got out of my car and stepped into the parking lot of my tech company I made my way into the building with the quote still hanging.
And even as I looked up at the beautiful giant design that had the name of my company ‘Vance Tech’ atop the tall building, the quote stuck.
As I got past the lobby, responding to every bow from my workers and got on the elevator, the quote was still standing.
As I got off the elevator and into my office floor, the quote was still making me smile, proudly.
However, as my assistant, Camilla, showed me the new stock price of my company the moment I got to my office, all smiles disappeared and the quote got scraped out of my head.
WHAT THE FUCK?! Why is the stock price so low?!
“What happened Camilla?!” My quivering voice asked as I gaped at the decrease in my company's stock price in disbelief.
“I got to work to meet this too. It was a mass decrease. Zeke said it happened in a twinkling of an eye.”
I sighed and slammed my bag onto the mahogany desk in my enormous office that overlooked the busy city of New York.
Last year, our stock began to decrease. We began to have low sales and started falling behind the charts. We thought it was something we could fix, so we sold out most of our shares
But, the stocks didn't increase, instead, it got worse. There were even poor reviews from customers and our sales flunked more.
Nonetheless, there was a standstill in the decrease for a month now, though, there wasn't still any increase but, there was no decrease either and we thought we could finally mend the issue while the stock was stagnant.
But, hearing the news that our stocks got a mass decrease rendered the situation hopeless.
“Miss Brooks, there is something else you need to see.”
I veered my focus to Camilla who was extending a tab to me. I took the tab with a curious gaze and played the video on it.
My gaze widened as I watched the video playing on the tab. It was a video taken of me hitting a worker. Actually, not just a worker, a bitch.
“This went viral last night hence, the decrease in our stocks.”
“Who took the video?” I asked, my teeth gritted and my fist clenched that I feared my fingers could tear my flesh.
“We don't know yet.”
“Find the person who took the video through the surveillance camera.”
“Yes, ma'am.”
Camilla swept past me and walked out of my office. I gripped the tab and smashed it onto the tile floor of my office, shattering the gadget in pieces.
Someone definitely planned this. Someone planted that bitch, asked her to provoke me and took a video of me reacting.
****FLASHBACK****
Working hours were over, the workload today had worn me out and got me glued to my chair throughout my working hours. We were still finding ways to improve our stocks. We contacted rival companies but got no response. We presented proposals to different companies for a collaboration but we were forced to come up with a better one because it got rejected.
I pushed myself off my chair and gave my bones and muscles a long stretch before picking up my shoes from the floor, stuffing them into my bag and exiting my office.
Almost everyone had closed for the day because the floors were quiet and it was already getting dark.
However, a receptionist was still behind the front desk when I arrived at the lobby and I was about to tell her to close for the day but she was already approaching me with a paper cup of coffee.
“Miss Brooks. I see you are leaving work already.”
She smiled and extended the paper cup of coffee to me.
But as I was about to accept it, she tilted it a little bit and the whole content poured onto my hand, burning my skin.
A loud shriek escaped me and I groaned from the pain of the burn. I rubbed the spot where it had burnt smoothly until it became a little bit warm. And then, I realized that the bitch did not apologize.
I yanked my head up at her to see her smirking. She was smirking! Can you imagine that?!
“What the fuck? You ain't gonna apologize?”
But her smirk grew wider. “Serves you right. Why didn't you accept it properly? I gave you the coffee out of a good gesture and you just had to pridefully toss it aside. I guess they are right about your pride. It stinks.”
WHAT?! Was I hearing correctly?
I didn't know how it happened but I just found myself raising my hand and landing it sharp on her left cheek.
****PRESENT****
Camilla rushed into my office as I read through the reviews from the media. They were bad reviews. The worst we have ever had in the history of Vance Tech.
People were uninstalling our apps, saying they couldn't use the app of an ‘arrogant prideful bitch’.
Stocks were decreasing gradually and my patience was wearing out.
Who took the video? No one was there at that moment. Who uploaded the video? Was this really a set-up? I pondered, I was so worried.
“Did you find out who took the video?” I asked Camilla, without darting my gaze at her.
“No, but, I found something else. That girl never worked here. She works at The Notes Tech.”
There was a brief pause.
Wait, The Notes Tech? That was my brother’s tech company. Did he do this?
I didn't allow Camilla to finish her report before I jerked up and walked out of the office.
Ethan’s company was a rival company to mine, although mine was more prominent than his and this established his jealousy and hatred for me. Since then, he had been trying all his best to bring my company down instead of focusing on how he could grow his company.
One of his tactics to bring my company down finally worked for him. Hurray to him!
But, I wasn't going to let this go without a word of confrontation.
Ethan’s company is ten times smaller than mine. Though he tried to buy larger buildings for his company to prevent intimidation but his company sales couldn't sustain the lease of the building so he was forced to move out.
I walked into the building, deliberately clicking my heels on the tiled floor, loudly.
Despite his secretary telling me that he wasn't accepting any visitors at the moment, I let myself into his office.
Ethan was munching on protein bars, his legs crossed over the other on his table and watching a movie on his laptop. He didn't acknowledge my presence until I knocked on his office door.
“That was low even for you,” I said, faking a smile and rounding his desk. I found myself comfortable on his swivel chair and swirled it around. “So, how do you come up with those schemes in this little stuffy office of yours?”
He gave no response and pretended to still be interested in the movie he was watching. I knew the words I said had triggered him because he was gritting his teeth, his jaw sharp and strong.
Ethan was the only one out of us that was a perfect carbon copy of Dad. The rest of them were their mother and mine was my mom.
Yes, we were half-siblings. The same father and different mothers. They said my dad had an affair. They also said that my mother seduced my father. They called her a whore and every other name of a prostitute.
I wouldn't believe any of them, though. I believed everything were all lies, lies they had convinced themselves to believe. I couldn't believe anything that my family said. Every word their lips spoke were lies to me. From the moment they began to treat me like trash, all they said to my ears were nothing but lies.
“Ava, you keep forgetting your place, huh?” Ethan said, abandoning his movie and setting his full focus on me. “You are nothing without Dad’s support. For every good thing that's coming your way through that company, Dad is the mastermind. If not for Dad, people won't know you as CEO Ava, they would know you as Ava, the daughter of a harlot, the daughter of a whore. Because that's who you are.”
Every word they have always said, every ridicule this family had thrown at me, were like knives, piercing my heart and leaving deep cuts on it. Every single word they spoke about my mother and I, got to me and I took everything in like poison.
All the years of tagging me as the daughter of a prostitute, I had never learnt to get used to it. The words settled in and bruised me every time it slipped out of their mouth, it ate my inside up. They reminded me of Mom. They reminded me that she was six feet underneath right now. They reminded me that I lost the privilege to ever call anyone ‘mom’.
Just like now, tears stung the corner of my eyes, threatening to fall and bring my perfect make-up into ruins.
I got up and slowly strolled outside of his office, shutting the door behind me.
I know I shouldn't let myself down like this. No, I shouldn't. This company was the only thing keeping me on my feet among these people. If this company goes down, I would also go down and everything I had ever worked for would go down the drain.
The ridicule I got from this family would be ten times worse than what I would get if I failed.
I won’t let that happen.
I would do anything to save my company. Anything.
Ava's POVThe sweet fragrance of coffee beans filled the air in the cozy cafe I was seated in as I waited for my best friend, Melody, to finish ordering for both of us at the counter.Due to her event planning company and my job as the CEO of my company, we have both been too busy to see and spend time with each other recently.Melody finished ordering in a few minutes, came back to our booth, and placed two trays on the table. She ordered hamburgers, fries and cola for the both of us."Ava, can you believe these people don't have salad? I couldn't believe my ears. What kind of cafe doesn't have salad? I don't even know why you come here, my goodness!" Melody was exasperated and I chuckled humorously at her exaggerated reaction.I immediately dug into the fries and threw some in my mouth."But we have to admit they do make insane fries. It has this peculiar taste and it's so crispy." I replied to her little outburst.Melody shrugged, "Still doesn't justify their unprofessionalism.""M
Ava's POVI was still taken aback by the encounter with my stepmother, earlier. I thought this was hell but it was actually the deepest bottom pit of hell.Yeah, my birth did cause scandal for the family but I was still their child. Their freaking blood was running in my veins. A little bit of humanity should be in them!I thought it was only my step-brothers and sisters. I thought it was only my stepmother that hated me with such passion. But, my dad had unlocked a higher level of hatred for me, recently.I saw the contempt in his gaze. The regret in his looks. He didn't even try to hide it and he even dared to tell it to my face.Should I be surprised? No. It was now clear that no one in my family wanted my success. They wanted to see my defeat. They craved to see my defeat. And that, they won't see. I promise. I am going to give them the opposite of what they wanted to see. Why did I even consider Maggie’s offer? Was I crazy?Vance Tech would never go down like they wanted. I woul
Ava's POV"We shall get married," I heard Tom blurt out in a toneless voice and I couldn't believe my ears. For a moment I couldn't move or even blink and I held my breath as though something bad would happen if I let it out.Maybe, just maybe I was beginning to hear things because there was no way Tom said what I think I just heard."Err..mmm Mr Tom, I think I heard wrong," I said, slowly taking my gaze off his and shifting uncomfortably in my seat, "Please kindly repeat what you just said cause I think ...""Ava Brooks, we shall get married," he repeated himself, not letting me finish my sentence and smirked, "And it has to be soon."I abruptly stood up and started laughing. I know I shouldn't be laughing but at this moment that was what I felt like doing."Ava? Are you okay?" Tom asked as he walked closer to me."Ah yes! Of course, I'm okay," I stopped laughing and replied. Wearing a big smile on my face, I turned to look at him and asked, "You must be playing a prank on me right?"
Ava's POV"Crazy asshole!" I said to no one in particular as I stepped out of my car and made my way towards the office very early the next day. Ever since I stepped out of Crystal Hotel, I had been cursing and swearing.I got to my house very late last night because the traffic was heavy. And immediately I walked into my apartment, I just freshened up and slept off – I was too tired to do or think of anything.I had woken up to Camilla's call. She sounded very excited on the phone as she asked me about how the meeting with Tom went and well because I didn't want to ruin her excitement, I had told her that I would tell her all about it when I came to work.My heart was pounding as I walked towards my office, I wasn't mentally ready to face Camilla. How was I going to tell her and everyone else that the deal with Tom had failed? Or should I just marry the douchebag if that was the only thing he wanted?Goodness! I had no idea what to do. Someone send help! Please! I was gradually losin
Tom's POV“Wah dah …!” I expressed out loudly as the call ended. I had just finished speaking with my dad's lawyer on the phone and I could not control my rage.My dad died two months ago as a result of a tumour that started growing in his brain. I had taken him to see the best doctors but none of them could operate or do anything to save his life. Instead, they all just advised me to spend more time with him because he had very little time left to live.Unfortunately, he died in his sleep after about two weeks on a very sunny day and when I found out, I cried my eyes out.You expected me to be strong and not cry right? Well, he was my dad and I loved him so pardon me for crying. After his burial and everything, I was told by my dad's lawyer that his will be read a week later. I had no problem with it so I went about my usual activity as I waited for the one week to elapse. On the day that the will was to be read, I was very excited because I thought that I was about to get richer.Th
Ava's POVMaggie walked closer to my desk and stared at me for a while, "Oh honey, have you been starving? You look very pale like you could give up any minute."I scoffed and glared at her, "What do you want Maggie?""I heard the news Ava so I quickly came by to see how you are faring, you know I care about you," she said and winked at me."Since when did you start checking up on me?" I questioned her, giving her disgusting looks, "Or are you drunk?""Hey calm down honey, I didn't come here to be insulted so watch your tone," she warned and the smile on her face eventually disappeared."Then why are you here? I have work to do," I asked once again."Well I came by to remind you of my offer," she said, looking at her nails like there was something interesting on them, "It still stands and all you have to do is say yes and sign a few papers.""I have told you before Maggie that I am not interested in your ridiculous offer," I shot at her which made her look up at me in shock, "Get out
Ava's POVThe morning sunlight gently filtered into my room through the curtains as I lay in bed with my phone in my hand. I was reading a text from Melody which said, 'Hey girl we got to meet up, it's been a while.' I smiled as I read the text. Indeed it's been a while and I needed someone to talk to considering everything that has been going on in my life lately.I texted her back saying, 'I miss you girl, let's meet up for breakfast at the cafe.'After I hit the send button, I stretched and slowly got my tired self out of bed.I slept pretty late last night because I was up thinking about Mr Tom and his deal. I know I had accepted to do his bidding but whenever I thought about it, I got the chills. I was scared, scared that I was making the wrong decision."Well, I'm just doing this to save my company," I reminded myself and shook the thoughts off my mind. With a thin smile, I made my way to the bathroom and had a bath after which I slipped into a comfy yet stylish outfit, choosin
Tom's POV"I did it Henry!" I exclaimed excitedly as soon as Henry picked up my call, wearing a wide grin on my face. Anyone who saw me would think I just hit a jackpot and yeah well I just did."Sir? You did what? I am quite confused," Henry asked in a toneless voice that made me wonder if he was okay."Signed the deal dumbass," I replied and laughed."Seriously? Oh my!," He blurted, "I can't believe you got Ava to agree with you and sign those papers. I thought you were bluffing when you told me that she said yes to you.""I told you I was going to get what I wanted, " I boasted as a small grin appeared on my face, "I should fire you for not believing in me.""Sir?," He asked as though he didn't hear me.I scoffed and answered, "You heard me Henry.""I believe in you but Ava seemed like the kind of woman that …," he started to say but I cut him off."I got her now and that's all that matters," I beamed."Congratulations Sir. I am really happy for you, " he said and from the way he s
Tom's POVThe idea of getting married had always been daunting to me because it represented a lifelong commitment. It was not something I could easily walk away from, but the way she asked me about it gave me a sense of excitement. It made me feel like there was a lot to expect from her. After all, ever since our relationship began, we had been able to overcome many obstacles and challenges, which had only brought us closer than contract marriage partners typically would be."Alright, that's it. Well, since you guys need to come to a better and more sincere decision, I'll be on my way," Melody announced. She gave Ava a deep hug and left the restaurant. After staring at Melody for a long while, Ava's gaze returned to meet mine."I don't know about you, but I want to spend a lifetime with you. I can't imagine being with anyone else now. I don't want us to see where this goes, I want us to take us where it goes. And Chris won't have power over us anymore, because this time, we'll go thr
Tom's POVAva and I exchanged a fearful glance as terror gripped us.Had Chris heard or seen us approaching, or was he angry because I hadn't shown any fear when he talked about detaining Melody?Ava swallowed and took the first step. After three more steps, she broke into a run and smashed through the window. It was quite impressive how forceful she was. How on earth could a woman break through a window?I followed in her footsteps and saw a trail of blood coming from the hall.My eyes widened and immediately I tried to stop Ava from running headfirst into whatever was waiting for us, but she was too fast.As soon as she reached the end of the hall, she let out a scream and instinctively placed her hand on her chest before bolting into the living room.I followed her and found Chris on the floor, blood pouring from his leg.Melody still had her gun pointed at him, but Ava hugged her tightly as if she had been raised from the dead.Tears streamed down Melody's cheeks, but her grip on
Ava's POVChris had abducted Melody, there was no other way to put it, but I still clung to Tom because he was at his most vulnerable at that moment and wasn't ready to deal with anything else.As his tears continued to fall, I felt conflicted.I was afraid for Melody's safety in the hands of the reckless Chris, and afraid that if I interrupted this moment with Tom, I might never experience anything like it again.I held him closer, and for a moment he remained still. He rested in my embrace, perhaps reflecting on the painful memories he had been made to endure. We were there for about half an hour, and the entire time was filled with a sick feeling of worry for me.Finally, he pulled away from me and stood up."Wine for us? I believe we have no secrets now," he remarked, and I nodded with a faint smile. "Is something bothering you?" He asked, sitting down again."Are you feeling better now?" I asked, gently touching his tear-streaked face."I never thought I could cry, but you seem t
Ava's POV"Are you telling the truth? Will you really tell me everything, no matter what happens?" I asked. He was silent for a while but eventually spoke. "I will tell you everything, no matter what happens. I promise you, Ava.""Is that Tommy?" Dora suddenly asked, bursting into a high cackle."Oh, um, Tom. She's here. Dora is here," I said uncomfortably as she began to approach me."What?! Dora?? Where? Where are you, Ava?""We are in the parking lot," I replied immediately. "She told me she wants coffee, cigarettes, and her brother.""Take her to the closest coffee shop and get her whatever she wants. I'll be there soon," he told me before I ended the call."You want coffee right?" I asked her, my voice a bit shaky."I thought you weren't going to give me any," she raised a brow at me."I've changed my mind. Tom said to give you whatever you want.""Oh, my sweet Tommy. I always knew he still had feelings for me.""But what exactly happened between you two?" I quipped."He tried to
Tom's POVThe nurse explained to me how they had gone to Dora's room to offer her treatment, but found out that she wasn't there. They had tried calling Chris, but he was wanted so his phone was turned off. Then they had called me, but I had also been unreachable. When I had gone to visit her some days ago, I was asked to provide all of my contact numbers, so I included my office number as well and it turned out to be the only way for them to reach me now."Are there any CCTV cameras?" I inquired, and the nurse let out a sigh."The last time she was seen, she walked into the staff toilet and never came out. When it was checked again, it was discovered that she had stolen the clothes of a nurse and left her unconscious. At the time, no one suspected her, so she was able to run out," she explained, her voice trembling slightly."So?" I asked."We think she might go to visit any of her relatives. Maybe you or her brother," she finished, and I licked my lips."It's fine. If she comes to s
Ava's POVI was about to open my room door, but then I remembered that Chris had made me lock it from the inside. I realized that I would probably have to find another room to sleep in. I quickly went into the room next to mine and slammed the door in anger. Then I flopped down on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. It was so frustrating that he didn't feel ready to tell me anything about Dora. He wasn't prepared to narrate the whole thing to me, leaving me in the dark. The fact that I had trusted and loved him blindly brought tears to my eyes. How could you tell someone you loved them and still refuse to let them know all there was to you?I hated secrets. I hated liars, and I hated deceivers!!With that thought, I found myself drifting off to sleep. The night I had had indeed been an eventful one, full of fear and anxiety.*************The next morning, I woke up at dawn, took a shower, looked through the wardrobe for clothes set aside for unexpected guests, and chose an outfit.
Ava's POVI was dumbstruck; I mean completely speechless."Wait, isn't that Tom's wife? The new girl he loves?" She started to shout. "Ha, she's not as pretty as we thought." She then paused and looked around. "Hey guys, why were we scared? Obviously, it's because we didn't expect a stranger. I can't believe he ended up saving her after all. If it weren't for us, she would have lost her fingers. Why did you even tell him the location? You should have just let her hands rot. She doesn't need them."The way she spoke to herself was unnerving. Suddenly, she began to laugh like a maniac, and I found myself breathing faster out of fear of what she might do."Does Tom think he'll lead a good life after ending mine? No!! I'll make him miserable too. I'll make him share my hospital room and laugh with me, too!" she promised as she ran her hands over her bed.I stumbled back a few steps.."He… he made you like this?" I asked in a shaky voice. In a fit of bubbling rage, she angrily demanded, "A
Ava's POVI gasped, and my phone slipped from my grasp."Raise them. Those hands," he said slowly, and my hands shot up to the ceiling immediately. "Good. Now, any little, stupid sound that I don't approve of, and I'll blast your head," he threatened softly, causing my eyes to close tightly. He was dressed entirely in black, with a black cap covering his head.He then moved closer to me; even with my eyes closed, I could feel his presence growing stronger. My limbs trembled, and it seemed like I would collapse any moment. "You need to lock the door," he whispered into my ear, his voice dangerously close, as he pressed the gun against the back of my neck.My legs sprang into action instantly, a little too fast."I'm not trying to run away. I'm not," I assured him in a wavering voice as I proceeded to lock my door. With the tip of the gun in his hands, he forcefully pushed me to the bed while he leaned against the nightstand, carefully observing me."You must think you've won. Everythi
Tom's POVMr. Roger looked nervous as he had finally confessed their greed, and as he met my expressionless eyes, it seemed he understood the gravity of what he had done."That's why they were so adamant," he explained, his eyes darting from Henry to me. "I actually wanted to pull out, but I had already used the money for my wife's surgery, and there wasn't really any way of getting it back." He moistened his lips nervously as he spoke."So are you saying that he successfully bribed the entire board too?" Henry asked.Mr. Roger shook his head. "No. A few persons rejected the money because they wanted to stick with Mrs. Lockwood. And I really wanted to, but I …""I can imagine the others saying exactly what you're saying - making excuses. But excuses don't cover up what you've done. Mrs. Lockwood will be the one to decide whether or not to expose you," I announced, noticing fear crossing his eyes."I… I know what I did was wrong…," he stuttered, avoiding my gaze.**************Ava wen
