After cashing in my payslip at the bank, I rode my bike home with the cool spring breeze flowing through my hair. Trying to blank out how nervous I had been last night, I tried to fixate my thoughts on what I wanted to do when summer came. Maybe go hiking or camping out in the hills, stay in one of the huts by the beach. I didn’t care what I did, as long as I was out of the house for part of it.
My parents were just as distant this morning as we ate breakfast around the table in silence. I felt even more suspicious of my dad. All morning he kept dropping things, looking flustered and on edge… What is he up to? I kept thinking and I felt irritated at the fact that I knew he was hiding something, whether my mum knew or not, I wanted to know!
I leaned my bike outside the front porch and as I walked into the house, it was just as quiet as it had been when I left. I decided to poke my head round the door to the living room, but what I saw, left me rooted to the spot as the hairs on my skin stood on end.
Two tall men, dressed in black, were standing in front of my parents and, with just one look at them, I knew they were vampires.
It’s happening! I thought. They’ve finally come for us! My mum was stood with her arms wrapped around herself, trembling like she was covered in ice, the fear on her face was as clear as a blue sky and my dad was stood with his eyes focused on the floor, his hands in his pockets, like he was already willing to submit.
“This is her?” One of the men spoke in a firm, deep voice.
“Yes”. My dad whispered in reply as he nodded, still not making eye contact with anyone in the room.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t mean….” I began to plead.
“Then you know what happens now!” The man directed at my dad and again he just nodded in reply.
“What happened? What do you want with us?” My mother asked as her voice shook.
“We’re only here for her”. He replied as he looked at me and a cold shiver went through my body.
“Me… why me?” I asked nervously, knowing that my parents were going to find out I had been in contact with another vampire… and instead of hearing it from me, they’d hear it from two random strangers.
“We were told to take you with us until Zekan is paid what is owed to him.”
“Owed?” I asked in puzzlement as my mind took a double take of what he said. “We don’t owe anything to…. Whoever you just said, you’re mistaken!”
The man smirked then looked from me to my dad. “Oh! She doesn’t know? How interesting!”
My mum stepped toward them and loosened her arms, looking as confused as I was. “Doesn’t know what? What the hell is going on?”
“Ahh the wife doesn’t know either! Well, your husband here owes Zekan, the son of the lord, a great sum of money…. And it’s not the first time. So, until payment is made in full, we take, shall we say…. A token! Just something to make sure Zekan gets his money!”
My mum gasped as she looked furiously at my dad. “What have you done John? You promised me after the last time, you wouldn’t go there again!”
My dad didn’t reply, he just stood there, still looking at the floor.
“Now they’re going to take OUR DAUGHTER?”
“Wait!” I interjected. “You’re…. you’re taking me because my dad owes you money?”
“Yes, we have been ordered to come and collect you in its place…. Temporarily, until he can bring the money!”
“Take me!” My mum screeched. “Take me instead!..... please don’t take my daughter, take me!”
“NO!” The man replied. “We were told specifically, we come for the girl. There will be no negotiations. The money or the girl!”
“JOHN”, My mum shouted. “DO YOU HAVE THE MONEY?”
“No”. He replied quietly.
“YOU BASTARD!..... YOU PROMISED YOU’D STOP!” She screamed as she ran over to him and started hitting him all over his arms and his chest.
“ENOUGH” The man yelled and immediately my mum stopped as she panted for breath, her face torn in anger.
The man looked at me, seemingly losing his patience. “Collect some of your things, we’re leaving now!”
“Where?.... Where are you taking me?”
“To our home”
I could have sworn my heart stopped beating for a second as he said those words. They were taking me to where all the vampires lived, which we always called 'the vampire nest'.
“NOW!” He demanded and I jumped in fear. I nodded and was just about to leave the room, when he yelled out to me again, in a deep, threatening voice. “And don’t even think about sneaking out of any of the windows, rest assured we will find you!”
I got into my room and grabbed my big black rucksack out of my closet, and I don't know how my body was able to move and my hands were actively picking things out of my drawers, because I didn’t feel aware of anything I was doing. My eyes were glazed over as tears glossed over them and I couldn’t see what I was packing or make any sense of what I actually needed to pack, my body was just moving to places and my hands were chucking things in the bag. I just…. I just couldn’t grasp what was happening right now! Is this real? Am I really going to that place? What the fuck is happening? What the fuck am I going to do? I’m a dead girl!
The only thing I took notice of was the framed picture of me and my parents together. We had taken it two years ago when we went to the beach. I put it in my bag and zipped it up, tossing it over my shoulder, my legs shook as I walked back down the stairs, feeling as if I was walking to my doom, like I was signing off the last day of my life,, my short twenty-year life.
My mum was sobbing hard when I walked back into the room and both of the men came toward me. “Let’s go”. The man said sternly.
“Wait!” I spoke as I looked at my mum, who’s face was streamed with tears. I ran over to her and wrapped my arms around her, she held me tightly and I whispered in her ear. “I’ll be ok mum. I love you”.
“I love you”. She whispered back as she sniffled, and I could feel her chest heaving as she cried, and I tried to soak in as much of her hug as I could before I finally loosened my arms. Mum gripped hold of me, refusing to let me go as her cries turned into heaved sobs. I could hear a low rumble from one of the guys behind me, growling as if to hurry me along. I took hold of her arms and unwrapped them from my back and wiped away her floods of tears.
I looked at my dad who now had his back to us all. If he can’t even look at me, then I won’t look at him. I thought. I still didn’t quite understand what was happening here and why I was suddenly being taken away by a kind that we had always steered clear of… or at least tried to, in my case.
The man took hold of my arm as we walked to the back doors and opened them. He pulled me onto his back and as I looked back at my mum, I had one last glance until her face was gone from my view in an instant. I could feel the man leap over the fences as I held onto his shoulders for dear life. Flashes of houses past by to suddenly be replaced by trees and the sound of twigs and grass being stood on.
I knew then, I was no longer in Blue Bay town as we plunged deeper into the forest at full speed. I hid my face behind his shoulder to keep it out of the gusts of wind and to try and remember to breath as I felt my nerves sparking with fear, sprouting like fireworks. I felt as if my whole body was in overdrive, and it was only a matter of time until it shut down just from pure terror. My eyes kept hazing over and my head spun, with an overwhelming feeling like I was sure to pass out.
My hands were almost numb from all the cold wind, and it wasn’t exactly like I was getting any body heat from the guy I was clutched to. They both started to slow down and came to a stop. The man took my arm and helped me off his back. As soon as my feet hit the stony ground, my eyes widened at the sight in front of me. “Where are we?” I whispered in surprise.
“Our home”. The other man replied bluntly.
My mouth was agape as I looked at it in awe. It wasn’t some hole in the ground or a cold, damp cave like I had at times imagined. It was the most magnificent, towering castle I had ever seen… I mean I only ever saw pictures of castles in children’s books and even they looked incredible, but nothing at all on this scale. It was too dark to see it properly, but I could just about make out the pointy tip on one of the tower roofs and I had to crank my neck back to see it.
Both of the men motioned for me to follow as we walked up wide, concrete steps that led to two huge, heavy wooden doors with brass and gold intertwined within the woodwork.
They pushed one of the doors open and waited for me to step inside and once again the view was breath-taking. The room was wide and long, the size of at least three houses each length, with white and gold marble pillars along the walls. Two glistening chandeliers hung from the high ceiling and a wide marble staircase to my left that matched the pillars. There was a long dark walnut table lined with varnished chairs. Brass looking candlesticks sat upon the table with the wick unlit and just past the table was a wide-open doorway. It was so beautiful, I almost forgot where I was until the other man spoke and I was brought back to reality.
“Wait here, I’ll let him know we’ve returned with the girl”. He told the man that carried me here.
I shifted nervously from foot to foot as I tried to gulp down the lump that was stuck in my throat as the silence was deafening.
All too soon, a young looking man with short dark hair appeared at the balcony that led to the grand staircase. “This is her?” He asked and the man stood next to me nodded.
He walked slowly down the stairs, like he was bothered by doing a chore. As soon as he reached the bottom and started walking towards me, I noticed how dark his eyes were, they were almost as black as his hair. He was wearing nothing but some baggy pants and a thick black robe that hung loose around him, his white, toned body on show.
I tensed as he got closer, his eyes wandering over me as if he was trying to suss me out in one look, either that or he was purposely trying to intimidate me, which was working on every bone in my body.
“And John?” He asked the man, still keeping his eyes on me.
“He gave no assurance that he has the money. In fact, the man barely spoke a word”.
“Well then!” The young man spoke to me with a grin. “Who knows how long you’ll be here then. If taking you doesn’t get my money, perhaps we may have to up the ante”.
I sucked in a deep breath as my body shook, hoping he didn’t mean savagely kill me by his words.
The young man smirked and turned away, heading back to the staircase. “Come young girl, taking you is enough for now. I’ll show you where you’ll be staying, so hurry up and follow! I’d like to get back to my evening!”
I quickly followed as my legs wobbled with each step. I wrapped my arms around myself, feeling so small and insignificant around these men that could kill me in an instant.
He led me down a long, wide hall that had double doors on each side. We stopped near the end and pointed to a set that were shut.
“That’s my room. Don’t go in there unless I give you permission. Do you understand?”
I just nodded submissively.
The doors suddenly opened and out walked a tall, slim, flawless woman with long red, poker straight hair over her shoulders that ended just above her hips, and she sniffed the air as she came over to us.
“Another human?” She said in a sleeky voice.
“John’s daughter”. He told her and she smirked as she snaked her arms over his shoulders.
“I hope you don’t plan on her staying with us. I won’t share with a human!”
The young man laughed. “Lyra don’t speak like a fool! She will be staying in there!” He pointed to a narrow wooden door that was in front of us, not far from his own bedroom doors.
The woman laughed hysterically. “Oh, you naughty man! I love it!”
He moved away from her and opened the door to show a tiny room that looked more fit to be a broom cupboard. It had nothing but an old metal bed with some sheets thrown on it in a heap. “Make yourself comfy”. He said sarcastically and they both walked off to their room laughing at my expense.
I slowly stepped into the room and managed to find a long piece of string hanging from the ceiling. I pulled it and a dim light bulb flashed on. I shut the door behind me and as soon as I heard the clicking of it closing, I slumped against it to the floor. I brought my knees into my chest and hugged into them as I began to cry against them. The tears soaking into my leggings. I thought of my own room and how much I wished I could be there right now. How I was there one minute, then here the next in a musky old cupboard completely alone, wishing that the hard, cold floor would swallow me up and take me to a world far away from here…. Away from the blood suckers that were in the room right next to me and who knows how many others were here!
I tried to cry quietly, stifling my sobs into my legs and arms, not wanting anyone to hear me and find more amusement from what was to become of me. I wondered if my mum was feeling as desperate as I was, if she was still crying as many tears as me. I didn’t even want to think of my dad. I still didn’t understand how I was in this mess…. How he had gotten me into this mess! Me for money? Was all I could think… but why? Why did he owe vampires so much money? They wouldn’t just come onto our territory if they didn’t have a good reason!
I was too cold and stiff to move, and I could barely feel my bum from sitting on the hard floor, but the bed didn’t look any more appealing, and I just didn’t have the energy or the will to move. I just wanted to scream….. scream and cry until there was nothing left!
I led still, my body stiff and tense on the hard bed. I vaguely remember dragging myself onto it,or how long I had sat and cried for on the floor. There wasn’t even a window in this tight, narrow cupboard, so I couldn’t see if it was still night or day now.No matter how much I tried to go over what had happened, it just refused to sink in. I felt as though I was just in a real life- like dream, that I must have watched a scary movie before going to sleep and now I was dreaming that I was in one of my own.Since I had been in here though, I hadn’t heard a sound, not a faint voice, a door opening or the creak of a floorboard. I didn’t know if that was a good thing or a bad thing… Are they preparing to drink my blood maybe? Who gets to? Will they take turns? My mind was my own worst enemy at this point. It was doing me no favours in calming my nerves or in any way rational right now! My imagination running wild with what might happen or what was lurking around. I was still trying to pi
Three days later.I sat up on the bed and started to get dressed for the day, just my usual jeans and one of my strap tops that were starting to smell a bit musky. I had noticed the corners of the room were damp and some of them covered in bits of mould, so by now I probably smell like an old piece of furniture that had been left out in the rain to grow new life! My armpits smelt and my hair was greasy. I hadn’t showered or bathed at all since I’d been here, I was too scared to use anything other than my own room. Just constant thoughts of what if I’m in there and somebody knocks? Is there a schedule for who uses what and when? And what if Lyra finds out? She’s constantly snarling at me every morning when I deliver their breakfast. Only yesterday she chucked her raw steak at me, claiming it was too small and the bloody steak stained the top I had on. Seeing as I still didn’t know where the washing room was, I chucked my dirty top into the dumpster in the kitchen. I sat quietly, shut
Two weeks later:Thanks to my human friends I made, I finally got to bathe and shower regularly. They had taken me down to where their rooms were, they had three bathrooms just on their floor and told me I could use them any time I wanted to shower in peace. So, every night after I did all that Lyra tasked me with, I’d take a fresh fluffy towel that they insisted I use, and take a long hot bath in solitude. It was all I looked forward to after each long day of cleaning their room, polishing her shoes, fetching her food, collecting all her clean clothes and putting them away and basically waiting on her hand and foot. Whatever she wanted and when she wanted it, I had to fetch it, do it quickly and just the way she liked it.In general, I wouldn’t have minded doing all those things… apart from the fact that my fingers were stiff, and I could hardly feel them now. Everything I did, at least made the time pass by quickly, rather than just sitting in my cupboard alone willing the time to s
Kyan’s Pov:4 days previous. I loved this hotel, I loved the island, all the homes belonged to ones that had spent years helping this place to become the safe and remote haven it is, away from everyone else that wasn’t our kind. The couple that ran everything here was actually once human, but at the age of thirteen, after spending years of being beaten to a pulp by his alcoholic father, Donny found himself wandering the streets alone, when he finally left his home. He happened to stumble across a young girl, Marina, who didn’t look much older than him. They became the best of friends and when he learned that she was in fact a vampire and so were her parents who had taken him into their home and cared for him, he pleaded with them to turn him. They waited until he was twenty-one, turned him and he married and lived his life with Marina, his best friend. But over the years, Donny wanted to get as far away from humans as possible, so both he and Marina left and found this incredible isl
Ellie’s Pov:Nine days later.I managed to avoid Kyan at all costs. There were times when I’d hear him talking in the kitchen with Melanie and the others. Those mornings were the worst because I always got the shit end of Lyra’s attitude when I took longer than usual to get her food. It always resulted in having things thrown at me. This morning it was the cup of blood that she tipped all over my head. Luckily, I was fortunate to have the fun four looking out for me and when I went back down to the kitchen, they looked at me in horror like I had been part of a massacre. Melanie rushed me into the bathroom, while Faye promised to get a start on cleaning their room until I could take over.It took both me and Melanie to wash and scrub all of the red out of my hair. The water still wasn’t completely clear when I gave up and wanted to clean their room. The whole time Faye was in their room, I kept panicking that Lyra would come back to find her there instead of me. She’d be fuming to know
I woke up the next morning and stretched out across the warm, cosy bed, forgetting at first where I was. I quickly stopped and bolted upright, listening for anything outside my door. It was quiet, nothing but the chirping of birds outside my big bay window and no Lyra bashing into my room.I got up and tiptoed to the door and quietly twisted the handle, opening the door with a quiet squeak and poking my head around to see if anyone was out there. Then I saw Lord Talon sitting in his chair already looking at me and I froze.“Good morning. Did you sleep well?” He asked with a softness in his voice.I cleared my throat and opened the door a bit wider as I stood in front of it, willing myself to appear less afraid, but my rapid heartbeat was telling me different. “Yes,” I answered simply.“I had food brought up”. He said as he pointed to the
Two days later: Since I’d been staying in Talon’s quarters, things were much quieter and Lyra hadn’t once been by. Luckily, Kyan had only stopped by once since the last time and I was already in bed when I heard him speaking to Talon, but the hushed conversation was too quiet for me to know what they were speaking about and I didn’t want to take my chances of hovering by the door, being nosey, seeing as he was once again curious about who I was.I had started to relax more around Lord Talon. He didn’t speak a lot, apart from the usual morning small talk, he spent most of his time writing in big brown heavy books or signing things and reading. He would do his rounds of the castle to keep a watch over everything, but he was never gone for too long and I’d spend my time just pottering in and out of my room. The time would slowly tick by, but as bored as I s
I sat comfortably in a soft black velvet armchair with a blanket draped over my knees as Talon was writing in one of his hefty books. He had put on some quiet classical music on his turntable as I delved into Emma’s journal. I had wanted to read it the moment he gave it to me, but he insisted on showing me more of the castle. I had seen so little in my time here, I had no idea how many floors, corridors and little tucked away allies were here.He had taken me down to where the humans stayed. They had their own fancy dining area and large bedrooms. I had seen their bathrooms before when Michelle took me there, but I didn’t see just how much space in the castle they had all to themselves, it was practically a whole other wing! Then he took me up the staircase opposite the one I always used to show me all the rooms of the other vampires that lived here or passed by. We didn’t go in them, of course, but I could see that there were still so many other places just on their side of the castl
I woke up early, the birds outside my window tweeting away as the sun was beginning to rise. I could already hear Talon in the next room rummaging around and I knew we weren’t the only ones awake. Everyone would now be getting out of bed to prepare themselves for the day ahead. I quickly put on all of my clothes I had chosen to wear whilst we hid in the tunnels. I knew it would be cold down there, so my three layers of tops and jumpers would hopefully keep me warm enough. I tied back my hair and clicked open my bedroom door, to see Talon putting away a handful of papers in a big black folder. “Good morning Ellie, you’re ready to go?” “Yes, what are you doing?” I asked as I watched him neatly place the folder on the main table. “Just getting things in order, in case I don’t make it back”. He said so calmly as if he didn’t realise exactly what his words meant. “You WILL make it back, Talon, I know you will”. I tried to reassure him and myself, even though doubt was ma
“You’re quick” Del said as he walked back across the mats, “But you’ll need to be quicker”.I bent over leaning my hands on my legs as I tried to catch my breath, I had so much sweat forming all over my body, even my pulled back hair was wet! “I’m being as quick as I can!” I told him in annoyance. “You do have an advantage, in case you’ve forgotten”. “If you find it hard now, how are you going to defend yourself against rogues? He asked with a frown.“I’ll just have to do as best as I can, Del”. “I don’t think you’re at your best, Ell’s, and so far I’ve taken it pretty easy on you!” “Easy? You call that easy?”. “Del, let her have a break!” Kiko suggested as she watched our training. “She looks like she’s about to topple over!” “Fine!” He slightly eased up. “Get some water, then we’ll go again!” “Fuck!” I said as my chest heaved, trying to catch my breath. I dragged myself over to the bench and drank what was left of my water.“She’s improved a lot, Del. If we go too hard she won
I sat at the table in the main hall with Del and Kiko as we decided to take an extra long break in between training. Kiko was telling Del about my improvements, that I had been able to floor her more often than not and, with a cheeky grin, Del looked at me. “How about I come on in these training sessions, see if you can knock me down?” “Yea, sounds good to me!” I said confidently with a shrug.“Del!” Kiko groaned. "I’m trying to build her up so don’t be too full on." “I won’t, I won’t! I’ll try to take it easy. Don’t worry Ellie, I won’t be too hard on you!” he said with a playful wink.“Bring it on!” I replied, feeling competitive.“You think you can take me down that easily?” He said with a cocky smile.“I think you’re scared I’ll be able to!” I shot back at him.“Ooooh” Kiko cooed, chuckling. “Del, you’re not going to back down are you? But you can if you’re too afraid!” She joined in with goading him.“Alright, alright girls! I know what you’re doing. But I’ll join in, don’t you
Ellie’s POV:I opened my eyes to see Kyan already awake looking back at me and my whole body fuzzed as I looked dreamily into his eyes.“Good morning”. He whispered.“Good morning”. I said with a little smile and a little wish that we could just stay like this.“Did you sleep ok?”“I did”. I nodded against my pillow. “Thank you for staying here, I hope you got some sleep too”. “I did, don’t worry. In fact, it’s probably one of the best nights’ sleep I’ve had in a while”. “Me too”. I grinned and my stomach flipped when he gave me one of his own right back.“I’m sure you didn’t expect to be back here again”.“I wanted to come back at some point. I would have always wanted to come back, I just didn’t think it would be so soon. I was only gone a day and now I’m back already and you all have to put up with me again”. I smiled with a chuckle, trying to lighten how heavy my heart was feeling.“No, we’re always happy to have you here Ellie”. “Wow Kyan, you’ve gotten softer, carry on like t
Kyan's POV:“FATHER!” I shouted as soon as the castle doors were opened. I set Ellie down on the edge of the table as I quickly scanned her for any injuries. But when my eyes clocked the red palm mark on her cheek, my stomach lurched, and my throat let out an unvoluntary growl.Father came to the balcony and with one look at Ellie, he sped down the stairs and stopped right in front of her with a furious look. “What happened??” He asked in demand for an answer.“Two rogues got into her house and tried to take her. We managed to ambush them once they crossed into the forest”. I informed him.“What?” He asked as his eyes widened and his mouth turned into a scowl as he looked back at Ellie. “Did they attack Bluebay?” “No”. She replied quietly and I could see her trying to gulp through her nerves. “At least… I don’t think so”. “No, we were near the border, nothing happened!”. Zekan informed them both.“How did they get in?” Father asked her.“Through the yard doors, it was boarded up, bu
My legs were tired, and my brain felt fried. I had spent hours last night doing my resume and printing numerous copies. I had headed out first thing this morning to hand deliver them, but finding an open position I could fill was more difficult than I’d hoped. I cycled from building to building, streets and blocks. I had gotten to the point where I practically pleaded for them to notify me of any positions available…. At this rate, I would be happy to be an errand girl or a janitor if it meant I’d have some wages for the time being! Out of the fifty copies I made, only five got handed in and I still didn’t know where I could stay. Apart from one little old fashioned hotel out in the hills, there weren’t any others, it just wasn’t a needed thing here. But that place was for campers and hikers. I doubt I could afford to stay there on a nightly basis. My head hadn’t stopped swimming today with everything I had to secure in time, before the house was no longer our
Here I was….. back again! I stared through the gap in the trees at my town as Kyan took my hand and helped me down from his back. It was just as gloomy today as it was last time, and my stomach churned with nausea as I looked at the street ahead where only a few days ago I was holding my dead mother. I already knew coming back so soon was going to be hard, but my legs felt like jelly and my head was starting to feel dizzy and hot. “Are you sure you want to do this?” Kyan asked and it was only then I realised he was still holding my hand. I just nodded glumly as I squeezed his cool palm, wishing I didn’t have to go alone. “We’ll be right here if it’s too much”. Del reassured me as he rubbed my arm supportively and once again I just nodded in reply as if I’d completely lost the ability to speak. “Remember keep your wits about you!” Kyan reminded me as he stepped closer, looking right into my eyes. “You run
Two days later: “Does the coat fit ok?” Talon asked as I put on the black coat he had insisted I wear with the black knee length dress that belonged to Cecelia. “It’s perfect!”. I replied, trying to muster a smile, but I was thankful for him letting me wear these clothes. It’s not like I had packed anything smart enough to wear, especially for something like today. “I know today will be very hard on you Ellie”. He said with a long sigh. “Me and the whole town”. I said as I flopped down onto a chair at his room table. “I very much wish I could be there to help you through it. If there was a way….” “Of course, I know you would!” I interrupted him, not wanting him to feel any guilt for me having to go alone. “I’ll be ok. I have my friends and my dad will be there!”. “I know… I just”. “You worry!” I smiled a watery smile. “You’ve worried and kept me safe the whole time I’ve been here”. I told him as I got up and walked over to him, placing my hands in his. “So, f
Ellie's POV: I woke up, blinking open my eyes that felt almost as dry as my mouth and I could see by the light shining through my curtains onto the wall, it was daytime. My stomach sank once again, just as it did every time I woke up from my perfect dreams. I’d sleep and see her just as she always used to be… smiling, happy, dancing! Then the moment my eyes opened, I’d see her face breathless in my arms and the reality would hit me, like I was seeing it for the first time all over again. I pushed myself up against my pillows, relieved to see the glass of water on my nightstand. I gulped it and felt the coolness run through my body, finally hydrating myself, but unfortunately it didn’t wash away the heaviness in my chest. I can barely even remember coming back here. I knew someone was holding me and in my mind I saw Kyan. I wanted it to be Kyan, but I only noticed the cold breeze, but just for an instant before, I slipped back into the peaceful darkness of my sleep. I h
