Jenna’s P.O.V.
“Hey, Jenna! To what do I owe the pleasure of this call so early in the morning? Did you discover a secret treasure map or find a talking parrot down by that cute little harbor in that even cuter Hallmark town of yours?” I chuckled at Jules’ words, feeling the tension in my shoulders ease already.
“If only my life was that exciting! I’ve just had a mind-boggling conversation with the lawyer handling my Uncle Ben’s will. You won’t believe what he just told me.” I sighed, stepping inside the hotel and walking straight towards the elevators that would take me to the right floor.
“Do tell, my friend! I’m all ears and ready for the grand reveal.” Jules answered me, and by the way her voice was sounding, I could have sworn she was eating something at the other end of the phone.
“Well. He basically left me everything he owned. His house, but also his construction business. And it even turns out that my dear uncle wanted to play a final prank on me from beyond the grave, since he left me with the daunting task of working with ‘he who shall not be named’. Yes, you heard that right.” I groaned, waiting for the elevator doors to finally open up.
Jules burst into laughter on the other end of the phone. I just gave her some time to stop laughing, as finally the doors of the elevator opened and I stepped inside, pushing the button and hoping the doors would close before anyone else would be able to step inside with me.
“Are you serious right now, Jenna? Did your uncle suddenly decide to infuse some Harry Potter drama into your life? Who on earth is ‘he who shall not be named’? Is he a secret wizard or a mythical creature?” Jules asked me, clearly crunching on something now.
“What the hell are you eating?” I asked her out loud, sighing in relief as the doors closed and nobody else had stepped into the elevator with me.
“Froot loops.” She stated matter-of-factly.
“What are we? Five?” I asked her, hearing her giggle on the other side.
“It does tend to keep me young, so whatever works, I guess. Now, do tell me, who are we really talking about here?” Jules asked me, to which I groaned and leaned my back against the wall.
“Adam freaking Miller.” I sighed.
“Oh, shit. Wasn’t he the guy who…”
“YES!” I groaned, lying my hand over my face to hide my own embarrassment for the outside world.
“Oh, shit… that’s messed up, Jenna. I mean, how could he even be alive? Didn’t we set his voodoo doll on fire in college at some point in time?” Jules asked me, to which I couldn’t help but giggle, because it was actually true. I guess I found out the hard way that that crap doesn’t work for me either.
Well…
at least I tried…
“Well… didn’t your new year start off with a bang then.” Jules sighed as if she couldn’t believe what she had just heard.
“Yeah, happy new year to you too, Jules.” I smiled, even though the happiness didn’t quite reach my heart because I missed my dear friend and I would have wanted nothing more but for her to be here with me. Even though she had insisted on coming with me, we both knew her job would have never allowed her to come with me.
“Happy New Year, Jenna. I do have to say, I miss my partner in crime.” Jules answered me, followed by more crunching sounds.
“I miss you too. How did you spend New Year’s Eve?” I asked Jules, who hummed at the other end of the phone.
“We went to Club Twilight, and I ended up spending January first in a handsome officer’s bed instead of his jail cell.” Jules giggled, to which I rolled my eyes because even though Jules had a heart of gold, this was her way of life basically. I guess where I ran away from things, Jules ran straight toward them, especially if it meant into the arms of a handsome man.
“Please tell me you were safe, at least?” I groaned, hearing her giggle again.
“Always. I might be adventurous, but I’m not stupid. And I definitely don’t want to end up pregnant.” She told me, to which I nodded, grateful that at least she was being safe.
“So, how did you spend New Year’s Eve?” Jules asked me, to which I sighed deeply, thinking back at the events of that night.
“I met up with my High School friend, Renee. She still lives down here.” I stated, and I could basically feel Jules nod her head at me without saying a word, because I knew her that well.
“She asked me to come to celebrate with her at some local bar, it was fun, I guess. Apart from one thing.” I shrugged, as suddenly the crunching sounds on the other end of the phone stopped.
“OK, who was the guy, what did he look like, and what did you do to him?” Jules asked me, clearly already reading me like a book.
“You wouldn’t even believe me if I told you.” I swallowed, finally making it back to my hotel room and opening the door as soon as I had placed my keycard on the door and the light flickered green.
“Oh, tell me. Now I’m really curious.” Jules stated, to which I rolled my eyes.
“None other than Adam Miller himself,” I stated, hearing Jules gasp.
“No freaking way!” Jules giggled while I nodded.
“Yes freaking way.” I sighed deeply.
“What did you do? Spill the beans girl! Now I need to change my Froot Loops for some popcorn, hang on girl!” She begged me, to which I giggled now, feeling content with myself and the way I had handled that situation.
“I threw my wine in his face when he wanted to kiss me.” I laughed, which was quickly followed by Jules’ own hysterical laughter as well.
“OK, now you have to tell me everything. Every little dirty detail, PLEASE!” And I sighed, thinking back at two nights ago.
New Year’s Eve
I stared at myself in the hotel room mirror, my fingers fumbling nervously with my top. I had planned on spending New Year’s Eve in the comfort of my hotel room, far away from the memories and faces of Fairview. But when I had gone grocery shopping, or do I need to say wine shopping because I wanted to spend New Year’s Eve in a hot bath with a wine in hand? Instead, I had run into Renee, my old high school friend, who seemed to have other ideas for both of us. Forcing me to follow her along just like in high school all those years ago.
“Come on, Jenna!” Renee’s voice echoed from the other side of the door.
“We’ve got to ring in the new year in style! Fairview has changed, I promise.” Her voice tried to shush me, but I rolled my eyes, hardly believing that to be true. But after giving myself one last critical look, I opened the door and was met with Renee’s infectious smile and sparkling eyes. She was dressed in a red dress, exuding confidence and excitement. Both things she already had back in high school as the captain for the girls’ soccer team, things I had lacked back then. Hell… I still lacked them right now.
“I still can’t believe you talked me into going out,” I grumbled, stepping out into my room and following her into the hallway as I tucked away my hotel room key in my small purse.
Renee looped her arm through mine and leaned in conspiratorially.
“Trust me, you won’t regret it. Fairview is not the same place it used to be when we were teenagers. Things have really changed, for the better, I swear.” And even though Renee’s words sounded sweet and honest, I also understood that in contrast to myself, Renee had never left Fairview once, so really… how could she even compare a small town to a big city? But also, just like in old times, Renee just had her ways of persuading me into making me do whatever she wanted.
As we made our way toward the bar that Renee had told me we would head over to, my apprehension grew. Fairview had been the site of my darkest memories, where the torment of my high school years had left scars I thought would never fade away. The thought of facing the people who had made my life miserable, sent shivers down my spine.
Entering the bar about half an hour later, I noticed a different atmosphere than the one I remembered. The dimly lit room was adorned with cheerful New Year’s decorations, and the air buzzed with anticipation. The sound of laughter and clinking glasses filled the space, drowning out my memories, if only temporarily.
Renee guided me to a high table near the window, strategically positioned to offer a view of the lively crowd inside. We settled into our seats as a waiter approached, ready to take our orders.
“So, how did this place change, Renee?” I asked her after we ordered our drinks, my voice laced with skepticism. Renee’s gaze softened as she studied me.
“OK. You remember Todd, right?” Renee said, her eyes dancing with mischief. And I burst out into laughter, almost spilling my wine in the process since that was the time when the waiter came back with our drinks.
“Oh, how could I forget? The self-proclaimed king of Fairview High!” We exchanged knowing glances, recalling Todd’s arrogance and his constant need to assert his dominance over others. But time had a funny way of leveling the playing field.
“He tried to start his own business after graduation, didn’t even mind to go to college.” Renee said, barely able to contain her own amusement. And I raised an eyebrow, my interest piqued.
“Do tell.” I smiled as Renee leaned in, her voice dripping with dramatic flair.
“Well, turns out his brilliant idea was to open an antique store.”
I couldn’t help but burst into another fit of laughter. Trying to get a mental picture of Todd selling antiques.Nope… not possible.
“An antique store? The guy was as high-tech as could be. And he didn’t have one friendly bone in his body. How on earth would he ever communicate with his customers?” I laughed, shaking my head in awe, to which Renee nodded, agreeing with me.
“Oh, but it gets better! Apparently, his grand opening was a complete flop. Nobody even showed up, since he never really made any friends around here by always acting like a dick to everyone in high school. The next thing I heard, the shop was closed up and Todd was off, by the sounds of it, he now lives in Alaska, working for some fishing company. Too ashamed to show his face here ever again.”
I doubled over in laughter, clutching my stomach. Somehow the image of awful Todd’s failed business and him now fishing was too hilarious to resist. By the sounds of it, Karma had done a job well done right there.
“Also remember Rachel?” Renee asked me, to which I rolled my eyes. Rachel, Miss Perfect, head cheerleader, and bully number one to me.
“Of course,” I mumbled. Rachel had been the epitome of popularity, and her disdain for anyone who didn’t fit into her definition of ‘cool’, was unmatched.
“Well, get this,” Renee began, her voice filled with glee.
“After you left town, Rachel’s life took an unexpected turn. Karma had something special in store for her.” I leaned in, my excitement growing.
“What happened?” I asked as Renee leaned back, savoring the moment before continuing.
“So, you know how Rachel always dreamed of becoming a famous actress?” My eyebrows shot up in surprise. Rachel’s aspirations had been the talk of the school, as she often boasted about her so-called acting talent.
“Well,” Renee continued
“She did manage to land a role in a production. But here’s the catch, she ended up playing the role of a talking tree!” I couldn’t help but snort, my mind conjuring up images of perfect Rachel, dressed in a leafy costume. It was a far cry from the glamorous acting career she probably had envisioned for herself getting leading role after leading role.
“But wait, it gets even better. During one of the shows, a gust of wind blew through the theater, knocking Rachel off balance and causing her to stumble right off the stage!” And now, I had to clutch my sides, tears streaming down my face from the sheer hilarity of the whole situation I wished I could have seen with my own eyes.
“After that, she decided to pursue other career options, but luck wasn’t on her side. She tried her hand at starting a fashion blog, but her fashion choices were, well… let’s just say ‘questionable’ and way overpriced.” I sighed deeply, still chuckling as I shook my head.
“I can only imagine.”
“So now, Rachel’s life mission is to tend to her sugar daddy who lives in Texas.” Renee shrugged, to which I gasped.
“Seriously?” I asked her, to which Renee nodded.
“Seriously. But you know what?” Renee said,
“As much as we can laugh at their misfortunes, I think Rachel and Todd’s journey serves as a reminder that we all have our struggles and that life has a way of humbling even the most arrogant ones among us.” And I nodded, my laughter subsiding as I reflected on Renee’s words.
“I guess we all have our struggles at some point in time.” I sighed deeply, seeing how Renee leaned over to grab my hand and give it a gentle squeeze.
“We might have struggled in high school, but look at us now. I mean… look at you, you’re a bombshell, Jenna Anderson!” She winked at me.
“You grew into a gorgeous, independent woman, my friend. And I am proud of you for doing so.” She added, making my cheeks flush
“Independent, yes. Gorgeous, not so much.” I laughed at Renee even though her words warmed my heart, seeing her eyebrows rise all the way up her head as if somehow, she didn’t believe what she was hearing right now.
“Well, if I have to ask any single man around here, I think they would all agree with me, especially that one standing right there as if he got just struck by lightning,” Renee spoke, her eyes looking over somewhere behind my right shoulder, and so, I turned to look at what she was seeing. And my breath got caught in my throat, as I made eye contact with none other than Adam freaking Miller.
Shit…
Jenna’s P.O.V. on New Year’s Eve.Adam was standing at the bar, his brown hair looking tousled and sexy, and a slight stubble adorning his jawline. Memories flooded back immediately, reminding me of the massive crush I had harbored throughout high school for this guy. He had been my unrequited love, the boy who unknowingly had held my heart in his hands. Until the day when he had broken it completely, and my love for him had slowly transformed into hate.At least... that was what I was trying to convince myself of, still. Because of the way that my heart had skipped a beat when I had seen him again after twelve years... that most definitely wasn't hate that I felt just now. Hate doesn't make you want to crawl on top of the table and scream 'Just take me, I'm yours'... “Jenna, is everything OK?” Renee asked me, probably feeling my sudden change in demeanor as she followed my gaze. My eyes stayed locked with Adam’s brown ones across the crowded room.“It’s Adam Miller, Renee…” I gasped
Seeing Adam once again after twelve years, I still found it hard to believe that he still looked like a real-life model. And I felt my body once again heating up with old flames I knew only he would be able to extinguish. And it wasn’t just his broad shoulders or the dimple on his right cheek when he grinned playfully, it wasn’t the way he smelled of cologne mixed with his personal male scent. For me, it was his eyes. It had always been his eyes. The way they seemed to stare into my soul, those deep dark browns. And as I now looked up and looked into them again, they were just as transfixing as all those years ago.Yup, I’m done foronce again…Darn, you, Jenna! What is it with this man that you can’t seem to shake off?“You know, Jenna. If you were a vegetable, you’d be a cute cumber.” Adam told me with a mischievous smile.“Really
Jenna’s P.O.V. in 2010“Are you ready?” Renee asked me, to which I groaned.“I can’t believe you made me come here in the first place.” I sighed, looking out of my car to the house where the party was being held. A party that the popular cheerleader Rachel had organized. Sure, it had just been the news that had spread through the entire school, basically telling everyone to come, I just knew that once Rachel would see me in person, she would kick me out of her house. The girl was awful and a bully. I hadn’t even wanted to come here, that was until Renee had begged me to come along with her, and since I still owed her one, here I was, forced to go to a party I didn’t want to attend in the first place.“It will be fine. Besides, every handsome boy will be here.” She grinned widely at me.“Handsome boys that don’t even talk to us.” I threw back at her. To which Renee
Jenna’s P.O.V. in 2010“I’ve seen him around in school.” I nodded in response because I had. I just didn’t get the goosebumps and fluttering butterflies in my stomach like I would get from Adam.“He’s an asshole though. He has his whole life figured out for him already.” Adam told me, a bit of anger in his voice as he spoke about his younger brother.“While I don’t even know what to do with my life. I mean, if I don’t get a scholarship to play rugby somewhere, I wouldn’t know what to do with my life, honestly. I mean, my backup plan is to join the army, but my mom doesn’t want to hear about any of that. But I mean… you know moms.” He laughed, to which I pressed my lips into a thin line. No… I don’tI don’t know ‘moms’Mine left me at the front door of my uncle’s house
Adam’s P.O.V.Shit…That had been the initial thought that went through my head. But let’s step back a couple of minutes. My day had initially gone by pretty normal as of yet. Christmas break was over and we were stepping back into reality, which consisted of me working during the day and playing dad once the High school alarm would signal the end of my working day. And today, the first day back in school after Christmas break, we were all -teachers and students- expected to gather in the school’s auditorium for the principal’s New Year’s speech. I had been patiently awaiting the principal’s speech about the school’s upcoming projects this year. But once the man had started to speak, my mind started to wander, still being captivated by blurry memories of the gorgeous woman I had met at the New Year’s Eve party. Still trying to wrap my mind around the ‘why’ I had ended up with wine in my
“Thank you all, for the warm welcome,” Jenna began to speak, her voice clear and confident and sweet and a whole lot of sexy… God, I wanted to hear her say my name, no scratch that, I wanted to hear her moan my name.“I am very excited to be a part of this project and to bring a new vision to the construction of the school’s library. Together, we will create a space that fosters creativity, knowledge, and community.” She spoke, having the attention of everyone in the room. God… she would have been an amazing teacher herself. She sure as shit had my full attention when she spoke. This was also why, as soon as the principal ended his list of things to talk about and told the students to get back to their classes immediately, I found myself drifting over towards her, Agatha’s words still fresh in my mind and my wolf Canin begging me to talk to her and mark her.“Jenna,” I called out her name out l
Jenna’s P.O.V.Why am I doing this? Why do I keep tormenting myself like this? Why on earth can’t I say no to the man?I sighed deeply, walking out of the school building after my sit down with the principal before the alarm would signal the end of the school day. I still had a couple of minutes to collect myself and prepare myself for something I had believed to never happen in my life. Go on a date with Adam freaking Miller… sort of date, at least.I walked down the street in the direction of Marley’s, Fairview’s very own very small coffee shop. My heart pounding in my chest with every step that I took closer to the place. I couldn’t ignore the nerves soaring through my body right now. Meeting up with Adam for coffee was a step I had taken with a specific purpose in mind, which was to finally let go of my lingering crush and move on from that man.
“So… you do the school’s library, and then you’re gone again?” He asked me, looking back up into my eyes, taking my breath away with the intensity in his dark eyes.“I don’t know yet,” I admitted as I shook my head, seeing Adam swallow as his Adam’s apple bobbed. God… I wanted to lick up his throat. No!Stop it, Jenna,Bad Jenna!“Do you still play rugby these days?” I asked him, trying to steer clear of the subject of my future or my thoughts of licking him. Adam instead shook his head, pressing his lips into a thin line.“Nah, I coach the team now,” He answered me, making me smile.“You were always a good leader,” I told him, seeing his eyebrows rise up playfully.“So you do remember me from back in High school?” He asked me, sounding flattered by that knowledge.“
“How is your uncle’s house going?” Koda asked me, walking toward a cooler and grabbing a can of soda for himself. And I took a mental note that since Adam had just installed the refrigerator, I guess we could start loading the fridge in as well, once the boxes were all emptied out.“Good. It’s actually done.” I smiled, referring to my late uncle Ben’s house. I had taken some time to think about my options on what to do with the house that I had grown up in. But once the decision had been made, I had been over the moon and unstoppable.“And we also named it.” I smiled, seeing how Koda’s eyebrows rose up, making him look just like Adam.“I named it ‘Uncle Ben’s Inn’, in his memory.” I smiled, thinking back at the way my uncle’s old house had once looked back in the day, and how I had transformed it into a small bed and breakfast.
Jenna's P.O.V.6 months laterThe sun streamed through the big windows of the kitchen, overlooking the backyard and the woods in the distance, casting a warm glow across the hardwood floors of Gran’s old house, or as we now said; our house. It was a bittersweet morning, one that marked the ending of one chapter, and the beginning of a whole new chapter in Adam’s and my life. Today was official moving day, and we were finally ready to call this place our home.Months of hard work had gone into the remodeling of Gran’s house. Together with Anderson’s Construction, Adam and I had gone into the remodeling of Gran’s house. Together, we had transformed the old, creaky place into a cozy haven of our liking. It was our labor of love, a testament to our commitment to each other, and to the new life we were building together.I walked into the kitchen, savoring the scent of fresh paint and the p
Jenna’s P.O.V.I blinked, waking up and feeling disoriented for a moment because somehow my brain for a second still thought that I was back in Chicago in Jules’ apartment. But as my consciousness slowly returned, I became acutely aware of a new sensation souring through me, bringing me right back into Fairview, into Adam's room.I somehow felt different waking up, but it wasn’t the kind of different that would send alarm bells ringing. It was a good kind of different, a sense of profound calm and security I had never experienced before. The memories of the previous night flooded my mind, the raw intensity of Adam’s mark, and his declaration of claiming me as his mate, forever. The connection we shared had always been undeniable, but somehow seemed nothing compared to what I was feeling for the man right now. I could feel his energy, his warmth, like a warm undercurrent in my veins before I had even touched him or
Adam’s P.O.V.Fuck, if my little mate was about to keep this up, I would blow my load like a fifteen-year-old looking into his first Playboy magazine. My eyes rolled back all the way to where they could probably see my own brains, feeling her bare for the very first time. The tight clench of her pussy, her wetness, fuck… I could even sense my precum marking her already, my scent nesting inside of her. My fucking canines were already coming out and I was only just inside of her.My hips had found a glorious rhythm of rocking in and out of her. The wet sounds of our fucking, the cracking of the bed on the wooden floors, the sweet sounds she was making as I hit her G-spot stroke after delicious stroke, it was all too much for me right now.“Where do you want me to bite you, baby?” I panted, knowing that right now, I wasn’t able to hold on for much longer.
Jenna’s P.O.V.Damn, this man is good, better than good.Hell, does the right word even exist? No… I honestly don’t think so.He slowly climbed over my body, his lips crashing against mine. The weight of his body on mine, the warmth of his skin pressing on me was almost enough to send me over the edge once more. My hands ran down his cheeks as I stopped him for one moment, long enough to look into his eyes.“I want you to mark me,” I told him, letting him know about the final decision that I had made about my future before I got on the plane back to Fairview. Yes, this had been my decision and mine alone. I wanted to be with Adam, that much was true, but I wanted to be with him in every way human or supernaturally possible. I wanted every part of him. And I wanted to be his just as badly as I wanted him to be mine.
Adam’s P.O.V.I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm myself and my wolf. I couldn’t help the grin that almost split my face in half, and how my heart skipped a beat and then started to pound like a wild horse. It really felt as if Jenna coming back to Fairview had also brought me back to life after being dead for a week straight. Fuck, I loved this woman with my whole being. And now, I knew for a fact that that was never going to change because she had just told me that she was going to stay right here, with me.When I had seen her sitting on my front porch, I had wanted to race to her immediately. I had wanted nothing more but to scoop her up into my arms, carry her inside the house, and lock the door behind me so she wouldn’t be able to run away from me anymore. But I hadn’t acted on my own selfish feelings or those of my wolf, since at that point I hadn’t realized why she had returned just yet. I mea
I took a deep breath, my questions all coming in a rush now that I knew I was able to ask them.“What does it even mean to be a werewolf? How does it affect you, and your family? How does it affect our relationship?” Adam leaned back, his expression thoughtful as he considered how to explain.“Being a wolf means that we have the ability to transform into wolves whenever we want to. It’s a part of our family history, a secret we have kept to protect those that we care about.”“How does it affect our relationship?” I asked him as he smiled at me. A warm smile filled with love.“In my world, every wolf has one true mate, sort of a soulmate. Wolves are extremely loyal creatures, they find their partner and they stay together for life. It means that no matter what happens, I will always find my way back to you, Gorgeous. Because you are my one true mate. Or as wolves say, you are mine. That
Jenna’s P.O.V.I had just revealed my decision to Adam, as we were sitting on the sofa inside the living room of his family’s house, strangled in each other's arms. I watched his expression closely, anticipation gnawing at me as I waited for his response to me telling him that we had bought his grandmother’s house and that I had done it without his permission. Adam’s eyes widened in surprise, as he stared at me in disbelief.“You… you did what?” She stammered, clearly taken aback by my revelation. I nodded, my heart pounding with nervous excitement, hoping to God that I had made the right choice by doing this as a gift to him.God…Please don’t let him get mad over this…“I know how much that house means to you, Adam,” I explained, reminding him of the conversations we had had about the place. Hell… I could still see t
“I have been searching for you all afternoon,” I confessed to her, my eyes locking onto hers. Jenna’s expression softened at my statement, and surprisingly, she reached out and touched my hand as if she wanted to apologize that I hadn’t been able to find her any sooner.“I’m sorry,” she told me before she swallowed deeply.“I was at Anderson’s Construction almost the entire afternoon for an emergency meeting with the staff.” She added before she looked away from me again. Which made a lump form in my throat that I absolutely hated, because what on earth could be so bad that she needed to look away from me when she would tell me this?“I…” She sighed, pressing her lips into a thin line, while I braced myself for impact.“I decided to sell my uncle’s company.” She nodded, and my heart sank at her words. This was exactly
