Chapter 764

Author: Chweety
Mateo narrowed his eyes and glanced at his arm where Clarisse had just released her grip. Realizing she might have been too forceful, she let go and urged, "Hurry up with the door!"

Mateo nodded. "Step back," he commanded, and with a solid kick, Janet's door flew open.

"Janet!"

The sight of Janet shaking uncontrollably on the floor sent chills down Clarisse's spine. "Oh no..."

"Medicine! We need medicine. There's some in my room in the nightstand for Janet!"

"I'm on it!" Mateo knew they had to act fast. He found two unmarked bottles in Clarisse's nightstand. With a brief moment of hesitation, he handed them to Clarisse. "What are these? Is Janet really—"

"No time for questions!" Clarisse cut him off, quickly popping two pills into Janet's mouth. "Water, now!"

Mateo helped Janet drink the water, and after what felt like an eternity, Janet's tremors subsided, and they both let out a huge sigh of relief.

Clarisse suddenly realized she was drenched in sweat. She shot Mateo an embar

The new year was just a few days away, and Noelle's spirits had been lifting. Charles was still worried about her getting upset, though. He had been sticking closely by her side at the Phoenix Tree Residence. He had also ramped up the search for clues about her past, putting Peter on the case. However, just like before, they had hit a wall. It was as if someone had gone to great lengths to wipe Noelle's history clean.Charles had a hunch that there was more to Noelle's story than met the eye, but he knew it was not the right time to dig into Sebastian or Samuel's secrets. If they were keeping things under wraps, it must mean Noelle's past was a can of worms they did not want to open. Just like that, Charles lost the urge to keep snooping.Conversely, Noelle was gearing up to make a bold move. She had decided to meet with Samuel, leaving Charles out of the loop. They agreed to catch up at Homestyle Garden House, one of the few places still buzzing with life as New Year festivities dre

Samuel furrowed his brow, fidgeting with the cup before letting out a resigned sigh. "What do you mean? I’m confused.”"Grandpa, no more secrets. You want to know why I took off that day, right?" Noelle forced a smile, seeing the realization dawn on Samuel's face. "I was just walking by the study when mom and dad were talking, and I overheard them."A shadow passed over Samuel's eyes, and he shook his head gently. "Silly girl, why are you so convinced you're not a Shaw? If you weren't one of us, would I have been so kind to you?" He tried to continue, but Noelle cut him off. "Grandpa, I'm not a kid anymore. I'm a grown-up. Sure, I could've lived in blissful ignorance if I never found out, but now that I do, I can't just act like everything's fine." That was her line in the sand. "Ever since I was little, I wondered why other kids' parents showered them with love while mine loved Winter and hated me. I used to think I wasn't good enough or smart enough, so I worked hard to win their a

Charles lifted his coffee mug in a toast. "Noelle's a bit clueless. She even planned a meet-up with you today.""That's not true!" Noelle protested, though her voice was a whisper amidst Charles's commanding presence.Charles gave her a sidelong glance, a look of mild reproof, and leaned in to whisper, "We'll talk about this when we get home." He then turned to Samuel with an easy smile. "Noelle's always had a knack for making coffee. Grandpa, is it the way you like it?""It's not bad at all. I’ve spoiled her too much since she was little. If she steps out of line, just let me know!"Charles's lips quirked up in agreement. "Will do!"Noelle bristled a bit. "What could I possibly do wrong?"Charles narrowed his eyes playfully. "Fetch us a pot of herbal tea, will you?"Noelle paused, sensing that Charles was trying to get her out of the room. Despite her irritation, she knew better than to try to keep secrets from Charles—he was too clever to be fooled. With a slight nod, Noelle

Charles's eyes lit up, ready to say something, but just then, the door swung open. Noelle walked in, a cup of herbal tea in her hands. She had caught the tail end of Charles's unfinished sentence, and her expression clouded over. "Grandpa, Charles!"She took a seat next to Charles. "What's up? What are you guys chatting about?""What else? We're talking about you two lovebirds, of course!" Samuel said, trying to sound casual as he steered the conversation off-topic. Noelle kept probing, but Samuel dodged every question about the one thing she wanted to know. Her curiosity and desire to uncover her true origins burned stronger, but with Samuel tight-lipped, she was stuck.Thankfully, Charles was there to smooth over the awkwardness.Charles drove them back. Noelle sat in silence next to him, her head down and her mood obviously off. Charles did not start a conversation. Instead, he played a song to soften the tension between them. Finally, Noelle could not hold back any longer. "Is

"That's something to be happy about, isn't it? It shows how much your grandfathers really care about you!" Charles could tell Noelle was getting hung up on the negative, so he gave her hand a reassuring pat. "Noelle, trust me on this. Let's just act like this whole thing never happened, okay?""Why should I?" Noelle looked up, her eyes searching Charles's face for answers. "I'm not really a Shaw, am I? They took me in for whatever reason, but who are my real parents? Why did they leave me? I don't know anything about it. If I hadn't found out, maybe I could've lived my whole life without knowing, and maybe that would've been okay. But how can you expect me to just pretend I don’t know now that I do? I can't do that!"Noelle's stubborn streak was showing. Once she got an idea in her head, it was nearly impossible to stop her. She was the type to keep going until she hit a dead end. "Charles, I can't live my life not knowing the truth. You understand that, right?"Charles's expression

"Everything's been ready for a while. I wanted to bring it over a few days back, but I ran into a few problems. I just got them sorted. When are you heading over?" The woman's voice was polite, and Noelle caught every word."We'll be there shortly," Charles replied, then hung up. He glanced at Noelle's curious gaze and smiled slyly. You'll see soon enough."They arrived at their destination, and Noelle stared at Charles, bewildered. "Why are we at a mall?" They were not at just any mall, but one that oozed luxury.Charles just chuckled and stepped out of the car, prompting Noelle to sigh and follow. "Hang tight. You'll see soon enough. No need to rush!"Hand in hand, they made their way through the mall, making a beeline for the glittering jewelry section. Noelle's eyes lit up with realization. "Is this a New Year's surprise for me?"He responded with only a grin, keeping the secret until they paused at the jewelry store's entrance. That's when Noelle guessed aloud, "You're gettin

“Why would it not count? You’re considered a bride every minute you’re with me!” Charles said as he gently tapped Noelle’s nose and handed the box to her. “Can you put this on for me?” “You have one, too?” Noelle asked, surprised. She gave her ring a satisfied glance before looking at the complete set of jewelry within the box and crying out in surprise. "When did you start preparing these?” How did she not have a single clue?“That’s a secret!” Charles said as he retrieved the male pair of her ring and handed it to Noelle. “Help me put it on!” Noelle took the ring and compared it to the one on her finger. Both rings were minimalistic and had a simple design. Their shapes made them special, as they were not traditional circles. Noelle continued holding the ring and staring at it rather than slipping it onto Charles’ finger. She held it up against the light for the longest time before crying out. "You got it engraved?” Noelle just realized her and Charles’ initials were engrave

It was not just the craftsmanship but the extremely valuable material the brooch was made out of. Based on what Janice had said earlier, Noelle had thought it would be a cheap but heartfelt gift. “I can’t accept this!” Janice raised her eyebrows and smiled as she turned to look at Charles, who took the brooch from Noelle. “Thank you!” Then, he added, “I’ll have Ronald bring a check over later!” “That sounds good!” Janice did not beat around the bush and was appreciative of Charles’ straightforward way of doing things. “When will your wedding be held, Mr. Hoffman?” Charles raised an eyebrow slightly as he turned to look at Noelle, a smile tugging on his lips. "We won’t be having a ceremony anytime soon, but I’ll let you know when we decide to!” “I’ll wait for your good news then, Mr. Hoffman.” Charles and Noelle left the jewelry shop, and Noelle grinned as she held Charles’ hand and walked ahead of him. All her melancholy had vanished into thin air, which also brought Charles

"Is that why you pulled away from me?"Liliana looked down, silent.Feeling a mix of frustration and amusement, Sean asked, "Do you think I would think less of you because of that?"Liliana did not answer, and Sean chuckled lightly. "If I really thought less of you, do you think I'd have saved you? Would I have helped you?"Liliana suddenly lifted her head. "But I...""Nobody gets to choose where they come from, Liliana. It's not your fault," Sean said, looking into her eyes, which seemed to be on the verge of tears. Despite her delicate appearance, she had strength within her. She held back her tears, and her gaze stirred a sense of compassion in Sean.Liliana's heart skipped a beat. All her life, she had lived in the shadows. She thought everyone looked at

"Have you eaten yet?”Sean checked the time and realized it was getting late. It was way past dinner time.Liliana was still silent, her head bowed."I'm hungry!" Sean announced.Liliana glanced up, then quickly looked away. "Then you should go home and eat!""Don't you want to eat too?" Sean asked, reaching out and gently taking Liliana's hand.Liliana jerked her hand away as if she had been burned, leaving Sean's hand hanging in the air. He stared at her, surprised and a little hurt.Liliana felt bad about her reaction. "I'm sorry, Sean!"Sean scrunched his eyebrows. "Sorry for what? I told you, you've done nothing wrong. Why do you look so sad?"Sean did not usually have that much patience for people he barely knew, but he told himself that this was his good deed for the day. Besides, Liliana looked as sad as a puppy left out in the rain, and he could not help wanting to cheer her up. "Come on. Look at me," he said gently. "What's got you so scared?"Liliana did not know w

Sean was really pleased with the principal's promise. "You've got to keep your word, Principal. I may not be here, but the school is still in Brookville, and so is my family, the Smiths!" Don't worry about your studies, Liliana. If you run into any issues, just come to me or the head of teaching. Your grades will be just fine!" Satisfied, Sean walked away. Liliana tagged along behind Sean. With his long arms and legs, Sean towered over her. Sean was not entirely sure why he was doing all this. It was just that when he looked at Liliana's swollen, bruised face, he found it hard to bear. Eventually, he came up with a perfect justification for himself. He figured that staring at her swollen, ugly face had made him feel a little sorry for her. Besides, it had been a while since he had done a good deed.Had his aunt not always called him a troublemaker? His aunt was always going on about karma, and after years of being influenced by her, Sean—despite his arrogance—had developed a habit of doing good deeds. She often said that all people had past and future lives, and if he accumulated enough good karma in this life, maybe he would be reborn into a fortunate family next time—perhaps even one as privileged as the one he was in now.Yes, that was it!With that logic in mind, Sean gave Jasper and McKenzie a ruthless lesson. In the end, to appease Sean, the school administration issued them both a major disciplinary record.E

Liliana remained silent, simply staring at Sean.Sean frowned, growing impatient. "If you want to forgive her, then forgive her. If you don't, that's fine too. Has she ever hit you?"His voice was cold, making the girl tremble. "Mr. Smith, I've never hit her! I swear!"She looked at Liliana, her face full of desperation.Liliana swallowed nervously. "S-Sean, she has never hit me." Even though the girl had joined in with the others to bully her, she had never actually laid a hand on her.Sean's expression remained dark, but he gave a small nod. "Alright. If you don't want to forgive her, then—""Sean!" Liliana quickly interrupted. "She really never hit me."Sean nodded again, indicating he understood. He turned to the girl, his sharp gaze settling on her trembling form. She looked truly terrified. "At least you had the sense to apologize first. I won't make a move this time. Now, get lost.""Yes, yes! Thank you, Mr. Smith! Thank you!" The girl looked at Sean gratefully, but he

Sean had never hit a woman before, but at this moment, as he looked at McKenzie, he did not mind making an exception.McKenzie was already shocked that Sean was actually taking action for Liliana, an illegitimate daughter. "Sean, just because your family is rich, you think you can do whatever you want—"Sean let out a chuckle, his tone laced with amusement. "That's exactly what I think. What? You don't like it?"McKenzie was momentarily stunned."It's the survival of the fittest," Sean continued nonchalantly. "If you think it's fine to bully someone weaker like Liliana, then why shouldn't I do the same to you?"His words were so brazen, so outright arrogant, making it crystal clear that he was here to seek justice for Liliana. His overbearing attitude was enough to make people dislike him, but so what?Sean had a point. This world operated on the law of the jungle.Everyone bullied Liliana simply because she was an illegitimate daughter. Even though she carried the Hoffman name

Sean's narrow eyes held a faint smile. "And how exactly do you know that?""I... I...""Did she seduce you? Hmm?" Sean's gaze darkened. There was utter silence."So, it seems like while I wasn't at school, you all just assumed I was dead, huh?" Sean's voice carried a lazy drawl, yet there was an unmistakable sharpness to it. "I hear the school has a new leader?""No, no! That's not true! You're still the boss. You'll always be the boss!"Sean let out a low chuckle and turned to Liliana. "See that? These are the same people who bullied you so fearlessly. It turns out they can be put in their place too. "What's with all this 'Mr. Smith' nonsense? You're not my staff.""Then...""Just call me by my name. It doesn't matter even if I'm older than you. Think of me as an older brother." Sean did not seem to care much, but his words stirred something deep inside Liliana."I..."Did she say to think of him like an older brother? She did have an older brother—Charles. He was the golden child of the Hoffman family and the future master of the household. He was raised to be exceptional in every way.Even so, she had never dared to look him in the eye, let alone address him as her brother. In her memory, Charles was a cold and distant figure, unappro
