Mandy’s POV

The letter slipped from my hands and fluttered to the floor, but I couldn’t bring myself to pick it up.

My fingers were numb, and my mind was racing, trying to process what I had just read. Lucas was the father.

The words burned through my thoughts, leaving a trail of confusion and pain. I had no idea how to make sense of it all.

I stood frozen in the hallway, the weight of the world pressing down on me. How could this be real? How could Lucas have kept something like this from me? How had I been so blind?

The sound of footsteps echoed from behind, and I turned, startled to see Lucas standing in the doorway.

His face was pale, his eyes wide with concern, but I couldn’t bring myself to look at him. Not now. Not after everything.

“Mandy,” he said softly, his voice cracking with emotion. “Please, let me explain. I swear, I didn’t know about the test. I didn’t know she was going to do this.”

I swallowed hard, my throat tight with anger and hurt. “You didn’t know?” I repeate

I could still hear her words echoing in my head, like a constant reminder of everything I’d messed up.That was the hardest part. The doubt. The fear that no matter what I did, no matter how hard I tried, I might never be able to fix this. Mandy had been my everything. She still was. Lucas’s POVI stepped inside, the door clicking softly behind me, and the air felt different. Tense. Heavy. It was like walking into a room full of unspoken words. Mandy didn’t say anything as she led me into the living room, her steps slow, deliberate. I could tell she was trying to keep her distance, trying to figure out whether she even wanted me there. I felt it—the gap between us, the miles of emotional space that had opened up since the moment I’d lied to her. But I wasn’t going to back down. I couldn’t. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, but the weight of her gaze made it hard to focus. I wanted to reach out, to touch her, to make her understand that I wasn’t the same man who had kept so many secrets from her. But I knew better than to push too hard. “So,” I started, my voice coming out quieter than I intended, “what now?” Mandy didn’t immediately respond. She just crossed her arms and leaned against the couch, her eyes locked on mine. There was a certain

Mandy’s POVI sat on the edge of the couch, staring at the empty space in front of me. The silence in the apartment felt like it was closing in, suffocating me. My mind kept racing, replaying everything that had happened—Lucas’s apology, his desperate attempt to make things right, and the way he’d looked at me when he said he was willing to do whatever it took. I wanted to believe him. I wanted to believe that he was truly sorry, that he was ready to change. But a part of me—maybe a bigger part than I cared to admit—was terrified. Terrified that I’d been fooled once again. I loved him. I always had. But the lies, the secrets… they had cut deeper than I was willing to admit. How could I trust him again after everything he’d kept from me? The worst part was that I didn’t even know if I could trust myself anymore. Had I been blind all this time? Had I ignored the warning signs, convinced myself that everything was fine, when in reality, I was just letting myself be deceived? I

I just needed her to see that.I ran a hand through my hair, staring at the screen of my phone. Mandy hadn’t responded to my message. I’d hoped she would, but I couldn’t blame her for not wanting to hear from me. Not after everything. But I couldn’t just sit here and wait. I had to do something. I had to prove to her that Vanessa was lying. That everything she’d revealed about her pregnancy was just manipulation, a way to turn Mandy against me. I grabbed my laptop and started digging. I needed to know everything about Vanessa. What had she done in the past? What was her game? It didn’t take long to uncover something that made my blood run c

Mandy’s POVI sat on the couch, staring at the blank wall in front of me, my mind spinning. I was trying to piece together everything—my feelings for Lucas, the lies, the hurt, and now, this new mess with Vanessa. I didn’t know what to believe anymore. I kept thinking back to the good times. The moments when Lucas had made me laugh, when everything felt easy and right. When we were in sync, when I could look at him and feel like I was home. I remembered the way his eyes softened when he smiled at me, how he always knew just what to say when I was feeling down. But then I remembered the bad times too. The lies, the secrets, the way he’d kept things from me. The betrayal. The feeling of being so alone, even when he was right there beside me. I didn’t know if I could go back to that. I didn’t know if I could trust him again. But the truth was, I still loved him. I couldn’t deny that. And that made everything so much harder.I needed time. Time to think, to process everything. I had put myself out there, let her see the parts of me that I’d kept hidden for so long. But nothing was enough. She still looked at me like I was a stranger, like every word I said was just another lie.I was losing her, and the worst part was, I didn’t know how to stop it. I couldn’t make the past disappear. I couldn’t erase the mistakes I’d made, no matter how hard I tried.I’d done everything right. I’d apologize. I’d been honest. I’d laid myself bare for her, but it still wasn’t enough. Mandy’s POVThe tension in the room was suffocating. James stood at the door like he owned the place, his smirk practically daring Lucas to do something about it. I could feel the heat radiating off Lucas as he stood beside me, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles were white. “What the hell are you doing here, James?” Lucas growled, his voice low and dangerous. James didn’t flinch. If anything, his smirk widened. “Relax, Lucas. I’m not here to fight. I’m here to talk. To clear the air.” “Clear the air?” I cut in, stepping forward. My voice was sharp, fueled by the frustration and confusion that had been building up inside me. “You show up at my door, drop a bombshell about Lucas, and now you want to ‘clear the air’? Are you serious?” James’s eyes flicked to me, and for a moment, I saw something that looked like regret. But it was gone as quickly as it came, replaced by that infuriating smugness. “I know you’re angry, Mandy. You have every right to be. But you deserve to k

Mandy’s POVThe phone slipped from my hand, clattering onto the floor. My knees buckled, and I grabbed the edge of the table to steady myself. My chest felt tight, like I couldn’t pull in enough air. Emily. My baby. Something was wrong with Emily. “Mandy?” Lucas’s voice cut through the fog, sharp and urgent. He stepped closer, his hands hovering like he wanted to catch me if I fell. “What’s going on? What happened?” I shook my head, my voice caught somewhere between a sob and a gasp. “Emily... She’s at the hospital. Something’s wrong.” Lucas’s face paled. “I’ll drive.” I didn’t argue. I couldn’t. My legs felt like jelly as I stumbled toward the door, Lucas’s steady hand on my back guiding me. The ride to the hospital was a blur of headlights and panic. My thoughts spiraled, each one worse than the last. Was she hurt? Sick? How bad was it? “Wendy wouldn’t have called if it wasn’t serious,” I whispered, more to myself than to Lucas. He tightened his grip on the steering

My daughter whimpered, her big, frightened eyes darting between me and Mandy. “Let her go, Ivan,” I said, my voice low, even. Controlled. Because if I let the rage take over now, I’d lose her. Ivan chuckled, shifting Emily slightly in his arms. “You think it’s that easy?” His gaze flicked to Mandy. “You’ve always been so predictable, Lucas. Always acting like you’re the one in control. But look at you now.” He tilted his head. “Powerless.” Mandy stood frozen beside me, her hand gripping my arm like it was the only thing keeping her upright. I could feel her shaking, but she didn’t break. She didn’t scream or lunge at him. She trusted me. And she should. I forced a slow breath. I couldn’t make a mistake. Not with Emily in his hands. “What do you want?” I asked, keeping my voice steady. “Money? Territory?” I knew what his

Her breath was shallow, and for a split second, I saw everything I’d worked to protect hanging by a thread. Emily. Her daughter. My child, too, whether we’d ever said the words out loud or not.“Lucas…” Mandy whispered my name like it was a plea, but I didn’t have an answer. There was nothing to say because I felt it too—everything we’d been through, everything we’d fought for, now felt like it was slipping through my fingers.I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. “We’ll fix this, Mandy. I promise you.” But even as the words left my mouth, I wasn’t sure if I believed them. Her eyes locked onto mine, but her voice cracked as she spoke. “How? Lucas’s POVThe moment Viktor’s voice crackled over the radio, my stomach dropped. “Ivan knows we’re coming.” The air in the van grew heavy, like we were all holding our breath at the same time. Mandy’s hand tightened around mine, her nails digging into my skin, but I didn’t care. Her fear was my fear, and it was all too real. “What do you mean he knows?” James’s voice came sharp and fast over the comms. “He’s moved his men,” Viktor replied, his tone clipped. “The hub isn’t empty. It’s crawling with guards. This isn’t going to be the surgical strike we planned.” My jaw clenched, anger bubbling just beneath the surface. “Then we adapt,” I said, my voice steady despite the chaos brewing inside me. “We didn’t come this far to turn back now.” Viktor’s silence was answer enough. He wasn’t going to argue, but he wasn’t happy about it either. “Stay sharp,” he said finally. “And for God’s sake, don’t get yourselves killed.” The radio went dead, leaving us in a suffocating sile

Mandy’s POVThe dust from the van’s tires still hung in the air, gritty and suffocating. My hands were trembling as I clung to Lucas, the warmth of his body grounding me in the chaos around us. But Viktor’s words rang in my ears like a death knell. *This was just the beginning.* “What do you mean?” I asked, my voice shaky. “What beginning?” Viktor crouched beside us, his gaze sharp and unyielding. “Ivan isn’t the kind of man who lets go of his prey. He wanted to make a statement tonight, and he succeeded. But this? This was just his opening move.” I looked down at Lucas, his face battered and bloodied but alive. Relief warred with terror in my chest. “Then we need to stop him. We can’t just wait for him to come after us again.” James appeared at my side, his jaw tight. “She’s right. We can’t keep playing defense. If we don’t take the fight to Ivan, he’ll keep coming until there’s nothing left of us.” Viktor let out a dry laugh. “And what exactly do you propose, James? Marc

Mandy’s POVThe bloodied man collapsed to the floor, his words echoing in the tense silence. Ivan’s men were here. The weight of those words hit me like a punch to the gut. Viktor didn’t flinch. He leaned back in his chair, his sharp gaze flicking to the man crumpled on the floor. “So, it begins,” he said calmly, as though he’d been expecting this all along. James, however, wasn’t so composed. He grabbed my arm, pulling me back toward the door. “We need to leave. Now.” But Viktor’s voice cut through the panic. “Running will only get you killed. Ivan doesn’t leave loose ends.” James turned, his hand already reaching for his weapon. “Then maybe it’s time someone took care of Ivan.” Viktor chuckled, slow and deliberate. “Ah, the bravado of the unprepared. You think you can waltz into Ivan’s world and take him down? He’s been playing this game longer than you’ve been alive.” I stepped forward, my voice shaking but firm. “Then tell us what to do. Mandy’s POVJames’s hand hovered near his jacket, ready to draw whatever weapon he had stashed there. But the man standing by the car didn’t even flinch. His calmness was unnerving, like he knew he had all the power in the world. “I said,” the man repeated, his voice sharp, “get in the car if you want to save Lucas. This isn’t a request.” I glanced at James, my heart pounding in my chest. “What do we do?” I whispered. James’s jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing. “We don’t trust him, that’s for damn sure.” The man smirked, as if he could hear us. “You don’t have to trust me. But you don’t have time to argue. Lucas’s life is ticking away with every second you waste.” Something about the way he said it made my stomach twist. He wasn’t bluffing. Whoever this man was, he knew exactly what was happening, and he wasn’t here to play games. “We don’t have a choice,” I said, my voice trembling. “If there’s even a chance he’s telling the truth, we have to take it.” James hesitated, hi

The man who had barked Lucas’s name stepped forward, his gun aimed directly at us. He was tall, broad, and radiated an air of menace. “Mr. Vanderbilt, you’ve been a hard man to find. But you know how this works. You can’t run forever.” Lucas’s jaw tightened, his body coiled like a spring. “I don’t owe you anything.” The man smirked. “Oh, but you do. My gaze was locked on the doctor, who stood there with an expression that teetered between pity and professional detachment. “What do you mean... deliberate?” My voice sounded foreign to my own ears—shaky, distant. The doctor hesitated, clearly choosing his words carefully. “The type of toxin we suspect—based on her symptoms—isn’t something one would encounter in everyday life. It’s... rare, and it would require deliberate exposure.” “Deliberate exposure?” Lucas’s voice was low, deadly. “Are you saying someone poisoned her?” The doctor nodded slowly. “That’s what we’re investigating. I’ve already informed the authorities. They’ll need to speak with you both as soon as possible.” Authorities. Police. Poison. I couldn’t process it. My daughter—my innocent, bright, beautiful

She needs me!” His grip tightened, his face inches from mine. “She needs them to save her. Please, Mandy, don’t make this harder for her—or for yourself.” I sagged against him, my strength gone, and he guided me out of the room. The door shut behind us with a heavy thud, cutting me off from my baby. The hallway was eerily quiet compared to the chaos inside. My knees gave out, and I sank to the floor, my hands t
