Chapter 714

Penulis: Chweety
Charles's comment about finishing the meal had a hidden layer of meaning. No sooner had Noelle stepped outside with the basket than the doorbell rang, catching her off-guard. "Weird. Who would come by this late?" she wondered.

The list of people who knew where she lived was not long: Charles, Ronald, the Shaw family, and Xavier. However, it did not make sense for any of them to drop by at this hour.

Curious, Noelle set the basket down and peered through the peephole. The figure outside made her do a double-take before she swung the door open. There stood Sean, looking sharp in a casual-chic way, glasses perched on his nose, a fruit basket in hand, and leaning casually against the doorframe. His smile was disarmingly sweet. "Hey, Noelle, it's been a while!"

Sean caught Noelle's eye and waved. She could not help but grimace before masking it with a polite, if not entirely genuine, smile. Swinging the door open, she greeted him. "It's been ages, Mr. Smith!"

After letting Sean in, Noel

"Uh..." Sean's eyes bulged as he stared at Noelle's retreating figure. "Wait! Noelle, I didn't mean me!" Great, he had really messed up.Noelle glanced back with a teasing smile. "Aren't you a big, strong man, Sean?""Sure am!" Sean nodded emphatically, then it hit him. "Hold on. How did such a sweet and innocent girl like you start copying Charles's bad habits?"Noelle's lips quirked up. "Great minds think alike. You came over so late, so I guess you're here to freeload, huh? In my house, you play by my rules, Mr. Smith. Don't you agree?"Sean's mouth twitched. He mentally kicked himself. Why did he have to be so mouthy?Noelle might look sweet and gullible, but she was actually tougher to handle than any of those hot-headed heiresses.Rubbing his temples, Sean saw Charles emerge from the kitchen and blurted out, "Charles, your wife is crazy!""What about my wife?" Charles arched an eyebrow. "If you don't like it here, there's the door!"Sean was speechless. He had gotten him

"Noelle, that's a bit harsh, isn't it?" Sean said, his voice edged with frustration. "If I was just hungry, I could've grabbed a bite downtown. Why would I bother coming all the way from my place to yours?" He sighed dramatically. "Do you really think I'd want to come and play house if Charles hadn't twisted my arm?"Noelle was speechless."Don't mind his blabbering!" Charles shook his head. "Noelle, why don't you tidy up the dishes? Sean and I need to talk.""Sure thing!" Noelle agreed, nodding. "You guys head to the living room. It's cramped here, and we don't have a study," she said a bit sheepishly.Sean quirked an eyebrow. "Hey, no offense taken. I was just messing around. Let's head out, Charles!" After a satisfying meal, Sean felt rejuvenated and trailed behind Charles into the living room."You didn't just call me over for dinner, right?" Sean said, twirling a cigarette between his fingers without lighting it. "I noticed some shady figures lurking downstairs when I arrived

Charles gave a slight smirk and raised an eyebrow. "Take a guess.""I couldn't care less if you tell me or not!" Sean checked the time on his watch. "Hey, you're not expecting me to bunk here all night, are you?" Sean's brow creased. "You know I've got a ton on my plate, and besides, you and Noelle need your alone time...""What's the hurry?" Charles stood, pulled a set of keys from his coat, and tossed them to Sean.Sean smoothly caught the key tossed his way. "What's this for?""From today on, you're my neighbor!" Charles announced, swinging the door wide open. "It's late, come on in!""Wait a second..." Sean's mouth quirked in disbelief, his finger pointing at the door across the hall. "Charles, you've got to be kidding! This isn't for real, is it?""Do I seem like I'm kidding?"Charles nudged him through the doorway with a grin as innocent as Sean's. "It's all set up. Just move yourself in!""Charles, man, you can't just spring this on me! You taking off without a word is j

Janet said that as she glanced at the man across her. The middle-aged guy was rocking a black coat and did not have a hair out of place. His hair was starting to show some silver, but he was as lively as ever. That was Janet's adoptive dad, Charles's Uncle, Milo.He was there to catch up with Janet and check out what was happening with Charles.Milo eyed the photo, lost in thought for a moment. "Bob Smith. You're positive this is the guy?"Janet nodded. "Absolutely. Jade was the one who played matchmaker for them, and I've got the snapshot from their blind date!" Janet whipped out the photo from when Sean and Noelle were set up and handed it to Milo. "These two have been in touch the whole time, but it looks like Noelle's mom, Jade, is clueless. Noelle's got to be sharp, probably looking to ditch the Shaw family with Bob's help, but without giving them any perks in return!"Milo narrowed his eyes. "Call off the tail on Noelle, will you?""Why?" Janet was puzzled. "Dad, last time I

"I'll do as you say and steer clear of Noelle for now, but Winter is just too much, Dad. Charles has been giving her all the best opportunities. He's not even trying to hide his relationship with Winter, acting like he doesn't care about anything else. And she's married! He'd rather be with a married woman than marry me. I just can't stand it, Dad!""You shouldn't stand for it. I've seen a picture of her, and you're way prettier and smarter too. What you need to do now is win Charles back!""I will!" Janet's fists were tight, her eyes blazing with fury and a touch of something darker. "You have to help me, Dad!""I'm here to check things out and, while I'm at it, to have a little chat with your Charles," Milo said with a wave of his hand. "Come here!"Janet sauntered over and gently took Milo's hand. "Dad, are you feeling hungry? It's getting pretty late. Let's go grab some dinner, okay?""Absolutely! My sweet girl!" Milo gazed at Janet with a softness in his eyes, tenderly stroke

"Charles, don't you think you're a bit on edge?" It was not just Sean. Even Noelle thought Charles might be taking things too far. Before long, Charles's phone buzzed to life. He glanced at the caller ID, a smirk playing on his lips, and shook the phone in front of Sean and Noelle. "Talk about perfect timing."Charles swiped to answer the call. "Hello!""Charles, it's me, your uncle!""I know," Charles said with a half-smile. "What's up, Uncle? What's got you calling me out of the blue today?"“Have you got some time tomorrow? Let's catch up! It's been ages since we last hung out, right?" Milo's voice was firm and commanding, even over the phone.Charles's eyes narrowed slightly as he subtly gestured for Sean and Noelle to keep it down. He shifted to a more comfortable spot, lounging back with his phone in one hand while casually holding Noelle's hand in the other, his fingers playing with hers absentmindedly."You're in Brookville, Uncle?" Charles asked, his voice giving nothin

Charles smiled as he pulled Noelle into his arms, using his right arm to cradle Noelle’s arm as he drew comforting strokes along it. “Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing. I wouldn’t be doing this if I wasn’t confident in what I had planned!” “Alright!” Noelle nodded. “Are you really going to meet your uncle tomorrow? What did you say he’s here for this time?” “To find out the truth!” Charles sneered. “My uncle is very meticulous, and he never misses a detail in his plans. He’d never trust anyone but himself to execute what is planned, and he’ll only rest easy when he’s the one working on things.” “So, you’ll be meeting him tomorrow just to put his mind at ease?” Noelle asked as she raised an eyebrow. When she saw the surprised look in Charles’ eyes, she could not help but laugh. "Did I get that right?” “You’re brilliant, Nelly. You’re an amazing student,” Charles said as he gently tapped Noelle’s nose and said lovingly, “He won’t be doing anything this time. It doesn’t matter ho

“Alright, alright!” Milo said as he nodded. “You’re a wonderful child!” Charles’ eyes narrowed slightly, a glint appearing in his eyes upon hearing Milo call him a wonderful child. “Uncle Milo, I’m sure you haven’t invited me here just to catch up on old times, have you?” Then, he added, “When did you arrive in Brookville, Uncle?” “You’re so well-connected, I’m sure that news of even the slightest stir in Brookville would have made its way to your ears a long time ago, right?” “That’s an exaggeration, Uncle Milo. Brookville is such a big city. I wouldn’t know everything that goes on first-hand. I would know even less about the inconsequential happenings within the city,” Charles said in response to Milo, hurriedly changing the subject before Milo could respond. “Oh, right. You haven’t gotten the chance to meet my mother and Janet during this trip yet, right?” Milo paused. He had already been feeling agitated before this, and on top of that, Charles had jeered at him. Yet, the t

Liliana gazed into Sean's eyes, not looking away for even a second.Sean felt a jolt in his chest as if something had struck him, and a flurry of thoughts burst through his mind.He grimaced as if snapping out of a trance. "Is that why you pulled away from me?"Liliana looked down, silent.Feeling a mix of frustration and amusement, Sean asked, "Do you think I would think less of you because of that?"Liliana did not answer, and Sean chuckled lightly. "If I really thought less of you, do you think I'd have saved you? Would I have helped you?"Liliana suddenly lifted her head. "But I...""Nobody gets to choose where they come from, Liliana. It's not your fault," Sean said, looking into her eyes, which seemed to be on the verge of tears. Despite her delicate appearance, she had strength within her. She held back her tears, and her gaze stirred a sense of compassion in Sean.Liliana's heart skipped a beat. All her life, she had lived in the shadows. She thought everyone looked at

"Have you eaten yet?”Sean checked the time and realized it was getting late. It was way past dinner time.Liliana was still silent, her head bowed."I'm hungry!" Sean announced.Liliana glanced up, then quickly looked away. "Then you should go home and eat!""Don't you want to eat too?" Sean asked, reaching out and gently taking Liliana's hand.Liliana jerked her hand away as if she had been burned, leaving Sean's hand hanging in the air. He stared at her, surprised and a little hurt.Liliana felt bad about her reaction. "I'm sorry, Sean!"Sean scrunched his eyebrows. "Sorry for what? I told you, you've done nothing wrong. Why do you look so sad?"Sean did not usually have that much patience for people he barely knew, but he told himself that this was his good deed for the day. Besides, Liliana looked as sad as a puppy left out in the rain, and he could not help wanting to cheer her up. "Come on. Look at me," he said gently. "What's got you so scared?"Liliana did not know w

Sean was really pleased with the principal's promise. "You've got to keep your word, Principal. I may not be here, but the school is still in Brookville, and so is my family, the Smiths!" "Absolutely!" With his mission accomplished, Sean left with Liliana."Oh, and since Liliana is hurt right now..." "Of course, the school will give her some time off. Don't worry about your studies, Liliana. If you run into any issues, just come to me or the head of teaching. Your grades will be just fine!" Satisfied, Sean walked away. Liliana tagged along behind Sean. With his long arms and legs, Sean towered over her. Even though he was only eighteen, he was already much taller than Liliana by more than a head.Liliana stood by Sean, looking as tiny and frail as a malnourished child. Sean moved quickly, and Liliana had to trot to keep up with his long strides. The lawyer trailed behind them, a small smirk playing on his lips as he watched the scene unfold with amusement. After Sean dismisse

Sean always had a smile on his face, which made him look friendly. However, the principal felt Sean’s invisible pressure, and it made it hard to catch his breath."I'm not the one who got hurt, right, Principal?"It was clear that Sean meant that Liliana was the one who should decide what to do next. The principal's face froze for a second when he heard that, but he had seen a lot in his time and quickly returned to normal. "Liliana, what do you think we should do?"Liliana had never been part of something like this before. She grew up in the countryside and had never even met a principal before. Today, she had not only met the school’s top management, but even got an apology from them. She quickly turned to the principal. "Principal, it's all good. I'm fine now!"Liliana was still a bit shy, but the principal was relieved to hear her say that. "Liliana, you're really understanding!"Sean let out a huff, but he was already on the phone. Soon, there was a knock on the office do

Sean was not entirely sure why he was doing all this. It was just that when he looked at Liliana's swollen, bruised face, he found it hard to bear. Eventually, he came up with a perfect justification for himself. He figured that staring at her swollen, ugly face had made him feel a little sorry for her. Besides, it had been a while since he had done a good deed.Had his aunt not always called him a troublemaker? His aunt was always going on about karma, and after years of being influenced by her, Sean—despite his arrogance—had developed a habit of doing good deeds. She often said that all people had past and future lives, and if he accumulated enough good karma in this life, maybe he would be reborn into a fortunate family next time—perhaps even one as privileged as the one he was in now.Yes, that was it!With that logic in mind, Sean gave Jasper and McKenzie a ruthless lesson. In the end, to appease Sean, the school administration issued them both a major disciplinary record.E

Liliana remained silent, simply staring at Sean.Sean frowned, growing impatient. "If you want to forgive her, then forgive her. If you don't, that's fine too. Has she ever hit you?"His voice was cold, making the girl tremble. "Mr. Smith, I've never hit her! I swear!"She looked at Liliana, her face full of desperation.Liliana swallowed nervously. "S-Sean, she has never hit me." Even though the girl had joined in with the others to bully her, she had never actually laid a hand on her.Sean's expression remained dark, but he gave a small nod. "Alright. If you don't want to forgive her, then—""Sean!" Liliana quickly interrupted. "She really never hit me."Sean nodded again, indicating he understood. He turned to the girl, his sharp gaze settling on her trembling form. She looked truly terrified. "At least you had the sense to apologize first. I won't make a move this time. Now, get lost.""Yes, yes! Thank you, Mr. Smith! Thank you!" The girl looked at Sean gratefully, but he

Sean had never hit a woman before, but at this moment, as he looked at McKenzie, he did not mind making an exception.McKenzie was already shocked that Sean was actually taking action for Liliana, an illegitimate daughter. "Sean, just because your family is rich, you think you can do whatever you want—"Sean let out a chuckle, his tone laced with amusement. "That's exactly what I think. What? You don't like it?"McKenzie was momentarily stunned."It's the survival of the fittest," Sean continued nonchalantly. "If you think it's fine to bully someone weaker like Liliana, then why shouldn't I do the same to you?"His words were so brazen, so outright arrogant, making it crystal clear that he was here to seek justice for Liliana. His overbearing attitude was enough to make people dislike him, but so what?Sean had a point. This world operated on the law of the jungle.Everyone bullied Liliana simply because she was an illegitimate daughter. Even though she carried the Hoffman name

The crowd stiffened, completely unprepared for Sean to actually stand up for the so-called illegitimate daughter."Mr. Smith, that girl is a vixen. She—""Oh? A vixen?" Sean's narrow eyes held a faint smile. "And how exactly do you know that?""I... I...""Did she seduce you? Hmm?" Sean's gaze darkened. There was utter silence."So, it seems like while I wasn't at school, you all just assumed I was dead, huh?" Sean's voice carried a lazy drawl, yet there was an unmistakable sharpness to it. "I hear the school has a new leader?""No, no! That's not true! You're still the boss. You'll always be the boss!"Sean let out a low chuckle and turned to Liliana. "See that? These are the same people who bullied you so fearlessly. It turns out they can be put in their place too. Understand?"Liliana did not fully grasp why Sean was doing this, but she knew that after today, these people would hesitate before hurting her again. Her feelings were complicated. She knew she should be gratefu

Sean twitched the corner of his mouth. "Do I not have a name?"Liliana hesitated, her lips trembling slightly. "M-Mr. Smith."Sean frowned.Liliana immediately sensed his displeasure but had no idea why he was upset, so she dared not speak.Seeing her looking like a frightened little wife as if he had bullied her, Sean sighed impatiently. "What's with all this 'Mr. Smith' nonsense? You're not my staff.""Then...""Just call me by my name. It doesn't matter even if I'm older than you. Think of me as an older brother." Sean did not seem to care much, but his words stirred something deep inside Liliana."I..."Did she say to think of him like an older brother? She did have an older brother—Charles. He was the golden child of the Hoffman family and the future master of the household. He was raised to be exceptional in every way.Even so, she had never dared to look him in the eye, let alone address him as her brother. In her memory, Charles was a cold and distant figure, unappro
