Conrad wakes up to the sound of his alarm on his phone. Turning off his alarm, he gets up, fixes his bed, and prepares for his last day of work at Ultimo Coffee.
He was about to go out of his room until his Aunt Christy calls him. He answers the phone expecting that it might be news about his place in New York.
“Hey, Aunt Christy.” Conrad greeted.
“Conrad, I have good news for you.” She said excitedly.
“What is it?” He asked excitedly.
“I found a place for you.” She answered. “The place is great and it’s near at the Institute of Culinary Education.” She added. “Wait let me send you a pic of the place.”
Aunt Christy sends a picture of the apartment to Conrad. By the time Conrad receives the picture, he was amazed. The walls are sky blue, it had windows, the whole apartment is fully furnished and the kitchen is equipped with everything I needed. He then thinks about the price of the apartment since it looks too good to be expensive.
“Aunt Christy, isn’t this expensive?” He asked astoundingly.
“It’s not and don’t worry about it because I already took care of your first three months there.” She said.
“Thanks, Aunt Christy.” He thanked. “This is even better than the dorms or the one I found.”
“Oh, I almost forgot. You need to be there by tomorrow before five in the afternoon or they will be giving away your spot.”
“Wait, what?!” He shouted confusingly.
“I’ll send you the details and the paper works.” She said in a hurry. “Call me if there are any problems when you arrived there.”
“Wait, Aunt Christy…” Conrad stops and left speechless as Aunt Christy ends the call.
Conrad starts to worry about leaving. He also worries about his mother and grandmother’s reaction to him leaving tonight since everything was so sudden. He takes a deep breath and calms himself as he goes out of his room.
As he went down, he notices that his mother is still cooking breakfast. He takes a deep breath once more and gathers up the courage to tell the news to her mother. He goes to the kitchen and greets his mother.
“Good morning mom.” Conrad greeted as he kisses her on the cheeks.
“Good morning.” She greeted back. ”You have work today?” She asked.
“Yeah, I have” He answered. “It’s also going to be my last day there.” He added.
“Well, make sure to thank them for having you work there before you leave.” She said.
“Hey mom, I kind of forgot to tell you something.” He said worriedly.
“What is it?” She asked.
“I…” Conrad stopped as her mother’s phone suddenly rang.
“Conrad, can you tell me later?” She asked as she picks up her phone. “It’s my boss…” She said uncomfortably. “Also, can you continue cooking breakfast?” She added.
“Sure thing.” He answered
“Thanks.” She thanked me as she answers the phone.
Conrad sighs as he continues to cook breakfast while her mother is talking to her phone. His grandmother then enters the kitchen and she notices Conrad being bothered.
“Is everything okay?” She asked worriedly.
“Yeah, everything’s fine.” Conrad answered sarcastically.
“I know there’s something wrong once I see your gloomy face.” She said as she grabs Conrad’s right hand. “You can tell me.” She added.
“Well, you may not know this yet but, I’m leaving for college tomorrow morning.” He said worriedly. “Aunt Christy found me a place to stay there where there’s a kitchen.” He added.
“Why not leave a week before your semester starts?” She asked confusingly.
“There’s a catch actually.” He answered. “The catch is, if I don’t get to that apartment by tomorrow before five in the afternoon, they’ll give my spot to someone else since there were a lot of people who wanted the place and Aunt Christy already paid for it.” He added.
“Can’t blame Christy.” She said. “She’s fast in making decisions.” She added. “Does your mother know about this?” She asked.
“Not yet and that’s my problem right now.” He answered sadly. “I was about to tell her but her boss suddenly called.”
“If you want to get her attention, make it special.” She suggested as she gives Conrad a pat on the back. “Is breakfast ready yet?” She asked. “Can’t start the day right without breakfast.” She added as she takes a seat.
“I’ll bring it to the table grandma.” Conrad said.
Conrad finishes cooking breakfast and turns off the stove as he starts to prepare the table. While he prepares the table, an idea struck him on how he will get his mother’s attention.
By the time Conrad finishes preparing the table for breakfast, his mother suddenly rushes to the front door. Conrad chases her to the front door and stops her from leaving.
“Conrad, I’m sorry but I need to leave for work.” She said holding on to her things. “My boss needs me to do something important for him.” She added.
“Can’t you do it after breakfast?” Conrad questioned her. “Besides, your shift doesn’t start this early. In fact, it starts in an hour and a half.” He added.
“How did you know about my schedule?” She asked in confusion.
“Mom, I helped you with the spreadsheet with your schedule just last week.” He said. “C’mon, you also said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” He added as he imitates her mother's voice.
“Alright, I’ll eat breakfast, but I’ll have to leave after.” She said after staring at Conrad for imitating her.
She puts her things on a table near the front door and joins Conrad and his grandmother for some breakfast. As she takes a seat, Conrad gives her a plate, a fork, and a glass of orange juice. While they’re eating, Conrad suggests that he’ll cook dinner tonight since he’ll only work until four in the afternoon today. They all agreed and his grandmother takes the hint that that will be his idea in getting her attention.
Minutes later, they finish eating breakfast and Conrad starts to clean up the table. He puts everything in the sink and his mother kisses him on the cheek as she leaves for work. With the front door closing, Conrad’s grandmother takes over in cleaning the dishes as she reminds Conrad that he still has work today. He says his thanks to his grandmother for taking over in washing the dishes. His grandmother also tells him to change his shirt since it smells like cooking breakfast. He goes back to his room to change his shirt and get his things before he leaves.
He goes into his room, gets a clean white short-sleeve button-up shirt in his dresser, and changes into it. By the time he wears the button-up shirt, he looks in the mirror and sighs knowing that he’ll be leaving the house soon. Noticing the time, he grabs his things and the key to his car as he goes down.
While going down the stairs, he notices his grandmother waiting by the staircase.
“Are you okay staying here by yourself grandma?” Conrad asked.
“I’ll be fine.” She answered
“Well, if you get hungry, there are leftovers in the fridge, you can heat up in the microwave.” He said, “Also if you get bored…”
“Let me stop you there.” She interrupted. “Don’t worry about me. I know how everything works in this house.” She added.
“Okay, I won’t.” He said as he kisses her grandmother on the cheeks. “See you later grandma.” He said as he leaves for work.
Closing the door behind him, he unlocks his car, goes inside, and starts it. He leaves their driveway and goes to work.
Conrad arrives at Ultimo Coffee. Knowing that he needs to tell his manager about him leaving, he starts to feel nervous as he doesn’t know what to tell his manager since everything was so sudden. He takes a deep breath and gets out of the car. By the time he gets out of the car, he sees Duke opening up the café.“Good morning Duke!” Conrad greets while approaching him.“Hey, Conrad.” Duke greets back as he opens the café.“I see you’re in charge of opening up today.” Conrad said. “Do you know what time the manager will arrive?” He asked Duke.“No, why?” Duke asked back.“I’m leaving for college tomorrow morning.” Conrad answered. “I have to tell Sir Devon about it since everything was so sudden.” He added.“That’s cool.” Duke said. “What culinary school you’re going to?” He asked out of curio
Conrad gets in his car and takes a deep breath knowing that he’ll be missing working in Ultimo Coffee. He starts the car and leaves the parking space. He drives past Ultimo Coffee, looks at his mirror, and sees Ultimo getting smaller as he drives further.A few moments later, Conrad arrives at his home and turns off the car. He sees his grandma sitting by the front door with a cup of tea in her hand. Conrad walks up to her and kisses her on the cheek.“Everything okay grandma?” Conrad asked.“Everything’s fine.” She replied. “Just breathing in some fresh air.” She added. “By the way, if you ever need a suggestion to cook for dinner, I’d suggest you cook something that your mother loves.” She suggested to Conrad.“Thanks for the suggestion grandma.” He thanked her as he hugs her. “Do you want to help in the kitchen?” He asked as he opens the doors.“No th
After dinner, Conrad excuses himself to go to his bedroom since he will start packing for tomorrow. As Conrad went ahead, Elizabeth suggested that they should stay in the living room. They all agreed and went to the living room.Mike and Elizabeth sat down together on the couch while Elizabeth’s mother sat on her armchair.“Mother, would you like to introduce yourself to Mike, so that you two would get to know each other better?” Elizabeth suggested to her mother.“Where are my manners?” Elizabeth's mother said in realization. “I’m Betty Walter by the way.” She said to Mike. “I’m Elizabeth’s mother and Conrad’s grandmother.” She added.“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Walter.” Mike said.“You can call me Betty.” Betty suggested to Mike.“Sure thing, Betty.” Mike replied.“Let me ask you, why are you dating my
The next morning, Conrad woke up by the sound of his alarm. He turns off his alarm on his phone, stands up, and sighs as he sees his empty room. Sadness starts to fill him knowing that he’s not ready to leave yet. As he was about to change into his clothes for today, there was a sudden knock on the door.“Who is it?” Conrad shouted.“It’s your future stepdad,” Mike answered. “Is it okay for me to come inside?” He asked.“Yeah, you can,” Conrad replied.“Your mom wanted me to tell you that breakfast is ready,” Mike said as opens the door.“I’ll go down as soon as I finished taking a shower,” Conrad replied while he’s preparing his clothes.“Hey, why is this photo faced down?” He asked as he noticed the photo on top of the shelf.“I think it’s best if we leave that there,” Conrad said.“How is that?&
While Mike was helping Conrad put his stuff in Conrad’s car, he suddenly asks him a question.“So, this is it.” Mike said. “Are you excited to live a new life in New York?” He asked.“To be honest Mike, I don’t know.” Conrad answered. “It’s like, all my feelings are all mixed up.” He added“Whatever it is you’re feeling, always remember that we’re here for you.” Mike said.“Take care of mom for me.” Conrad said as he puts his right hand on Mike’s left shoulder.“I will don’t worry.” Mike answered with a smile knowing that he has Conrad’s trust.A few minutes later, they finished putting Conrad’s stuff in his car. Conrad goes back inside to tell his goodbyes. He opens the door for one last time and sighs as he enters the house. As he went inside, he sees his mother and his grandmother waiting by the door. H
After hours of driving, Conrad finally arrives in New York. “Welcome to New York” by Taylor Swift, starts to play as he drives through Brooklyn Bridge. He drives past Times Square and was overwhelmed after seeing the place full of people. He also expected that it would be full of billboards but he still got amazed by it. A few minutes, he arrives at the address where his apartment would be. Conrad was puzzled at first since he expected something big but what he arrived at was bigger than he expected. He goes inside, bringing some of his stuff in, and sees if he can find the landlord of the apartment. Luckily, the landlord was there by the entrance. He put down the box he was bringing and introduced himself. “I’m Conrad Walter, the tenant of apartment number 217.” Conrad introduced. “Nice to meet you, sir…?” He said unsurely. “Call me Sir Hampton.” Sir Hampton said. “So, you’re the other tenant who rented apartment 217.” He added. “Other tenant?” Conra
Conrad opens the door and they both went inside along with the stuff. As they went inside, they were surprised to see a young man, about his age, in his boxers and a white shirt. All of them stood silently as the situation became awkward for them. Sir Hampton approaches the man, pats him on the back whispering to him to wear his pants. The man rushes into a room, leaving the bowl of popcorn on the kitchen counter.“Sorry about that.” Sir Hampton apologized.“It’s fine,” Conrad replied. “I also get too comfortable sometimes…” He said with a giggle.Sir Hampton Conrad him a quick tour of the apartment and explains how everything works there. Conrad was pleased to see that it’s the same as the pictures her aunt sent to him. As Conrad was about to go into his bedroom, the man went out of the room, wearing light gray joggers, and introduces himself.“Hi, Alfred Santiago by the way.” He introduc
The next morning, Conrad opens the fridge to see if he can cook something up. It turns out, the fridge was empty since he forgot to go to the store yesterday before arriving at the apartment. He calls Alfred to ask if he knows any whole foods store nearby, but he didn’t answer. Conrad calls him again and still no answer. He goes to Alfred’s room to see if he’s there. He knocks upon entering and Alfred wasn’t there. He opens his phone to check any nearby whole foods store nearby. Luckily, he founds one at Houston Street, which is walking distance from his apartment. He goes back to his room to get his wallet and his keys to the apartment on top of his nightstand. While he was putting on his white sneakers, his mother suddenly calls him. He thinks if he’s going to answer the phone or not since he’s afraid that it might be about him calling his father. He decides to ignore it and probably text her later once he comes back.Going
For the two of them, touring Madison Square Garden was enjoyable. They get to see more than what is shown to the public; they get to experience the greatest moments that occurred there, even if it is just in virtual reality. They get to snap a lot of photos there, some of which are perfect for publishing on social media. Some were also ideal for changing their profile images. Despite this, Conrad is able to make Jaiden happy and enjoy her day, despite the fact that something is bothering her mind. He's simply hoping she'll open up before the day is done. After their tour of Madison Square Garden, they headed to Brooklyn, where Conrad had one more surprise in store for Jaiden. Since it was a little early for his surprise, he recalls how much she enjoyed Frozen Yogurt. So he decided to take her to a frozen yogurt shop he knew. Fortunately, the business was nearby, so there was no need for him to second-guess himself or rush their rendezvous. They h
Conrad has finished prepping for their New York tour. He was dressed in a white shirt and jeans with a Philadelphia-themed blazer. He was astonished to see Jaiden waiting by the doorway when he opened it.“Jaiden, everything okay?” He asked worriedly.“Yeah, I just kind of wanted to see what your room looks like.” She chuckled softly. “Hey, it’s the jacket I gave you.” She said as soon as she noticed the jacket. “It looks better on you in person than in the picture you sent me.”She holds onto Conrad’s shoulder and feels the fabric through as her hands caress his arms. She holds onto his hands and intertwines them. After a while, their foreheads stick to each other and they can feel each other’s warm breath. Jaiden gives out a smile as she reminisces the last time she felt comfortable and safe in Conrad’s arms. But now, she doesn’t feel it. It’s like the feeling she felt once, was long gone.“So… You’re going to let me in your room?” She asked as she let go.“Yeah, if you really want
Conrad felt upbeat as soon as he woke up on Saturday morning. He took out his phone and checked to see if he had any texts, which he did. Jaiden texted to inquire about tonight's movie night. He jumped out of bed, realizing he had forgotten it was movie night with Jaiden. He should have been panicked by this point, yet he was actually cool. It's not the calm before the storm, but rather the serenity of being ready for anything. After yesterday night, he thought he'd finally regained his confidence. But, he still has second thoughts about telling her the truth. He responds to her text and asks when they can video talk. He walks into the bathroom to brush his teeth and wash his face while he waits for her response. Jaiden had not responded by the time he was through. He knows she doesn't typically take this long to respond, so this was unusual for him. He exits the room and keeps his phone nearby in case Jaiden responds.Moments later, as Conrad was about to eat breakfast, Alfred emerge
The stars and moon shone brightly in the night sky, creating a lovely atmosphere. The couple was walking through the park, hands clasped and a smile on their cheeks. This hasn't transpired in New York since the couple met. The universe seemed to want them to meet and be together. Nothing went wrong on their date, and they intuitively felt like they could face the universe's challenges together.Walking along the park, they came across a huge fountain that seemed like where all the couples hang out. Some are throwing coins into the fountain wishing their love would last, some are sharing an ice cream cone by the side, and some just happened to make their relationship official.Looking around for a place to hang out, an outdoor cafe caught Conrad’s eye.“Want to hang out here for a while?” Conrad asked.“You go on ahead. I think I’m just going over the fountain.” She walked on over there immediately with a bothered look, leaving Conrad behind.Conrad noticed her troubled expression and
Friday night, the night where Conrad and Olivia had been waiting for. Both planned an extravagant night for their first date. And by means of making it extravagant, they both wanted it to be perfect. But little did they know, destiny has other plans for them.Conrad arrives at Olivia's apartment at exactly 7 pm as planned. As he was about to knock on the door, his hand stopped before his fingers could even touch it. He asked himself again if this was the right decision as anxiety is creeping up on him.He overthinks that maybe wearing a royal blue long sleeve polo, jeans, and white sneakers was a bad idea. He also thought that maybe he was making a bad decision. He takes a step back, shakes his hands, and takes a deep breath. He tells himself that he looks great tonight, his decision was right and nothing wrong was done as he reminds himself that he’s doing this for love. He regained his confidence and felt ready for their date again. He knocks on the door and patiently waits for Oliv
Back at the apartment, Conrad was lying down on his bed. After today’s events, he couldn’t stop thinking about it. It got stuck to his mind like sticky notes on a book. However, even though Olivia was acting a bit weird today, he didn’t realize during those moments that she was turning head over heels over him. He asked himself full of hope, “Is she the right person that will fit my future life?” But then, Jaiden suddenly pops into his head out of nowhere. He knew that Jaiden is also the right person, but he was having second thoughts wherein maybe having a long-distance relationship won’t work between them. They might be great for each other, but there will come a time when you will find someone else, and sooner or later, you’ll love that person more than the one you loved first. Alfred knocks on the door as he enters Conrad’s room and stands by the doorway. “Hey, you’ve been quiet for the past couple of hours… You okay?” Alfred said in a worried tone. “Yeah, it’s just that… I’ve
It’s finally Friday! However, it’s not the usual Friday where the day isn’t tiring nor relaxing.Today’s the day when Conrad and the others returned to school after a short break. Yet, they still have no clue about Chef Austin’s plan for today’s class. They clearly haven’t prepared for it and everyone is scared of what’s in store for today. As soon as Chef Austin enters the room, the room became silent and everyone was preparing themselves for whatever was coming their way. Chef Austin puts down his stuff on his desk and was confused why his students are quiet and being so serious.“Is everything okay class?” Chef Austin asked confusingly. “You haven’t looked this serious since our first day of classes.”Conrad stands up from his seat and answers Chef Austin. “With all due respect Chef Austin, everyone is actually preparing themselves for your plans today.”“What plans?” He became more confused by Conrad’s answer. “Am I forgetting something for today?”“Well, from your announcement th
Conrad was relieved when they arrived at a nearby café that wasn't overcrowded. Going to crowded places makes him nervous. He believes he is being judged by strangers, despite the lack of clear proof that they are. Let's just say that when he's depressed, he tends to avoid going to crowded places.Conrad smelled something aromatic as soon as they stepped inside. It wasn’t the freshly made pastries that the employees are putting inside the case nor the freshly brewed coffee. He takes a look around to see where the fragrant scent is coming from. Then he noticed one of the employees making fresh crepes in front of the customer on the same counter as the coffee machines. However, just in front of the pan, the counter has a glass divider. Perhaps the cafe's manager or owner decided to install a divider to protect customers from injury.Alfred then told him that this is his favorite place in New York. The reason is that the crepes they made give him a warm feeli
The next morning, Conrad decided to open up his dad's journal once more, while drinking his coffee. He hasn't gotten to read its contents after reading the first page. He didn't expect his dad to leave so suddenly. It was heartbreaking for him, knowing he bid his final farewell. He won't be able to see his dad again, and he won't be able to do the things he wanted to do with him. But he told himself if they were able to cross each other's paths sometime, he would just put a smile on his face and act as if they were once strangers. But even if he left so suddenly, he still wants to find answers in the journal he left, the answers to his sudden disappearance, the key tied to the journal, and the envelopes. Opening up the journal, he gathers the courage to prepare himself for any painful statements inside the journal. The second page read; Dear Conrad, If I were given a wish to be granted immediately, I wish that I could take
